    Isabel Rowan Thanks for the feedback. The wood is just the end of a pine 2x4 that was used to build the tables in my studio. The press I am using is one from PotterUSA.com. In this video I used the electric press, but a manual press will do the same job.

    this is fantastic Melissa! Thank you for posting the entire procedure! I have a question about sweat soldering (from watching this and your other video about solder flow) - I am a newbie when it comes to soldering - how can you tell when a piece that you are sweat soldering is actually soldered - especially since you cannot see between the pieces of metal?

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a very good question mrs beadsley. When I do the sweat soldering as in the other video I posted, I can see when the top piece "falls" and I will give a touch of my pick to ensure that the two pieces connect. In the case of this flower, I could actually see the solder flow. Sometimes I don't know if the solder has actually flowed until after I pickle the piece and try to pry it apart. ;)

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a very well used pickle. It starts out clear and as I do more and more pickling it becomes loaded with copper which turns it green. Even though it is super green, as long as it removes my firescale, it is still good.

    Hi Melissa. Made a bracelet I learned from you elsewhere. Big fan! Question. Since soap, (not fancy cleansers) are alkaline, isn't it ok to stop the pickle, and /or liver of sulphur process with just soap, instead of baking soda??

      I am up North in Bothwell that's why I asked I am just now trying to teach
      myself soldering using copper first before I go on to SS. There's very
      little information on using copper solder all I find is sliver solder to
      use on copper or how to solder copper for plumbing.
      Thanks for responding.

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't use copper solder. It is brittle and doesn't have a fantastic color match. I use silver solder. I have an online soldering workshop if you are interested. It is about 6 hours long (30 videos) and covers how to solder on copper and on sterling silver. Or if you ever want to come down for some studio time, let me know. I would love to have you.

      Debbie Minter You most certainly could. I do a lot of forming with the swage block. I like the end piece of the 2x4 because it is soft and I can shape it how I need to. But the swage block would totally work.

    If you use silver solder, how do you avoid the drastic color difference?

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to make the join as clean as can be to begin with so that any color difference would be minimal. In this case, you wouldn't see the silver solder, and where it is exposed is around the silver tubing for the tube set stone. Having said that, when I need to cover a solder seam on copper, I will often copper plate a piece to cover the seams. I do this with "spent" pickle and some steel wire.

      It is one of the best tools ever. I use it all the time. I bought mine through MicroMark. But they have them at any of the big box hardware stores. I would avoid the one from Harbor Freight, though I have many friends that have purchased one there and it has done well for them.

    Love the pendant. Wondering if my Sizzix die cutting system will cut through 20 gauge copper sheeting, the steel ruled dies. Happen to know?
    In 1 of the comments you said you don't use copper solder. I'm wondering if you have tried the Rio Grande "improved color match" copper solder? I have it in my shopper cart and would appreciate hearing back from you ASAP so I can final my order.

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe that a Sizzix machine will cut through 20 gauge. That is pretty thick. I have not used the color match copper solder. I will have to check it out.

    • @MichellesHandmadeCreations
      @MichellesHandmadeCreations 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melssa, thanks for your reply. I stumbled across another vid that said in comments that my Sizzix might work on 24 and will work on 26. Happily I learned from a FireMtGems vid that I can use my mill to thin my 20 gauge down for die cutting. Yay! And duh! My mill is new, so I'm not used to thinking of ways to use it.
      I ordered the Rio copper solder. Will let you know what I think. I've heard over heating will turn it silver, but the same hold true for copper sheeting, at least the cheap stuff I tried before.

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is great to know about cutting the thinner metals. It makes sense. I can typically cut thinner metals with scissors. Let me know what you think about the solder.

    • @MichellesHandmadeCreations
      @MichellesHandmadeCreations 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Cuz of arthritis, I'm a terrible "cutter-outer" with paper, so figured cutting sheet metal might be more challenging for me, esp. when cutting more intricate patterns like a daisy, etc. so being able to die cut is exciting. I should be able to manage hand cutting simple random shapes though. :)
      Will be happy to share with you how I like or dislike the copper solder. Appreciate all you do, so the slightest reciprocation is my pleasure.

      I don't recall the exact amount of time, and of course it took longer for the video than it would have normally taken. I am sure I could probably do this project within an hour or so. And I believe I used at least 20 gauge for the flowers.

      Melissa Muir Ah... I wondered about that strongly but briefly the other day, after
      not thinking about it at all for months. Then today someone sent me this link . Glad to hear you're still planning le book . I like how fast the Potter press works. If I wasn't all set up already, I'd look into his pump setups .

    Why was that hole drilled in the middle?

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taylor White There are a number of reasons for the hole. But I do it primarily for three.... 1- It allows for light to come through. 2 - I can push it out if it happens to get stuck before I am ready to set it, or if I need to unset the stone for any reason (ie. repairs) 3- cleaning is easier if you have a hole behind the stone.

    Excuse me, Melissa, I use Google to translate the comments and it is not clear to me what product you use in the brown sink, that you use a little bit in another bottle of water, I think... is it citric acid with copper? There are two things that I use in this video. First is pickle. It is made with sodium bisulfate. You could use Citric Acid for that. The second is Liver of Sulfur, that is the brown bottle that i drop into the bowl. The Liver of sulfur is what I use to darken the copper.
