  • In this episode my Yamaha XJR400 gets delivered back to me after a 2 month long engine rebuild. It was a long process which had it's ups and downs but it's time to finally go for a test ride with the project nearing completion. Unfortunately, the test ride does not go as planned and disappointment prevails. Enjoy the Ride!

It is just great that you have such philosophical attitude to setbacks and disappointment. It’s the only way to truly enjoy life. Something for all of us to learn and practice daily. I also loved that soulful piano music you added to the scene of your paddling the dead bike around. Very cool! I am sure it’s all going to work out in the end. The bike looks great, just needs a little more TLC from the mechs. Thanks for the very enjoyable vid. Ciao.

I spent more on a used bike for repairs than for a new bike. So learned the hard way.

Love your channel. A couple comments, I believe that you can get top notch work done in Thailand especially on smaller high performance bikes. With 4 carbs it would run like crap but it would still keep running unless all four carbs were blocked which I think unlikely. My bet is on the wiring (spark). You said it was little bit of a bodge job on the harness already, add that they pulled "some" of it apart during the rebuild/aftermarket gauge cluster removal and add that your gauges were not working when you took delivery of it. Probably needs a new harness or a full re-wire. Easier than an overhaul, just a whole bunch of time with a meter.

I love the melancholy music when the engine fails.....At least you know your starter motor works: LOL. A used bike like this that has been cannibalised will have ongoing issues, that's part of the fun, and you're just adding to it by the modifications you are now making.

You're a brave soul trusting the same shop. Have had the same problems fixing our house, everyone says they can but reality says otherwise. Pool, yard, electric, plumbing nothing gets fixed on the first try, somethings never get fixed properly. Thailand can be quite frustrating and extremely wonderful at the same time!

  • @johnjustin8944
    @johnjustin8944 4 ปีที่แล้ว

They will eventually get it fixed. When there are a lot of new parts, sometimes new parts fail and so there were possibly many variables at work here. I have had lots of work done on my vehicles before and decided maybe the better thing to do is to get things done a little at a time so the mechanics don't get overwhelmed and it is easier for them to locate a problem after each job if there is a problem. But love your videos. Like your positive attitude as well!

  • @melnoble5218

Hi I enjoy your channel. As one of you followers mentioned the likely problem is small particles of blast material or rust from the tank. My fellow dirt bike rider had
a similar problem several years ago and solved the problem with one of the liquid gas tank liners/sealers. There are several available from my quick online search.
The shop should be able to find one available in Thailand. It is nearly impossible to clean a gas tank after it has rusted without adding the gas tank liner. Best of luck.

do not be disappointed, I been wrenching on cars, trucks & motorcycles 40 years, the first 500-1000 miles are always the worst, I call it a shakedown, to wok bugs & kinks out, & your right it sounds like either ignition or carb, or a dead cylinder, but I have had more issues with carbs than ignition, but a bad coil for 2 cylinder would have that loss of power with that sound, but I also bought a Kawasaki ZX11 once with that sound, & rebuilt carbs for it to run fine.
for a weird note, different bike, rebuilt carbs, rode a couple hundred miles on an old Kawasaki KZ1000 all seemed fine, took a small trip & did that, weirdest thing, when I put gas line on, apparently the carb fitting shaved a fingernail piece of rubber from inside new gas hose, & it took a few hundred miles for the piece of rubber to get under needle on 1 of my carbs, so that cylinder was flooding bad, if I let off it would die, almost didnt crank, had to keep it revved up & rode home at a wee bit high speed, I was broke back then, no money to tow it to get it home, so I had to ride it. but thats what I discovered. curious to see what happened, but always remember major work, always needs a shakedown, even something as a wire ran wrong & touching something to melt, who knows, but see too many in my life, always expect a few minor bugs...... once fixed, ride the hell out of it..... & ENJOY!

Fuel system is a good candidate for the trouble, but if the valves aren't gapped right it can also cause it run bad as it warms up. It may be more than one issue. Anyway best of luck and I hope they put in the right oversize rings. I had a problem like that once with a rebuilt chainsaw. It would run great until it warmed up, then it wouldn't rev out properly and stall shortly afterwards. It would restart only when it was stone cold.

As you say they've picked up, no quibbles. Surprised to see them ride it back though. The task now is to keep a lid on the extra cost they'll want to charge and the additional time to fix. They won't want to lose face so work on that. Good luck.

I'm betting it's a fuel delivery issue. Ask them about the carb float levels and if they've been spec'd. If there's a place nearby I'd have it dyno tuned to make sure that the carbs are jetted properly. Anyway, good on you for keeping an older bike like this running. My main ride is an '05 Kawi ZRX1200, before that an '82 Suzuki GS1100e so I know what you're going through. Hang in there. You've got enough new parts in it that once you get it sorted out it will be a good, reliable ride.

Hi. I noticed the guy who came to collect it managed to get it started to ride it out . A short harnes should not take a bike electrician more than a couple of hours to make and install.
The problem with the bike running badly shouldn't be connected to the fuel tank problem, as they should have cleaned out all the fuel lines and carburettors after the rust was discovered. But I does sound like that is the problem.
    Good luck.

Did the rebuilt engine seize up? If not I would guess a fuel delivery problem...filter to hoses and lines or electronics/computer. Did the computer need to be reprogrammed?

i had an issue in bali where i drained my battery and i didn't think to use the kick start. I walked to the nearest bike shop and they said to replace the battery. they didn't speak any english but i was trying to tell them to charge the dead battery first, which they deliberately refused. Eventually i noticed to try the kick start and did it right in front of them, started right up and took off.

    About time

  • @lancelink88

These problems come with the territory, so you should wake up to the mindset that when you buy an old bike and modify it, there are going to be problems that arise for a period of time, you fix one thing and another issue will arise..As they say "enjoy the ride..." If you've had a rebore & bigger pistons, did you get a re-jetting? Rust inside the tank if treated needs to be 100% thoroughly, and your fuel lines and filter needs total replacement, carbs fully overhauled. It may be that your carbs or one of them have a problem. Now moving onto the instrument panel, that's a whole new ball game of issues, and be prepared to have some setbacks. Thai people have no concept of time, so you just have to be patient, but Thais are great people by and large so I think they will do the best for you, you just need the patience of a saint.

Air cooled Japanese bike are premium nowadays. They don't make it anymore due to Cali and Euro gas regulations.
You should keep your XJR as much you could. It's already premium price in Japan.
4 carburetors to repair is hard way for normal mechanic these days though.

What happen to your new gauges? Looks like they didn’t install the new gauges.

Wiring had to be made up, so they aren't installed at that time..

What sad music when the bike pooped out on you. Hopefully the guys can figure out what it needs and get it taken care of. I had a Yamaha XS400 back in the day and loved it but had to sell it when I needed some cash.
