    I have been collecting potion bottles and creating potion art for 20 years. I have over 1000 bottles. I coat my cheap corks on the inward side with Flex Seal (liquid rubber) before sealing the bottle. It helps fill in irregularities in the cork surface. I could use wine bottle quality corks, but they are too expensive to bother with, and the sizes of my bottles are not all the same as wine bottles. Carving cork is time-consuming and messy. (I have more money invested in corks than I do in thrift and craft store bottles.) Straight-neck bottles seal better for liquids. Bottles with an inside lip, (like vases,) are nearly impossible to fully seal, so I use them for dry ingredients, herbs, and powders. I don't use rubber corks because I'm going for the ancient-looking pre-technology wizard vibe.

    imagine a website where you could choose the type of bottle, liquid, swirl or not, color, label, seal etc all that in a graphic animation like a video game where its us, little apprentice making the potion in a apothecary laboratory. and at the end when you have completed the potion you can buy it and its ship to you in a cool cardboard package printed with theme for the product (like a old crate or something like that). It requires probably a lot of work and developing the thing would cost a lot but i'm sure the idea could make a lot of money.

    I haven't been through comments yet, but I'd like to share a tip I use. When changing colors in your glue gun, you can use up that waste glue by making seals. Just put a daub of glue on a silicone mat or parchment paper and immediately press with a metal seal. Let it cool enough to touch and pop it off. Now you have a faux seal that can be painted and glued on ribbon or paper with a tiny touch of hot glue later. No wasted glue! I also collect my glue scraps and waste drops to remelt later for sculpting with a junk mini iron used only for that purpose.

    ⚠TLDR⚠
    Your potion bottle ideas spark inspiration! Your video confirmed what I had in mind is on the right track.
    The supplies I purchased before this video are Dollar Store glitter packs, Styling Gel, and Jut rope/cord. I got my small corked bottles from Michaels at $2.99 each. I had not purchased the coloring yet! I was not sure what would work with the alcohol in hair gel. I had a feeling that the alcohol would strip the color off glitter.
    So, I thought I would need to use some sort of alcohol base colors. I'm so happy that I can use food coloring and/or acrylic paint and the potion will not be ruined!
    Ooh-wee! I am soo excited. I want to suspend items in my potions like snips and snails and puppy dog tails! I feel like the more viscus the potion, the less likely the mica powder, glitter, or items will settle. I might move away from using clear hair gel (cause it's so cheap) and use the clear name brand school glue to avoid air bubbles.
    What I want to replicate most of all is the "Zombie Brain Shot" in a potion bottle. It's a real adult beverage and is supposedly tasty (I don't drink). I don't know if I can replicate the effects without the mediums mixing/dissolving. I like the way the drink jiggles and looks fleshy, very Halloween.

    It's funny you mention milk as a glue. I just recently learned that, as far as we know so far, the very first "glue" (as in the "modern concept" of an adhesive) that science has evidence of was used (of course) by the ancient Egyptians, and what do you know? It was milk! Thanks for the video and for your thorough explanations around your decisions, choices and preferences throughout the process.

    rubbing alcohol evaporates over time. I made tiny potions with rubbing alcohol, and in a few months, the alcohol had evaporated away. So there's got to be a way to seal the bottles so that the alcohold doesn't evaporate. I used wax, glue, and E6000. Nothing helped.

      Rubber corks help a lot.
      If you’re making really tiny potions maybe do the distilled water with glycerin. Where they are kept, will help or hinder your potions as well. If it is in a warmer room with sunlight, you will get way more evaporation than a cooler, room temperature room with hardly any sunlight.

    What I discovered is its hard to use metalic paint because of the extra ingredients. Since they both used mica powder, I bought some from etsy (warning, one of the sellers says its "5g" but its way too small to be 5 grams).
    Then after searching online, I found out that home depot also sells rubber corks, however they only come in black (Which is fine for me. Because its an victorian era potion bottle. I didn't use the twine method).
    I did the distilled water and the oil you mentioned too.
    So yeah, I'm happy with how they turned out! I made 2 to put on my shelf. I decided to use a glass bottle of the science beaker from Michaels in the Halloween section for the one on the shelf, another is an small plastic bottle I can use for an Halloween costume and not worry about it breaking.
    Thanks for the help!

    I'm pretty sure my glue gun was the issue.... Will regroup and finish the bottles with a new one. But I loved seeing the rope wrapping technique slowed down again. I can't wait to share my success this time. 😂

    Looking to make some prototypes of my own thanks for the in depth explanation especially why you would choose IPA over glycerin. I think I'm going to try an experiment of one pure IPA, and one half water and glycerin to see the difference side by side. I love the reminder about flammability in the IPA though!

    Iv been putting aside bottles and wanting to do this for years. I am glad you demystified the using water, demineralized water vs alcohol. I can fix my Nightmare Before Christmas water globe now! if I can get it open! I will use demineralized water and glycerine. And repaint Jack since he is peeling.
    Thanks for this tutorial. Its really expensive to get supplies in Canada but when you know what you need vs experimenting it saves a lot.
    I tried making my own body spray with mica and it failed. Now I know you can’t use regular water or 50% alcohol. I might salvage spray with mica by pouring liquid out and putting glycerine demineralized water in it instead.

    You go into such detail- this is so helpful.
    I've been trying to make some summery Christmas snow-globes (just for family, no financial incentive here). I bought some gear to make regular wintery globes but it's hot here in Australia in December so I wanted to do something with sand and blue sea type liquids. I'm going to trawl your channel to see what else I can find. I realise you're making potions but have you ever tried some hot region 'snow' (or 'sand') globes? I'll be using old jars with lids as I'll need to glue in some trees, tiny decorations or characters at the bottom of the jar- that is, glued to the lid so when the jar is upside the character will be standing up.
    I'd also love to add some colour to my oil lamps (made with used bottles). Do you have any idea of what effect it will have to add either food colouring or mica powders to the oil? Will this cause a major fire incident???

    • @CookingandCraftChick
      @CookingandCraftChick  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your summery snow globes sound fun! 😊
      As far as your oil lamps go don’t use food coloring (most of it is water based) however some non water based coloring might work, the mica should be fine 😊

    What materials do you use inside of the potions (ie the bead looking things)? We are going to do this at our carer's craft group and some of them (we have already made labels to use) sound like they could use some 'pieces' in them (beetle eyes, crow toes)
    Much appreciate the time you took to carefully explain each step and why different options work the way they do!

    Love your video! Trying to do something like this for my classroom last minute. It would be my dream potion. I was wondering if I should do this method which is way cooler, but I’m worried about evaporation. Then I thought about just normal color sand and pretend the sand is a potion. What are your insights on evaporation? I was hoping to make a keepsake that would last for how long they want to keep it for. Thanks!

    • @CookingandCraftChick
      @CookingandCraftChick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you use a rubber cork the alcohol really doesn’t evaporate as long as it’s not a hot or sunny room. I’ve had some of mine for 5 years and they still look good. You could also opt for the distilled water and a drop or 2 of glycerin or a little alcohol. If you’re really concerned with evaporation don’t seal your cork down you can always add alcohol or water to it. I hope this helps! 😊 🧪

    What about an old whiskey bottle with a cap? Would that be safe you think? We decorate the bar behind the gas stove for Halloween, and we have a smoker in the house. I tried water and highlighters in the bottle before but it got nasty, so I wanted to try again.
