I've spent so many hours playing this game and probably finished it over 50 times and I never once realized that leveling up while using a certain vocation would increase specific stats like stamina, health or magic, I just assumed that stuff goes up a certain amount every time you level up regardless of vocation. Now I know otherwise

Putting Bastion on a Sorcerer, mage, or ranger provokes them to be more aggressive in combat. It's usually not a good idea to do so, even though it boosts their physical defense.
I'm too confused to even know if I'm more or less confused than when I started this video.
year late but basicaly there is 2 kinds levels in this game... main exp and leveling... and then the 2nd star leveling... witch unlocks addons for any class but can only unlock them with 1 class so ranger has some warrior has some diffrent sets... you main exp leveling gives you your stats..so you wana level what gives you the best stats each level up/ but rank up levels aka star levels.. you get wis a star exp and you dont have to level that class to get crappy stat gains.. switch befor you level with the exp... but you keep the star levels beside you picture.... witch gives you buffs akaaddons that you cant get with maybe the class you want to level with..hope this helps if yopu deside to ever play agin...

There are two forms of experience. EXP levels your character. Discipline raises your vocation rank and is used to purchase weapon skills, core skills, and augments which are passive buffs. Each vocation has it’s own augments which unlock at a set vocation rank same as weapon skills and core skills.
Because all augments can be used as any class, it is beneficial to rank up various vocations. However you do not want to gain an EXP level in other vocations accidentally. This is because stat gains per EXP level are different for each vocation.
EXAMPLE: Sorcerer is best for magic attack, and magic defense, but is very bad for HP, stamina etc.
Because of this you need to monitor your EXP to next level to avoid leveling in sorcerer unless you specifically need more magic attack/magic defense. (EXP to next level is shown on the first page of the status screen. Unfortunately if there is an EXP bar on the hud I can’t see it.)
I hope this simplified it. I understand it but choosing best build for your play style is very confusing. It is also too easy to accidentally level up, so I never could stick to it, but I’m going to try again. I plan to save before each encounter. Best wishes:)
Having your pawn the same as your character is sooo nooo fun! I absolutely love this game, as long as I had a healer on team I was able to play nearly every vocation to Max. Sorcer and assassin were definitely the most effective and also the most fun! Loved the warrior too, good music to your vid! You liked magic, wasn't the sorcer spells just incredible?!?
The point is building your pawn just like your MC, so that your pawn is as strong as your MC in another world - with the same tendencies and behaviors and strength. This isn't a 'me' video - it's about creating a really effective pawn that is leveled so it is accessible and usable by players level 20-100 - whcih means your MC will be built effectively as well.

Though I've got nothing against min/maxing, constantly switching class seems a bit too much of a pain in the ass
It is - especially for the Strider. Essentially it's to create the strongest pawn possible at a level that still makes them accessible to players early/mid game. It's basically MMO style grind - but if nothing else it helps to learn the mechanics behind attribute distribution and the separate perk xp system

I like the switching. After a while i get a bit bored with the same rotations, so i think it's nice to change every now and then and in this game u dont need to make alts :) also this way u get to rly build your toon in a unique way as well as ur pawn. This game keeps getting better ^^

I built the Holy Knight magic machine gun build and went back and forth dragon forging everything I could. Took a couple tries but I did love the sword I got in the end.

What, the game itself? Or min-maxing a character? In all honesty you can play DD: DA as deep as you want, to every level, with the most unspecialized and random leveling of classes you can manage and do just fine. Worrying about your build ahead of time just lets you make it more balanced or more specialized, but it's certainly not necessary.
Abraham Williams this build basically makes you more overpowered than you already will be by the time you get to mid or mid-late game.
tbh i never min max and i still get broken by lv 80. Keep in mind switching between magic classes and physical classes can make it a little difficult to do either
@Melchior Magni Thanks for such comments, cause I tend to optimize my characters if I can, but it does lead to some really dull experiences, so comments like these help me to not feel bad for not going 100% in with min maxing. Oh, and remember arisens, wolves hunt in packs!
@Melchior Magni It's not about you or your character being overpowered at some point, that happens automatically around level 50-60+ or so - it's about creating a *really* strong pawn that can still be hired by people early/mid game without costing 35497433859354879 crystals. A level 30-45 pawn built properly (i.e. just like your main pawn) is hireable by a level 20 player and still viable to a player @ lvl 80+. That's the point

Very helpful guide for a new player trying to minmax. It's kind of a pain in the ass how you have to change vocations on the fly so often to do this but I guess there's a Grindy RPG charm to it as well

Haha. Levelling determines the STATS you get from the current CLASS you are playing when you level. RANKING (discipline) determines the points you get towards PERKS for whatevever class you choose to spend them on (augments)

Fuck min-maxing, i am ok with playing whatever i want and switching whenever i feel like it. Maybe stats aren't that good but i didn't really feel any big difference. But thanks for guide to people who actually care about stats more than at least some roleplay, it was pretty useful.
Just wanted to add from my experience..the golden belt always spawns in a chest at tainted mt...it's one of the ones over the side on a ledge in the area you fight the Geo Saurians. Excellent description of the ranking process btw. :) Edit to add: I think this is the one you say you passed on?
This is good advice. I just level Warrior for a bit then switch to Assassin. It works well but I like this advice for a good Strider build.

This is obviously the best "most efficient way" to level up while getting all the augments you want, the only "massive" issue is that spending so much time on different vocations in order to rank them up will absolutely ruin the already bad pacing in the this game. I was watching this for advice because it's my first playthrough, this guide was helpful in understanding the importance of what vocation you are at the moment you lvl up but as its my first playthrough I won't be trying to get all the different augments because I feel like it will end up ruining the game for me and give me burn out way before the end of the story.

I know this is very old, but I'm 40 years old, and I've been a hardcore RPG gamer since I was 8 years old. I'm an Xbox player. I am in a dry spell right now, wanting a fresh new RPG to play. I have never played Dragon's Dogma, and have really been considering starting it, but this just looks so overwhelmingly complicated, dude. I am afraid I would have buyer's remorse, because I'd be freaking out the whole time trying to get my head around this learning curve...
This is for optimizing a pawn at low level. All u need to just play is play. You will love this game

@@leonshore4336 game has three difficulties, you could play it normally on easy or normal without knowing how to play properly at first, beat the game, learn what vocation appealed more to you, learn what vocation was the most useful for your pawn (your companion), which weapons suited your play style, which armor set suited you more. Start smaller, and soon you will remember the stat gains of each class. This is a min/max guide for pawns and builds
I cheesed the entire Deamon Dungeon with a sorcerer. And I couldn't kill in a hit, I just died over and over and over again until I found a spot on the battle map where no enemy could touch me. Ninja could 1 hit kill me. That's how weak I was. I refused to build another character and just took my shit character all the way through the game. I had a lot of time on my hands in high school.

Hey man, if you go back to the Grigori area in post game, you can pick up another Golden Belt in the exact spot you find it, as well as a Flame skirt in the same chest wherever that one is if you go back

strider, then assassin or warrior to 100, then ranger the rest of the way, use tenfold flurry or deathly arrow with blast arrows = win, that is if you like using a bow and daggers, if you want a sorcerer, go mage obviousy and unlock all the augments and skills, then go sorcerer most of your way to level 100, maybe up to 60 or 70 or until your magick reaches 800 +, now at this point you need to analyze your own game style, are you spamming spells from far away or ar you constantly getting into the action, jumping in and out of it, if you the first type, go sorcerer all the way till 200 and watch how everything melts but beware, you can die so easily, so for the second style, after level 60-70 use the next 30 levels either as a strider, a fighter or a warrior or mix the three, you'll get more hp, more stamina and defenses so you can take a beating even as a sorcerer plus this will increase your physical damage output in case you would like to be a magic archer later down the road so you're competent with daggers. Sorcerer and Ranger are the best classes, they have the strongest attacks in the game. For me, ranger becomes so op it's boring, sorcerer becomes so op too but at least you get to watch cool animations and you really feel like a god whereas ranger just consists of spamming attacks and see entire healthbars just dissapear in seconds.
This is a fantastic guide to a great game.
One problem though... I've never been able to soak up all of this info in the game. Stats, debilitations, gear, vocations, skills, etc.
It's a lot to take in. Do you have any tips for just grasping all of this information? I just want to be able to kill monsters without taking tons of damage with every hit, and almost dying every 3 minutes. I'd also like to be a magick archer in the end game.
EDIT: Just took a look at the levelling/stat guide, and I came up with this...
Fighter Lvl 1-10
Sorcerer Lvl 10-25
Ranger Lvl 25-40
Assassin Lvl 40-100
Magick Archer Lvl 100+

I want to be a magick archer, but I hate playing as mage/sorcerer...
A little bit like dark Souls, each enemy has it's own move set. Learn to avoid just standing there being a meat statue, and move around a bit. Each enemy has it's own timing
Ninja Flips I am constantly moving around. It's just that when they DO hit me, it takes a chunk out of my health. I'd carry more curatives, but then I'm all weighed down.
Connor Parks Yo, unlock the Warrior and Sorcerer class and nab the first augments for them. Should slam you with some quick defense without any levels.
Damage is a little trickier with augments only. Rank 9 in Mage and rank 9 in Sorcerer. Huge returns, but a lot of spent time.

Had this game for few days some mistakes Ive realised i have done sofare , I reached lvl 12 before seeing vocation change option at gransoran inn,I ignored main storyand did like 40+ notice board missions before discovering eternal crystal in storage , My character is not same gender as pawn , I gifted my gold idle to merchant before discovering blackcat forgery service when i could have saved gold idle for game plus even !, But appearntly something ive done correct was play 10 lvls in each vocation it makes arisen seem op , I kind of ignored rank switching when maxed learning since pawn also learns to mimic player combat behavier too , As soon as i reach 62 from 57 I will be into the magic vocations , maybe i should advance story so i can use perminent character editor.
Is this necessary though or can you just play like you want the entire time and still be decent end game ?
Because actually having to grind this much would pretty much ruin the game for me...

Just saw this. My 2 cents: no, of course this isn't necessary. If I didn't, I meant to mention this is really with 2 things in mind: 1)Making a strong lower level pawn that you can pimp for crystals because he/she will be a beast in other players' worlds (thus making your character incredibly strong because you level the same) and will be hireable because your pawn won't cost 2357897593749937549357 crystals to hire, and 2)to understand the difference between Discipline and XP, in creating a min/maxed version of whatever class you decide to play.
Z0mbieZed you can play it however you want, it's only bosses like the online ur-dragon, death and maybe daimon phase 2 that kind of require more thought into your build. For example, I played carelessly with my first character and it was able to defeat all bosses but the online ur-dragon (offline is way easier), I played as a strider/assasin/ranger/magic archer and a bit of warrior here and there, ended up as a ranger, it does a lot of physical damage, magic is laughable, doesn't have lots of hp but has a shit ton of stamina, so yeah, It wasn't a walk in the park to defeat those guys. For my second character, it is only level 84 and I'm building a sorcerer, it of course doesn't have better stats than my first one because of the 100 + level difference but at level 84, it is already competent at bitterblack isle. It will be a monster at level 200.
I’d hate this game if it were necessary to play this way, thankfully it isn’t.

Im new to this game whats a good lvl to be for the final boss and a good grinding spot?
At night, bring a warrior pawn or melee pawn, make sure they can't cast spells or shoot anything at range. Bring that pawn to the greatwall, and northwest of there, near some graves you'll sometimes find a Lich who endlessly summons skeletons if you leave the lich alone. Two things: The lich sometimes doesn't show up, so cycle day and night until he does. Don't kill the Lich, otherwise he doesn't spawn for a good long while, instead fight his skeletons until just before the sun rises, then go back to the greatwall and cycle day and night. Rinse and repeat.
I love The Witcher, so I made my main character Ciri since she has the ability to travel dimensions, so she can be the protagonist in every create a character game.

Shits too confusing. Why make us play as classes we don't want for hours and hours just to be able to play the class you want without being either too spongey or too weak. I'm gonna play assassin the entire time, and if I'm too weak at the end or post game then fuck it.
Brandon Walthers I agree with you...Personally, I prefer to just focus on classes that are compable to each other....
Such as, if you want to be an assassin start as a fighter first and play 10 levels as fighter and then 10 as assassin and so forth for 50 or so levels so it builds up your defense so your not as squishy.
If you want to be Mystic knight using a Staff, start as mage, then Sorcerer. If you want to use a sword and shield, start as fighter, then switch to sorc for a bit and then to mystic knight. Etc. Another words, just focus on two or three vocations that cross over providing Stat bonuses to the weak parts of your main class. Doing min maxing using classes you don't like for buffs only takes the fun away for me.
Lol bro it's a game and you can play it any way you want. The games great with great variety so getting bored isn't a easy task.
stats dont matter that much anyways, just get goldforged equipment and everything is pretty much a piece of cake, even on hard mode..i have an assassin and switched to mage just for fun and i still destroy everything even with minimal magic

You can play 1-10 fighter and 10-200 assassin, it is the best assassin possible.
How important is that cause seems all that stopping to switch the leveling and switching again could get tedious
I had no idea that is how the leveling worked...I played this for 360 and just got it for the one. Been wondering why my pawn gets owned by melee monsters.
So if I wanted to make a str and mag strider as my pawn that can do a.ot of damage. Or should I just choose her to be strider with ranger and warrior?
Earn your Str and Mag damage augments from War, Ftr, Mage and Sorc - but level mainly as a strider to balance your damage output and attributes
Why cant I find any RPS like Guild Wars 1 with a dedicated healer class with tons of healing and protection spells..... I have searched but cant find anything....
Mostly in MMOs. Dragon Age 2 lets you build a super healer. AoE heals, passives, Res, group heals, etc.

Much easier to stream it, as there is quite a bit of grinding involved to make a decent character. We've done this a few times.

It's weird that people say you can play Dragon's dogma however you like but then tell you to use specific vocations at specific level intervals with specific stats and specific skills, but other than that, you can play however you like

Finally picked it up again last year and finished it my own way. Gonna start again in celebration of the sequel, and going to video as a reference to min max and see the difference
@@walterHonwana The thing is, you can play the game how you want. Because all vocations are OP. You dont even need to minmax in hard mode when you know what to do.

My pawn got broken i think. Can u help me out plz? I made a mage pawn intended to heal and she is doing a real good job. Mostly lvld as mage. Did get augments from warr and sorc + i ranked both strider and sorc halfway. Most lvling now at 62 has been mage for her. So now i was watching this video and i was thinking she has very low hp as well as stam for this lvl. I thought ok lets lvl strider with her, balance out a bit. She barely moves. Now mayb this is because her primary stat is set to guardian? But i cant seem to change that in the chair. Is this still fixable or will this pawn now be stuck in the same role?
Go to the tent in the encampment where you first got your pawn, and get some potions from the pawn merchant to favor your primary and secondary behaviors that you want. The chair is mainly to direct dialog/frequency of speech.

Awesome guide btw dude rly helpfull. I like to figure out things for myself but this game has some awesome but different mechanics i think than most games. These things and the amazing world and how its all played out keep me hooked :) i've heard people that find the story weird but i love it. Probably just one of these things either you love it or you hate it.
I accidentally pressed new game in my original account and lost my pawns experience 😔 it’s been awhile since playing and forgot to change difficulty so I get to keep my pawns experience but ofcourse I’m an idiot and lost everything but what’s weird is that in the rift the pawns I’ve met are still there 🤷♂️
I beat the whole game on 360, I prob spent like 50h or something back in the days. I just bought DD on the next gen so I'm watching vids just to get me warm up with the class and eveything. But I'm gonna be honest, your video confused me af lmao I have no idea wtf your talking about 😂
Every time you defeat an enemy you get two kind of points, the first class is for general leveling up and as in most games it shows up in your status menu right up; but also you get vocation points to level up the vocation's rank. The vocations points "buy" skills for your primary and secondary weapons as well as augments and pasive skills usable for a specific weapon (daggers, shields, swords, etc.) or in general (i.e.: stamina, strenght, magic, dexterity etc.), is better to defeat small enemies for quicker rank increase, or use the perseverance ring that doubles the experience points, that way you can get the best pasive skills for all the vocations. (You can make an early run in BBI as soon as you can to get the first moonstone gem and get the ring, it's not that hard). An example: you play as a Mystic Knight, you can equip clout (warrior skill), levitation or conservation (mage's skills), sinew (fighter's skill), acuity (sorcerer's skill) and leg's strenght (archer's skill).
Wow! You have completely taken all the fun out of this game in exchange for stats that really don't make that big of a difference at endgame.
Joe Mama I'm new to the game I really don't know how anything works the best advice I've gotten so far is to get to get the magic and strength boosting augments because all I really want to do is play mystic Knight but everyone makes it seem like stats matter and that you have to play as certain classes to have a decent character
John Herrera so if I want to be mystic knight, I’d switch from mage to sorcerer at level 10, and at level 20 switch to knight?
I will point out this video is a guide towards the vanilla game. The Bitterblack isle dlc offers better equipment that far outclasses anything he uses here and can be worn without penalty at lvl 40
The only thing I don't get is the practicality of ranking while doing the main quest in the beginning. If I'm out doing quest and I'm about to level up, do I have to pretty much stop what im doing and run back to town?
Or do I need to specifically go out and put aside time to farm wolves or whatever while doing this?
I literally just pick a class to work on, get a bunch of travel stones, go to the encampment then up the trail at night to kill wolves, and when I'm about to level, return to the city and change to the class that I actually want to level as. Sorcerer seems to take the longest, esp. after rank 4 or 5. If I want to rank AND level as a certain class, then I just go do quests for a few levels. If you're careful, you can play as one class, and switch to another class to turn in quests, then switch back.
but striders,or any meele vocation if that matters, have 90% pure physical skills so magic dmg have no point right?
No. Striders have the advantage of equipment that gives bonuses to magic, as well as daggers which include a huge magic damage ratio.. Plus their leveling has a bigger magic ratio per point total than anything else. (Magic is worth 1.5 to 2 points of other attributes)

Well, unless you're just going to level forever (in that case level your Sorcerer from 11-100, then Mage to 200), then just train in Mage later after switching to Sorcerer ASAP. You wont need much from any other vocations than Sorc and Mage

Ninja Flips striders don't use any sort of spells doesn't make since for it to have magic
The strongest daggers in the game split physical and magic damage, leaning heavily towards magic, which is buffed by the magic stat. Double dagger striders are balanced in both, including gear bonuses
The wiki says: " However a user's magick stat does not contribute to the damage generated from a enchanted physical weapon when performing physical attacks (see Weapon enchantment for details)." dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Magick Augments increasing magick will also increase the magick attack of enchanted weapons.

im gonna get this game when it comes out for PS4, how can i make a good Magick Archer? I was thinking level as mage to 10, then strider to 20 and then go MA for the rest of the way.
If you want a magic archer vocation the best way to start is mage, and sorcerer later to pick up the auguments that improve your magic stat. Magic bows do magic damage, go to strider only if you want the auguments from this vocation. Sorry for my bad english.
Honestly, you could play as a Mage till lv 200 and _still_ be an good Warrior, all this min/max stuff is just for completly breaking the game, beating the last boss in 1 sec and so on.

No, every kill and quest gives u up. You can not sleep to avoid updating ur pawn tho

so basically as a fighter / warrior if I want magic resistance train just before level change to sorcerer then level choose the attunement, go back to warrior ,fighter ???
Right, though you don't need to rank up Sorcerer to get the Mag. Res. augment - it's available at rank 1. The Mag. Dam. augment is the one at rank 9.
You might want to increase a warriors magic though, magic attack is just as important as physical attack when doing BBI.
I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure the Godsbane isn’t for farming, I think it’s for the very end of the game to get into NG+

I was wondering how effective it would be if you start as a Mage for the first 10 levels the switch to Ranger for about another 5 or 10 levels to get stamina then level as a Sorcerer for another 10 then switch to Magic Archer.
Mages have the lowest returns per level of any class until lvl 100.
does Bitterblack Isle have any solid story or just boss kills
Probably not so much narrated story, but really creative lore on par with the last bit of the original story
i felt it was just another side quest nothin huge, couldnt finish it though way too repetitive for me

I was really enjoying the game until I realized how stupid and grindy the stat-progression system worked.

My biggest gripe with the game: why isn't the player allowed to control the stat growth of their character and pawn directly? There is so much freedom when it comes to apperance, skills and gear, why doesn't this freedom extend to the stats themselves? If you could directly control your stat growth every time you level up, we wouldn't have to go through this confusing and tedious process at all. One of the most baffling game design decisions of this otherwise wonderful game.
Probably because vocations exist. If you could freely allocate your stats, there wouldn't much point to having vocations.
They should've allowed you to respec once you reached lvl200. That way we could both experience the game the way it was meant to be AND allow us to experiment with different setups.

One better be just as good in combat or else levelling will help little. E.g. Rey learning and mastering The Force and combat skills to fight Kylo Ren.
