  • I wanted to show my students how to make curtains in maya using the nCloth function. Let me know what you think.

    Issues I've encountered with Maya 2023 and how I handled them:
    1) In case you select the vertices as Matthew has done at 3:20 ish and you can't select the cylinder via Viewport, do it via Outliner holding the CTRL key. This also works when extruding a cylinder along a curve to make pipes for example.
    2) If your mesh looks like it's snapping into itself during the animation at level 2 of self colliding scale as Matthew did, it's probably because your mesh is smaller than his mesh and so the world scale threats it differently, resulting in self-comp. . Consider messing around with this value until you don't get the desired result without it compenetrating into itself.
    3) If you've set your animation framerate to 24FPS but your animation still is faster than 24FPS, it's because you've set it to "play every frame" in the Animation Preferences tab. You can find it at the very bottom right corner, under the "go to End of the animation" button. Switch to 24FPS x1 to get 24FPS framerate, however you can set it to whatever you want.
    Many thanks Matthew for sharing your skills with us!

    this was really informative, and very helpful to see how you experimented with the settings.
    thank you so much for the tutorial!

      I kind of am, it's more that I am working with an unfamiliar program. I used to do my work in Maya until I just couldn't deal with Autodesk anymore. I switched to blender a long time ago so I typically do this stuff in blender. Working in Maya is a little odd for me sometimes, and it is a trial remembering how Maya handles certain things. 😅

    Brilliant tutorial. Thanks very much for taking the time to create a very informative and well presented NCloth tutorial 👍

    Thanks for the tutorial! It worked fine for me. I'm working on an animation and want to get this effect within the first few frames. Is there anyway to do that rather than waiting for the simulation to run?

    • @matthewdesaart
      @matthewdesaart  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change the frame that the simulation starts at, so instead of starting at frame 1 you can have it start at frame -50 or whatever you need. But to get the shapes that you want out of it you have to let the simulation play out, there really isn't a way to skip the simulation calculation phase.

    My "point to surface" is not working, when I compared it with yours I noticed that when I use it it doesn't create the "NRigit 1" nor the "dynamicConstraint 1", what do I do?

    • @matthewdesaart
      @matthewdesaart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to make sure that you have the vertices selected then shift click the object you want to constrain those vertices to. Once that is done you then want to go to constrain > Point to surface. Also make sure that your ncloth isn't clipping through the object you are trying to constrain it to

    shift click on cylinder only shows vertex selection mode, how can I select the whole object to constrain my Ncloth points after I have them selected

    • @kerrithornton5704
      @kerrithornton5704 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but I'm posting this in case it might help anyone else: I had this same issue (lost my mind for about an hour trying to figure it out); turns out it's as simple as selecting the vertices, then holding CTRL (on windows, not sure if it's different for macs) and clicking on the cylinder in the outliner. Holding shift does not do it. It might work by clicking on the object itself, but I clicked on the object in the outliner because otherwise I kept selecting vertices accidentally. Also, I had to make sure that my cylinder was floating above the plane, not touching it.

    i cant do the part on 4.50. for some reason if i scale the bar down on frame 60, the bar also gets smaller on frame 1. basically i can only animate movement, not scale. does anyone know what i might be doing wrong?

    hello I am running into an issue when I try to do the ncloth, I can't get the folds to occur nor does the plane just fall when the ncloth is applied initially, any advice?

    • @matthewdesaart
      @matthewdesaart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always recommend deleting the object history before applying the ncloth. If that doesn't work check your playback speed on your timeline and make sure it's set to play every frame

      @@AYOTRAV are you using the right constraint? (points to surface) The other thing that you need to do is make sure that when you go to select your verticies that you only have the ncloth object selected. Once you have those top verticies selected (or whichever verticies you choose to constrain) you then shift click on the object you want to assign the constraint to and apply the points to surface constraint. It's one of those, I can't see what you are doing so I can't tell what's going on kind of things.

    next time u ever do Animation , just mention when you set the KeyFrames ;) and dont just imply it.
