    LYRICS (English Translation):
    You should be knowing
    That situation you got
No, there's no turning back any more
    Society, values, time
You cried out in a loud voice
They all just won't wait for me
Uncaring indifference, that's the sad reality
Why don't you give it a shot
You know how it goes. Everybody
Thinking with their tiny little minds
In their interest or not, whatever
The answer's just the same. Ready?
    Sure, let's come back here
    Welcome to my home!
Candy or the whip, which do you like?
    When you'vе chosen, rise up!
Is this wherе we say bye-bye?
Call me, call me, call me, call me
    Can't make promises
But this way for sure more enjoy time
It can't work out for everything!
But just strive to try my best!
    May I take your order?
My mind cannot erase the heartache
We all carry some kind of burden
    Living with worries and regrets
    I've got a feeling
    Nobody's time is meaningless
They say even dreams lead somewhere
    Looking for faults, whatever
    Who cares! Are you ready?
    Seize the moment!
    Let's come back here
    Welcome to my home!
The sweet and the bitter. Each one's own
    You want to play? Childish!
    So, already it's bye-bye?
Call me, call me, call me, call me
Trying to stand tall, don't make it a joke
Tears will also make a rainbow
For sure this dreary day will too
Listen to your heart. It will change
    May I take your order?
    I've got a feeling
It's a common sight. In the crowd
    I say we all do our own thing;
    Indulge yourself, it's okay
Just don't miss the next wave. Ready?
    One moment of pain
    Ten moments of delight
Look for a reason, lift up your head
    Right, let's make a start
A step forward or back? It's just a state of mind
Winning or losing. The dice are cast
Your ragged reality, kick it away
    Just for me
    Seize the moment!
    Let's come back here
    Welcome to my home!
Candy or whip, which do you like?
    When you've chosen, rise up!
Is this where we say bye-bye?
Call me, call me, call me, call me
    Can't make promises
But this way for sure more enjoy time
It can't work out for everything
But just strive to try my best!
    May I take your order?

Remember, these are the words of Miku Kobaku. The little pigeon who could. This is a lady who worked 3 jobs while going to school to save enough money to go to Tokyo and fulfill her dreams of becoming a rock star. It's really cool to know that. Miku has lived out her words over and over again. She wanted BandMaid succeed so she came up with the idea. And then when it seemed like her voice was not strong enough, they recruited another singer and she gracefully stepped into the background. At least vocal. and then they thought they needed another guitar and so she learned to play the guitar while performing on stage with band made for God's sake. As I've said before, she's not strumming kumbaya around the campfire. She's on stage with one of the best Rock bands In the universe. I gotta tell you. I admire her so much. She has worked so hard and thank god she's achieving such great success!

Dice the second song i ever heard from them in early 2019.
The first one was Play - Live from Shinkiba Studio Coast nov 2017. They melted my brain and i was in an instant a Maidiac for life.

Itai used both "poppy" and catchy" and I think "catchy" is more relevant here - it is straight hard rock but with catchy riff and catchy chorus ... like the best hard rock songs actually. "Dice" is a regular on their set lists. Funny that Itai mention Band-Maid and The Warning, both are fans of each others and even met at Aftershock festival last year (just check YT with "The Warning Band-Maid Aftershock")

This recording, from World Domination, is almost six years old. Consider how SAIKI’s voice has changed since then. Her voice is now deeper, bigger, and richer. Listen to a recent live recording of DICE for comparison.
For hard and heavy BAND-MAID, listen to “I’ll” (audio only).
The drives home the message in the final scene, where the girl (who has been sitting in her parents’ basement?) rises, removes her blindfold, and takes a step to venture forth, leaving behind the doll (a symbol of passivity and childhood innocence).

Dice is just a great song, period. Kanami's compositions are always amazing and show her true genius as a composer. I look at her as Japan's Brian Wilson, she has that kind of talent that is innate and not learned. She is head and shoulders above any composer right now that I can think of. If you also look closely at the lyrics they are perfectly layered and really punch you in the face. As far as what's behind the song, it's obviously about pushing forward and making choices and damn the closed-minded thinking. The part where Saiki sings, "What do you prefer, candy or the whip ???" is just so typical. I have heard other opinions where this song is partly about a significant group of Japanese who become shut-ins and never leave the home. And if you look at the video and the girl playing with the doll and add in the lyrics it could be that's part of the meaning. I think you guys would enjoy "YOLO" the same way you enjoyed "Dice", but with Kanami doing really different things within the structure of the song that make you think, "why did she do that ???? But it works perfectly !!!" lololololol

BAND-MAID do have a couple heavier, more Metal influenced songs. 'Different', 'Black Hole' and 'Rinne' all come to mind, and don't forget they were commissioned to do the season two closing theme song for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura. It's called 'Shambles'. There is a LIVE version, which is great, but I think the OMV is even better. They have over 100 songs and counting, many with LIVE versions, and only a handful OMVs that are better than the LIVEs. 'Rinne' is one, though it was based on a Japanese Horror movie that used lots of 8mm film, so that's how it was shot, video is trashy but the sounds is Thrashy! 'Blooming' is another with a great OMV. It''s a Power Pop Masterpiece that should be a Anime Theme Song. 'Black Hole' is LIVEish. Shot LIVE without and audience in a Double Feature with 'Manners'. But 'Hate' is sort of dark, yet kind of joyous too. It's from Lollapalooza and paired with 'Dice' which you just did. It has a great Call & Response "Battle" between MISA and Kanami.

If you want something faster and more metal, then the MV for "Rinne" would be a good choice. Other strong contenders would be "Black Hole" (which is controlled chaos), "Warning!", "No God", and "Blooming". I'm sure I've left some out.

BAND-MAID is a band that proves music doesn't need to be _either_ metal, _or_ hard rock, _or_ punk rock, _or_ pop. It is perfectly possible for it be all of that at the same time in one song, whilst never losing sight of a melody. That's why I love this band; there is always a melody and there is always a catchy element no matter how hard they get, even in their instrumentals.

What you are saying about BAND-MAID is exactly what I love about them. Hard enough at times to satisfy my need to head bang without hurting my neck with enough pop to give me a really big smile. They really do combine all of the things I have always loved about rock music into one style of writing songs. I never get bored listening to them because it's the same and different at the same time. lol

Hi Guys! Another great reaction (should we expect any less?). Personally, I hope they keep with their hard rock sound. It's what makes them stand out from the others. They tease you just enough with the metal idea without going overboard. I prefer Mincho solo's where she combines speed notes with those rhythm chord changes. Combined with MISA's intro into the solo, it's just perfection. Makes it sound more full and just bad-ass.

Another Info file, this time about the song DICE.
The song's basically about taking risks, seizing opportunities, putting in the work to get the rewards. Roll the dice. Take your shot.
The doll is just a doll. It's harmless - in fact, that's kind of the point. The doll is a simulated person, it's safe. The girl is blindfolded, in the dark, holding the doll for comfort. She's sheltered. At the end of the video the girl abandons the doll, lifts up the blindfold, steps into a blinding light that represents the uncertainty and opportunity that she's been hiding from.
This song is a call to arms. In Japan they have a sub-culture of shut-ins, people who are either unemployed or under employed who basically won't move out on their own. They stay in their parent/grandparent's home basically playing with dolls or video games, instead of getting out and living life and trying to better themselves. This song is calling them out. Challenging them, "Are you gonna stay in there playing with DOLLLLLLLLLS like a little kid? Or are you going to stand up take off the blindfold, leave the dolls and games behind and step out into the real world?" At the end of the video, the girl puts down the doll, takes off the blindfold and steps into the light.
It's called Hikikomori in Japan and is defined as: "pulling inward, being confined", also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. The concept is primarily recognized only in Japan, although similar concepts exist in other languages and cultures. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youths have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals. - Definition from Wikipedia
You may want to check out the LIVE performance of DICE that was coupled with Hate? from their performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago in August 2023. TRUST ME, you WANT to see and experience it. It is taken from the Hulu stream and can be found over on @realdocloco channel. All he did to it was to boost the audio slightly, but it sounds almost as if you were there without the volume. But no post processing other than the volume boost, so you can hear just how tight they are as a live band.
And yes, the Ladies themselves consider their sound to be Hard Rock, but as you have found they dabble in ALL the genres. If it serves the song, they will use it.

Good choice 👍🏼 the music video for “DICE” is the way to go for a first listen.
This was the third song I ever heard from them. It really hits the “riff rock” vibe, but includes the signature Maid elements of the bass solo to guitar solo, and the downshifting dynamics for a bridge before hitting the gas on the outro.
Intro work by MISA and Akane is reminiscent of GnR “You Could Be Mine,” which is a compliment.
That’s what they do. They bring elements of yesteryear punk and hair metal wrapped in their own progressive fusion rock.
“DICE” is the recommendation for anyone who grew up on old school rock and metal.

How about some homework?? JRock News (web) interviewed Marty Friedman (former Megadeath guitarist) who now lives and works in Japan. In the interview he talks about working with Japanese musicians, the importance of the education system and it will even tell you what “bukatsu” means!!
Are you interested in "historic" Japanese bands from the 80's and 90's? I'll even use Buy a Coffee!!

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretsky
Regarding styles of music - back in the '60s someone asked Louis Armstrong what he thought of The Beatles, trying to bait him into dissing them. He replied, "There's good music and bad music. I like the good kind." Good music is played with passion and emotion whether it's classical, jazz, country, rock/metal ... and whether it's by Fela Kuti, Sergio Mendes, Bob Marley, Sturgill Simpson, Fats Waller, Emmanual Ax, or Jimi Hendrix.

I meant to add this - since August last year they've been combining this song with *"Hate?"* from the "Unleash" EP. The reason I bring this up is because the MISA->Kanami solo break is expanded in "Hate?" into a back-and-forth bass/guitar battle that f*****g epic.

Music is still subjective...like everything in life.....I'm not a beatles an..does that mean I don't like good music...no..I just don't like the beatles...or metallica..and many others...Even music which is played with passion and emotion doesn't mean everyone is gonna like it..such is.

Recommendation Comment separately for your consideration.
I’ve been riding along with all your other reactions. Knowing that you tend towards harder, darker tones, I would highly recommend “Rinne,” OMV. Even the video is grainy horror movie-like.
Another aggressive Maid song is “Warning!” Official music video also. Fast cars, fire, explosions…thunderous drums and nonstop musical action

I use DeepL (free) as the translator for Japanese. The translation seems to be excellent. A tid-bit from Asami, in writing lyrics in Japanese many times it does not work relative to the flow. The example she gave the word You in Japanese is 3 syllables, they all use English to maintain the flow because I'm sure there are a lot more "Unworkable" words.

I hate when people say "I like all kinds of music" because its not ever a true response. When I ask "what do you like" I'm asking what can I play for you? Saying you like all kinds is a politically correct answer, it looks weak, wishy washy. And it is ALWAYS THE WORST ANSWER! 😊
