  • My son and I set off on a 9 day adventure that would take us from California, through New Mexico and deep into Texas where we explore Big Bend National Park and Padre Island National Seashore. Join us as we head off the beaten path, do a little camping in the mountains, desert and on the beach and cook up some great chow at camp.

    0:47 That was our group at Padre Island! I owned the silver jeep to the right of the frame. Saw ya eating at a BBQ joint in San Antonio and didn't wanna bother ya! We were the big group that sat down just as you guys were heading out. I was the sunburned tomato! We couldn't believe it was you! Drive safe and be safe guys

    I'm from Texas and the lack of public land is one of my biggest complaints about the state. There is so much seemingly empty unused land too.

    • @cabiv545
      @cabiv545 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Because Texas was a country when it joined the US, it kept its public land.

    • @RanchoTexano
      @RanchoTexano 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also the Spanish and later Mexico made massive land grants to bring settlers to Texas. Most of these were honored when Texas became a Republic and when it became a state. The rest belonged to Texas as the post above explains

      In regards to overlanding in Texas, the rewards are great if you're willing to do the research.

    • @heavymetal9099
      @heavymetal9099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      " There is so much seemingly empty unused land too."
      It's private land. Owned by private citizens. That's like complaining about not allowing people to come traipse around your own backyard.

    • @huehuehue-x3c
      @huehuehue-x3c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@heavymetal9099 It's pretty dumb to argue that millions of miles of unimproved land are the same as your own backyard. Sure, people own it but unless they are all employing dozens of ranch hands to protect the land, it would be pretty easy to camp on the so-called "private" land.

    @Trailrecon Great video as ALWAYS, Brad. You should be in TIME magazine for Father-of-the-Year.
    How did towing that Patriot Trailer feel on the trip? It looks like your JL's hitch receiver needs a hitch with a greater rise height in order to level that trailer out a bit, it would drive a lot better. The trailer is nose-diving and probably high on tongue weight. The Jeep's rear suspension is compressing a bunch, which is unloading the front suspension and throwing off your normal-operating-steering/alignment. Leveling out the trailer would transfer more of the trailer's load onto its own (trailer) axle, instead of the Jeep's rear axle.
    I don't have tow experience with a Jeep and lifted suspension, so that situation is an anomaly to me. If my suggestion was no good, someone please chime in for our buddy Brad.

    I will lift it 3inch w/ 40s and turn it to my overlander this way i won't have to worry about the very low payload the jeep suffers from. And I can tow whatever i want with over a +1,000 Ft/Tq and 600+ mi range with an aux fuel tank.

    Big Bend is definitely a fun spot, also if you come back make sure you venture down to Terlingua. Marfa and Alpine are also neat towns to stop at. In New Mexico you have the Carlsbad caverns, and just east of Carlsbad you have the Hackberry lake OHV area. North west of Carlsbad you have the town of Cloudcroft, and the Lincoln national forest.

    Lmao Rudy’s for bbq in Texas?? Oh well maybe in a future trip you’ll get into experience bbq at a real place. In the corpus area Mike Cotten’s is the son of the Classic Joe Cotten’s BBQ. There’s also a new place in corpus killing the game but I can’t remember name right now.

    You were so close but next time try to hit Boco Beach and see the Star Ships and complex that SpaceX is building. Took my son there last month going the opposite direction on a 3,000 mile round trip from from Oklahoma to Boco Beach/SpaceX to BBNP/Alpine to McDonald Observatoryand back to Oklahoma . If you go back to Big Bend (which I now consider to be crowded) need to try an area with no people in the wildlife management area. My mom's cousins lived on the east side of the park 100 years ago and left when it became a park. Their home site is still there (just the walls now) on the bank of the Rio Grand which is now a camp ground (not in the park proper) and is on the end of a long jeep trail that is more difficult and nothing like the roads in BBNP which are all easy. We took our Cherokee on part of Black Gap. Black Gap is easy but since it has been on the Jeep Badge of Honor it has

    You were so close to Corpus Christi Navy Base. Surprised you didn't want to stay there. They have nice camping areas. Also, Rudy's cream style corn IS THE BEST EVER...

    I've been running PINS for 25+ years. The fishing can be phenomenal. Just make sure to always check the weather and marine forecast. When the surf comes up the dunes there's nowhere to go. While Rudy's is ok BBQ, it's nowhere near the best. Stay a little longer next time. Oh, and spring time in BBNP or PINS is likely to be windy.

    I have been to the Gila National Forest and seen the cliff dwellings. And also been to South Padrea Island. When you go back to Great Bend Country have to camp down by the river, Rio Grand. I grew up in El Paso, TX.

    Growing up in Corpus Christi I learned to 4x4 of that area of North Padre Island. Sure brings back memories of my 1985 Toyota 4Runner and pulling tourists out out of the sand for beer.

    Hi.. I'm in Albuquerque and camp out in the Sante Fe Nat'l Forest often near Jemez.. I'm also going to hit Padre Island Seashore for my solo vacation. I've never been there and need some beach camping... Thank you for this video !

    Black Gap is a fairly easy trail. I've done it in a stock 1998 F150 2wd manual. But it does have some nice views. Old Ore rd is a bit more remote.
    FYI, regular visitors to the park don't like telling people about the park. Because we like that it's the least visited, and don't want it to be full wien we go.

    Nice video on Padre Island camping. My son is a Marine flight instructor at Corpus Christi and lives on North Padre Island. He has fished extensively in Laguna Madre. He is floating the Smith River in Montana this coming August. What make is your camper trailer?

    I notice that you are still using your mini iPad(?) for using Gaia even though you now have the LCD monitor in your Jeep. Is there a reason why? Not being critical, I'm just trying to decide whether to mount my mini iPad or just use Gaia through the Jeep monitor. Thanks in advance and great video as usual!

    Not knowing much about Texas other than they value freedom, I’m shocked to learn that there is a limited amount of public lands. Especially requiring permits to primitive camp, that’s crazy to me

    Just started watching your channel. . That was awesome to watch. Love the fatter son exploration. You must be real proud of your son. I’m new to the jeep scene and had a question. Who makes those great looking chassis night lights ? Looks like you 3-4 or underneath. Thanks a bunch. JJ

    You only have an annual pass? As a vet, and I would assume you have some VA disability, you can get a American the beautiful lifetime pass for around 80 dollars... worth checking into..

    Such great gear and sharing of your experiences. They are truly wonderful. Unfortunately, you are quickly becoming irrelevant to the far majority of us who are simply weekend warriors with limited means. Most of us can't afford to exist at your level, thus I have discontinued watching since everything you do now has left the far majority of us behind. Come back to the basics of where your show began so we can actually relate again. No point in watching your show anymore.

    don't know if you've made it back to Texas yet but I would recommend checking out Big Bend Ranch State Park on your next visit right next to the national park but even less visited.
