This song became a hit at a time when the Vietnam War was in full swing. Hundreds of thousands of Americans separated from their loved ones, with the added worry of many not coming back alive or severely injured at the very least... Can you imagine the emotions, especially with an emotional song like this? Thanks for playing this great tune JT!

Actually the Vietnam war just really getting started in 1965, it was only in 1967 that things really heated up. It was one of the reasons for the violent protests in 1968 in Chicago at the Democrat Convention. Nixon ran on the platform of bringing the troops home and ending the war.

OMG...the late Bobby Hatfield! I was 15 years old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. No one has sang this song he did. He owns this song. No auto tunes just pure raw talent. We lost him in 2003. RIP Bobby! We miss your beautful voice! 💖 💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏

As a 40-year-old, I feel as though I grew up in the wrong generation. I love my 80's & 90's stuff, and wouldn't trade it for the world. But, hearing stuff like Chuck Berry, Elvis, Righteous Brothers makes me wish I could have grown up in the '50s. The cars, the music, the respect people had for one another. Obvious things would need to be changed in that regard though; not everyone was treated with the respect they deserved.
The Righteous Brothers also did a cover of "Georgia On My Mind" which was incredible.
Some other songs worth listening to
Josh Turner - Would you go with me (I think you'll enjoy his voice)
    Disturbed - Sound of Silence
The Beatles - Hey Jude / Let it Be
    Love and positivity

Great reaction & I'm glad to see so many younger people discovering all the amazing music I was lucky to grow up hearing. i was born two years after this performance, but I always heard it played at home & on the radio. It's been one of my all time favorite love songs since I was a young kid. This song has been covered many times by many great artists but Bobby Hatfield's version is probably the most well known & beloved the world over. Yes, you are correct - It was the main love theme for the movie GHOST starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, & Whoopi Goldberg (she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress that year). This was definitely Bobby's song as no other can match his performance - so silky smooth & melodic, such a one of a kind ethereal voice that can make any lady (or man) swoon - LOL! Keep in mind also that he did this on live TV. This was back in 1965, years before any computer aided autotune. This is what we call Blue Eyed Soul. My late uncle used to call this & other love songs like it from back in the day "a guaranteed panty dropper" :-D

This song was written by a 16-year-old boy. He wrote it for a girl that he had a crush on in hopes she would hear it. He did not hear it sung in public for 19 years when it became the score for the movie “Unchained”. Elvis and Joan Baez recorded it. Compared to Bobby Hatfield’s rendition they sound like karaoke singers. It was featured in one of the sexist scenes in movies in the film Ghost between Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. By that time she had married someone else.

'Unchained' is a 1955 prison film directed by Hall Bartlett and starring Elroy Hirsch, Barbara Hale, Chester Morris, Todd Duncan, and Johnny Johnston. The movie was based on the non-fiction book 'Prisoners are People.' By Kenyon J. Scudder. The film is best remember for its theme song, "Unchained Melody."
Todd Duncan and African American who is an opera singer, and actor was the first to sing the song. He plays one of the prisoners in the movie where he sings this song. Remembering his wife and family he has left behind. And the loneliness he feels everyday while in prison. " AND TIME GOES BY SO SLOWLY, AND TIME CAN DO SO MUCH, ARE YOU STILL MINE!"
"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North used the music as a theme for the little known prison movie ;Unchained' (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.
Unchained Melody has since become a standard, and one of the 20th century, most recorded songs most notably by the "Righteous Brothers." According to the songs publishing house and administrator over 1,500 recordings and counting of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artist, in multiple languages.
Ten years after its first released on the film Unchained (1955). Bobby Hatfield the other half of the dynamic duo "Righteous Brothers" Gives one of the greatest live television performances on the Andy Williams show (1965) that has stood the test of time. His version of Unchained Melody has become the standard for which all other artist perform this song.
Note: In 1981 the movie "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore featured unchained melody as its theme song. The vocals used in the film was the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. The rest as they say is history.

BOBBY HATFIELDS' PERFORMANCE IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR" PLUS. HE DISPLAYED HIS RAW, NATURAL GOD GIVEN AMAZING MUSICAL TALENT - AMEN
HE SUNG THIS SONG SOFTLY, SWEETLY, SMOOTHLY, SENSUALLY AND WITH SOUL GRIPPONG PASSION THAT WAS SO PURE & CLEAN & ELEGANT AND POWERFULLY GOOD
I HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS OF THIS SONG (incl Elvis), BUT BOBBY SUNG IT THE BEST - PERIOD . HE TRULY OWNS THIS SONG.
I SAW MANY GIRL REACTORS TO THIS AND MOST WERE EMOTIONAL OR TEARY OR OVERWHELMED OR SPEECHLESS OR "FELL IN LOVE" WITH BOBBY.
