New complexity works by the likes of Finnissy and Ferneyhough are of course stunning examples of 20th-century composition, however I do wish Finnissy was as open-minded with people as he his with tonality and harmonic framework - ‘I would admit to being complex but I’m not very interested in people that aren’t... If you’re a superficial, shallow person, why on earth would you expect me to be interested in you? - I’m not, go away’. I’d expect more from and educationist and a Professor at Southampton University - I wonder the extent to which this attitude might affect NSS feedback on composition! Seems to me as though Finnissy’s approach to composition is complex, but his approach to people is pretty basic - how ironic.
Maybe it's because he just knows that nobody likely to engage with him is going to claim superficiality and shallowness - except possibly to be contrarian, which would up that person's interestingness a tad.
'New complexity' - new stupidity. Everything ingenious is simple, but not everything simple is ingenious. A little man likes to hide his insignificance behind complex things.
@@Cryseris Why 'new complexity' is new stupidity? - Mastery in any field is determined by ability to get maximum results applying minimum efforts. 2+3=5. 2+5-7+162-157 also equals 5. If you have 2 and need 5 in the end, which way would you proceed? 'New complexity' contributes NOTHING to music evolution as an artform. Instead, it brings music to the dead-end.

Ah new complexity! Them were the days :)

nice snippet from Three Motets - wonder who the singer was
Hang on! Was that Ian Pace sat in all the seats at the end??
Yeah, it sure looked like him!
He is surprisingly fruity 💅
he's openly gay... so what?
@@urbulibaba He is? I had no clue lol
where can I watch the entire BBC documentary on New Complexity? It seems that the link in the description no longer works...

Well, that certainly would be a 'complex' way of doing things... I very much doubt it though, but nice theory.
His compositions are as shitty as his personality. How quaint.
Met him once - had an awful pretentious atmosphere around him and radiated exactly the energy that audiences think new complexity is.
He's a pretentious arse
He seems to be a thoroughly unlikeable and difficult person.
What is the Oboe piece at the beginning?
Edit: I think i found it, "Pavasiya"
Is it
@@achoikomposition yes
The oboist is probably Christopher Redgate.

Why?
Everything he says is effectively a protracted yawn. Much like his music. A dog playing piano at least has some entertainment value.
Stupid composer right there
yup shame on him for calling it music
He's not a "composer." He's a fraud who tricks people into thinking that the trash he writes is complex music.
