I was recently hit by a car whilst on my motorcycle, due to the driver failing to give way at a roundabout.
Spent the next two weeks bed ridden, and over 2 months on crutches - it has been 4.5 months since, and I have still not recovered completely and am now out of work.
All the driver ever said to me was "didn't see you" while I was laying on the ground in the middle of the road. Not even a sorry. He's probably forgotten about the whole incident and continues to live his life, but for me, I'm reminded with literally every step that I take.

As a fellow rider I hate that these stories are all too common. I have never been in an accident with my bike but I can sympathies. My roommate lent his friends his bike for the week and he was struck and killed by a van turning in front of him. The van driver never checked to see if anyone was there. The move was so sudden his friend could not react in time. My roommate decided to hang up his helmet after that and not ride again. I suppose he felt guilt (even though he shouldn't have had to) for something that another careless and reckless person did. A friend lost and another fellow rider off the roads. I hope things turn around for you and you continue to heal physically and mentally. I hope you are able to find work and get your life back. I know its a cliche thing to say, especially at a time when the world feels very unfair but you have your life. I don't say that to belittle your experience but to encourage you to fight back against the misfortunes that life presents us with.

As a Motorcycle Safety and Awareness instructor for ABATE of Illinois, I applaud this video and the folks involved in getting it produced. This is one of the best, hard hitting, get into the kid's head videos I've seen. I have shared this on my Facebook page and asked everyone I know to do the same. Awareness is the key to preventing motorcycle accidents and this video hammers the reasons why home like no other I've seen, including the one we use for our classes. The only thing I might quibble with is the motorcyclist could have more appropriate safety gear but that is a different conversation. Good job.

Jim McGee I realize this video is an attempt to educate the non-riding population about being more cautious and aware of motorcycles on the road. That being said, I can see the argument that the video is not for riders but for drivers - so, I shouldn't be addressing the rider. However, assuming the injuries that occur from the accident portrayed are going to be above and beyond the help of proper riding gear is 100% not a responsible, or valid, argument to have. On top of that, who are you helping? I speak from personal experience when I tell you that "elbow rash" is not the only thing proper protective gear helps protect the rider from. Ignorance is bliss? Maybe on TH-cam...from your comfy chair. Not on a motorcycle! Merry Christmas!

      NOSQUIDDING.com couldn't agree more.
The problem is that people take 1 driving course when they are 16-18 years old. And then go 40 freaking years without an evaluation. That's insanity. I'm proud to say I receive enough speeding tickets to require taking a safety course once per year. I've avoided countless accidents on my bike. And before I _even_ bought my bike, I bought my gear. We should all HAVE to take a safety course once per year. It would increase state revenue, decrease traffic accidents, and prevent idiots & the ignorant from driving.

I'm a motorcycle rider and had 6 in my lifetime. I've been looking at the motorcycle safety videos which are helpful and most material already known. Some I find of no use but is in the course they have you take today. I was just wondering why they don't have the same number of videos for 4 or more wheel drivers making them aware of cycles. After all the cars are the problem in... I would say at least 70% of accidents. I had one guy looked me in the face while sitting in the center turn lane and was looking at him to see if he saw me, and what did he do? He pulled over into me and forced me between his car and the car in the lane to my right and I was now riding the line. So much for... I didn't even see him!

Damn good video for sure,If People could really start to realize how dangerous
a vehicle can be, the damage it and the driver can inflict on someone in so short
a time, with all that speed and weight,We have survived without cell phones for
decades, we can at least pull into a parking lot if we really need to make a call.
At 30 mph if you take your eyes off the road for three seconds you will have gone
132 feet, 176 feet while you took 4 seconds to unwrap that burger and you will
have traveled 220 feet for five seconds as you looked for your freaking fries! and
you will not have seen the road. At 50 mph, taking your eyes off the road for 3
seconds means you went 220 feet and not knowing what the hell you were doing.
I suppose accidents would greatly decrease if everyone would be charged
for vehicular homicide and it would be up to the driver to prove his/her innocence.

Its a shame the cruiser at the stop light had his blinker on. You would think they would re shoot for a better example for a training video

    • @davidweed1513
      @davidweed1513 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Wandering Beast - Nice catch! We decided not to re-ilm the scene - even though his blinker is on - because of two reasons. 1) The cost, time, and logistics of calling back the entire production crew, actors, local police to close the road again for shooting, etc was just too great and 2) How often do riders forget to cancel their blinkers? A lot. So now the scene becomes a great conversation starter for the driving students it is intended for - just because a bike is signaling (or a car for that matter) doesn't mean it is going to turn. If, in assuming the rider was going to turn, you turned - what would have happened?

    • @antoineverfaille3661
      @antoineverfaille3661 10 ปีที่แล้ว

That was exactly wat I was going to post. And I do understand the reasons for not shooting the scene over but... that part is wat triggered my mind and made the interesting part fade away.

David Weed Also remember that car indicators self cancel but bike ones don't - and in a car you can hear it ticking but on a bike you can't. As my dad says, "all the indicator means is his bulb's working".

Ali3nat0r Many bikes' directional indicators do self-cancel, however some don't, and the rider sometimes doesn't notice they are still flashing.

as a fellow motor cycle rider , I have seen instances
like this far too often. fortunately they've been near misses.
they've happened to me, they've happened to those I ride with.
I must agree wholeheartedly with BIG BEAR, when you are in your car,
PLEASE ,,,, look TWICE bikes, because of their size are VERY difficult
to see , and it's hard to judge their distance and speed.
please, please , PLEASE, watch out for motor cycles, for I don't want have
to die ,,,,,,, like Randy had to. so, DON"T KILL ME!

This is actually a pretty cool commercial. It would've been beneficial to include the previous year's and current year's motorcycle death and injury statistics to really show how many people end up as victims. It is almost a daily occurrence here in Florida. It really sucks when the driver of the vehicle gets a reckless driving ticket and the biker gets the Coroner's Certificate. Driving.seems to be about 4th or 5th >most Important things to do while driving. Texting, tick tock, music selection, fb, etc... You know, everything else EXCEPT driving and paying attention.

Sorry to hear that Paul, People just don't take driving anywhere as seriously
as they should. The States should be VERY strict dealing with negligent
drivers, two to three tons of steel at speed is deadly dangerous and people
don't have enough respect for that.

I am wondering a bit here, the kid swerved into oncoming traffic, Randy is skidding
to a stop, The kid's burger is seen floating as if time is frozen, would that be a better time to give the illusion there was a wreck and everything hence was the dream Randy
had while in a coma, the speedometer in kid ' s car showed 32 miles but the car was
not moving, then he gets out of the car, Randy is walking towards him, they talk, both
get into the car, Randy tells the kid, "step on the gas and stay left," then it seems the car went through a time warp.

I ride all year round in Seattle/Renton/Snohomish I can't tell you the number of times people push me out of my lane when merging. It happens so much that I don't even care anymore. If anyone reads this the biggest thing I want people to know is that at NIGHT MAKE SURE its a motorcycle not a CAR even though the headlights on a bike look like a CAR that's faraway at night. So many times people will pull out 30 feet in front of me while I'm doing 45 (the speed limit) even if I'm in the far left lane. Or worse people take a left turn right in front of me doesn't matter what lane I'm in.

My son, John, was killed in an incident just like the beginning of this video. The driver of the car was distracted by something, they would not say what. The person received a negligent driving citation, while I lost my 23 year old son.

    Hello Philip Natale,
You don't sound like a biker, but frankly biking is FUN ! seriously!
I realize the dangers in biking but I'd rather ride a motorcycle 50 miles
than driving a car 100 miles, Maybe it is the wind in my face, maybe
it is a matter of hystory and the men who rode bikes during the war
maybe there are a hundred other reasons but to me is is a very enjoyable
    hobby.
I can't say I will never get wracked up and sure as hell hope it never happens
BUT I am on the road legally, and I don't do any of the crazy shit I see in some
video's like lane splitting although it is legal in California but the biggest two
factors are, plenty of time and space cushion and keeping the bike in the best
condition, doing a pre ride and making sure everything is working as it should,
good tread on tires, brakes, lights horn, oil and gas is good, tire pressure.
Yeah I am legal but that does not mean I never rode without an endorsement,
I put about a thousand on the clock before I got endorsed but I rode yrs ago
legally and quite frankly I could not wait to get riding again, for one thing, I did
not want to wait a month and a half to get an endorsement and frankly if you don't
ride like a moron and you do obey the law, most likely you could ride a long time
but is the stress worth it? I was on the hi-way not speeding but not licensed
either and I take an exit, looking in my rear view mirror I see a cop, DAMN!
well he took a right turn to my great relief.
But when it comes right down to it, even getting caught in the rain or some
roadside problem that can't be fixed, maybe just running outa gas I did not
have the bike long when I found out the reserve valve did not work even though
there was gas, but with all of what could happen, we will ride.

*Perhaps if you’d Not been distracted eating that burger, you’d have had both time and inclination to take a Second Look!!*
In reading through comments, it appears to me that the point of *Distracted Driver,* although well exhibited, has gone Largely Unnoticed!!
I see commentary on ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time), a couple folk getting on about motorcyclist’s eye-wear, a near inconsequential turn signal (a nice touch. Kudos, blunder though it may have been) mentioned, a duly noted lack of education for young drivers and as well for seasoned dawgs etc. Sadly, I see only very vague reference to the acknowledgement of Distracted Driver.
    *Destructive Criticism*
At point where Randy and Ian climb into the car, the burger and wrapper should have been there, still, just as they were when Ian got out of the car. The burger and wrapper should well have been the first bit of contention, and the message of *Distracted Driver* driven home with a sledge.
*Perhaps if you’d not been distracted eating that burger, you’d have had both time and inclination to take a Second Look!!*
    *Enjoy Peace*

Ian is old enough to drive, he should have had enough smarts to eat
the frigging burger in the parking lot of the fast food joint! It is a sad
fact but people don't put in the attention driving deserves and other
people are dying because of this.
