    This game is an excelent example to show begginers how important can the tempos and activity be. In normal chess, a single lost or wasted move can cause catastrophies.

    • @danielyuan9862
      @danielyuan9862 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not really. If a beginner plays as white here, they can intentionally make a first move that would be bad in regular chess but has a good follow-up in monster chess. Being able to move twice kinda overrides being up some tempi.

    I'm imagining a new variant where one player controls both the white and black pieces, while the other player controls a single red "deity" pawn that just so happens to be able to move anywhere and do anything it wants. The objective of the game for the player controlling black/white is to capture that pawn while the objective for the player controlling the red pawn is to hold your own long and make the other player resign through any means necessary.

Or if a white piece (that must have been gained via pawn promotion) moved through the vacant spot? The last one would be something like: …, g7g5, 12. Qh6b6 *_hxg6 e.p._* …

    I played a round of this with a friend. We got confused on a certain point. Can the super king take the other King on the second move if it’s defended by another piece? Whether or not that situation is check seems important and isn’t addressed by the rules here or on Wikipedia.

    • @enderspirit5238
      @enderspirit5238 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can see it this way: the first king captured loses, the state of the board after that is irrelevant, the very moment your king is out of the game, the game is over, even if your king was defended it doesn't matter since your king is already dead.

    • @MoldbugReads
      @MoldbugReads 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enderspirit5238 counter argument: taking the other King would be illegal, since you're never allowed to make a second move which ends with your King in check.
      Some folks seem to address this problem by saying that if you can ever put the black kind in check with your first move, you win. That seems to adequately solve the paradox.

    • @enderspirit5238
      @enderspirit5238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MoldbugReads I mean you could play by these rules but you're playing a different game.
      It's the same reason why in normal chess a pinned piece can still give check. Imagine a black knight pinned by a white bishop. If you moved your white king in range of the black knight, your king could be captured by the knight, even if you could immediately recapture the black king the next move with your bishop, it's already too late, the king is dead and the war has already been lost the moment your king was removed from the board.

    • @MoldbugReads
      @MoldbugReads 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enderspirit5238 That really doesn't make it a different game. It's just a workaround to a situation that seems paradoxical
      Why doesn't it change the game? The same exact results happen with that rule and how you say it works. If my first move checks the King, in your version, you'd take it with your second move. In that version, you just win after the first move. Same game.

    @TaismoFanBoy ปีที่แล้ว

    This variant feels easily solved. Black just pushes his two unstoppable edge pawns; the white king cannot stop both from promoting. With two queens and two (now able to move) rooks, checkmating the white king is unavoidable.
    Whereas if black does NOT do this (or doesn't do it fast enough), white's king is effectively an unstoppable monster. White's pawns are really there just for show; they're negligible in the actual game, because black should always play on the sides of the board, and the pawns are very easy to keep at bay or 1f1.

    Played with my mum and reached a situation where there was cause for debate. There were a fair few pieces left on the board for black (me) but only the white king. She managed to shuffle into a spot which would be checkmate by the white king. However this would take two moves, and the second would place the white king (now on E8) in check to my rook on A8. She argued that this is allowed because she takes my king, and therefore the game is won in white favour. My argument was that the king cannot put itself into check, even if to take the enemy king. Now that I think about it, I suppose she would be right in that in a normal game, black could not move a absolutely pinned piece to put the white king in check, as their king would be taken on the next turn. Anyone know if there’s an official answer to this?

    • @oguzhanyigit1326
      @oguzhanyigit1326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Imagine an endgame like this: White has a king on e5 and a bishop on b5. Black has a king on e8 and a pawn on d7. Pawn is absolutely pinned to the king by white bishop. It's white to move. Could you move your king to e6 (in check) because if the pawn moved it would cause the black king to be under check therefore dxe6 is not possible? Or Ke6 is impossible in the position because white loses their king BEFORE black loses their king? I do not know if it's official or not, that's just my logic, hope that makes sense.

    • @oenrn

    • @michaelsmart7445
      @michaelsmart7445 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      White can move into check, so long as their second move would bring them out of check. So the white king could move up one, but it can't then take black's pawn, because the black king would check the white king.
      As for OP's situation with their mother, I think the issue was, OP's king was in check when they ended their turn. Otherwise, there's no way OP's mom could have taken OP's king in two turns. So OP made an illegal move.

    Now thinking about it, in this variant, a white queen or rook could checkmate without assistance. Center of the enemy king, single piece threatens a file of each side, black king cannot escape.
