I really like how Team Rocket was handled this saga. They were consistently fun to watch for the first time since DP. On top of that, there was a greater focus on the personalities of their pokemon. Seeing them complete in the league was also pretty cool.
Although SM TRio is my favorite I’m glad you mentioned DP as well I feel like DP Team Rocket doesn’t get as much praise as they deserve, due to the fact that they were unfortunately in every episode which I do admit is a major flaw as it causes their amazing moments to get overshadowed by too many underwhelming moments
This is my favorite Team Rocket On a side note, as much as I love DP, I’ll admit that Team Rocket in that series didn’t do it for me. They had their funny moments and great focus episodes as well as a good role in Team Galactic, but them showing up in every episode felt more forced here than any other series imo(Although to be fair, I didn’t like Team Rocket as a group until BW)
I was a Sun and Moon hater too. I never gave it a chance, because of the art style. I watched it about a year ago, and ill say this. I teared up more during Sun and Moon then i have for any other series.
I saw an ugly toy from it and stayed away, then gave It a chance and then a little while later I find myself binging it, and trying everything to watch Ultra Legends, and when I finished, I cried, twice.
I absolutely agree with your message at the end Zac. Of course we have our preferences, what we like and dislike, but we shouldn’t judge a series for what it is not. We shouldn’t compare it to XYZ and that’s coming from someone who started off pokémon from the gen 6 games and anime. XYZ and SM are both wonderful in their own ways and us fans shouldn’t have to argue!

Watching the Sun and Moon anime felt like you were actually with Ash on vacation. The art style got very weird at times but I love how the game and anime deviated from the norm and both really worked. The characters are actually really fleshed out, especially Lillie and her family.
I came back in XYZ after not having watched the series regularly since AG, so SM's reveal was a real shock. And boy, the roasting it got from fans was particularly intense, and honestly? I didn't much care for it at first either. But I decided to give it a chance, and I don't regret it. It was a really fun series, had plenty of heartfelt and amazing moments (I legit cried when Ash won the League and after the battle with Kukui), and captured the fun and relaxed atmosphere of the Alola region perfectly. I really liked the cast too and how they were sort of an extended family for sh.
Reality Ensures: Ash had previously *left his Pokemon at Oak's laboratory* in Kanto, regardless of where they were originally from, without addressing if any non-Kantonian Pokemon felt like they missed their old home region. This is *not* the case however *for Rowlet, Lycanroc, Incineroar, and Melmetal in Alola.* While they did help Ash win the Alola League, Ash realizes they'd be homesick if he took them back to Kanto with him, and entrusts them with Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet: home in Alola, *and he remains firm to this decision when he revisits them in a later episode of Journeys.*

I think Sun and Moon was my favorite in the series because it truly captured what the Pokémon world was about beyond just constant battling. It was to enjoy a vibrant world with magical creatures and close friends. This was helped by all the companions having ample screentime and their Pokémon always being out of their pokeballs. For once, every Pokémon had a discernible personality and it showed.
I have been scrolling through these comments and I am surprised that many people still hate on this anime. I think half of these people have not even watched the entire series. I myself was not sure if this series was gonna be good at the starting. However as it went on I grew to love this season. I agree that the voice acting and animation style may be annoying and ash might act a little childish(This is a show for 7 year olds) but when you look past that you find out that Sun and Moon is much more than that. The plot is beautiful and deviates from the regular pattern of Pokemon. Honestly, I needed the change. The league is the best league arc. The whole story is beautiful and concentrates more about enjoying life with Pokemon and not always being power hungry. Ash learned this lesson is Kalos. He always wanted to get straight to to the battle and did not concentrate on what was most important. It was being one with Pokemon and enjoying life with them. PS- I don't know my favorite Pokemon season. Currently it is a tie between XY and Sun and moon. :). Please dont hate on my comment...this is just my honest opinion. Edit: Tysm for the likes! Imo sun and moon was mediocre at best the first 2 and 1/2 seasons besides the first 10 episodes of season 2, the league arc was very good and almost saved it but is second to sinnoh, we don’t get any full battles besides kukui which was an exhibition match
I got into Pokemon because my friend who sadly passed away from cancer gave me a 2DS and gave me a Sun and Moon game, I played it and enjoyed the game a lot. I decided to give the series a chance, and this was the first time I got into Pokemon. I loved the atmosphere of Alola and Ash's pokemon, and how free they are. I continued off of SM to Journeys and noticed a big difference in how they act and it felt off, but SM introduced that kind of laid back concept. I love SM series a lot, with great character arcs and everything. It's amazing, and I like it. We all have our preferences, and I like SM.
I personally really like the expressions in the Alola season: while I do understand why you say that they feel forced, I still find myself laughing at them, and one of this arc's highlights. ^^
This is easily my favorite Pokémon series. I feel this series is by far the best when it comes to paying off things that were built up like Littens past, Lillies story, and the final battle with Kukui and Ash winning the League. And since this series wasn’t building off of the previous Pokémon series formulas, it was able to relax and have fun with it. And that’s the number one thing I will call this series fun. And even then the series did an amazing job at balancing both fun and heart. This is probably the only Pokémon series to make me cry. And while not every character was able to shine as much as others, I still really love the dynamics and I’d argue that this group feels the most like family imo especially with the father son dynamic with Ash and Kukui that I really admired here. The series also did some really gutsy stuff I really loved like with Litten, Lillie, and Mallow

I can't wait to watch this after re-watching Diamond and Pearl. It's unique, does something different, characters are all diverse, colorful and likeable, the Alola League was great and finally gave Ash the win, Team Rocket is actually not annoying compared to other series andthe anime can get hilarious especially the facial expressions. I literally died from laughter due to how hilarious some of the facial expressions. Never thought it was bad right now and found them hilarious, as absurd and stupid as the facial expressions can get.
@@roach_lotus Team Rocket were actually enjoyable for once, especially because of how irritating they were in OS, AG, and DP appearing in like every single episode and just being plain stupid. Good thing they finally stopped appearing in every episode and only used them when needed in BW, XY, and SM.
Lillie was literally the Rogue of this series and it made me Happy when she could actually touch pokemon just like when Rogue was finally in control her powes😁🔥🔥
In a weird way, that analogy kind of works. Except it's less about gaining control over something and more about learning to come out of her shell more and (as was stated in the video) overcome her past trauma and be able to move forward with her life.
Alola is SO OVERHATED. I watched all of Kanto, Sinnoh, and Alola on the Pokemon website this spring during quarantine, and I might like Alola more than Kanto. The filler episodes in Alola didn't even feel like filler, and it really serves as a great intro to the Pokemon world, especially to people who have dreams other than Pokemon stuff. It felt a lot more relatable than other Pokemon seasons.

I cannot disagree with TSS more when he says the comedy and art style wasn't good in this series. It was the right kind of silly and felt fun. Honestly to me this is one of my favourite series and felt more relaxed and less stressful due to the slice of life nature it had. I love slive of life and casual comedy and the facial expressions in this series was THE BEST! They were over the top silly and when the art was weird it was hillarious! This series was wholesome and silly and just made me laugh and feel relaxed every time I saw an episode. Honestly this series is SUPER underrated.
Sun and moon is easily my favorite series: I love the themes and random humor, and the slice of life honestly works so much better for Pokémon than traveling style of the first 6 gens. Stuff like littens capture never coulda been pulled off in any other series

I also really like the fact that the pokemon in Sun and Moon are not only tools that come out in battle but they´re also characters with their own personalities, with arcs and relationships with their trainers and to other pokemon like Rowlet with toucannon, meltan and decidueye, pikachu with tapu koko and mimikyu, the friendship with team rocket and bewear and her stufful and even the ultrabeast with some of them being threats like Guzzlord, just relatively malicious like pheromosa or being good ultrabeast like kartana (which lacked common sense because he wanted to prove that he could cut anything but was portrayed to be honorable like a samurai and said goodbye to Ash/Satoshi), buzzwhole that just wanted to flex his strength and poipole that was there literally just to save his world and that was part of Ash/Satoshi´s team. All of this was also possible due to the fact that unlike other series, in Sun and Moon the pokemon are outside their pokeballs most of the time, compared to other series where they for the most part only come out when there´s a battle or a training episode for a specific pokemon. On a side note: I don´t think Mallow got a bad treatment in the ending. I think that she being able to properly say goodbye to all the people (and pokemon) that is important to her which ties to the fact that she didn´t get to have a proper goodbye with her mom at the time. I also want to point out the fact that Kartana´s noises actually have meaning. You just need to hear it backwards. It says something like "another useless object cut with my sword" or something like that.
Unfortunately it was way too cringy for me to enjoy. I'm not against fun mind you, but this series wasn't really funny. In fact, it made me realize why some people at my school hated Pokémon.
Im not an expert on rating Pokemon Series ,but I think of it like this (Spoilers also) Sun and Moon was for me a bit cringy at the start. Then you get to the end and it's good. Team rocket hideout was very cool ,and I loved the OP bewear. (This thing went ultra-instinct aganist an ultra beast and won) The end has a good team ,can't lie You have some unique choices like an ultra beast and mythical as well as a 1 of a kind lycanrock.
Personally I love the series,and you can't really get mad at the art style when literally every other series after it had the same style,and,you know,the pokemon are cuter,I'm just disappointed that it didn't have more battles,since they definitely were the best part of the show
SM was the series that got me into Pokemon. I did watch a few episodes of OG, BW and XY but I was never really invested in the story, but something about SM just got me hooked. I guess I was interested in Lillie's story and I enjoyed the slice of life setting. After Nebby was introduced I started to wait each day to watch the next episode. I didn't know anything about the games so it was all surprising and exciting for me. When the league started coming out in Japanese I was already caught up and it was so exciting to watch Ash actually win the league! 🎉
Still crying about the episode with Litten and Stoutland, plus that symbolism with the last leaf falling off of that tree scene and I immediately knew that Stoutland was gone and I immediately bawled my eyes out. ALSO EVEN MORE SO when Litten, now a Torracat, met Stoutland again in the fog and he wanted to show how powerful he's gotten - again, immediate tearsssss. As much as the animation and art style changed, I think it suited the series pretty well. The usual art style of sharp lines and edges wouldn't suit Alola, I think the softer look of Ash and everyone suited this series better. Idk about journeys tho -3-

Journeys wrapped up Lillie and her dads arc very well , and I loved the sun and moon anime at first I wasn’t happy they got away from the xyz style but when I gave sun and moon a chance I loved it and watched it every episode glad I did
A reason why the Alola League is my favorite league, one not covered in Zacs review, is because of the symbolism. The Alola League makes up for all of Ashes previous league losses all at once. 1.) Ash defeated Hau with his Rowlet after it fell asleep. This avenges his Indigo League loss when Charizard fell asleep against Richie’s Pikachu for refusing to battle it. 2.) Ash defeated a fire starter Pokémon (Kukuis Incineroar) with his own fire starter (Torracat) to avenge his loss in the Johto league when Charizard lost to Blaziken. 3.) Ash won his battle against Hau with Rowlet wearing clothing resembling Decidueye to avenge his loss in the Hoenn league after Tyson beat Ash with his Meowth wearing clothing. 4.) Ash defeated 2 legendaries (Gladion’s Sivally and Tapu Koko) AND had 2 legendaries of his own on his team (Melmetal and Naganedel, an ultra beast) to avenge his loss against Tobias’s Darkrai and Latios in the Sinnoh League. 5.) Ash defeated Kukui’s Lucario to avenge his loss to Cameron’s Lucario in the Unova league. 6.) Ash defeated his edge lord rival (Gladion) and not only survived, but absorbed, a BURASTO BAN to avenge his loss to Alain in the Kalos league. And to top it all off 7.) Ash surpasses his final hurdle and wins his final battle of the league, as a champion, with his starter Pokémon and longtime partner Pikachu instead of regional aces.
@@animetechnoblade1009 You mention your best way which was mostly bad in early series like sleeping is not a K.O anymore, legendary Pokémon can be use in league, and Ash defeated Tapu koko with help by the Z-move which Tapu koko allow him to use it, just felt a little easy. But there is more and i can’t explain everything.
Just for the series to go how far it did with the Kukui and Burnett relationship is remarkable, considering the closest the show had gone before for serious relationships was a cut away kiss Serena gave Ash (and that was a very big moment for the anime in itself). Coming out of the lighter in tone of the SM anime it’s more meaningful.

I was a little concerned about the "Sun & Moon" series at first, but it eventually became my 3rd favorite Pokemon anime series, and it always will be. Happy New Year, Lumiose Trainer Zac!!!
I'm so glad I gave this series a second chance because there was so many good moments of this series. A lot of people (myself included) didn't like the sudden shift in artstyle coming from the most anime-like of the series in XY but the battles of this series is still freaking top notch. Ash may seem a lot more "goofy" but his badass battle prowess from XY is still there and, of course, he finally wins a league. And this series did a good job in tackling personal issues when it needs to such as death and acceptance. This series hits a lot of high points and probably the only lows I can say about it is that balancing that many characters at once can be tedious at times.
I hated sun and moon when I first heard of it but whenever I came back to pokemon since 2015, I came back last month and I have just feel in love with sun and moon as my all time favorite.
So we finally made it. The last series review just in time for the end of the year. Overall, this series slammed. It was nice to see a fair stance on each series detailing the good and the bad parts of each. Plus it was great seeing the anipoke community come over and collab. I had a lot of fun these last few weeks watching these reviews. Great job and Happy New Year.
Like most I was a bit perplexed but you warm up quite quickly to Alolas charms. The fluid animation, on point humour and heartwarming characters and stories makes this the definitive pokemon series.

I completely understand if ppl just dnt like it because of personal taste....its like me with BW....I personally dont like the series but I respect it....There are certain moments(Elisa Gym Battle) that I absolutely hate but in general I always try to respect its great moments....HOWEVER many SM haters dont even make an effort to watch the anime or hate on it more than it deserves for things like art style or humor....as Zac said when start seeing the good in things rather than looking at the bad we can truly understand and respect everything :)(btw i love sm)

I loved the breakdown of the series! Something key that was looked over was the arch with Misty and Brock coming for a few episodes, this series even had continuity to previous friendships Ash had prior to his time in Alola. They really blended Misty and Brock to the cast of SM seamlessly.
Since you'll need a new thing after the anime reviews, Zac, maybe you could do thoughts/reviews on the Pokemon Adventures Manga. You reference it a lot and I personally am a fan. Plus, with your popularity, it would help some people get into it. Just a suggestion though
I think the art style was great it gave ash so much emotion and movement. The art style also really help for the tone of the anime where their was not much battles and more character based. As for the stick figure well you where not supposed to be zoomed in and paused in the first placed.

@@MPW2012 I would almost agree but there's just one tiny issue. It makes pokemon region exploration in the past look like a joke. What's that it originally presumably took Ash weeks, maybe even months for him to get from Pallet Town to Vermilion. Well now thanks to advancements in technology Ash can commute through the use of trains and buses in 6-8 hours. Don't get me wrong its not a bad concept it just makes the Pokemon journey of walking everywhere seem kind of silly. Especially since Ash still won the Alolan league despite staying put at Kukuis house on Melemele island. Ash and Goh can seemingly get anywhere in the world in the span of no longer than a day. Even the more secluded areas.
I will never be able to understand why people despise the expressive art style of Sun and Moon. I fucking love the expressions, reactions, and the bouncy and stretch animation of this series. To me, it's like XYZ was an UFOTable anime compared to a Trigger anime. One is consistently pretty and polished in its art style, while the other is more fluid and expressive in its animation.
Personally just not a fan of the artstyle, feels too flat and cheap. Generally I'm not a fan of the anime artstyle nor the flat and simpler looking artstyle that some newer cartoons are adopting. Sun and Moon is like a combination of both of them so I really don't like it. You can have characters be expressive and have fluid animation with a more detailed and refined artstyle. Of course this does come down to personal taste, and I don't think it's bad at all. It's just something that I know that I don't like.
Pokémon Sun and Moon was definitely one of the best series. What I love most about this series is the Ash’s Rowlet, Rotom Pokédex ,Jessie’s Mimikyu, Bewear, the comedy, character developments, battle animations and most of all the Ash winning the Alola League and finally becoming a true champion! 😁
I feel like there are some things missing, like how Suiren is basically the badass of the group with being a jack of all trades and very competetive outside of Pokemon battles. Anyway, the change they made to the Aether-foundation arc was my favorite thing. Lusamine in the games was just a monster that I actually really wished would have found her end when you defeat her, which is NOT what I should be feeling towards anyone in a Pokemon game. So when the anime changed the antagonist from "Psycho mother" to "too ambigious scientist" I was very happy. Pushing the villain role from Lusamine over to Faba just works better as an entire evil Aetherfoundation was just not believable to begin with. Faba also made for a good villain as he really is not evil but was just too ambigious to care for safety and then just wiped away the evidence of his mistakes. It humanizes him instead of just giving us a bad guy to dislike, which overall is more in line with Pokemon villains. I feel similar about Team Skull being a gang of misfits and angsty teens rather than being a American style gang that literally took over and walled off a city! They were, fittingly to the theme of Alola, a family that had each other while they rejected the other people of Alola.
@Shivering Timber most likely yes because after ash said take care, it look like Lillie wanted to confess her love to ash but Gladion interrupted her . and not only that, but I think that ash also likes Lillie because for one, both ash and Lillie has spent with each other the most in sun and moon, ash also help Lillie overcome her fears of pokemon, and that one episode were ash and rotom dex argue, after school, ash and Lillie talked to each other and after they talk, both of them blushed at each other. so yea

Maybe what should've happened is that when Ash enrolled at the school, he and Lillie are the only students in Professor Kukui's class. Then have a 4 to 5 part arc of Ash and Lillie finding other students. Maybe that way the pacing of Ash properly befriending Lana, Mallow, Kiawe, and Sophocles would feel more natural. Maybe during this arc that's how Lillie will meet Snowy and touch other Pokemon, and more glimpses of her backstory.
Motherbeast Lusamine in the anime will always be a treat in my eyes because in the way Lusamine speaks in that state (Especially in the English Dub) Its left just vague enough that it might not be Lusamine who's actually talking, but the Nihilego. Doubly so if you think that the ultra beast that abducts her is the same one that tried to do the same to Lillie years before. Give it a listen again and put it in this context and Motherbeast Lusamine is a lot more creepier then the game's version

But that's also why this review series is so great, in my opinion: it's always a good idea to look at both the pros and cons of anything when making a judgment about it, which is something that some people seem to forget about. Just take the sword and shield games, for example: if you look for reviews on TH-cam, you'll mostly find negative reviews about it that go on and on about the games' flaws and how bad it makes them rather than trying to look at the things that they did right as well. It's one thing to either complain and nitpick about a certain things' flaws, or alternatively, praise what something has done right, but a good review should focus on both sides rather than just one in isolation so that people can see both sides and judge for themselves rather it's good or bad to them.
@@mattiasolsson1523 Yeah, I love Sun and Moon, but I acknowledge it's flaws. One of the biggest things I disliked was how they chose to debut the three fully evolved Alola Starters. They could've used any other two Pokémon as fodder in that episode, but nope. Just show Decidueye and Primarina, along with a Machamp barely doing anything to Incineroar with their attacks and all getting one shot. Really not being subtle with the bias towards Incineroar. That right there is like they're trying to say he's better than the other two, which is insulting, since I love Primarina the most and never really liked Incineroar that much. That scene is a contributing factor as to why I despise him so much to this day. Aside from having an ugly design that doesn't make sense as an evolution of Litten and Torracat, as well as having the dumbest looking signature move ever and awkwardly pelvic thrusting to use certain Fire moves. I also found Bewear kind of annoying.
I thought ultra guardians was extremely unique for the anime and different I thought the execution was wholesome and hilarious and whimsical and silly TSS your soul needs whimsy desperately you are too cynical It was beautiful and laid back
I find half of them great and half of them meh, like I love Buzzwole, Pheromosa, paradise resort and blacephalon Episodes or when Ash got shrink but there is some meh Episodes like Alolan Golem, kartana and stakataka
Just recently watched it, didn't really have any particularly strong feelings about it but holy shit was it such a entertaining watch (binged in 3 days). The art style really grew on me and each and every character was such a pleasant surprise with some coming with great backstories.
I think it was clear to me Lillie wanted to become some sort of researcher indicated by her assisting Mallow with her recipes and her decent knowledge of pokemon in general. Her voice in the dub though is like nails on a chalkboard sometimes.
I'm not a fan of everything about the sun and moon artstyle but it definitely gets wayy too much hate. The battles still look amazing and the anime definitely has it's moments. I was surprised how many heartfelt sad moments the anime had too, very refreshing change. Kinda weird that non of the matches in the sun and moon pokemon League were 6v6 b4 he fought kuki. Regardless though I love this series, the first season was kinda slow but after that man it just keeps getting better :D
Tbf I don't understand the argument about lower quality of people in the background. It was just it's artstyle, focusing on the main thing - smooth animations. And for the over the top faces, they didn't annoy me not so much. It was so refreshing after watching all other series, where they had mainly the same faces or when they used the same shocked O_O face etc. And filler being filler, but they were much more interesting than e.g. XY. It's also worth mentioning, but SM had the least amount of CotDs (Character of the Day), because many of them returned in later episodes. So fillers didn't feel the same.
Its can be long way character blury and also made it on purpose just like Meowth looks like it was draw by a 5 year old. I can understand that but also made me feel so uncomfortable.

Not gonna lie. Wasn’t a fan after watching the 1st season. Then I watched season 2 and it changed everything. Now sun and moon is one of my favorite anime
I honestly can't remember most of season one except for the episode where Stoutland dies and Ash catches Litten, Olivia's trial followed by Rockruff evolving, Lillie being able to touch Snowy and Pikachu and Gladions introduction. The rest is kind of a blur.
I think the series is great, it may not be the same as X&Y but to stand out it pretty much had to try something different, because trying to beat X&Y at its own game is like trying to out sleep a Snorlax. For what it is, Sun and Moon was great, and it’s nice to have a good change of pace in this +20 year old series. Great video as always man
Although I haven't seen the "Sun and Moon" series in its entirety, here are my thoughts on what I have seen of it: It definitely struck a more emotional and developmental chord than "X and Y", with each character having their own personal struggles to overcome. I definitely enjoyed the character interactions a lot more. They felt deeper than just "You're strong, let's be rivals." Where "X and Y" felt like a love letter to the older fans, "Sun and Moon" felt like a love letter to the characters and region itself. Ash going to school threw me for a loop, as Pokemon (for me) was about going off on an adventure and exploring, discovering, and experiencing things with friends. Initially, it felt as though there was a lot of adult supervision and hand-holding, but with themes of family and reconciliation, I guess that's to be expected. I also wasn't too thrilled with the lack of an established villain. I know Faba filled that role, but his punishment (instead of jail time or "death") was his being demoted. His "I was wrong; please forgive me, I'm a good guy now" felt a bit rushed to me. If there was more time taken for him to become a better person, then I would be okay with it. but after Faba, I don't recall another villain (correct me if I'm wrong). But, then again, the lack of a villain seeking and having control over a super powerful pokemon was kind of refreshing; I guess that allowed for more of a focus on the cast and their pokemon, as well as the introduction of the ultra beasts. I wished Guzma showed up earlier in the anime rather than nearing the league arc, but I guess giving the show a watch would change my mind. One more thing (of which I may get a lot of flack for): I actually wasn't too pleased with this league win. The battles themselves were great, and Ash going up against Kukui as well as Tapu Koko was a real testament to his skill as a trainer. But, for me, it felt as though the writers WOULD have Ash win this league. Since Alola didn't have an established champion, they WOULD have Ash win this one, as opposed to battling a seasoned and life-long champ. But, that's just me. Again, I would have to watch all of it to give it a fair go - it looks promising! - but I would rather see Ash go head to head with an established champion and have a hairsbreadth of a win or loss because they are so close in skill, instead of becoming the first-ever champ in a league without one. How about you guys?
Bro Kukui is a seasoned trainer and was like Champion of Alola whom everyone see a idol figure, he was as powerful as E4 even in games, with Tapu Koko joining his team I can't see Diantha or Alder more powerful than Kukui+Tapu Koko, that Tapu Koko had history of fighting many powerful opponents, protecting Alola region for many centuries and has one of the most powerful z move in Pokemon universe. And becoming first ever Champion and beating a GOD of that region make Ash a legend, this is something most other Champions can only dream about.

@@authoreyes101 You have to keep in mind that Kukui has an edge against Ash that no other elite 4 member/Champion has. Kukui knew Ashs entire team since he had been living with him the whole time and while sure Ash had a mythical and legendary that he didn't know much about, he was fully aware of what Pikachu, Rowlet, Lycanroc, and Torracat were capable of. Other elite trainers would be too busy to keep an eye on everything Ash is doing.
@@joelss22 Yeah, that makes sense, but Kukui still lost despite that edge. Again, I'm not saying that the battle between the two wasn't good; it was a great final battle. But I guess my gripe with it is that, despite how strong Ash has been shown to be, the writers had him win the one league without an established champ. All the other times that Ash has gone up against a champ (however short the battle was) he's lost against them. And the writers (for some reason 😧) always seem to take the win away from Ash because... reasons, I guess? (Tobias, Cameron, Alain - I'm looking at you 😑). I just don't understand why the writers don't want to risk their main character beating a champ. In all fairness (since I haven't seen all of S+M), if Kukui/The Masked Royal was referred to as "the guy to beat" or "the best trainer in all of Alola", then I would be okay with it since that means that Ash beat the best trainer in all of Alola (essentially, a champion). Ash's team looks pretty promising in Journeys too, but I doubt they would have him win against Leon, Galar's established and "unbeatable" champion (it would be a huge shock if he did). I just want to see this kid win a league and defeat the champion of said league 😥.

I really like how Team Rocket was handled this saga. They were consistently fun to watch for the first time since DP. On top of that, there was a greater focus on the personalities of their pokemon. Seeing them complete in the league was also pretty cool.
To me, this was really the most fun and enjoyable they've ever been.
Although SM TRio is my favorite I’m glad you mentioned DP as well I feel like DP Team Rocket doesn’t get as much praise as they deserve, due to the fact that they were unfortunately in every episode which I do admit is a major flaw as it causes their amazing moments to get overshadowed by too many underwhelming moments

On a side note, as much as I love DP, I’ll admit that Team Rocket in that series didn’t do it for me. They had their funny moments and great focus episodes as well as a good role in Team Galactic, but them showing up in every episode felt more forced here than any other series imo(Although to be fair, I didn’t like Team Rocket as a group until BW)

I was a Sun and Moon hater too. I never gave it a chance, because of the art style. I watched it about a year ago, and ill say this. I teared up more during Sun and Moon then i have for any other series.

I saw an ugly toy from it and stayed away, then gave It a chance and then a little while later I find myself binging it, and trying everything to watch Ultra Legends, and when I finished, I cried, twice.
The fact that this isn't a travel series made it so the side characters showing up during the league feels more impactful.

I absolutely agree with your message at the end Zac. Of course we have our preferences, what we like and dislike, but we shouldn’t judge a series for what it is not. We shouldn’t compare it to XYZ and that’s coming from someone who started off pokémon from the gen 6 games and anime. Watching the Sun and Moon anime felt like you were actually with Ash on vacation. The art style got very weird at times but I love how the game and anime deviated from the norm and both really worked. The characters are actually really fleshed out, especially Lillie and her family.

I came back in XYZ after not having watched the series regularly since AG, so SM's reveal was a real shock. And boy, the roasting it got from fans was particularly intense, and honestly? I didn't much care for it at first either. But I decided to give it a chance, and I don't regret it. It was a really fun series, had plenty of heartfelt and amazing moments (I legit cried when Ash won the League and after the battle with Kukui), and captured the fun and relaxed atmosphere of the Alola region perfectly. I really liked the cast too and how they were sort of an extended family for sh.

I think Sun and Moon was my favorite in the series because it truly captured what the Pokémon world was about beyond just constant battling. It was to enjoy a vibrant world with magical creatures and close friends. This was helped by all the companions having ample screentime and their Pokémon always being out of their pokeballs. For once, every Pokémon had a discernible personality and it showed.
I have been scrolling through these comments and I am surprised that many people still hate on this anime. I think half of these people have not even watched the entire series. I myself was not sure if this series was gonna be good at the starting. However as it went on I grew to love this season. I agree that the voice acting and animation style may be annoying and ash might act a little childish(This is a show for 7 year olds) but when you look past that you find out that Sun and Moon is much more than that. The plot is beautiful and deviates from the regular pattern of Pokemon. Honestly, I needed the change. The league is the best league arc. The whole story is beautiful and concentrates more about enjoying life with Pokemon and not always being power hungry. Ash learned this lesson is Kalos. He always wanted to get straight to to the battle and did not concentrate on what was most important. It was being one with Pokemon and enjoying life with them.
PS- I don't know my favorite Pokemon season. Currently it is a tie between XY and Sun and moon. :). Please dont hate on my comment...this is just my honest opinion.

I got into Pokemon because my friend who sadly passed away from cancer gave me a 2DS and gave me a Sun and Moon game, I played it and enjoyed the game a lot. I decided to give the series a chance, and this was the first time I got into Pokemon. I loved the atmosphere of Alola and Ash's pokemon, and how free they are. I continued off of SM to Journeys and noticed a big difference in how they act and it felt off, but SM introduced that kind of laid back concept. I love SM series a lot, with great character arcs and everything. It's amazing, and I like it. We all have our preferences, and I like SM.

I personally really like the expressions in the Alola season: while I do understand why you say that they feel forced, I still find myself laughing at them, and one of this arc's highlights. ^^
Even thinking about some of the moments such as Litten losing stoutland and Mallow’s mum make me emotional. Sm is just so fantastic.
This is easily my favorite Pokémon series. I feel this series is by far the best when it comes to paying off things that were built up like Littens past, Lillies story, and the final battle with Kukui and Ash winning the League. And since this series wasn’t building off of the previous Pokémon series formulas, it was able to relax and have fun with it. And that’s the number one thing I will call this series fun. And even then the series did an amazing job at balancing both fun and heart. This is probably the only Pokémon series to make me cry. And while not every character was able to shine as much as others, I still really love the dynamics and I’d argue that this group feels the most like family imo especially with the father son dynamic with Ash and Kukui that I really admired here. The series also did some really gutsy stuff I really loved like with Litten, Lillie, and Mallow

I can't wait to watch this after re-watching Diamond and Pearl. It's unique, does something different, characters are all diverse, colorful and likeable, the Alola League was great and finally gave Ash the win, Team Rocket is actually not annoying compared to other series andthe anime can get hilarious especially the facial expressions. I literally died from laughter due to how hilarious some of the facial expressions. Never thought it was bad right now and found them hilarious, as absurd and stupid as the facial expressions can get.
SM wasn’t my favorite series. But I still appreciate it for what it did have that I really liked about it.

In a weird way, that analogy kind of works. Except it's less about gaining control over something and more about learning to come out of her shell more and (as was stated in the video) overcome her past trauma and be able to move forward with her life.

Alola is SO OVERHATED. I watched all of Kanto, Sinnoh, and Alola on the Pokemon website this spring during quarantine, and I might like Alola more than Kanto. The filler episodes in Alola didn't even feel like filler, and it really serves as a great intro to the Pokemon world, especially to people who have dreams other than Pokemon stuff. It felt a lot more relatable than other Pokemon seasons.

I cannot disagree with TSS more when he says the comedy and art style wasn't good in this series. It was the right kind of silly and felt fun. Honestly to me this is one of my favourite series and felt more relaxed and less stressful due to the slice of life nature it had. I love slive of life and casual comedy and the facial expressions in this series was THE BEST! They were over the top silly and when the art was weird it was hillarious! This series was wholesome and silly and just made me laugh and feel relaxed every time I saw an episode. Honestly this series is SUPER underrated.

I also really like the fact that the pokemon in Sun and Moon are not only tools that come out in battle but they´re also characters with their own personalities, with arcs and relationships with their trainers and to other pokemon like Rowlet with toucannon, meltan and decidueye, pikachu with tapu koko and mimikyu, the friendship with team rocket and bewear and her stufful and even the ultrabeast with some of them being threats like Guzzlord, just relatively malicious like pheromosa or being good ultrabeast like kartana (which lacked common sense because he wanted to prove that he could cut anything but was portrayed to be honorable like a samurai and said goodbye to Ash/Satoshi), buzzwhole that just wanted to flex his strength and poipole that was there literally just to save his world and that was part of Ash/Satoshi´s team. All of this was also possible due to the fact that unlike other series, in Sun and Moon the pokemon are outside their pokeballs most of the time, compared to other series where they for the most part only come out when there´s a battle or a training episode for a specific pokemon.
On a side note: I don´t think Mallow got a bad treatment in the ending. I think that she being able to properly say goodbye to all the people (and pokemon) that is important to her which ties to the fact that she didn´t get to have a proper goodbye with her mom at the time.
I also want to point out the fact that Kartana´s noises actually have meaning. You just need to hear it backwards. It says something like "another useless object cut with my sword" or something like that.

SM was the series that got me into Pokemon. I did watch a few episodes of OG, BW and XY but I was never really invested in the story, but something about SM just got me hooked.
I guess I was interested in Lillie's story and I enjoyed the slice of life setting. After Nebby was introduced I started to wait each day to watch the next episode. I didn't know anything about the games so it was all surprising and exciting for me.
When the league started coming out in Japanese I was already caught up and it was so exciting to watch Ash actually win the league! 🎉

Still crying about the episode with Litten and Stoutland, plus that symbolism with the last leaf falling off of that tree scene and I immediately knew that Stoutland was gone and I immediately bawled my eyes out. ALSO EVEN MORE SO when Litten, now a Torracat, met Stoutland again in the fog and he wanted to show how powerful he's gotten - again, immediate tearsssss.
As much as the animation and art style changed, I think it suited the series pretty well. The usual art style of sharp lines and edges wouldn't suit Alola, I think the softer look of Ash and everyone suited this series better. Idk about journeys tho -3-

Journeys wrapped up Lillie and her dads arc very well , and I loved the sun and moon anime at first I wasn’t happy they got away from the xyz style but when I gave sun and moon a chance I loved it and watched it every episode glad I did

A reason why the Alola League is my favorite league, one not covered in Zacs review, is because of the symbolism. The Alola League makes up for all of Ashes previous league losses all at once.
1.) Ash defeated Hau with his Rowlet after it fell asleep. This avenges his Indigo League loss when Charizard fell asleep against Richie’s Pikachu for refusing to battle it.
2.) Ash defeated a fire starter Pokémon (Kukuis Incineroar) with his own fire starter (Torracat) to avenge his loss in the Johto league when Charizard lost to Blaziken.
3.) Ash won his battle against Hau with Rowlet wearing clothing resembling Decidueye to avenge his loss in the Hoenn league after Tyson beat Ash with his Meowth wearing clothing.
4.) Ash defeated 2 legendaries (Gladion’s Sivally and Tapu Koko) AND had 2 legendaries of his own on his team (Melmetal and Naganedel, an ultra beast) to avenge his loss against Tobias’s Darkrai and Latios in the Sinnoh League.
5.) Ash defeated Kukui’s Lucario to avenge his loss to Cameron’s Lucario in the Unova league.
6.) Ash defeated his edge lord rival (Gladion) and not only survived, but absorbed, a BURASTO BAN to avenge his loss to Alain in the Kalos league.
And to top it all off
7.) Ash surpasses his final hurdle and wins his final battle of the league, as a champion, with his starter Pokémon and longtime partner Pikachu instead of regional aces.

You mention your best way which was mostly bad in early series like sleeping is not a K.O anymore, legendary Pokémon can be use in league, and Ash defeated Tapu koko with help by the Z-move which Tapu koko allow him to use it, just felt a little easy. Just for the series to go how far it did with the Kukui and Burnett relationship is remarkable, considering the closest the show had gone before for serious relationships was a cut away kiss Serena gave Ash (and that was a very big moment for the anime in itself). Coming out of the lighter in tone of the SM anime it’s more meaningful.

I was a little concerned about the "Sun & Moon" series at first, but it eventually became my 3rd favorite Pokemon anime series, and it always will be. Happy New Year, Lumiose Trainer Zac!!!

I'm so glad I gave this series a second chance because there was so many good moments of this series. A lot of people (myself included) didn't like the sudden shift in artstyle coming from the most anime-like of the series in XY but the battles of this series is still freaking top notch. Ash may seem a lot more "goofy" but his badass battle prowess from XY is still there and, of course, he finally wins a league. And this series did a good job in tackling personal issues when it needs to such as death and acceptance. This series hits a lot of high points and probably the only lows I can say about it is that balancing that many characters at once can be tedious at times.
I hated sun and moon when I first heard of it but whenever I came back to pokemon since 2015, I came back last month and I have just feel in love with sun and moon as my all time favorite.
everyone hates the animation style, but I actually think it's cool! It fits the way more humorous style of SM which I also absolutely love!

So we finally made it. The last series review just in time for the end of the year. Overall, this series slammed. It was nice to see a fair stance on each series detailing the good and the bad parts of each. Plus it was great seeing the anipoke community come over and collab. Like most I was a bit perplexed but you warm up quite quickly to Alolas charms. The fluid animation, on point humour and heartwarming characters and stories makes this the definitive pokemon series.
Sun and moon was the series I liked more from all others.

I completely understand if ppl just dnt like it because of personal taste....its like me with BW....I personally dont like the series but I respect it....There are certain moments(Elisa Gym Battle) that I absolutely hate but in general I always try to respect its great moments....HOWEVER many SM haters dont even make an effort to watch the anime or hate on it more than it deserves for things like art style or humor....as Zac said when start seeing the good in things rather than looking at the bad we can truly understand and respect everything :)(btw i love sm)

I loved the breakdown of the series! Something key that was looked over was the arch with Misty and Brock coming for a few episodes, this series even had continuity to previous friendships Ash had prior to his time in Alola. They really blended Misty and Brock to the cast of SM seamlessly.
Since you'll need a new thing after the anime reviews, Zac, maybe you could do thoughts/reviews on the Pokemon Adventures Manga. You reference it a lot and I personally am a fan. Plus, with your popularity, it would help some people get into it. Just a suggestion though

The Pokemon games made me love Lillie, but looking back at her anime counterpart makes me happy as well
I think the art style was great it gave ash so much emotion and movement. The art style also really help for the tone of the anime where their was not much battles and more character based. As for the stick figure well you where not supposed to be zoomed in and paused in the first placed.

@@MPW2012 I would almost agree but there's just one tiny issue. It makes pokemon region exploration in the past look like a joke. What's that it originally presumably took Ash weeks, maybe even months for him to get from Pallet Town to Vermilion. Well now thanks to advancements in technology Ash can commute through the use of trains and buses in 6-8 hours. Don't get me wrong its not a bad concept it just makes the Pokemon journey of walking everywhere seem kind of silly. Especially since Ash still won the Alolan league despite staying put at Kukuis house on Melemele island. Ash and Goh can seemingly get anywhere in the world in the span of no longer than a day. Even the more secluded areas.

I will never be able to understand why people despise the expressive art style of Sun and Moon. I fucking love the expressions, reactions, and the bouncy and stretch animation of this series.
To me, it's like XYZ was an UFOTable anime compared to a Trigger anime. One is consistently pretty and polished in its art style, while the other is more fluid and expressive in its animation.
Personally just not a fan of the artstyle, feels too flat and cheap. Generally I'm not a fan of the anime artstyle nor the flat and simpler looking artstyle that some newer cartoons are adopting. Sun and Moon is like a combination of both of them so I really don't like it.
You can have characters be expressive and have fluid animation with a more detailed and refined artstyle.
Of course this does come down to personal taste, and I don't think it's bad at all. It's just something that I know that I don't like.

Pokémon Sun and Moon was definitely one of the best series. What I love most about this series is the Ash’s Rowlet, Rotom Pokédex ,Jessie’s Mimikyu, Bewear, the comedy, character developments, battle animations and most of all the Ash winning the Alola League and finally becoming a true champion! 😁
I feel like there are some things missing, like how Suiren is basically the badass of the group with being a jack of all trades and very competetive outside of Pokemon battles.
Anyway, the change they made to the Aether-foundation arc was my favorite thing.
Lusamine in the games was just a monster that I actually really wished would have found her end when you defeat her, which is NOT what I should be feeling towards anyone in a Pokemon game.
So when the anime changed the antagonist from "Psycho mother" to "too ambigious scientist" I was very happy.
Pushing the villain role from Lusamine over to Faba just works better as an entire evil Aetherfoundation was just not believable to begin with. Faba also made for a good villain as he really is not evil but was just too ambigious to care for safety and then just wiped away the evidence of his mistakes.
It humanizes him instead of just giving us a bad guy to dislike, which overall is more in line with Pokemon villains.
I feel similar about Team Skull being a gang of misfits and angsty teens rather than being a American style gang that literally took over and walled off a city!
They were, fittingly to the theme of Alola, a family that had each other while they rejected the other people of Alola.
If all the missing opportunities were fulfilled I'm sure SM would take 5 seasons. And a 1hr 30min+ review.

Maybe what should've happened is that when Ash enrolled at the school, he and Lillie are the only students in Professor Kukui's class. Then have a 4 to 5 part arc of Ash and Lillie finding other students. Maybe that way the pacing of Ash properly befriending Lana, Mallow, Kiawe, and Sophocles would feel more natural. Maybe during this arc that's how Lillie will meet Snowy and touch other Pokemon, and more glimpses of her backstory.

Motherbeast Lusamine in the anime will always be a treat in my eyes because in the way Lusamine speaks in that state (Especially in the English Dub) Its left just vague enough that it might not be Lusamine who's actually talking, but the Nihilego. Doubly so if you think that the ultra beast that abducts her is the same one that tried to do the same to Lillie years before. Give it a listen again and put it in this context and Motherbeast Lusamine is a lot more creepier then the game's version

But that's also why this review series is so great, in my opinion: it's always a good idea to look at both the pros and cons of anything when making a judgment about it, which is something that some people seem to forget about. Just take the sword and shield games, for example: if you look for reviews on TH-cam, you'll mostly find negative reviews about it that go on and on about the games' flaws and how bad it makes them rather than trying to look at the things that they did right as well. It's one thing to either complain and nitpick about a certain things' flaws, or alternatively, praise what something has done right, but a good review should focus on both sides rather than just one in isolation so that people can see both sides and judge for themselves rather it's good or bad to them.

@@mattiasolsson1523 Yeah, I love Sun and Moon, but I acknowledge it's flaws. One of the biggest things I disliked was how they chose to debut the three fully evolved Alola Starters. They could've used any other two Pokémon as fodder in that episode, but nope. Just show Decidueye and Primarina, along with a Machamp barely doing anything to Incineroar with their attacks and all getting one shot. Really not being subtle with the bias towards Incineroar. That right there is like they're trying to say he's better than the other two, which is insulting, since I love Primarina the most and never really liked Incineroar that much. That scene is a contributing factor as to why I despise him so much to this day. Aside from having an ugly design that doesn't make sense as an evolution of Litten and Torracat, as well as having the dumbest looking signature move ever and awkwardly pelvic thrusting to use certain Fire moves. I also found Bewear kind of annoying.

Just recently watched it, didn't really have any particularly strong feelings about it but holy shit was it such a entertaining watch (binged in 3 days). The art style really grew on me and each and every character was such a pleasant surprise with some coming with great backstories.
I think it was clear to me Lillie wanted to become some sort of researcher indicated by her assisting Mallow with her recipes and her decent knowledge of pokemon in general. Her voice in the dub though is like nails on a chalkboard sometimes.
A fitting video to end 2020. The series that literally made me pretty emotional. Love this series with all my heart.
Could have talked more of kukui, or a whole segment to himself... No misty, brock or that kanto trip too...

I'm not a fan of everything about the sun and moon artstyle but it definitely gets wayy too much hate. The battles still look amazing and the anime definitely has it's moments. I was surprised how many heartfelt sad moments the anime had too, very refreshing change. Kinda weird that non of the matches in the sun and moon pokemon League were 6v6 b4 he fought kuki. Regardless though I love this series, the first season was kinda slow but after that man it just keeps getting better :D
You guys missed the companion reunion...God Brock-o and Misty deserved a screentime after so long
The sun and moon anime is probably my favorite of the series. And watching your review still reminds me of that.
Tbf I don't understand the argument about lower quality of people in the background. It was just it's artstyle, focusing on the main thing - smooth animations. And for the over the top faces, they didn't annoy me not so much. It was so refreshing after watching all other series, where they had mainly the same faces or when they used the same shocked O_O face etc.
And filler being filler, but they were much more interesting than e.g. XY.
It's also worth mentioning, but SM had the least amount of CotDs (Character of the Day), because many of them returned in later episodes. So fillers didn't feel the same.
Its can be long way character blury and also made it on purpose just like Meowth looks like it was draw by a 5 year old. I can understand that but also made me feel so uncomfortable.

I honestly can't remember most of season one except for the episode where Stoutland dies and Ash catches Litten, Olivia's trial followed by Rockruff evolving, Lillie being able to touch Snowy and Pikachu and Gladions introduction. The rest is kind of a blur.

I think the series is great, it may not be the same as X&Y but to stand out it pretty much had to try something different, because trying to beat X&Y at its own game is like trying to out sleep a Snorlax. Although I haven't seen the "Sun and Moon" series in its entirety, here are my thoughts on what I have seen of it:
It definitely struck a more emotional and developmental chord than "X and Y", with each character having their own personal struggles to overcome. I definitely enjoyed the character interactions a lot more. They felt deeper than just "You're strong, let's be rivals." Where "X and Y" felt like a love letter to the older fans, "Sun and Moon" felt like a love letter to the characters and region itself.
Ash going to school threw me for a loop, as Pokemon (for me) was about going off on an adventure and exploring, discovering, and experiencing things with friends. Initially, it felt as though there was a lot of adult supervision and hand-holding, but with themes of family and reconciliation, I guess that's to be expected.
I also wasn't too thrilled with the lack of an established villain. I know Faba filled that role, but his punishment (instead of jail time or "death") was his being demoted. His "I was wrong; please forgive me, I'm a good guy now" felt a bit rushed to me. If there was more time taken for him to become a better person, then I would be okay with it. but after Faba, I don't recall another villain (correct me if I'm wrong). But, then again, the lack of a villain seeking and having control over a super powerful pokemon was kind of refreshing; I guess that allowed for more of a focus on the cast and their pokemon, as well as the introduction of the ultra beasts.
I wished Guzma showed up earlier in the anime rather than nearing the league arc, but I guess giving the show a watch would change my mind.
One more thing (of which I may get a lot of flack for): I actually wasn't too pleased with this league win. The battles themselves were great, and Ash going up against Kukui as well as Tapu Koko was a real testament to his skill as a trainer. But, for me, it felt as though the writers WOULD have Ash win this league. Since Alola didn't have an established champion, they WOULD have Ash win this one, as opposed to battling a seasoned and life-long champ. But, that's just me. Again, I would have to watch all of it to give it a fair go - it looks promising! - but I would rather see Ash go head to head with an established champion and have a hairsbreadth of a win or loss because they are so close in skill, instead of becoming the first-ever champ in a league without one.

Bro Kukui is a seasoned trainer and was like Champion of Alola whom everyone see a idol figure, he was as powerful as E4 even in games, with Tapu Koko joining his team I can't see Diantha or Alder more powerful than Kukui+Tapu Koko, that Tapu Koko had history of fighting many powerful opponents, protecting Alola region for many centuries and has one of the most powerful z move in Pokemon universe.
And becoming first ever Champion and beating a GOD of that region make Ash a legend, this is something most other Champions can only dream about.
@@inamdaryasin I'm not saying no; I agree with you. I'm just a bit miffed that the writers stopped short of at least giving him a title akin to champion. It would have felt more official to me that way, but, again, I'll have to give it a fair watch. My opinion may change 😅
@@authoreyes101 You have to keep in mind that Kukui has an edge against Ash that no other elite 4 member/Champion has. Kukui knew Ashs entire team since he had been living with him the whole time and while sure Ash had a mythical and legendary that he didn't know much about, he was fully aware of what Pikachu, Rowlet, Lycanroc, and Torracat were capable of. Other elite trainers would be too busy to keep an eye on everything Ash is doing.
@@joelss22 Yeah, that makes sense, but Kukui still lost despite that edge. Again, I'm not saying that the battle between the two wasn't good; it was a great final battle. But I guess my gripe with it is that, despite how strong Ash has been shown to be, the writers had him win the one league without an established champ.
All the other times that Ash has gone up against a champ (however short the battle was) he's lost against them. And the writers (for some reason 😧) always seem to take the win away from Ash because... reasons, I guess? (Tobias, Cameron, Alain - I'm looking at you 😑). I just don't understand why the writers don't want to risk their main character beating a champ.
In all fairness (since I haven't seen all of S+M), if Kukui/The Masked Royal was referred to as "the guy to beat" or "the best trainer in all of Alola", then I would be okay with it since that means that Ash beat the best trainer in all of Alola (essentially, a champion). Ash's team looks pretty promising in Journeys too, but I doubt they would have him win against Leon, Galar's established and "unbeatable" champion (it would be a huge shock if he did). I just want to see this kid win a league and defeat the champion of said league 😥.
