Mount Nyangani - "The Mountain That Swallows People"

  • In local Zimbabwean tradition, Mount Nyangani is inhabited by powerful ancestral spirits and is a sacred place.
The mountain has long been feared by the people of the region, a place to be approached with caution, and there are numerous rules that must be followed when venturing there.
A rash of such disappearances occurred here in the 1980s. In 1981, the two young teenage daughters of a former government official named Tichaendepi Masaya vanished without a trace on the mountain, and a massive air and ground search turned up not a single shred of evidence of what had become of them. Their disappearance remains a complete mystery.
A few years later there was the mysterious vanishing of a 12-year-old schoolboy named Robert Ackhurst, who wandered off from a group on a school field trip and seems to have completely stepped off the face of the earth. Robert’s teacher was so upset that he had lost a child under his care that he committed suicide the following year.

My family and I went up Mt. Nyangani and had to temporarily sit out misty clouds that had descended fast enveloped us and the national parks guide. We resumed climbing after the clouds had lifted again. The view is worth the climb. The springs of the the rivers on the mountain are very strange in how unremarkable they are ( you literally hop across the beginning of major river sources, effortlessly) at first sight, but the feeling of something tremendous around you, is ever present. As a Christian, I was in awe of how God creates strange places that seem to have deeper meaning and purpose to them. Imagine " doró" ( wetland associated with a river spring ) on top of the mountain ( not in the valley) . The word, " gate valve" kept popping in my head. A five herd of strange large antelope kept a gaze on us, all the time. We couldn't reach the highest point , some distance away, as we were running out of time to be safely on the mountain. Have to be down before noon. 2 days later, met with the mother of the lost children, but the topic was not discussed as we were on other business. Incredible woman, sad she lost her children that way.
Then read a story of a foreign tourist who spent the night on the mountain.
I would climb again, but need to train first, as some areas you climb 45degree inclines. Life is too short for fear to delay achievement.

You did really good Amanda. My husband is Shona from Zim & often tells me stories like this. It's so fascinating but scary at the same time because we have the same spirits, weird things happen here in the states. There's so much about our world yet the elders remind us of the respect we must have for the nature spirits. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to return to Zim in (2) weeks.

You actually right I come from Mt Darwin, not far from Mavhuradonha Mt Range, so they say the ansestor of the Shona Dzivaguru was buried in the mountains and back in the days they would perform sacred rituals to receive rain. Dziva means pool, and guru means large or big. You can relate that the name is related to powerful marine spirits. I am Christian but I can relate to these stories. Zimbabwe is indeed a very spiritual country, take it for granted then it would be your ruin

There are hundreds of stories from around the World of mysterious disappearances. Some people are never found, some are found dead, and some are found alive but seemingly unaware that they have actually been missing. Something strange is happening and has been happening for a very long time.

During Shona class, I've heard of stories where the tribal leaders and elders have performed rituals to retrieve lost people and when they have been found those people have had absolutely no idea that they were missing for so long. They think that they've only been gone for a few minutes or so.
Would love to hear some stories about the Chinhoyi caves too!

I think it was on the foothills of this mountain where the Zulu Shaman Credo Mutwa was abducted too. His story is incredible and could possibly shine some light on what's happening to these people that are going missing.

Incredibly fascinating to say the least. If you or anyone else are interested you should look into 'mountain theology'.A lot of the ancient works talk about beings from the heaven that descended upon mountains or reside directly above them.If These beings still reside on or above these mountains, then it would make perfect sense why people are disappearing without a trace. These beings clearly aren't benovelent though or maybe its something much deeper.nevertheless, thanks for sharing this queen, peace.

Presenter seems to have an idea of what she is talking about but appears lost in her presentation. Some factual and some hearsay. A bit of deeper research for presentation could have been alright. Other than that it was fairly alalrig. Grew up in Nyanga and other than the minister's children, there are lots of other stories and many disappearances. Bad thing is no one has chronicled all these disappearances
