  • In this video, I finish a long awaited home build project - to make a canvas Baker campfire tent. Used since the mid 1800s by the early fur traders and voyageurs and given a new lease of fame by the legend Bill Mason, the Baker tent is perfect woodsman’s tent for all seasons.
    Join me as I complete the build by stitching the panels together, add toggles, loops and tie-outs and make the poles. Then head out to the woods to try it out.
    I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    Prior to watching this video, I wasn't even familiar with this style/type of tent. Very nice piece of work Simon, and nicely done! 👍 Watching you work such large sections of canvas through a relatively small sowing machine, while at the same time... 😯 working with the camera footage was very impressive! Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge my friend - Cheers!.

    people always say,that's fantastic you could make and sell them,but once you've made one large tent you don't want to make another for quite some time,also when you add you time and costs it would not be a cheap option,making your own gear gives you great satisfaction and is well worth the effort from the planning all the way to the end result and that's why we do it,you will never care for something the way you care for something you create with passion and love,after all making your own gear is a labour of love and not a job

    Nicely done, sir. You do have a talent. Your material cost is what it is, but your time spent to make it offsets any other cost, and the pride you have in doing it yourself makes the project worth it. Bragging rights have immeasurable value, and the green hue people will take on from envious thoughts will make the time taken that much more satisfying. I was waiting for you to say "chuffed", and when you did I chuckled. I do love that phrase. If you were to make one for a friend, considering the time and expense........hell, he or she would have to be an extremely good friend, and they would appreciate it all the more; they would treasure and value it with each use, bringing to mind the treasured friendship with each pitching and striking of the tent.....every time the toggles were used, the poles sleeved and the zippers zipped, knowing you stitched each seam and toggle, and the memories brought to mind. A truer friend could not be known.
    I'm sure you'll find great satisfaction with each use, and deservedly so. Keep up the good work.

    Great Job Sir,
    It's been a couple decades since I made mine for my families canoe and winter camping trips. Heavy to haul but well worth it when it storms or the winter winds blow. Thank You for sharing. I am about to begin my second. This one will be of nylon ripstop for my motorcycle camping trips. The awning area for the bike on rainy nights will be great.
    Velcro for my removable tub floor was the best thing I could do and I'll be repeating that with this one. I wish you good times and sound sleep filled nights in your tent.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Eric - the floor is under way (that’s what the velcro is for) and I’m planning on making a mosi net panel that ties in - we don’t have much of a problem with biting insects where I live for most of the year. 👍

    Have you considered adding mosquito netting for summer use and a storm enclosure for fall or winter use, possibly with a door of overlapping canvas panels. Another possibility would be a panel with an aluminum stove pipe thimble square so it could be used with a small wood stove. Another might be a canvas awning for rain protection that would allow extending over a vehicle for tailgate cooking, washing dishes, taking baths, etc. Fire resistant homesote could also be used for the panel for the stove.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did consider a bug net panel and then using the side panels as the door - folded across the sleeping area, as was done with the originals. Biting insects aren’t much bother to me where I live, but I might still make a removable panel. As for winter use, the idea is to use an open fire under the porch area to heat the tent - keeping the front open for ventilation. 👍 nice ideas with additional awning and stove jack idea. 🔥
