It's Simon, a bloke in the Workshop! Excellent video and two exquisite paddles to be proud of. I'd be chuffed to bits to receive one of those as a gift from a mate.
The whole day long I laugh with the song, and paddle me own canoe, so love everybody, trust only the few as the world I go travelling through. And never sit down with a tear and a frown, but paddle your own canoe, I rise with the lark, from daylight to dark, I do what I have to do ! 🛶 Richard ⛺️Indoors ! 👌
I dont understand why some people use the term 'philistine' in some derogatory manner. It clearly refers to the Palestinian people and as such may be considered racist.
@@lordwessex9553 I beg to differ, Philistine with a capital P refers to the people, small p refers to to an indifference to artistic talent, i have no hostile intentions toward anybody except perhaps those that throw accusations of racism around where there isn't any .
The hard work and planning that you put into all your projects is something that shows in the end result, Simon. You are a true craftsman. Great work, as always. Take care.
I have no interest in paddles or woodworking...... But I have to admit, I found that strangely therapeutic. Watching a person who is good at their craft is so enjoyable. Thank you.
One of these days I hope to build a Cedar Strip Canoe and hope to add two paddles to the process. I've appreciated your skill and heart in making these two. Thank you.
Absolutely loved this video. Getting ready to make my own Ash/Cherry laminated paddles for whitewater rafting and this was by far the best paddle making video I’ve found to help get me on the right path. Keep killing it man 🤘
On your next paddle try only using oil on the handle and shaft and varnish or epoxy on the blade. An oiled shaft and handle won't give you that hand burn after a few hours in the canoe. Very nice work. Like the flex!
Just a tip..... use a banana shaped piece of 1"thick wood and staple across the 'open' side a strip of emery cloth tape. Brilliant for sanding round a curve. Mike
That sure is a whole lot of effort just to get some wood shavings for starting a fire. 😋😉😁 Lovely craftsmanship, just as with other things you've shown us.
I love the way you say, any one can do this without the machine tools you use, its not the tools that are needed or not, its the skill and I don't think many have the level of skill you have. Great vid and paddles.
Very nice looking paddles! I make my paddles from solid piece of wood (spruce) and only use linseed oil for preservation (which require top-up's now and then). Fibre glass and epoxy prolongs the life of the blade but I find it a messy business applying it. I use an axe, for the rough shaping, my Canadian croocked knife, a plane and wood carving knifes from Mora and sandpaper. I need to get one of those small spokeshaves though.
Yeap, same here, finish with linseed oil, no fibreglass, epoxy required really. Once you put epoxy on, varnish is a must to prevent UV from destroying it over time. Costly & unnecessary IMHO. Paddles are plenty strong without. Linseed oil is cheap & can be touched up any time. Also not as slippy when wet as varnish. For abrasion protection I apply a thin band of thickened epoxy to the tip of the blade.
OH THANK GOD, third video in a row where I have not found the need to go and cook something! Why is it a waste line increases like a Tide, but recedes like an Ice Age? Personally I'm not really interested in Canoe stuff, but watching a Master at work is a joy and a privilege! Keep it up!
Nice work. I make paddles for tribal canoe journeys in the pnw. Just a tip from someone who has paddled hundreds of miles with my own paddles, drill out and dowel laterally through your handle where you grip. Those handle ears will break off with all that vertical grain over time. It hurts like breaking a bone when you've made it yourself.
I dread to think the cost of those beautiful paddles. You deserve a beer and a virtual pat on the back. Wonderful craftsmanship and lovely film to watch. Thanks Simon.
A super video, and very nice paddles. I preferred to oil mine when I made it but I just prefer the feel on the shaft and grip when they are oiled. I take a plastic bladed paddle for the shallow stuff so it's not so critical to worry about protecting the blade. You've got a nice workshop for working in.
Solid looking blue clamps . . . hard to find beauties like those. I have some very similar ones that my Brummy grandfather (a pattern maker) shipped to my dad after Dad emigrated to Canada. I now share them with my adult son. Mine must be nearly 100 years old and they work like a charm.
Please let us know when you are using them on any future video of you paddling your homemade canoe. You give so much pleasure to your viewers with your superb videos. Thank you, Simon.
My thought process- nice workshop. Ooh band saw nice one too. Ooh axminster dust extraction and large disc sander. Knows how to sharpen a plane iron. Hang on Lie Nielson? Must be a professional! Sure enough... and it shows in the results. Top notch. I dont recall seeing a ball grip paddle before so that was interesting too. Great video. Thanks.
Superb! Wonderful craftmanship, and a beautiful and useful end product. I don't know how many times I've watched this and am always amazed. Do you remember roughly how many man-hours this took? Ball-park number, of course. Not counting drying times. Thanks for the many hours of enjoyment your vids give me!
You've created so much really unique and custom gear. I'd say better than the best commercial offerings. Hats off to you and all of your accomplishments. Great viewing!
Hi Simon Awsome video..a real and true insight into the art of paddle making..time and patience.👍and a great finished product that will give years of pleasure..Ginge will be stoked..with his... brilliant 👍👍😀😀
I couldn’t have hoped to see such an interesting video....quite so well executed. How did I not know that was lacking in my knowledge. I love your craftsmanship Simon. What a credit to yourself. Well done.😄😷🙂
I like that you only use 2 basic planes, your inspiring me to go finish a chair I need to make. It's nice watching someone who likes what they are doing/making, I used to be a sign maker, and went to school for industrial design, I've made some shaped/carved wood stuff and it is pretty satisfying for a while, but I end up dreading the whole woodworking process (the people at tool shops and lumber stores, picking through crappy lumber, dealing with tools, constant dust, tedious time consuming measurements to create acceptable quality no-non woodworker really appreciates or is willing to pay honestly for, and the fact that being a woodworker is essentially the best female repellent there is in the states doesn't help either.) so I dread it even though I'm good at it(and never tell people in person that I can do it). Great video as always!
My goodness that was great to watch. I also love that your workshop is full of old tools that will probably last forever. You and Jason should do something together. 👍🙂
Hahaha (blush) For now, that old stove just sits there, I acquired it you replace my old one, but it’s much bigger, so some roof work needs doing for the flue. 👍🔥
It's such a pleasure to watch you work on a project you enjoy. I love learning how all the steps, to the process, contribute to a thing of such beauty; like these two paddles. Thank you.
Truly talented guy you remind me of my late father he was a builder amongst other things/trades he once built a full size speed boat from scratch making his own formers to make a shell to fibreglass then using techniques similar to you to build the boat he even made his own trailer these are the kind of skills we should teach the younger generations. Thankyou for another great video hope you get as much pleasure using the paddle as i and many other subscribers did watching its creation all the best

Excellent Simon, beautiful work. I've been thinking about a paddle for a while but seeing I have identical spokeshave and plane that's it...has to be done now. I think you now need a traditional English Longbow in your life. This really is the highest quality informative viewing.

Thank you Tony!

Excellent tips and inspiration for restoring a paddle where the blade had rotted due to water ingress. Thanks a lot Simon!
Awesome Job Simon. They look fabulous and I'm sure Ginge'll be thrilled.
...and a wizard's staff has a knob on the end! Other drinking songs are available.

Thank you! To be honest, they’re a bit shiny for me, I think I’m going to bring them down to a soft satin finish with some wire wool. 👍
Oil on the grip, at least, is certainly better on the hands.
