- The solid state Class 12th chemistry by Durganand kushwaha
In this video we have discussed about
(I) Matter - Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter. Air and water, sugar and sand, hydrogen and oxygen etc.
(II) Particles of matter - Particles of matter are extremely small units that make up matter. They have the following characteristics:
Size: Particles of matter are very tiny.
Space: There is space between particles of matter.
Motion: Particles of matter are constantly moving in a random fashion.
Attraction: Particles of matter are attracted to each other by an intermolecular force.
Arrangement: Particles of matter are arranged differently in each state of matter.
Speed: As temperature increases, particles of matter move faster.
(III) Intermolecular force of attraction and intermolecular space
(IV) Properties of solids - Definite shape and volume
Solids have a fixed shape and volume because the particles in a solid are tightly packed together and vibrate back and forth in fixed positions.
Incompressible
Solids are difficult to compress because the particles are close together and there is little space between them.
High density
Solids are denser than liquids and gases because of their molecular arrangement and strong intermolecular forces.
Strong intermolecular forces
The particles in a solid are held together by strong intermolecular forces, which give solids their rigidity.
Low thermal energy
Solids have the lowest amount of thermal energy because the particles have no space to move around.
High melting and boiling points
Solids have high melting and boiling points because of their strong intermolecular forces.
