    I’m Irish and I absolutely love these family videos from Calabria in Italy in a beautiful, genuine Italian home, serving genuine Italian food - in many ways, it reminds me so much of how Irish culture used to be, but in more recent times has become far less so - perhaps because I’ve lived in Manchester U.K. for 21 years, I notice these things far more when I go home to Ireland on visits to my family in Rural Ireland ❤

    This is how my wife’s family in Sicily eat. Everybody together always. It’s such a lovely feeling to sit and eat this way. Even though I can’t understand too much, I am more than content. I hope these traditions don’t get diluted in modern times.

    I love this, this is exactly what happens in Greece too, with what would be considered extended family coming together to enjoy endless food, everyone talking over people, meals that last for hours... Nowadays, this is the case for villages and the countryside in general, maybe not so much for larger cities. But still, this is very familiar to us Greeks, that's why I think that we could visit anywhere in Italy and the similarities would be countless!

    • @dr.tomgio6694
      @dr.tomgio6694 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is because we in southern Italy are all actually Greek; don't let the language confuse you. Our traditions are directly from Hellas and we're all proud of that fact. In fact, we still have many communities where the dialect is Griko (Koine). As we say - Una faccia; una razza!

      And, for more, NOT only southerners do big meals with family, bro

    • @dr.tomgio6694
      @dr.tomgio6694 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@giovannimoriggi5833 Giusto, Giovanni; what you have written is correct to an extent. However, Puglia (Salento), Calabria (Kala Bris), Sicilia and the southern part of Campania were all colonized by different poleis from Hellas. Even the word "Italia" comes from the Greek "Viteliù." Napoli (Nea Polis) was a Greek city all the way through the Roman occupation and the primary language spoken there was Koine. The Roman elites would go to Pompeii and Herculaneum to immerse themselves in the Greek culture and language. To give you an idea of their influence, my mother, as an example, was the daughter of two emigrants to the U.S. from Terra Nova da Sibari, Provincia di Cosenza. This was a Spartan colony. One of my cousins had her do a genetic study and it revealed that she was 64% Greek. My nonno even spoke Griko and could converse reasonably well with his Greek friends in Philadelphia with little difficulty. There is also no question that the Romans regarded the Greek culture superior to their own and, as a consequence, it was spread throughout their empire. With the fall of the western part of the empire in 476 AD, the Eastern Holy Roman empire continued until the fall of Constantinople a thousand years later. Their primary language was Greek; Latino was secondary. It is easy to understand how the Greek culture took such root in the formation of our Western Civilization. With all due respect, to claim that it is merely an assimilation of a foreign culture that makes southern Italians appear Greek is an understatement. There was a reason that the Romans referred to l'Italia Meridionale as "Magna Graecia." Greeks had been actively colonizing southern Italy, Sicilia, Sardinia, and Corsica since the late Bronze Age - even before the collapse in 1177 BC. There were even Messapi from Nardò (Neretium) involved in the Trojan War under Odysseus' command. This was more than 500 years before the founding of Rome by the sons of Aeneas. To my mind, political lines on a map 3,500 years after the fact means very little in defining what we are.

    What a video, I loved how open and warm Carlo’s family was and patient with Sarah. My question is this everyday normal meal? Do Italian’s eat three meals a day or smaller with one big meal? With all that beautiful cuisine, it must be mandatory to only take one or two bites of each food being served. Just amazing! Wish my family had kept a tradition like that. Most likely would be once each week on Sundays after church.

    6:36 fun fact, that variaty is actually called Navel because of the form of the belly bottom. There is one that comes early, navelina, and the one that comes in march navel-late.

    Our families did also. My dads português family and my moms Canadian French families. All invited to our home or one of their homes for dinner some times 30 people or more. 🎉It is what family was all about. Now the family is smaller, and things are different. But my little family now get together 7 of us now. But less noise

    Just curious if anyone can compare a good salt and onion focaccia to anything over here, I think the outside crust on a pizza hut pan pizza is closest I've found.

      Every region in Italy, from north to south, has its own beauty and good food. Some interesting cities for history, art and food: Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, Palermo. If you are very young and want fun in the summer: Rimini, Riccione. And many other places. 😉

    Carlo and Sarah have you seen this show Rosie, she’s from Italy, she moved to Toronto Canada, she was in Canada for some 2 yrs or so but returned to Italy. She doesn’t put out videos frequently but her mom is a chef, they own 2 restaurants, she does’what she eats in a day’ or her fav Italian snacks or she goes to other places in Italy and shows us the food. It’s really fun. Italy is my most favourite country in the world. I live in Canada but Idd love to live in Italy in my dreams.
