The Acolyte - re:View

- In this video, Mike tells Rich Evans to watch The Acolyte. Not because Mike and Rich love a Star Wars™.... I mean, perhaps somewhere deep down in their cold, dead hearts they still do? But Mike asks Rich to watch The Acolyte because Mike knows Rich is one of the most honest, unbiased people he's ever met. Rich will tell it like it is. He’ll never sugar-coat anything. Now, this video is less about The Acolyte and more about the culture war surrounding it. After Ghostbusters 2016, they felt we were all past this as human beings. A movie or show is good or bad based on the quality and nothing else. Mike saw the figurative streets set on fire after the “Lesbian Witch” episode and his curiosity was piqued. What is this? What’s all the fuss? Then there is the now famous "R2D2 is a lesbian" clip. NOW Mike is REALLY interested because he always considered R2D2 to be straight or maybe bi.
All this madness stems from one thing tearing us all apart: Politics. Specifically identity politics. This show has become the figurative rope in a tug-of-war match between people that don’t want certain things in their Star War and people that do. Mike and Rich really don’t give two shits. They wanted to step back and look at this whole circus (note to editor: find more circus music) and comment on why it is happening now and what we all can do to prepare for the future (invest in canned foods and shotguns). We harbor no ill will towards anyone on the internet whose content we’ve referenced. From those that produce content complaining about The Acolyte and those that defend it. Everyone has a right to their ppinion and free speech on this topic and that includes us. We wanted to look at this whole situation, analyze it, discuss how we got here and possibly offer solutions. This world has become an unbearable nightmare and I want my ashes shot into a black hole. Part of me hopes that a huge solar flare from the sun reaches Earth and knocks out everything that runs on electricity. Then we can all then stop and listen to the sounds of nature. Get off social media for a while. See the beauty of this world we all share together... and then think about how outrageous it is that they called R2D2 a lesbian!!!!!! - บันเทิง

Diversity isn't the problem, the problem is diversity being it's main draw and purpose of it's story when the story is not related.
When they talked about ICE in Star Trek, I was like. Why does ICE exist in Star Trek? Didn't the world unite after WW3?
Diversity isn't a problem because it means nothing. Diversity never helped anything to be better. Ever.
Diversity is the problem when it's just their code word for non-white men. They could have easily made the cast more diverse while also telling a good story, but they made it too blatantly obvious that their priorities lie in hating everything the franchise was until that point and lashing out against anyone who disliked what they turned it into. Star Wars is far from the only one to suffer this fate.
Look at it like this. Most modern people don't understand satire, period. They want to feel politically motivated, despite not having satire. What do you do?
WHITE MAN bad, any other color/gender good. Bonus for being crippled or trans.
It'd be one thing if it weren't so prevalent. It's been consistently this for long enough that you'd have to be a fool not to have pattern recognition kick in. They're just good little boys and girls falling into the cultural zeitgeist propaganda abyss. Don't stare too long, otherwise it's poisonous gaze may give you some very incredibly trite and tiresome ideas for a new Ghostbusters reboot... this time all gay/trans/'colored' (there words, not mine, some of these freak have documents that say such) people. That market is an untapped goldmine.
@@ChrisDeve or, or they realized that opening up the universe to show other viewpoints that weren't those of white males might bring in a larger audience.
This is kinda why its unfortunate that the word "woke" has changed meaning so many times. My original conception of the word woke was when they cynically used diversity as a replacement for otherwise good storytelling. Like "yeah it sucks but at least the protag scores a 9 out of 10 diversity points".
But now woke just means "too many colored's and queers" or something. Makes it hard to be nuanced on something.
The original idea for the Jedi was wandering samurai. Lucas wanted to cast Toshiro Mifune as Obi-Wan, and it makes sense. His name, his weird robe, the obsession with an ancient sword, the fact that Jedi comes from the Japanese term for a samurai flick.
A lot of George's original ideas for things were better. I don't know why he went with the most bland garbage. Honestly, after thinking about it for years, I'm with Rich Evans. The Jedi are boring. Weird sexless weirdos that abduct children? The entire lore George showed us in the prequels is awful. I wish it was all still in my imagination.
@@d_boneswish1296Glad to see someone else say this. Grew up on the original trilogy, I still think the prequel lore a huge misdirection. I even think the concept of how we took a line about the “clone wars” and made a whole thing about it not great.
The word "Jedi" is a truncation of Lucas' original name for them, which was "Jedi-Bendu" a deliberate inversion of "Bene-Gesserit" in one of the many Dune allusions/inspirations.
The term for the samurai film genre is "chanbara".
But yeah, the Jedi as embodied in old man Obi-Wan were clearly meant to evoke displaced, legendary samurai of yore. It's one of the many Kurosawa influences present in that first film.
@MrSkeltal268 oh man, the things that went wrong in the prequels is endless my friend. Virgin birth "chosen one" prophecy? Why? That idea stinks George. Why couldn't Annakin just be some hot shot young pilot who happens upon a Jedi, and they realize he's force sensitive and take him under his wing for more advanced training? He was an orphan and doesn't know his family. I don't know, anything else would have probably been better than what we got.
@@Hydrogue In regard to samurai films, what the OP might be getting at is the term for "period drama" in Japanese is "jidaigeki," which in Japan usually refers to samurai-releated films due to what Japanese period dramas tend to cover.

It's a little disingenuous to say Star Wars Theory has his priorities wrong compared to starving kids in Africa without mentioning that the lead actress for the show put out a highly produced music video lamenting how she's oppressed while she's worth $3 million.
Its disingenuous to announce you watch SWT and expect that we're going to respect your opinion
Damn dude almost started to care
No matter how many times I read this it just translates to, "rich white people enjoy the lap of luxury in ivory towers, complaining about how bad they are treated, while peasants serfs and peons squabble in poverty"
@@Croakinyou're watching hour long RLM videos while kids in Africa are starving. Get a grip
@@Croakin He didn't state an opinion. He attempted a persuasive argument.
They are not letting Mr. Plinket review Star Wars anymore, but they still have him write the descriptions.
I miss Plinkett reviews…
Crazy how the Plinkett reviews are 10 hours of nitpicking the prequels and here they are today telling you you're a loser for nitpicking Acolyte.
@@moneenerd I think they're telling you you're a loser for still caring about this after the Disney trilogy
The wil Wheaton Stacey abrams section is so gruelling
The should let him do an oscar awards show and one of the "gags" is every single audoence member goes on stage to slap him in the face.
It felt like it went on for about 3 hours.
He's insufferable
It's beyond putrid. How do people watch that crap?
That was painful, and left me wondering who the hell is Stacey Abrams?
"It's just a beep boop bop bop robot!" Made me spit take fr LMAO
The Courtship of Princess Leia is pretty wacky. At the beginning Leia is considering a political marriage to a leader of an entirely new galactic faction made up for the book, the Hapes Consortium. Han Solo basically kidnaps her and they end up on Dathomir. Luke is there too looking for a holocron or something. They all get tangled up in a plot/conflict involving the matriarchal rancor-riding Force-wielding witches and an Imperial Remnant warlord.
So utterly random that this was the ONE book Rich read. Out of so very many, how'd he select this one?
I miss the mid 90s, when Star Wars was just 3 movies I loved and a bunch of books I never read.
And some great video games.
I actually truly enjoy the prequels.
@@CryptoscammersbewareNo accounting for taste I suppose.
@@Cryptoscammersbeware Prequels were no fun at all. Too much sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Same here. And then all of the people who suddenly were die hard fans since childhood, who used to make fun of me for liking Star Wars, once the prequels started coming out.
Like I knew people who read the books and stuff. I just couldn’t get into them.
It doesnt matter what theyre talking about it always comes back to ghostbusters
That response did tell the corpos that outrage would sell
Ghostbusters and Star Trek.
Ghostbusters (2016) was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand event that launched us into our current-year hellscape
RLM see themselves as a real world version of the Ghostbusters crew. Justifiably so.
@@Lobstro I can think of something more important that happened in 2016
I honestly would have been happy if Star Wars never came back. If it ended with Return of the Jedi and that was it
Rich is right: Farscape had incredible characters and writing. I miss the days of getting shows like that.
That stacy abrams bit was so embarrassing.
I had to skip through it, too much cringe for me.
@Shockwave1985 Can we get anyone better to shill something lame? Doubtful!

I'm not American, I have never heard of this person, but she seems to be Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks all rolled into one messianic hero. Will she bring balance to the force ?

They joke about tallying the white characters, but that's exactly what the showrunners did.
As a non-American, I had no idea who Stacey Abrahams even was. She seems nice; but the appeal of her appearing as a character for overseas markets is a bit limited. It would have been nice if the show would have told us anything about her. Instead of wearing her as a shiny badge, while doing narratively nothing to present or reflect her issues.

This reminds me of that Star Trek episode where Data O’Brien and Troi get taken over by evil entities on a moon but Riker doesn’t get taken over because of pain from a broken arm. Just like the pain of the Disney Sequels kept me from even trying to watch the Acolyte.
