  • Made this for my friends I'll be GMing a campaign for, and thought it might help other people. Let me know if I got anything wrong!

    My preferred way of doing "magic" in Fate, is using what the character knows in skills, and having a character aspect of how the character can use magic. After that, it is just story telling. So, using it as a magic bolt, just use shoot. "Invisibility" is Stealth. "Knock" spell is just a Burglary check. Of course, you can use a fate point to end up doing better, based on your magical aspect.
    This way, instead of a magic "skill", where you can justify "anything" as a spell, the magical character is no more powerful then a non-magical one. It's just "cool it's magic" as a special effect.

      I´m stunned, that´s such a great idea - seems straightforward but never striked me 😀

    It should be noted that that "Relationship" is also an aspect, so in your case whenever you character would go above and beyond because she is in love with ferris you could invoke and spend a fate point, and likewise whenever you would do something stupid that complicates your story because of that relationship it can be compelled.
    Superman/Clarke Kent for example might have a relationship aspect "Has a thing for Louis Lane" and a compel can happen whenever a bad guy knows that superman likes louis lane and is threatening to kill her unless superman does what he is told.

    Just as a clarification: GM (and any other players for that matter) can compel any aspect, not just Trouble. Out of curiosity, as English is not my native language, why do you refer to your character in plural?

    • @sigurdgram
      @sigurdgram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      "they" is usually plural, but it can also be singular and gender neutral. think of a person you hear the name of but you don't know their gender yet. You use "they" instead of he or she. This character is mechanical and does not have a gender, so you use "they" in the same way.

      It’s not really proper english. It sounds jarring here because it’s being used to refer to a specific known person whom could also be referenced by a proper noun. It only really flows right in a sentence in certain cases such as when the subject has not been fully identified. Though even then it’s not entirely professional. But since this is a TH-cam video not a research paper people can get away with it. And even though the character is a robot, it would sound weird to say “it” in most cases because it’s also a person. And to be fair, “he/she” or “s/he” doesn’t really work verbally like it does on paper. Anyway, you seem pretty fluent already, but if you’re still learning I wish you luck in that journey. And have a great time playing Fate of course :)

      Because you're learning and have a genuine interest: there's a big debate happening right now in America, in particular, around the use of they/them as a gender neutral pronouns. They've always been used informally in conversation when you didn't know the gender, but I was taught in school (1990s) that this was not proper grammar.
      These days, with the acceptance of people who identify as non binary and use they/them as their pronouns, it's becoming more common and acceptable to use this as a singular.
      The Christian right wing, which is prominent in America, is pushing back, as a way of pushing back against general acceptance of LGBTQ rights.
      So if you bring this question up... it's a big can of worms in the English speaking world.
      I just wanted to give you the context. We are in a moment of active language evolution with they/them becoming acceptable as singular pronouns, but it's a political hot button issue. Kind of interesting to see language evolve right in front of me, actually.

    5e player that just received the FATE condensed book for Christmas. How did you like this as compared to 5e (I'm assuming you also played 5e judging from you you mentioning the skills). I'm finally trying to branch out into another ttrpg in 2021 (looking into Fantasy AGE as well).

      I personally prefer fate! its a lot more open ended and focuses more on story and roleplay. 5e has more rigid structure, which some people prefer, but personally I'm not very good at math or memorizing rules, so fate is much better suited to my play style.
