    here is my tips of space managing on windows:
    1)change the location for the Temporary files, instead of C driver set it to D driver
    2)change the location where you install stuff if possible.
    3)edit the user profile location, instead of saving it in 'C:\Users' set it to save to 'D:\Users'
    4)use symbolic links. You can install Office to C but decide its better if its been on D due to space issues. Instead of uninstalling and re-installing office to D, you can move it to D and then symbol link it to C.

    alternatively what you could also do is install treesize which gives you a very easy to use overview of how big each folder (and program) is on your pc and neatly ordens it at size, then simply click through the largest folder which then displays everything in that folder again ordened at size and choose whatever you want to delete and when youve saved a couple of gb's which should take only a few minutes just continue as normal

      @@joshuadeleeuw That's not the case for me. I often use Disk Cleanup to delete temp files and often in the hundreds of GBs. It really depends on what kind of work you're doing.

    • @joshuadeleeuw
      @joshuadeleeuw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@akyhne hmmm, yeah oke, you are right. It highly depends, for me my drive also sometimes gets full because of temp files but most of the time i then just reboot my pc and it usually goes away, still i highly recommend treesize to see what is going on.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuadeleeuw Yeah, that's the reason why I've used Treesize for +25 years. But it's not a cleanup tool as such. Though it has saved me many times when I was running out of space. It has postponed buying many harddisks over the years.

    Any recommendations for cleaning out duplicate files? I'm not talking about backups. With around 2 decades or so of migrating computer to computer over the years, with lets say less than stellar organizing on my part, I'd guess around a third or so of my total used space is unintentional duplicates. I'd really like to clear them out so I could make some clean backups without so much wasted space.

      That's what happens when you hit OK on every question when installing programs, and save every file you download to the Download directory as it is configured after installing the OS. Same with videos, pictures and documents.
      Create a program directory on D:, move the Download, Documents and Videos directories to D: and suddenly you can start using that drive.

Shame, because it doesn't have to be.

      @@Visstnok Well, sure, I'll give you that. It ain't perfect in all scenarios. Though even in the worst cases, it's not that hard to copy paste some commands in the terminal or a config file. In all my life of using Windows, I also had to troubleshoot basic Windows problems. And they required either downloading sketchy programs, using the Registry Editor, msconfig, random .bat files, etc. All I'm saying is, it's not perfect, but for most people, the ease of use compared to Windows... that gap is not so big anymore. If you're not a complete beginner at using a PC, it's worth giving it a shot! To say it's "as shit as it ever was" is completely dishonest. Both Windows and Linux have changed in various ways.

      That's fine, but something I've been doing is splitting my main storage drive into two partitions- one windows partition about 120 GB in size, and the rest as some fast storage. Reason being, if I ever have to reinstall Windows due to some issue, I don't have to recreate all my files. In fact, I've got it to the point where most files in my account folder are in a different drive, such that if I need to reinstall I just change some registry values and add a symlink, then my profile is restored with 90% of the data back.
      Only issue is, programs that force installing on C, and Windows driver and component files that can't for some reason be deleted, unnecessarily fill up the drive. It's not an immediate fill-up but it is difficult to resize the drive.

    A lot of the bloat nowadays come from so many apps that each come with a whole Web browser they hide into.

    There are another to free space if you already delete temporary files but still full storage in it, is page file (virtual memory) in drives. Some page file use to open many apps as you want if you have only less than 16GB of RAM, but it can decrease your free storage itself as how much committed memory use.

      @@Redwan777 User specific. Text files. Manually delete them if required, or delete the user as /root. Software is stored in /root not the users home directory so their personal .config files will remain.
      Linux is a multi-user system so if you had 50 users and you deleted all of their personal .config files by removing software I imagine some of them wouldn't be best pleased. It's kinda how it's designed.

      @@keyspirits95Out of curiosity, which distro were you trying out? In basically any distro that's not Arch, setup should be way more straightforward than Windows. (I say this as an Arch user myself :) )
      Also, yes, EXEs generally won't work on Linux - they're Windows executables, and that's how this is supposed to go. In most cases where you want to run an EXE, the correct solution is to install the software via your package manager (apt, yum, pacman, etc). Otherwise, you'll want to look for Linux-native alternative programs - or dig into Wine, a Windows compatibility layer, if you can't find any other way.

    • @xb6xx
      @xb6xx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Of course they wont. Bro why do you expect windows programs (.exe 's) to work on linux? Does linux software works on windows? no. Linux and windows have different software (some softwares have both windows and linux versions). Also most distrod are just as user friendly as windows. (unless you use arch like me)

    • @goofyahdemoman1134
      @goofyahdemoman1134 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Then linux bros should realize how fruitless it is to convert many windows users.
      You need to provide them a similar enough experience to windows(minus the downsides) to get them to switch over. A whole file type not working is a MASSIVE dealbreaker.
