  • After a great sesh chasing reefies out of Houhora our day wasn't done, although getting late and probably should be making our way back before getting to dark we just couldn't resist dropping a big berley in the shallows. I have always wanted to fish this spot for many years and although fishing close by and sometimes further afield we just hadn't stopped and fished it. We only had a short 30min window before dark so we threw everything at it.
We dropped the berley and drifted some big baits down it in hope for some XOS snapper, I know this spot is well known for them so we had a great chance of getting some goodies in that short time. It didn't take long before we had bent rods and screaming reels, it was pretty hectic from start to finish. My first few fish were absolute screamers that didn't stick, they were solid as fish for sure and I was pretty guttered.
We had a school of Kings feeding on the surface around us and this spot didn't disappoint, although I dropped a few goodies we still managed a few nice fish on the falling light. Stevo managed a nice double fig fish and although it was a very short fish for us it is a place that we will be back to really scope out. We're hopping to be back in the north this Feb coming so we will hopefully really see what this spot has to offer - we can't wait.
    Tight lines

Seasons Greetings Jase. We caught some nice sized snapper using the rigs you advised plus how to bait. About 40 cms. We are loving night fishing until 1200 and then it dies off. I feel that the high tide at night produces more bigger snapper. We are heading to the Hibiscus Coast next week. Does fresh mackerel and kahawhai work better for fishing or live baits? Thank you Jase, we started exactly one year ago. We live in a blessed land! Keep safe out there!

@@lesliekistanministry191 nice to hear you have started getting a few nice fish and that night fishing is working for you. Livebaits can be hard to fish from the rocks at times as they can swim in a tangle and get snagged etc unless put under a balloon for a King - if there is fish in numbers it will work lobbing out a live bait. Fresh is good but you also still want those oily baits like pillie, once they turn up you can change over to your fresh Mac or Kahawai and it's always good to have a few different baits out.
Are you still going to try and find yourselves a little boat or just stick to the rocks for now?
You should notice now how much you have learn't over the year and still a lot to learn - just remember it will get better and easier the more you do, you'll learn when to use diff baits and rigs - keep it up and may the fish gods be kind to you :-)
Tight lines and good luck next week

@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing Thanks alot Jase. Yes, I do want to invest in a little tin, but after my studies and other commitments. I really appreciate your expertise and I have years to educate myself. I am also going to try for a kingi next year but early morning and at night because I am busy with work and studies at uni. The fishing and your videos offer alot of knowledge and relaxation after life pressures. My wife and kids are also catching nice 40cms size snapper. I remember in South Africa fishing 30 years ago and dad having to literally pull us (my brother and I) off the beaches because we were immersed especially when the bite was on and good size ones. Mum used to have the frying pan ready with special spices in a pot to marinate. So I want my whanau to have those great moments of living off the land, respecting our Provider and teaching the kids about real living, rather than glued to their devices. Jase it was so good fishing from 17H00 to 23H00 with strong bites and big grabs and landing some choice snappers. So good. BTW I am watching and rewatching all Maxistrike and your videos. The keeper hook and how you rig your pilchards is par excellent, so thank you. Keep safe out there and best of health and wealth to you and your whanau. Keep up the fab work!

    Dear Jase
Just came back from a very busy night fish session. I used pilchards and a three way swivel and cotton with a size seven hook and got some nice snapper. The bite was from about an hour pre high tide and just before light. That reef sinker and trace with S7 hook and oil baits really work. I also missed three powerful grabs ..wow. Thanks alot. LK

Nice - sounds like your starting to find your rhythm, nothing better than a few good hits to get the hart going...Rod buckling a bit of line squeal is what you'll remember the most on a good nights fishing :-)
