    On June 9, 1995, Batman Forever introduced audiences to what was likely the first CGI stunt double.
    In a few brief shots, a digital double lept from tall buildings and swung on a grappling hook, and was used to convince viewers that Bruce Wayne was more “super” than the average man. Since then, superheroes and digidoubles have gone hand in hand. Protagonists in superhero films often wear masks or skin-tight bodysuits, which makes them perfect candidates for digital replacement; fabric is way easier to replicate digitally than skin.
    Technology has only improved over the years, which means digidoubles are used for so much more than just “super” sequences. Today, digidoubles are used to give filmmakers and artists flexibility. Instead of being locked into what they’re able to shoot during principal photography, they can add and remove shots, completely change characters' costumes, and rewrite the script if they need to - long after filming is over.
    The video above breaks down some surprising uses of digidoubles in superhero movies - and shows just how often they appear in modern movies.
    Correction: At 6:18, we mistakenly labeled Avengers: Infinity War as Avengers: Endgame.

    Replacing a fabric or metallic costume is way easier than replicating skin or a human face. Find out why it’s so hard to make CGI skin look real, here: th-cam.com/video/NvFoKkWyZ5Y/w-d-xo.html

    Marvel has been increasingly copious in their usage of VFX. They opt to film even mundane scenes in front of a green/blue screen and then add settings in post instead of actually constructing sets and creating props.
    Why?
    Art directors, set decorators, and set dressers have unions. VFX artists don't.

      The human brain is really good at picking up what motions are possible in the real world and which ones aren't. A lot of the "superhero" animations look cartoony as a result, to the detriment of suspension of disbelief. It's one of the many things that put me off Marvel films. The Batman was a breath of fresh air in that sense, and it helps that Robert Pattinson is the first "modern" batman to not look completely jacked-- he's actually a believable Bruce Wayne.

    This really goes to show why these superhero movies feel so unmoored and fabricated. These VFX artists have incredible skill, but when you use it to alter and change almost everything in a scene it just loses its sense of reality and becomes ungrounded. Not every single detail in every single shot needs to be carefully curated to that extent, it just feels redundant and plastic to me.

    I understand when they have to use digital doubles on scenes when they drop from building or do very dangerous stuff. But for a scene where the character is just standing there or speaking to someone I don't understand why they use a CG character. That makes the movies feel soulless and sterile. You know it is true and you feel it, we just decide to ignore it because of the spectacle and the story, but you know deep inside how shallow these movies sometimes feel.

    This video is the pinnacle of laziness on the part of directors/producers of superhero movies. They get to set with a half-baked vision of how they want the scene to play out, and then completely change their minds and make the VFX artists recreate and replace everything when the director changes their mind. In the early days of VFX, directors had to be incredibly cautious about how and what VFX they were going to use, and planned out frame by frame exactly what to capture on set. Now every superhero movie is 95% green screen shots, and it really shows. That's why Jurassic Park holds up way better than the new Jurassic World movies. It's no surprise as to why Marvel movies cost $100 million dollars to make. Paying for a dozen VFX studios and thousands and thousands of VFX artists to do the work directors are too lazy to do themselves costs a lot of money.

    • @prayashshrestha
      @prayashshrestha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A lot of talks about "vision" lately. All directors have some sort of creative vision. Without it none of the vfx shots would play out as planned. Vfx artist needs something to work on the dont create tandom stuff out of thin air to make a movie. Its seems as if you havent watched the video properly enough when there was multiple mentions of directors using vfx shots to recreate the exact scene as they want even at the end stage of production. And its not just about money. Compare the budget of Captain America Civil war and Batman v superman both at 250 mil. But one has 4 times the success than the other one.

    3:34 also the digi suit is often just better because everything can be more than just skin tight. look at the digital collarbone. that's pretty much vaccuum sealed level of skin tight. why is skin tight good? cause people can see the muscles, they can see every little move but that isn't really possible irl without it becoming just cumbersome

      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you need it to be two-sizes too small and EXTREMELY elasticated to cling anywhere near that much, and it’s still not quite to the same level. And that causes back pain for actors so that’s another reason not to do it.

    The very first shot of homemade Spiderman suit in the first movie is a digidouble. As Toby's running down the alley and wears the mask it quick cuts to the cg model and then the wall scramble. Spiderman has been CG a lot, they've got better at hiding it. That's why it's preferable to work in the games industry more where there's less critic and scrutiny and CG design can actually shine.

    Feels pretty disingenuous to talk about this solely as a tech question without giving any consideration to the economics of it. VFX isn’t unionized while most other Hollywood departments are. Digital replacement is a “tool in the toolbox”-but not in the way it’s presented here.
