    Just picked up a Player Series P-bass today. Went back and forth for awhile between that and a J-Bass. Love them both but the P-bass 'player series" had more thunder on the lows and mids, and great growl on the higher end, and with a pick. So much dexterity for a passive bass. It's going to quickly become my go-to.

    Slapping and popping at 50% tone is definitely the sweet spot. Thank you for the showcase

      Thank you my man! That's always been the idea, and I'm glad it's coming across and what people want! Those demos where you can't tell because it's completely different musical content and technique each time are really frustrating to watch! Thank you for the support and the videos will keep on coming! T

    Love that colour scheme. First guitar I had when I was 10 was black with white pickguard and rosewood board. Had a soft spot for it since.

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a lot of people have a soft spot for it, I've always liked colour schemes that others don't, but the simplicity of this is hard to get wrong. Janek Gwizdala tells a story of being asked if he had a black P with a white pick guard and running out to buy one straight after the audition. Classic for a reason! T

    Great review dude. Love your videos. After nearly buying a squier jazz bass 20 years ago and plumping for an Ibanez before life took over and not playing for a while, I’m back at it and had decided I wanted a CV squire jazz bass. Realising all my favourite bassists play Precisions has me in a dilemma between a squier and a fender player series. I didn’t think it was worth the extra outlay but your review has likely tipped me the way of the Fender. Cheers!

    Hi Tyler owned both CV 70s and CV 60s now based on your demos, and I went out trying the player series this week and probably will end up with one of those as soon as I can. The CV 70s was way too brighter for me, too zingy all in in all, wanted something with a little less high ends in the sound. The CV 60s is awesome, great sound maybe with not that much presence and punch, neck feels and looks amazing, as for the player I was impressed by the sound, expected not to like it, actually expected to be something closer to the CV 70s but it isn't, so much definition in the sound compared to the other two. Sounded clean and smooth for my ears. I assume this is a classic p sound with space in it. I'm not that much of a bass player but I hunted for a clean sound with definition and that is not too bright. Keep up with great reviews!

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think the pickups in the Squiers really match up to the Player. They definitely have a vibe and character, but for me I watch more definition and clarity in the mids than the Squiers offer, which is exactly what you're said. I think the Player is a "just right" bass for so many people. thank you for the support and watching! T

  • @peterhess2610
    @peterhess2610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve played several of these basses at GC and what stood out the most was why aren’t they given a proper set up either at the factory or at the store. If I was looking to buy a new bass the way these things are displayed I would pass on them and look for something else. I think it’s really important to watch some you tube vids to learn how to do a basic set up. When I got my paranormal jazz bass from Sweetwater there was still some work to do to get it right for me.
    The first thing I did was swap out the standard bridge for a fender high mass bridge. Then I got some shims from screw Mac to correct the neck angle. Finally, a set of roto sound swing bass 45-105 stainless. I was finally able to get the action low enough so there was no buzz although I did have to file a fret a tiny bit.
    You gotta remember that as good as these basses are they still aren’t up to the standards of the American made basses. They can get close but that would involve some more expenditures but the basic materials are still inferior to the American basses. Would I buy one? Absolutely! For my needs I can’t justify spending twice as much just to get a little better performance. My squire paranormal sounds and plays good enough for my needs and I’m sure the bass here would be good enough for most people looking for a good bass at a reasonable price.

    Nice work Tyler. I played one a few weeks ago, and was bothered by the way the neck thickens up around the nut. Interestingly, the Squier Classic Vibe 60's P-bass doesn't do that. Do you think that is one of the differences between the the "Classic C" and the "Modern C" neck shapes?

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you! Those CV necks are definitely a little slimmer than most typical P bass profiles, despite the "vintage" in the name. The modern Cs don't thicken up towards the 12th fret. Vintage or standard C profiles really do (which I love) but doesn't work for a lot of people. T

  • @bones2532

    Nice demo again, Tyler! Is it just me or does the E-string sound a little dull and muddy compared to the other strings? Had this issue here and there on some of my basses, usually when the strings were older or not quite properly set up. So - as it is a new instrument right out of the box - I suspect it could be the strings. Fender's strings don't have the best reputation, so I'm pretty sure this bass could sound much better with other strings. My favorite ones so far are the standard Ernie Ball nickel strings (in case you don't want flat wounds, which are always worth a thought on a P-bass).
    Besides that, good sounding, average P-bass. No more, no less.
    I'm pretty sure, I will build my own one from parts without the F*-tag on it. No rocket science after all.

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, there's no rocket science, that's for sure! I didn't notice the E in person, but definitely a possibility, Could also be a pickup height thing, I normally have my E pickup poles a little higher that most standard setups. I'm currently digging the LaBella round wound strings. The Fender strings are totally fine and reasonably priced, but I agree you're not getting any magic from them like you can from certain brands. Thank you for watching and the kind words once again! T

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Yamaha wins for me. PJ + electronics + active passive and a great feeling build with that neck join, means it just wins for me. However, if you love the feel of a classic Fender, you really can't go wrong with a player, but as your only bass you're losing a little tonal variety when compared to the Yamaha. T

  • @modernsingingmethod
    @modernsingingmethod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi there Tyler, some great demonstrations on these basses, I really enjoy your videos, brother! Could you help me out here?
    I'm thinking about getting either this one but with a maple neck instead (which I'm guessing will make it sound even brighter?) or a Squier CV60s. I get it that this is a better build and quality overall,, but I tend to like what I hear from that 60s Squier too.(CV70s sounded way too bright in my ears). I was also thinking of throwing an SPB3 on it as my main style of playing is rock/heavy rock and although there are other choices for that, I still prefer that classic P Bass sound. I don't intend to use the bass for anything else but tracking with it in the studio for my songs.
    I guess the question here would be, would it still be worth the extra 200 quid difference for the Player Series over the Squier with the SD pickup?
    Thanks in advance, keep up the great work!

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the support my man! Given you won’t be gigging it, I would probably go for the Squier with the pickup. The tuners are a big benefit to the Fender, and for recording, but given you’ll only be playing it 3 mins or so at a time, I feel this is somewhat negated. I would personally explore other pickups as I’ve never been thrilled with that Duncan - it’s just not that exciting to my ear. The dimarzio DP146 would be my personal choice as an alternative for those genres! T

      Hearing about the tuning issues of the Squier I want to move to the Player Series now, haha! Apart from that would you cite any other major differences? And one last thing, if I did end up with the player series , would you still change the pickup to the DiMarzio on this one, too? Cheers!

      @@modernsingingmethod amazing happy to hear I’m in the ball park with that one! It’s a quality pickup! Other than that very similar basses. I always think it’s worth having as high quality tuners as possible though. It’s only once you have tuners that aren’t good enough that you wish you’d gone up a model. If I’m honest, I think the players are as good as the old American Standards - real solid basses for life. • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very close. Different feel with the more vintage glossy neck on the Vintera. I personally though the neck on this felt classier if smaller, mostly due to the finish. Every other aspect felt equivalent, as I say in the video, think American standards from 2009-14 ish! The bridge on these is a little better IMO. T

      @EmanCarbone 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TylerSpicer I did the brite pad thing on the 50s neck and the feel is great. Funny to think that when I got it in 2009, it was around £600/€650 new and it wasn't rare to find it second hand/newish for €400, which I did and has probably been the best spend for instrument ever. Then Fender realised everyone was buying them and they could easily increase the price to match the other lines, lol.
      Funny how I think that the look of the neck of those MIM Player and Classic lines is IMO way classier than some US models, primarily the Am performers. They're fine basses, but the necks look very pale and the logo a bland design after the 70s one.

    This is turning into my "starter kit."
    Do you think having a Player Series Precision Bass would be good too?
    To have that tonal variety, for a future semi-professional gigging musician ?
    Thanks, William.

      If you're planning to buy an amp just for home practice then i'd recommend the Fender Rumble LT25 or Fender Rumble Studio 40. The built in effects preset will expand your creativity...it'll be hours and hours of fun! BUT if you require an amp for shows then the Fender Rumble 500 is good enough.. plus its light weight.
      I dont work for Fender btw.
      All the best!

      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the P would be excess given you already have the BB and a P pickup in the Mustang. A P and Mustang do sound different, but not enough to justify it in a live context. I'd personally be in option paralysis between those. T

    I bought one of these in sunburst last year and I was surprised at how nice the player series alnico pickups sound. In my opinion they sound better than the old MIM standard series. They definitely sound like a proper p bass. Great for recording and even gigging. Of course there are still some differences when it comes MIAs or MIJs but for the price it’s great value for money. If you’re into modding this is a good platform to upgrade off the bat or down the line -like what I did.

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely agree these pickups are a big step up over the old MIM pickups! A proper P bass no doubt. I think these are incredibly solid on their own but no doubt would make great mod machines. As I say in the video, they feel like the old American standards to me and will last anyone a long time! T

      Always do your own setups if you know how as soon as you go home with it. I wouldn't trust factory setup as the climate and time can make things change as time goes on. My stock MIM pickup from 2018 sounds great...I just swapped them for EMG GZRs because I want more bite to my Precision.

    I don't know what to believe anymore. It used be to great when you were not working for a dealer and could be truly honest. It appears you are now just a sales rep for Guitar Centre now. A few weeks ago you praise the CV models saying you could basically change the name and some of the hardware and no one could tell the difference between them and MiM or even some US models. You even did a shootout comparison video saying in playability the CV was better than MiM. Now you say get the MiM instead of the CV's as if they are not even close, and that a used MIM is now better? Upselling at its best.

    • @TylerSpicer

      Charles Scharf it’s literally just every bass on its own merits. Tbh, every Fender is not that consistent. This one is a great example but I hate the colour. But if someone goes on the website and buys that bass and I was them, I’d personally be happy. Maybe I should do a video ranking all the basses I’ve reviewed and played. I’m not being dishonest or trying to mislead anyone, they really are just all sadly, that inconsistent. T

      @@TylerSpicer Perhaps a bit of an overreaction on my side. I had ordered a CV60 P a few days ago, the first ever for me buying an instrument online as I always prefer to get my hands on first, which is not so easy these days. and your video on them was a big part in making that decision so seeing you now say to go for even a used MiM over it threw me. Anyhow, my Squier has arrived since and I could not be happier, immaculate condition in every way. She looks, feels and sounds as good and in many cases better than any MiM I have have played, and there were many. So I should thank you for your review on that one instead. Personally I'd rather 2 Squiers to a single MiM for the money any day. Cheers mate, keep em coming, I'll be following.

      @@chuckybigbeat I'll chime in (with a wall of text sorry :)
      I have a Squier Mini Precision and a Bronco, Squier's two cheapest basses. They came with perfect shielding but dull frets and rough necks. I fixed them and now they feel like custom shop instruments but the pickups don't sound great.
      I also have a Player Precision. The frets are a bit sharp but they are polished and everything else feels and looks nicer. They didn't do a good job with the shielding in the factory and I'll have to finish it. The pickups sound very good. Modern with good high end but it's easy to get the vintage tone with flats, tone knob and amp EQ. The Player is a much more solid instrument, even with Fender's spotty quality control.
      Squier is currently killing it with QC but you still get what you pay for. If you have the tools and the knowledge you can turn Squiers into amazing players and with some hardware upgrades they sound like MIAs. If you get a good one you don't need to do much work and on stage or in the studio they sound fine.
      As you go up the product lines everything looks, feels and sounds better. For example the Vinteras have better tuners than the Players. The MIAs have rolled fretboard egdes and very good fretwork. The higher end MIAs have premium tuners and so on.
      Don't bash Tyler for speaking the truth.
      Squiers are perfectly serviceable but they might need work and they don't always have the same sizing and drill patterns as Fenders, something to keep in mind when considering upgrades. For the money they are amazing and very good for any price.
      The MIM Fenders are a step up but still suffer from shoddy QC sometimes. Unacceptable at the price point but it's up to us to make Fender accountable.
      The MIA Fenders are probably fantastic but they're priced so high that the law of diminishing returns will keep most people from buying them.
