You say Verdaleit didn't give up much by loosing his hair, but I reckon he payed the highest price of all. The players just didn't see the sick pompadour he had going on before the game started.
I mean compared to everyone else he got off easy Caim can't talk anymore Leonard cant see Arioch cant coincide and give birth And seere can't age at all
Fun Fact: Drakengard plays NOT in a fantasy world. Also the world is not called Midgard. It's the continent that's called Midgard. The continent formerly known as Europe. Because Drakengards world is ours, only that around the time of the roman empire a "giant metropolis suddenly appeared, along with magic and all kinds of fantastical beasts". Which explains why the cathedral city in Drakengard 3 looks so futuristic. It's Tokyo. At some point the story goes full circle, though we have yet to see at which point (and during which branch) Tokyo disappears.
Thats the only thing i dont understand abou this saga. So, basically a city from 2000 years in the future got teleported to the roman-viking age. Ok i get that and all the falling of the other empires because of that. What confuses me is one of the endings where Caim and the salt queen get teleported to japan breaking a dimension wall. So basically the world of drakengard is an alternative version of the normal world? When Caim and the dragon break into Tokyo they basically jumped foward in time
Once time traveling gets involved you can say goodbye to any logic or continuity, and may as well forget about trying to make sense of the plot. There is no point, as it is usually used to simply justify "we wanted to put cool shit into the game, but didn't know how to explain it in any meaningful way"
that's the "E" - "joke" ending in which they get teleported into the future, defeat the Salt Queen, and also the Dragon dies. The Dragon becomes a test subject, the Salt Queen unleashes a disease that when you get sick you meet with God, and you get two choices, become one of his warriors and subjugate yourself to his will, or decline his offer and turn to a salt statue and die. This thing people find incureable, they start developing android bodies in which they can put people's souls (Project Gestalt) and save the bodies not turning into stone, and after the disease has passed, people's souls would be returned to their bodies. Blah blah blah, The joke "E" edning is the continuation and spinoff series of NieR and then NieR Automata.
Err... no. You're mistaken. Drakengard's world isn't Earth. It's another world. You could argue it's a parallel world or timeline or whatever, but it's nothing like the real world. It has magic and the gods actively participate in the world's status... mostly by trying to destroy all of humanity. You're conflating the Ending E of Drakengard 1 where the Queen-Beast bends time and space after being attacked, causing Caim, Angelus and the Queen-Beast to be pulled into our world, leading to Nier's world. Being that the Queen-Beast is a Watcher, a servant of the gods (an angel, basically), it isn't surprising it has the ability to cross dimensions. Its death in Tokyo caused the White Chlorination Syndrome that plagued and killed humans turning them into salt (or turned them into monsters if they accepted the pact it forced them into) and Angelus' death lead to the discovery of magic, which came in the form of the Sealed Verses you use in Nier.
Ahhh its almost time again for my annual Clemps Drakengard-Nier analysis marathon again! Lost count on how often I rewatched these! It's just that cozy to watch em!
Something I’ve always found to be kind of a contradiction is “joke ending,” and how elaborate the conditions are for unlocking them. Like Drakengard for instance, the prerequisites to unlock Ending E(“joke ending”) are so elaborate and deliberate that sometimes it makes me wonder if these “joke endings” are actually the canonical endings. I’m speaking more so in regards to Drakengard as a series. Like, we gain so much more character development and understanding via completing the requirements to unlock said “joke endings” than we do by completing Ending A. It just too convoluted and elaborate for it to be a “joke ending”. There’s gameplay based around that particular ending, it’s canon in my mind. 100%.
I like games which have multiple endings because you can choose the ending you think is canonically right because they all could lead to something interesting I like the ending where Caims sister becomes a monster and invades earth would make for an interesting sequel
I'm way late but you got a point. The two actions also have a neat dichotomy, the bond of souls bringing about power and the bond of hearts bringing about destruction.
Every now and then I kept coming back to this video and be amazed about the balance between telling the story and mixing up with your characteristic humor and own analysis of the game and endings. A really comprehensive refresher of a little stiff game but with a great story. Thanks for this Clemps! Keep up the great work. Also... F**king Seereeee
Playing through this game right now and am amazed at how not bad it is. It's not that boring if you tend to do repetitive things for fun. It's one of the most cathartic Dynasty Warrior style games next to the recent Berserk game. This is basically nuttier Berserk, anyway. Ended up spending most of a day playing this. The soundtrack is probably going to be up there with Morrowind's and The World Ends With You's soundtrack once I finish even half of this game.
0:37 kinda funny how there was a time Yoko Taro was not as recognized as he is today thanks to Nier Automata sky rocketing his reputation within the industry
Lmao same here. A friend of the family gave it to my brother and I. I don’t think we got very far bc I really only remember the dynasty warrior combat and dragon sections.
Ah, Drakengard. One of my favorite PS2 classics. World ending fantasy flair with memorably fucked up characters. Where the "hero" has incestuous feelings for her sister & vice versa, those two other party members who one is a pedophile & the other a child eater. I still remembered I only managed to get Ending A,B,C & D. Never did managed to get that Ending E that led to Nier.
Okay, but that world without song line is actually pretty amazing, thanks to coming from a bard. Also, I come from 2021, at the recommendation of Dan Floyd over on Playframe! He just started Nier: Replicant's remake and recommended hitting these up. :)
Great video Clempy poo. It is pretty neat to learn about these games having never had an opportunity or interest to try them out. Inuart sounds like something I would name a deviant art account if I had one.
Thanks for this, Drakengard was always one of those things that seemed really interesting but I never got around to checking out, so I was pretty ecstatic when you announced these videos. Here's hoping you eventually cover the whole main series.
Is it just me or do the human and beast "souls" look kinda like cells (and machine cores from Nier:Automata?) And the Pact seems to parallel how androids partner with a pod that has powerful ranged attacks...
Clemps, this must be like the sixth or seventh time a I watch this video, and I must say, I always come back to it. The way you summarize and tell the story for those who were unable to play the game, it makes me want to keep listening to whatever story you may have in store! This game will always have a sense of magical mystique for me, as my ps2 is almost dead and I cannot make it work to play it. So thank you for bringing this to us - you're a perfect storyteller, and also a talented comedian. You've grown so much the last few years, but these videos keep being my faves
I had been familiar with the Drakengard series for some time, but had always been intimidated by it so I kept postponing trying it out. This video series is what finally gave me the motivation to sit down and go through Drakengard 1, and I just cleared Ending E. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Seriously my 6th rewatch of this video. Idk why. Whenever im in a new low of depression i just boot up the drakengard playlist, thanks man for this masterpiece, very appreciated
Here I am, back again for another watch of the whole DrakeNier analysis by papa Clemps before release of Replicant. If it wasn't for this series, I would most likely not bought Automata and now Pre-ordered Replicant. Thank you Clemps :3
Hey, some ginger creature told me you could help me catch up on the lore in the comming of Nier:Automata. But I think I'll stay here for a while. It's really nice to see a content creator that looks like he's having fun with stuff he makes.
My strongest memory of this game was of watching my kid brother play it and then getting into an internet argument on GameFAQs when I made the observation that Japanese games tend to use drakes and call them dragons even though they have no forelegs. I thought it was just some cryptozoological trivia but you'd think I'd insulted their bloodline and raped their dog. Put me off using comment boards for a few months.
I actually started playing Drakengard when you announced this review, I can say it was almost worth it. Fuckin' grinding and shit. This video though is fakkin fantastic mate. Very in-depth and well structured between information and comedy. I was hoping for another stupid intro with Onee-chan and everyone's best friend, FFIX. But, this is Drakengard (gets nuked)
Commenting after watching everything including the automata videos, well done. I had to watch these as a refresher for drakengard because I forgot how the nier universe was created and how Drakengard 3 related to 1 and 2. So thanks for all of this.
I come back and watch this series every few months, just to remind myself how clemps can describe a game in such a funny, yet greatly descriptive, interesting and impactful way love U clempy
Lana Rain Oh wow! Didn't expect to see you here, Lana! :) I saw your BlackBox NieR: Automata unboxing with the 2B Cosplay haha. I wish I had that figurine imo, if only I knew about this awesome series earlier I would have preordered the black box too. :/ Oh well xD
Jesus :P I forgot how dark this game was, the music does a fantastic job of giving the game a twisted/depraved feel. Oddly enough I was severely depressed when I was playing this game as a teen, feels weird looking back on it. I never found all of the endings/understood all of the symbolism and backstory at the time too, so it's interesting to see what I missed :) I never played 2/3 or the Nier games either so i'm curious to see where the story goes.
This video is what started it all for me hahaha, and I think it probably helped in getting a lot of other people into drakengard/nier before nier automata released.
So this video is old but I wanted to comment that I've just finished watching the entirery of this series for the 3rd time, still couldn't explain it all in one go if I was asked, but I love your work. Great games, and you're lovely as usual! Thanks for putting in all this work!!!
And here starts the lovely journey from the heart i say this is my first time watching long hours of someone just talking without me skipping a second or getiing bored
The gameplay and the music are condensated madness. The cutscenes are theatrical. The plot is subtle, even if some intermissions are repetitive and senseless from a western POV. I can only hope for a remake with more fluid mechanics.
this is the first video of yours i've watched and oh man, your humor is spot on. so looking forward to watching the rest of these leading up to automata. once i beat automata i'll come back for those videos as well
i hadn’t heard of this series till the third game but wasn’t sure if id ever get a chance to play em all and i love your summery of the game. even if i haven’t played it i love the story!!!! Its the kind if crazy shit i wish i could create and was in more games XD
I just noticed that you point out that Mona Marshall does two voices in this game, she also has 344 roles on IMDB, most importantly, Musashi, from Brave Fencer Musashi. Or Sheila Broflovski if you're a South Park fan
Meek and Ashamed Zaibatsu pulls through again! I've finally got more excellent content to consume while taking a dump at work! And that's high praise! I only put on videos I intend to pay attention to completely and not just play in the background, while on the company commode!
Maybe the line welcome to a world without song is a reference to the third games song based magic ? Like maybe he had the idea and wanted to hint it in this game ?
Verdelet payed the highest price of all. We just never got to see the sick fucking pompadour he was rocking beforehand. .... W8, didnt I make this joke months ago and am just making it again to capitalize on the likes of new people coming form the SBFC to make me feel like people care about me in order to distract myself from the existential dread of the eventual heat death of the universe? (scrolls down) yep, I should take up drinking.
The reason Manah was hated by her mother was touched on in drakengard 2 (if you wanna even use it as source material ever) if you read the story on the hero's knife/Hero Miserycorde. Essentially, their mother was at a babyshower and a prophet barged in and was like, the child is a child of heaven or something, but also that if it brings misfortune that the child should be killed with the hero's knife, at this point they believed it would only be one child. However, after having twins she interpreted it as one child is good and the other is evil, thus why she treated Manah so horribly.
13:38 That's where it all started. Call me crazy, but I think the fact that Seree isn't needed for the first ending is the reason why the world is set in motion for the time paradoxes that happens throughout Drakengard and Nier. If my memory serves me correctly, Brother One's bloodline splits the timeline with Seree and Manah's birth creating the Drakengard 1 universe. In the other endings besides "A" Seree and Manah were always present, albeit offscreen. What if the events in the other endings were all calculated and planned? I might have been a knucklehead for just realizing it, but ending A is the only ending where the world doesn't end. In all the other endings the world is destroyed or is on the way to destruction. Even in Nier, the Legion is much like the Empire where they are a collective hivemind serving the Watchers. It didn't strike me as odd at first since it was a norm in the game, but how did the Empire come to be exactly? It's evident that the people who are in the Empire were forced into a pact with the Watchers and the Seals could have a second function of preventing people from being forced into a pact against their will. I mean a thought had occurred to me when I pondered this: "What if the Empire consisted of people who were foreign to Midgard?" if that was the case, then the people of Midgard had an immunity against involuntary mind control or force pacts. I dunno, there's a lot of puzzle pieces that aim in different directions. But one thing is for sure: somebody is looping time to find a way to find a specific result, and that somebody isn't Discord. All I can surmise from this genius game is that there is a bigger game being played and the Watchers are chess pieces like everyone else.
im gonna riot if 2b dies at the end of automata. At least she is an android and her AI can get back up but i bet yoko taro is gonna make a fucked up shit where 2b is fucked beyond repair or where she can't get backed up. Fuck, im already rioting.
Oh god yeah definitely happy i subbed! Having someone else who loves yoko taro and is a fan of FF 9! Ughhh! I was even at Best Buy earlier and the guy checking me out while i was buying two j-rpgs and we were talking about Nier Automata and your name came up. I was like i love his videos! You’ve apparently gots quite a few fans here in NYC :-P
You say Verdaleit didn't give up much by loosing his hair, but I reckon he payed the highest price of all. The players just didn't see the sick pompadour he had going on before the game started.
3 years later this comment still rocks.
Boring Name ken doll
It wasn't a pompadour, but he did have some luscious, flowing locks.
He saved Josuke as a child. His hair style as a result lives on through the Jostar line. Drakengard is a Jojo reference
If only I could be cool now as I was 4 years ago, this guy was pretty funny
I swear I've rewatched these analysis videos at least 40 times by now, these are PEAK quality right here.

14:52 "-but this is Drakengard. Where no one is allowed a happy ending." That sent chills up my spine. So damn ominous.
To be fair, Yoko Taro has a point. I meant what person who kills a lot of enemies deserves a happy ending?
Yaaay! I did the "Read it just as it comes up" thing I hear so much about! Consider your comment narrated!
_"He sacrificed his HAIR to make a Pact"_
This had me rolling. That guy was a _genius_ to only sacrifice his Hair! lol
Yeah. But still.
Did it mean something to him? Or just another Anime trope?
I mean compared to everyone else he got off easy

It's amazing that Nier Automata, even after all these years, still has references to this game! Yoko Taro loves throwing in little easter eggs.
Like what
oookaayy doood Eve’s tattoos
@@tackwardsfongjump1800 oh yeaah i forgot about that, his tattoo is like the cult of the watchers symbol or something right?
oookaayy doood which is also kinda a reference to drakengard 3 because the symbol was retconned and now represents one and her brother.
I mean it makes sense since Drakenguard IS the starting point to the series.

Why does nobody talk about the fact that a black box reaction from Automata looks a hell of a lot like Caim and Angelus' pact making?
I'm way late but you got a point. The two actions also have a neat dichotomy, the bond of souls bringing about power and the bond of hearts bringing about destruction.

I wish I had that figurine imo, if only I knew about this awesome series earlier I would have preordered the black box too. :/ Oh well xD
Oh god....I kinda want to try it.
Jesus :P I forgot how dark this game was, the music does a fantastic job of giving the game a twisted/depraved feel. Oddly enough I was severely depressed when I was playing this game as a teen, feels weird looking back on it. I never found all of the endings/understood all of the symbolism and backstory at the time too, so it's interesting to see what I missed :)
I never played 2/3 or the Nier games either so i'm curious to see where the story goes.
This video is what started it all for me hahaha, and I think it probably helped in getting a lot of other people into drakengard/nier before nier automata released.

Ah. So It's Game of Thrones but instead of a sudden death, it's basically Nukes.
Kay.
This is like what my 5th time seeing these videos on drake gard ? I love it too much and i cant stop XD
So this video is old but I wanted to comment that I've just finished watching the entirery of this series for the 3rd time, still couldn't explain it all in one go if I was asked, but I love your work. Great games, and you're lovely as usual!
Thanks for putting in all this work!!!
Coming here after Nier Reincarnation got shut down, in the desperate hope we’ll see Clemps do a video on that.
And here starts the lovely journey
from the heart i say this is my first time watching long hours of someone just talking without me skipping a second or getiing bored
On my biannual clemps draken-nier pilgrimage
Edit 2024
Just wanted to say this series is one of my favorites on TH-cam. So excited to watch through it all again.
These videos are top fucking tier, I come to watch them again and again
You killed it on WizBrew man
Watching the whole analysis series then combing back here. What a trip.
I remember watching this a year and a half ago. Still gold as always!
These Drakengard reviews might be my favorite set of game reviews on YT. Keep up the amazing work man. Also, nice gloves.
I love your comedy and your commentary man. Almost as much as these awesome games. Keep on making content and being yourself.
this is the 12th time ive watched the analysis playlist and i cant get enough
What's up with all this characters wanting children inside them
Nah Leonard wants to be inside them
rewatching all these in the midst of the Great Church Search of 2022
I fell over in my chair when Clemps started talking about making a pact with a dog.
Revisiting this playlist - holy crap does this entire story hit just right
The gameplay and the music are condensated madness. The cutscenes are theatrical. The plot is subtle, even if some intermissions are repetitive and senseless from a western POV. I can only hope for a remake with more fluid mechanics.
Great informative and entertaining video, I've only played Nier so it's nice to learn about Drakenguard. Looking forward to part 2!
this is the first video of yours i've watched and oh man, your humor is spot on. so looking forward to watching the rest of these leading up to automata. once i beat automata i'll come back for those videos as well
i hadn’t heard of this series till the third game but wasn’t sure if id ever get a chance to play em all and i love your summery of the game. even if i haven’t played it i love the story!!!!
ZAIBATSU BOYS
Meek and Ashamed
Zaibatsu pulls through again! I've finally got more excellent content to consume while taking a dump at work!
And that's high praise! I only put on videos I intend to pay attention to completely and not just play in the background, while on the company commode!
omg, I found another human that likes Drakengard!
I like Drakengard.
I mean, I like its weird ass story. Maybe not the gameplay, but I do really like just about everything else!
Really late, but I like it. The gameplay maybe wasn’t great...but the weapon’s abilities made it interesting for me.
(scrolls down)
yep, I should take up drinking.
BaneDain Did you say pompadour? *has an aneurysm*
2021 and This is Mind blowing all of the games are connected from a joke ending 😳

That's where it all started.
Food for thought...
Why don't you have more followers? Your style and editing is fucking good! You have this whole "Jontron met Austin Eruption" vibe going for you!
Caim did nothing wrong
These videos are just getting better and better Kneesocks.
Time for my monthly viewing of this entire series
oh lawdy, I've been waiting with so much anticipation for this.
Wow this is great stuff! Looking forward to watching all of your Drakengard videos 😊
Back again for another binge watch! Helloooo!
Ah same here, I love this series of videos!
Angelus voice actress is kyle mom from south park XD
Congrats on all the new subs man, you deserve it! Personally I love seeing someone that shares my same weird taste of Yoko Taro games and Yuyushiki.
im gonna riot if 2b dies at the end of automata. At least she is an android and her AI can get back up but i bet yoko taro is gonna make a fucked up shit where 2b is fucked beyond repair or where she can't get backed up. Fuck, im already rioting.
She died at the end of the demo so chances are high.
Came to rewatch this, again.
Seems I'm watching this playlist 5th year in a row?
Insane.
I hope they make more drakengard games just so we get more videos from you.
5:44 I wasn't expecting the sudden Touhou arrange
Oh god yeah definitely happy i subbed! Having someone else who loves yoko taro and is a fan of FF 9! Ughhh! I was even at Best Buy earlier and the guy checking me out while i was buying two j-rpgs and we were talking about Nier Automata and your name came up. I was like i love his videos! You’ve apparently gots quite a few fans here in NYC :-P
8:12 NOOOOOOOO, Navi made her way to drakengard
Thats where he went at the end of oot
This video was definitely one of the most videos of all time
BACK TO THE CLASSICS, time to watch the whole DrakenNier playlist again
