      With music and entertainment, we have the ear and voice of the people. Companies pushing your material with your ideas for free. Music can pay forever especially rap. Add to your catalog, get in some movie/commercial scores. Takes mass marketing. Soul song “I heard it through the Grapevine been a hit 40-50 years. Someone getting paid. Re-up skill set for current times because that’s all music industry does by hiring someone who knows. Don’t sell your catalog; expand it. For icons, it’s lot easier with doing the work.

      Definitely not true. The whole point of building a business is to grow it to a point to where you can cash out at a substantial profit margin. Michael Jordan just sold the Charlotte Hornets, he didn't sell ot because he was losing money and he sold it for 4x what he paid for it. The L.A. Clippers have been a bad franchise forever yet when Donald Sterling was forced to sell he sold it for 2 billion, he paid 12 million for it in 1981. You do whatever is smart business at the time.

The only reason masters are profitable for labels is because they have the machine and the power to call in favors and put a song in a commercial, movie, or make a label sample it for their next big hit. If you can’t do those things, which is almost impossible to do without top industry connections, your masters ain’t that much money. Master P and his family can’t live off No Limit catalogue bc it doesn’t generate the type of money that you think it does. If it did he wouldn’t have to sale it. The artists that are selling their masters would die before they see the type of money that they’re getting from selling their catalogues. He's right to an extent, far as catalog you don't know how much is really being sold. He doesn't know if the value is going down. Finally there's a lot of business people that will start a business see a peak and leave. That's where the term serial investor comes from. Fckin dude that started Chipotle did the same with McDonald's at one point.

    They're selling their catalogs cuz They're older and don't make music like that anymore and will get more money quicker than off waiting for streams. They can still tour n do shows off their hit songs. I'd sell my catalog too.

    Owning your masters is much different than owning a chick fil a. There is a point in time in every artists career where the music you own is worth more than it'll ever be. These guys are selling their masters and starting venture capitalist organizations and actually investing in better businesses than music

      Residual cheques for life over one big cheque for me bruh. Alot of them got short changed imo. How Justin Beiber and Dre catalog going for the same price??? Black rappers can still own thier shit and setup investment ventures.

    • @mikeb3936
      @mikeb3936 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrNigeriaboy but it's not like those residuals will be the same year after year. Every year your out of the media's eye you will earn less each year. Why not take a huge lump sum and reinvestment than watch your residuals fade into nothing. It's also a cautionary tale. Malcolm Jamal Warner said a big portion of his income came from residuals from the Cosby Show. Once Cosby was arrested for drugging women he said he hardly gets anywhere what he was getting prior. Plus the only one selling their masters were top acts and they're fetching 100-400 million off their catalogs.
