I'm a Tera veteran, having been part of the game since Closed Beta 1 and every beta thereafter. Over the years, I’ve built a roster of 24 alts, starting out as a sorcerer but eventually finding my main in the Priest. Today, after a three-year break, I logged back in, and as soon as I heard the familiar music and saw those beautiful landscapes, I couldn’t help but get emotional. This game has always held a special place in my heart. It’s not just the gameplay; it’s the friendships I made, the connections that have lasted and grown over time. The memories I’ve made here are priceless, and I couldn’t even begin to count the hours I’ve spent in Tera. Your video really captured that feeling, and I want to thank you for putting it together. It’s a reminder of how much this game has meant to so many of us. I extend my best wishes to everyone in their future gaming endeavors.

I remember getting into Tera in early 2012 as my first mmorpg ever, and had a blast right from the start, absolutely clueless about everything, but having fun with my friend on the EU server Veritas. We quit playing before even getting to level 60, but when I decided to return on my own I was determined to learn and get good at the game. And not just skill wise as a player, but to actually get that PhD in mmo lingo and understanding the ins and outs of the game, everything from UI to basic concepts that mmo veterans often take for granted, learning new systems very quickly between different games because they have the basic knowledge under their belt.
I ditched the archer I started with and even moved to NA (Tempest Reach) because EME was leagues better than GF, and rolled a priest in hopes to make friends easier and to give myself more responsibility, forcing me to get good fast lest others die on me. Was picked up by a newly formed guild and mained that priest for a couple of years before that guild disbanded. I wanted nothing to do with the toxicity on what then was the hardcore pve server to the hardcore pvp server of Mount Tyrannas, and I needed a break from that as I started developing some elitist mentality myself that I didn't want to stick, so I moved to Celestial Hills and rolled a sorcerer. And there, amongst the carebear casuals, I found a permanent home. Made tons of friends and good memories, and the core members of my final guild are still together talking everyday on discord, and I ended up amongst them because they were new and in an effort to undo my own elitism I went out of my way to help them and teach them everything I knew, got them into endgame, with a much healthier attitude and had way more fun. And I can proudly say I was a good player, so baby me at the start of my journey got her wish of getting good fulfilled. Not top player, but better than average and not at the cost of my kindness and patience with others.
Tera absolutely obliterated other mmo's for me. I'm currently desperately trying to get into FFXIV just to have something to do whilst waiting for Blue Protocol, but the tab targeting is really difficult to get into after Tera. Even other action combat mmo's just.... don't hit like Tera. I am hoping BP suffices as a replacement, or at least a close alternative until something like Tera comes along.
Also, FWIW, I predominantly played elins myself, because I thought they were cute and appealed to me more than other female characters. And in my experience, most elins I interacted with were either a) girls who also preferred cute over sexy b) harmless weebs c) players, especially pvp players, who cared about casting animation, and finally d) the meme supremes and edgelords that played into the elin honey and fbi jokes on purpose to wreak havoc and make gullible players even more appalled by the race. Were some costumes bad? Yes. But idk, my main practically lived in the oversized snowsuit hoodie, which was far more relatable to me than any metal bikini on a castanic ever could.
This is way too long but as a final note, EME's decline nosedived the moment the original members of the team left, such as our beloved Tonka, Minea, and Harmonia. The whole proxy war was just tragic, and might have played out differently had it happened a lot sooner whilst EME was still genuinely a good publisher.
Here's to hoping us Tera orphans find another Tera to call home again soon.

Do you currently play on a Tera private server? I'm really considering it to re-live the nostalgia I felt when playing early 2013-2014. I miss the expansive world and my World of Warcraft private server is so incredibly toxic and evil that I have to take months off at a time just to not succumb to the same elitist attitude because, admittingly, I"ve played the game for so long that I know the ins and outs very well, to the point where I could probably be a bona fide GM and do a kickass job at it.
I'd love to play Tera again, but I hear the current version really sucks and I don't wanna ruin the good memories and impression I had of it. :(

The thing that killed this game was EQ Skyring, followed by the constant removal of content which occasionally got "replaced" The 3/5/7 dungeons being reduced to just Channelworks, alliance conflict being removed, and the constantly removed and replaced hard dungeons. New gear comes in, but it's basically just the same as the stuff before it but bigger attack/defense. This game needed to be sold to a better developer.

Ultimately TERA was still very much "milkable" globally with KTERA, JTERA plus Gamforge (NA, EU) TERA. The ultimate decision to shut down came from BlueHole its creator, Asumingly saw no further value and gain in continuing the development of TERA as it had basically completely stopped bringing in new players. As all the problems I mentioned drained the game of its players, it still had a dedicated hardecore playerbase. Krafton the main Studio owning Bluehole ultimately pulled the plug. It's sad but it is what it is, With Elyon flopping, one can only wonder about the future of BlueHole Studios.

    • @shadoworldsgamma
      @shadoworldsgamma หลายเดือนก่อน

Elyon also helped killing mmorpgs for BlueHole tho, a stupid move changing their original idea (everyone liked) to something that only attracted asian players... Then the last 2 years, where their xmas "events" were basically gifting someone else skins to get something back, using real money, so a pay2play event...
The removal of the alliance system to add "Civil Unrest", the "boss farming" guilds that used bots to kill every single world boss within seconds of them spawning... and some needed a whole week to respawn, memeslash being used on massive events and on pvp (even the GMs got killed with it), the "city doom" skill (yeah, it existed) that allowed someone to kill every single player within a city on a specific instance, PKing on non-pvp servers by cheating with .NET...

  • @itsukarine

I don't think the elin's looks bothered people as much as they let on, you can kinda see time and time again people largely only care enough to leave over it when they're extremely radical about loli stuff, but I can agree that the heavy elin focus on cosmetics probably was frustrating, even as someone who likes them. Other races still should've gotten needed attention for cosmetics and stuff so people have more incentive to stick around, but regardless I think elins did more for the game than took away, and Elyon's state should make that pretty clear that it was an important part of the formula.
One of the things that actually killed my interest years ago was the grind before they simplified much of it. Playing through the story in 2013 just before and after f2p was kind of miserable, those grinds aren't ever fun, so I never had a chance to get to enjoy that endgame content that kept most people involved in the game for up to a decade. I completely agree with optimization though, my PC at the time was running an AMD 7870 and it was pathetic that it struggled and made a lot of it unfun. There's so much squandered opportunity in TERA and I hope if they go for TERA2, they get things right this time.

Let me tell you something about the "Lag" in TERA. I started playing on Day 1 and there was no Lag to be seen. Could play in high settings and everything was nice. Lack of content and or Updates + Gameforge's disgusting lootbox system for in game costumes made me abandon TERA. Years later I decided to try the game again, only to see that it's been completely changed Lore wise (starter island gone etc etc), that there were tons of stuff in the ingame store and the game lagged a ton ! So the devs must have done something to the game that started the whole lagging in the first place. A shame, I loved that game when it first came out. The Races, the world, a shame that Korean Companies don't know how to handle an mmo for western markets.

I wish they had of embraced tera proxy and made it part of the game. It would have cost them nothing to do so and cost them everything not to, a decision that made no sense and confounds me to this day. It's just confusing, why they didn't do this? shouldn't they be a company motivated by a desire to make money? If there is an issue with their game and someone else solves it for free, and offers to give it to them for free, why wouldn't they accept it in an effort to offer the best possible game experience, encouraging adoption of their game and maximising profits.
Speaking as someone who plays from Australia, I was absolutely shocked when I tried out tera proxy, my DPS from slayer more then doubled and that was just with the free SP system. A friend of mine who also plays slayer and has a very low ping showed me his skill execution speed was only slightly higher then mine. It was lovely no longer having to have American players carry me and being able to compete on a level playing field.
It annoys me that a purely rational decision making process driven exclusively by a desire to maximise profits would have saved this game.
Even now, why force shutdown? Seriously, why force shutdown? I get they might not want to develop tera any more, but why actually tell the publishers they can no longer publish the game?
They could say, "we're done and there will be no more updates ever", they would still be able to make a small amount of money from licensing and it would reduce the impact to the companies reputation from this heartless decision.
I will have to watch my 10 year old characters cease to exist and there is nothing I can do to save them; all because of an irrational (non revenue maximising) decision that makes no sense.

    • @misakianimated
      @misakianimated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Exactly! Imagine someone offering you a free spare tire but not only do you not take it but you then burn your own car.
That's how it felt watching BlueHole handle the proxy issue.
I myself still don't understand why they had to completely kill the game, some speculate that it has to do with the "TERA 2" leak but Krafton's financial reports show Bluehole in a massive des, and the studios future itself is under question...
Only time will tell at this point.

It's really sad to see what became of this game. I can still remember how excited I was back in 2011 when I seen the first game trailer and the happiness when I first logged in. It's one of my very favorite mmo's.
And to be honest I had no idea that proxy drama affected online that much. I certainly noticed that something IS going on that times but didn't connect that facts. I didn't knew that proxy was essential for so much people.
From my side as a person who played with ping 140-160 since 2014 and managed to have a good dps and evades on warr/gunner/priest I always wondered why people say TERA isn't playable with ping higher than 40 but now after my husband hosted a local server and I experienced 16 ms I start to understand.
Also I want to mention that pvp died long ago and a lot of people quit the game because of that. Plus game had a long story with rights issues since TERA is a stolen code. From what I know devs had a lot of problems because of that. And to be honest I don't think that BlueHole/Krafton are good developers either. More than that: I totally hate them now. Feels like they are too lazy to care about any of their games or they don't have any experience in game development (but again let's remember good examples like FFXIV. Devs shut the game down and then reworked it to the state when game became one of the best in mmo market). But to give the credit when credit is due they had enough courage to acknowledge that they screwed up and shut the game down. Of course I'm grateful that they developed TERA (especially when I know that if they wouldn't took the code from NC the game would have stuck in development hell) and I know that game development is a really hard work, but I will never understand why they decide to waste it's potential...
Thank you for video and sorry for a long comment

Played Tera on NA for ~7 years, Best MMORPG EVER
i had every single class max lvl, and every class - Elin, because they are such a cuties, how can't you agree with this?, and it can't be a reason coz most of players played as Elins as well.
Look at Genshin, (i know, bad comparison, but..) - it have a lot of advertising from every single hole. Costumes? you need to pay for good skins in genshin, but here in Tera i had almost every single cosmetic i want only by grinding hard modes and exchanging gold to items from store from EMP sellers(spend 0$ in game), of course i like it really, but was it good for game?
I think if helping new players to get in the game gived some nice reward and if you can't resell some good costumes - Tera would have atleast a bit more money to stay alive longer.
Oh, and after Enmasse created own launcher i had some error that didn't let me play game, i don't blame Enmasse, - it was a really nice and amazing time that i enjoyed so much💗
After Tera every single MMORPG looks so boring or bad

This is my personal opinion(not a popular one) and I disagree with a lot of the reason stated in the video.
What I believe killed the game is:
    - they removed old content. They should have kept and rebalanced them.
-The power gap between gears became larger.
-the game became too focus on gear upgrade instead of player' mastery to clear content. Example, we could literaly clear mchm without having any armor upgraded back in the days. Gear became mandatory to clear content. Hence +15 enhancement instead of +12.
-No more armor account share. This was a bit one for me cause I used to play every classes.
-The game got totally broken with brawler. Literally not a tank but a front faceroll DPS. This is people' fault with their complains.
-Speaking of the community, the dev did listen to them. Tire of chasing BAM?? ok we gona make all BAM standstill against tanks. DG too hard??? ok we gona nerf them(I bet most people doesn't even know which DG got nerf). Now we got a faceroll dps meter elitist game and not a action combat game.(main reason why I quit the game).
I believe all of the above happened because of monetization, unknowledgeable players, and mobile game industry.
The game only survived this long not because of the gameplay(which has long been dead) but because of the people simping for the elin race. This is just my opinion but I do believe it is correct.

    • @nucbkalolllagka

      mobile game industry
this is the main reason for the closure. They failed or didn't want to make a mobile version of Tera. А new generation of players are accustomed to a completely different monetization and mechanics

    • @guyverhw4780
      @guyverhw4780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nucbkalolllagka are you serious about playing Tera on mobile??? Do you even know why Tera "was" popular in the first place??
I mean I could be wrong (pretty sure i am right thu) but the true action combat was the reason the game was popular in the first place. True action combat isn't gona happen on mobile. Maybe who knows in some distant future. But as of now, it's not even close to reach quality of "good" PC gameplay.
Yes, the game died because of the mobile industry but not for the reason you stated. The game did not need what you call "a new generation of player" to survive,(meh, I would not even consider them gamer. Maybe simps??lol). The company probably just didn't want to spend the money to develop the game when they know they can make a cheap mobile game and potentially make more profits. Hence why they did try to make a Tera mobile game and the PC game got totally turn into a simp simulator game(did it also became P2W??). As a result, the main population of player who were playing for the gameplay, like myself, quit the game. It's simple as that but this is just my opinion with no proof,

Tera was incredible, but ahead of its time. It demanded low ping, and as you said, those living closer to the servers had a vast advantage.
Started playing this game in 2013, right when it was released as F2P, and stopped in 2017, having more than 50 active characters in both EU and NA. I remember the struggle to beat Shandra Manaya in 2013. It had been the most difficult dungeon I've ever seen in a game and demanded impossible concentration.
Later, I remember myself waking up four to five hours earlier in the morning (before work), just to catch the times for FW battlegrounds in the US, where it was most competitive.
Having no idea there was a proxy tool available that reduced the lag, I was mostly playing in the US for the last year with 200ms ping. In the EU, my latency was 30-40ms, yet in PVP, the top players had way lower, with some even lower than 10ms. The difference was vast in combat against these players.
Frankly, Tera has had the most intelligent combat system I’ve seen in an MMO, yet the worst publisher in the EU that damaged the popularity of the game. En Mass wasn't that bad, at least for as long as I was playing. I remember the Valkyrie cheat being widely used, but it was during my final days in the game, and I had already decided that that cycle had ended.

man.. it's so sad how it all boils down to pure greed , they just didn't care enough to invest money to improve the game and when they finally decided they had to do something about it, it was already too late. I will never forget the memories of enjoying Tera with a friend I made around 2016, one of the best years of my gaming life, played Tera for months while recovering from a back injury.

Bluehole worked for almost ten years to kick players ou of the game. I still don't understand the constant lack of brain the developers have, when they remove content, without any reason. The island of dawn, starting area is TERA, it has to be there, it has to stay there, removing it was an expression of disrespect to all players. and they continued this all the way to the final shut down. And with the years the devs vcontiniously added new bugs to the game, in some areas i could't play because of constant crashes. It felt like there were 2 groups of devs. the ones that had great ideas and made an unforgettable experience of TERA, and the others who constantly tried to sabotage and corrupt all positive game experience.

but it is when they removed alliance than tera was doomed
but tera was killed by elyon, elyon sucked tera money and like elyon flop it drag tera to sink
so blue hole studio could invest in tera to improve it, instead they waste tera money on fail game like elyon and eventually will lost both game in same year and go bankruptcy by incompetency

There is also other problems like adding something to delete it few months after. Destroying leveling experience, no more cooperative event (Nexus), p2w enchantment with sealing parchment to reach +20. Lack of good apparence with always troll outfits. The game was very very good in 2012 but everything goes wrong after 2015 and Alliance system supression. Alliance was good but even that was spoiled with territory instances making the open world more and more useless, and so GvG less interesting. They deleted territory election for guild, sky castle later. Everything that was possibly interesting has been erase...

I first played Tera online in 2017 on the ps4 but I stopped playing because my ps4 stopped working. And now I finally got a new PlayStation just to find out they're shutting down the servers. Can they at least let us play off-line version of Tera I don't want to see this game just mocking me in the download area of my library. I mean I spent at least two hundred hours playing the game with my level 60 elin berserker and flying red pig mount and mini Cooper. Helping out people with raid bosses and the closest this to WOW on PS4.

As a lifelong EverQuest player, I will never really be able to understand people's problem with racelocking classes. If a class didn't make sense lorewise for a race, it wasn't a problem to not have access to it. Why should the posh High Elves with a distaste for everyone in their inherent feeling of superiority not have an organised clergy of holy priests dedicated to their goddess, rather than follow their "Lesser" cousins, the Wood Elves example by becoming one with nature as a Druid? Or lord forbid, taking after the feral races like Ogres and lizardmen by having shamans? It just always made sense. And I know, fair is fair.
There can always be outliers, like a Danish Shaolin monk IRL or something, but the question is whether it's worth potentially sacrificing immersion by running the chance of everyone choosing to run snowflake combinations like a highly academic goblin, or what have ya? Personally, I'd just prefer it to be confined to the roleplaying part of MMORPG, or perhapse have a prefered set of skills and carreres by assorted races, but having them be able to go any road they like, but with a penalty for being raised in a society that doesn't support and teach the ways you've chosen.
Not a huge negative, you should still be able to outshine others if you truly master your craft, but not without extra effort. Like an aspiring competitive shooter that lives in a country that has banned guns, compared to the average swiss that can just go shooting in their spare time.

I think it's also the phasing out of the vision maker gear I remember a lot of friends quitted when gear shifted to stormcry gear which needed a lot of money to upgrade the gear unlike vision maker gear you can infinitely grind feedstock to upgrade gear whereas stormcry gear needed the 150k recipes just to craft the materials and making the game slowly transition to p2w. if you ask any tera veteran they would all prefer vision maker gear not this crap mythical gear p2w the game has become now or what it has become.

It may be 3 months ago, but the community really has shown how much better they are at developing Tera. Just recently "player AIs" have been created by one dev. Innovative and neat. Menma is adding new faces. Basically, in the community's hands Tera has actually improved. Now if they could bring back certain features it would really be complete. I even expect the community to port the client to UE4 or even 5. The community is so far above how the game was handled by Bluehole/Enmasse/etc. Given time they will polish, add systems, and improve the game in ways that the "owners" never did. This is one of those cases where community curation has been a boon.

Dude. I never really got the chance to make Tera my own. I got the chance to play when I was a teen thanks to my dad letting me use his computer. I never had my own computer growing up, but when I could play, I did. I remember it pretty well. I made it to max level at one point. I kind of just rushed it while I could. My character was a Warrior class. The one with two swords if I remembered correctly. Anyway, I may have made it to max level, but I didn't know what I was doing. This was my first ever MMO that I gave my full attention to, and I had no idea what end game content was really all about. So, when I made it to max level I just hung around. I would do pvp for fun, help newer players with quests and leveling and, even help out newer players who were getting bullied by higher level players. All fun but, it didn't last long at all. I think overall I got to play for just about a year and it was around the time the game just came out. Eventually I would leave the game and, gaming altogether because of life and by the time I finally hit a point in my life that I could have my own computer well... The game was dying and, it eventually did.
I miss this game a lot. I remember wanting to come back to the game so bad! "One day! Just one day I'll be back" is what I would tell myself. I had no idea that MMOs could die. I mean it makes sense when you think about it. Of course they die. Eventually they all will. Sigh. I never realized those few months playing were not just my best times with this game but, unfortunately my last. By the time I came back hardly anyone played, my characters were long gone as the game was dying, and well MMO gaming was just dying all together. I miss playing with my friends... I hope I'll find another MMO that can spark those fun aspects of an MMO. I don't know how to explain it but the current MMOs just don't feel the same. Maybe I'll never experience those times again. I am much older and will continue to get older. I can feel myself losing interest in gaming all together.
If you read all that I'm sorry lol! I hope you guys are having fun out there and staying safe!

As a beta tester and fellow veteran, I have to disagree that these reasons are what killed Tera. Optimization is probably the biggest in the list, but even then, Tera held strong for a while. Also, I wanted to point out that relying solely on the Steam player count isn't accurate to do a wholistic population count of Tera, since many people (myself included) used the stand alone non-Steam launcher.
IMO, what ultimately killed Tera is the lack of any meaningful content updates, the changing of EME to Gameforge, and Elyon. It was pretty obvious that starting back in 2018, Blue Hole had started to shift development focus away from Tera. This is evident in the fact that the content updates just got lazier and lazier. Also, many of the updates pushed the game in directions that players simply did not want. Also, any time publishers are changed that require some sort of account migration, you're guaranteed to lose a good chunk of your casual playerbase, since most people either don't care enough to migrate, or fail to migrate within the allowed window, thus losing their characters. Finally, the failure of Elyon undeniably forced Blue Hole to shift even more focus away from Tera in an attempt to save Elyon. The developers simply aren't big enough, nor do they receive enough money to continue supporting Tera while also trying to make Elyon profitable.

I feel it, as a veteran who played since 2013 i left tera in 2017 because of all of it and more, the game was baddly optimized and it got worse after the Elin reaper's update, the game could handle nexus population normally but after reapers it wont (with much much less people than it used to have) and will send you game crashes always because of the flashy effects and animations and basically that class haha, i remember they introduced reapers when the alliance patch was in his hightest and they just ruined alliances for me, could not play any more during the alliance conflicts, i had to use .ini file tweaks and other programs to let only tera use my pc resources /internet and not fall into pieces during my gameplay, my years in tera were full of drama, i remember when a ton of eu players came to NA because gameforge was being trashy and they force eme to lock the game for the region and not allow any external IP's play the game unless they already have an account

wtf, what's with this hate for lolis? I came checking up the video because I only recently found out Tera sunset and wanted to get some takes, but this take of the OP's really irked me. I picked up the game way back in around 2013 or so, and one of the common complaints at the time about the localization was the censoring of the Elin customs. I really hated that it, it was one of the reasons I slowly turned away from the game. Otherwise, the combat seemed very fun and the graphics were also great. I freaking hate censoring. Sigh.

many years i spent playing tera, i moved on for a lot of reasons, enmasse being enmasse, the game going stale, "events" just being discounts in the cash shop, when the publishers lost the love for the game thats when the players lost interest. i still remember when Highwatch and Velkia was filled with people just afk, talking, duelling one and other, such a shame the game is a graveyard now but like you said, it was on life support for the longest time and no one was willing to try and recover it...

On the topic of publishers, Enmasse was just terrible: Incompetent customer support, rude mods, computer iliterate admins, and people in charge of the company who couldn't even list the 5 forces of Porter (a required discipline in Business School).
One day, after 5 years playing they suspended my account for 2 weeks for getting a 20m transfer from my bf. They said I bought gold. Lmao. First, look at the logs? Second, like I would need to buy measly 20m on a 5 year old account with more than a billion in bank. Get real.
In 2014 they fired someone from HR who I know personally and is a wonderful and competent lady who was trying to increase retention among the top talents of the company (because everybody was quitting and going to Epic Games) by increasing salary and eliminating crunch time. Top brass didn't like that so they got rid of her.
I've heard some stories from her that would make a lawyer puke.
The day Enmasse closed I wasn't surprised. Since then I made my own Tera server for me and my friends and it's the best experience we've ever had.

I'm still sad about Tera shutting down. It was a game I always came back to, the only MMORPG I've come back to over the years, even though I've tried many. None hit quite the same as Tera, nor was remotely as fun to play.
I had played my since 2012 (on NA), but was most active back in I think 2018-2019, during the Heroic gear phase (not sure what patch that was). I had to quit for a long time when I had my daughter but came back to it when I could. I loved playing my Castanic Gunner, my guildleader used to call me "natural gunner" lol. I would often out DPS other gunners of better gear (though I can't really compare to the top players like Won or something). Even though my first love in the game was my Casti Mystic. I couldn't play any heavily ping reliant classes for a while though, because where I lived for a time had really poor internet speed, so I didn't want anyone dying on account of that. Even though my DPS suffered a lot (even with the use of Proxy) my guildmates were still awesome and let me come on dungeons, and would pick my dead body up off the floor when I had bad lag spikes lol.
Anyway... I loved this game. Even though I wasn't around for its entirety, it will always be one of my favourite games. Lots of fond memories... I feel like there was so much that was mishandled with TERA even aside from what you mentioned here. Part of me feels that adding more expansions/content other than just more dungeons would have done a lot for the game too. Many other games of its type that have kept going for many years, usually add other things to do than just the grindy kinda stuff. While I loved the grind in Tera to some extent, since to me it didn't really feel grindy due to the nature of the gameplay, I still would have appreciated other things to do. So much missed potential. I also wish they'd eventually brought the new classes to the rest of the races too. I didn't really touch Ninja or the others because I just didn't care for the Elin aesthetic. I did play Reaper a lot for a while because it was fun to play but idk, I just couldn't stick with it. Castanic was my favourite race, I'm just glad it got Gunner which was my favourite DPS.
Great video. I had no idea how deep things went with the Proxy controversy, and while I'd heard of "memeslash" I didn't realize just how bad it was. I only really used Proxy to help with ping issues and other QOL stuff. Such a shame about the whole thing... shunning the fans who worked for free to fix their game was such a wrong move.

One last thing I wanted to add that I think also contributed: They made fights a lot easier than they once were, in dungeons and especially in the overworld BAMs and whatnot. I remember spending quite a lot of time fighting them back in the day, it was great. :) But I'm one of those people that enjoys the journey, so I missed the old level-up content to begin with. I wish that games didn't boost new players to endgame so quickly as the game ages. I know they want to gain and retain new players, but (and especially) in Tera's case, it could and often did gimp new players' learning experience.

Rn I'm playing on Tera Starscape. Used to play tera back in the day when it became free to play, didn't know about proxy untill like 2019, before proxy I used to be an on and off players, cause everything felt sluggish and I managed to only level up my priest to max level (and only priest was playable for me cause it didn't depend on ping on earlier year dngs as much). Even now I love Tera's combat. But with proxy I enjoy it even more. Them removing content and race locking certain classes were my 2 biggest concerns. Ofc the races that get more classes will be played more. But why make everything available for elins, but not other races? Like Barakas didn't get any new classes, prolly cause they were bulky af and it would be hard to animate their skills to look as appealing and flashy probably. But other races? Baraka Brawler would have been fun tho ngl.

Bluehole just doomed the game in every region. The biggest quit wave I witnessed was when masterwork alkahest was removed from LoT/KN as a farming method and they introduced an overpriced box bought with vanguard credits and even that box was rng. You could spend hours farming the limited per day credits to get like 5 mwa which we all know wasn't even enough to think about enchanting. Honestly this is when CS/FW battlegrounds started having 20 minutes waiting time in queue and open world was just empty. Zawahide spots being empty was such a strange thing to see back then. They had pure gold in their hands and they just pissed on it and us simultaneously. At least mt the dream is a decent private server for anyone looking to experience the game again

feel like this almost totally misses what killed TERA. Back in like 2016 or 2017 BHS/Krafton went into "restructuring" which meant they were done delivering updates to the west for a whole year. During this hiatus, almost as soon as it started actually, TERA's competitors in the KR market, Blade and Soul and Black Desert Online, finally released westward and ate its lunch. TERA never recovered from this, its servers were a ghost of their former selves past that point. Logging in even after they reopened their doors, you could feel that this stupid decision had dealt a death blow. What followed was first consolidation of NA servers to two, then consolidation between NA/EU markets moving it all to gameforge, then the shutdown. They picked the worst possible time to abandon their western markets.

Funny thing is before the last gear patch, the game was very newcomer friendly. I came back and actually had some hope in the game seeing the influx of new players who could thrive, and veterans can help them through low level dungeons that actually gave good amount of gold.
Then the new patch came out. Those new people couldn't handle the changes and quit.
I would play Tera if they rolled everything back to the visionmaker days where the pvp wasn't thrown out the window, the world had quests and a point with factions and junk, there was nexus so we had a large daily event to attend, there was weird voting thing where a guild could control an area and there weren't any genderlocked classes. If the developers weren't so adament in just throwing away the world and systems they built every patch I think the game could have gone a very different direction. I did love the simplified rotations and high damage numbers but it's not worth destroying pvp over.

Tera had some of the best boss mechanics i had ever experience in action combat RPG games and, sadly, i have not encountered anything like them outside of Tera. My favourite was definitely Manaya's second phase in MCHM. I'm just glad i got to experience some good boss fights for about 5 years. It was a shame though, that the experience was kinda toned down by screen stutters and ping issues (although the injector solved some of the ping issues, it caused others like desyncs).

TERA is still pioneer of true action combat comparing into modern MMO or Mobile today.
Few point that what I think make TERA closed :
    1- Extreemely hard learning curve.
    2- Pay to win monetization.
3- Insanely excessive grind and gear progression.
4- Implemented `invicible` competitive game-play in players which lead to `Elitist` behavior among the players.
5- TERA implemented some of weird concepts of difficulties in dungeons, and some of them led to the separation of the community.
    1- Extremely hard learning curve.
A few of classes extremely hard to `optimize` because they need extremely precise skill rotation, timing, reflexes, etc. You can masterized them, but `Optimizing` them is another next level.
    2- Pay to win monetization.
TERA is implemented the concept of `tier` in the gear, and what makes it worst is they make `multiple-level-tier` that will cost you a fortune to optimized your gear.
3- Insanely excessive grind and gear progression.
If you play TERA for free, you will paid it for your life. The cost of gear progressing is around 6 to 8 months with 10+ hours game play in every day. after you reach the grind, the game will update with another new gear that will force you to grind another new gear, an unlimited loop of the cycle. The only way for this shortcut the process you need to pay.
4- Implemented `invicible` competitive game-play in players which lead to `Elitist` behavior among the players.
What make sick in TERA is most of the players can not even get rid the `perfectionist`. Since the tera-toolbox release people can detect your DPS, the amount of your damage contribution in party, and some of players will `judge` you how to play it well or not by this amount of DPS.
5- TERA implemented some of weird concepts of difficulties in dungeons, and some of them led to the separation of the community.
TERA implemented 2 tier of dungeon, they are same dungeon but has 2 difficulties, `normal` and `hard` difficulties. sometimes these two difficulties kinda have different mechanics even they are same dungeon, some of of `hard` dungeon takes months just to learn them without `static party member`.
This led few of players which is `elitist` to run with the same party member, mostly they creates `static party member`, while the other were scrubbing with random party member with uncertain of progress.
Tera-toolbox is one of factor of TERA `down`. Tera-toolbox exist at the first time to fix ping dependency in TERA, but later on player realizing the game is extremely hard, some of players create some `script` that was used in this tera-toolbox to optimize their gameplay. The Drama about tera-toolbox it self is all about some `scripts` that gives the advantage in the game (some of players categorized them as exploit and cheat), this drama exceeds later on in years and months, in some aspect the last developer Enmasse allowed some of script can be used, and they ban certain script that gives huge advantage.
I think the big role of the TERA `Down` is from the game developer itself, which is lacking in taking care of the community of TERA.

I have spent hours upon hours in Tera... I think from 2012 until 2015 or 16... Honestly I don't know... The last content I played more or less activly was Airship... But I never got the same feeling again, as I had when our group first time defeated Shandra Manaya in Hard mode... I didn't get to the point of Tera Toolbox, as it wasn't there yet, when I quit... We only had stuff like the Shinra-Meter to meassure our virtual D***-Size... I mean damage of course... If it was, who knows, probably would have continued, because:
I super agree with point Nr. 2... The problem was more like how unpredictable the engine was. For some people it worked well on a mediocre gaming PC... And for others, had super bad lags on high-end hardware... So in the end, you never knew what you would be getting... I was actually somewhere in between, but yeah... Performance got even worse over time and some dungeons became unplayable for me. Or more, I was kind of slowing down the group, instead of really helping.
And that brings me to Gender / Elin-Lock... Yeah. I think you are absolutely right on that one. I mean, there were some questionable costumes... But apart from that, it was the lack of choice, that made the Elin problematic. Not everyone wants to have that "Anime"-.Character... Especially as Tera was not exactly an Anime-MMORPG... I think less choice in general, but available for all the races, just like in the beginning, was the way to go.
For me what made me quit was also a lack of variety with the new stuff released. At some point all the dungeons felt kind of like a refresh of the old ones. Yeah, once in a while new mechanics were introduced, which was thrilling. But, there was also a lot of recycling... Especially of the boss-models... Especially the kumas they used a lot...
I am not sad that Tera is gone... It was a former shadow of itself. But I am also not happy. I have great memories with this game and it was the last MMORPG I ever played to that extend. It was stunning in 2012... Thanks to that great combat-system... But also to it's back then great visuals... But those were also part of it's downfall in the end... Isn't it ironic?

Menmas tera killed their reputation and did a lot of dirty stuff since this video.
There aren't any overly populated servers anymore but there are several now rather than just menma's. None of these devs are capable of making it better and people have long moved on.
But as a fellow tera veteran.... I must say, it's long past time to move on. It was a fun game, but only one game. MMO companies want their games to be like an addictive drug to swallow our lives. Literally all of them are this way. If they swallow our lives, they swallow our wallets.
I would also note there is still some support for the official console servers... As irrelevant as that actually is lol. This video was still a great watch, reminds me of all the things my friends complained about for years while I tried to make their experience more fun in whatever way I could. It was really always up to the players-- the combat alone can't save that mess, and no amount of trying to fix it with concept would ever fix the past.

I know what you mean, I wish all the private servers would have united to keep the entire PC players in one place.
These days TERA Nova seems to have strangely high numbers of players, I don't know if it's old players or Brazilians are now discovering the game.
All in all I agree, MMO Studio's wish to make their games our entire lives, and that in itself is rather wrong.
Considering Console TERA is almost at the same patch as PC (although they have decided against releasing the last (exodor) patch) perhaps we may see a PC TERA cross platform by BlueHole themselves

@@misakianimated That was old brazilian players from NA, not new players. Its not surprising, due to the fact that the nova tera at least tried to translate the game into brazilian portuguese and open server in brazil. And then, they BS 5 months with the same content, as if this private was a official server and trashy events.

It is the sad reality behind how MMOs are designed with an end game focus

Coming here after I saw the farewell video of the Tera official server. Even though I'm not a true devoted player to this game ( I only played for 2 hours so far ) but I can understand the pain of this game gone through just like Aion. If Aion began to flop because the misdirection of the dev, then this game is also share the similar situation about lacking proper care and no new content updated.
Also Gameforge is a one of the most shitty publishers I've ever seen beside Garena.

I think the main thing that ruined Tera was when they went to seasonal gear. it was nearly impossible for the average player to keep up and compete. Then when they upped the enchantment level cap they unleashed RNG hell and that alone broke many players. also the constant class re balancing was horrible. Even with all its faults and Br's I truly loved this game and to this day Im still going thru withdrawals from not playing CS. " Long live Mt Tyranus!!!!!!"

Well i played tera NA all over to EU as veteran player 7 years. And if anybody wonder why game shuted down is because tera devs wasnt listened proxy leaders which bringed so much rage and gold exploits, memeslash was joke because there were group of ppl with unlimited amount of golds obtained from gold exploits which tera devs was not capable to fix on time. I know several of them personaly and i know that all of them were obtaining monthly at least 20k euros which leads to shuting down tera, all that money were going into private pockets instead of gameforge and enmasse. For mine opinion tera is still one of best games and with little of brain they could easy reopen game with great success...
Thats mine opinion, main reason of shuting down servers... Plenty things to add more on your list but this is why..
