    I love monthly dividends for consistent budgeting each month and also like to re-invest each month. Would love a video covering a list of dividend stocks that would cover each month! ie. stocks that pays dividends Jan, April, July, Oct vs stocks that pay dividends Feb, May, Aug, Nov vs stocks that pay dividends Mar, June, Sept, Dec so that each month an investor gets dividends. Would be a super cool video idea

    One point that I've heard about ETFs with regards to holding them in a taxable account is that part of the yield can be in the form of a return on capital rather than as a dividend, especially when the underlying stocks pay out quarterly while the ETF is paying out monthly.
    My understanding is that it doesn't matter so much for TFSA or RRSP accounts, but for taxable ones you'd have to adjust your cost basis for your holdings at year end for your income tax filing.

    Companies that provide monthly dividends maybe run smoother as their cashflow is even over the 12 months. Dividend payouts are huge chunks of cash. Also keep in mind buy and sells for investors. Timing when dividends are paid should be a part of an investor's decision in timing buys and sells especially annual dividends, less so with quarterly and not as much with monthly. Love getting stock recommendations. Marc brings some long time frame experience. Brandon is so sharp that he keeps the dialogue interesting. Great work!

    Consistent monthly cash flow is key. If you can do it with quarterly div. payers, great. But I have found that its hard to find a good selection of companies to fill all three months of the quarter evenly. Monthly payers help smooth out cashflow.

  • @joygatewood8028
    @joygatewood8028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice segment & good food for thought. My thoughts follow. One reason why monthly dividend payers are good include retirees who are looking for a steady income stream. Also consider that if you calculate the present value of money vs the future value of money - you get more if you get monthly dividends. Because: Present value (PV) is the current value of a future sum of money or stream of cash flows given a specified rate of return. Future cash flows are discounted at the discount rate, and the higher the discount rate, the lower the present value of the future cash flows. If inflation rises then monthly money will become more important. You didn't cover Closed End Funds (CEFs) but many of these pay excellent monthly dividends/distributions.

    If the price typically drops to factor for dividend payouts... If you set it up to automatically reinvest the dividend back into the stock/asset then it could help with your dollar cost averaging... ...as the shares acquired will be purchased at said slightly lower price... combine this with good dividend assets poised for growth + monthly dividend payouts then you will theoretically be compounding much faster.

    • @ThinkOfYourWords
      @ThinkOfYourWords ปีที่แล้ว

      This also helps negate some of the aforementioned extra risk that some monthly dividend stocks carry, though I typically find that to not be much of an issue so long as you monitor your positions and sell off your shares of companies heading downwards.
      The trick to trading and investing is all about risk management folks... remember that !

    • @roberttaylor3594
      @roberttaylor3594 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@catterzwilson2919 I am trying a dividend capture strategy with Canadian banks. I had CM, sold a few weeks after the ex dividend, bought RY, sold a week or so after the ex dividend and the price was at the original buy price (~$117.50 or so), and bought BMO before their ex dividend. After the ex dividend, I will park the money in whatever Canadian bank stock I think is going to do well until the next round of dividends. So after the BMo dividend, I will go back and run some scenarios; would I be better off just holding CM through the whole period? Or if I sold after CM ex dividend and move to BMO? See the differences between arch 26 and ~May 10 and compare that to what I actually did; try and capture all three dividends in March-April. If this worked, the computers would be doing it all the time already, but maybe it works SOME of the time. and being in a TFSA changes the tax implications. This is not something I have done before; I tend to buy and hold for extended periods, but this seems like an interesting experiment to try. Canadian banks rise and fall somewhat in unison, so it isn't the same as switching between CM, CP, SU, and T.

      Hi Tony. I did an overview of T in the first video of this series. Not a deep dive, but a general overview. If you haven't seen it, check it out! - Marc

      I have some but be careful with some of them. Do some research before buying them.

    Pre retirement do you always re-invest your dividends?

  • @roberttaylor3594

    So, what about something like SOT.UN, which pays out ~9%...but that is 200% of their earnings in 2020. They have a good history of divid payment since 2012, but not so much the actual yield, which fell in 2019 along with the price..the payout% concerns me, but the consistency of payout is good and the fact that the price could rebound to ~6 to The Before Times price as things improve. Maybe this is for the academy discord chat area?

    Is there a unspoken expectations between us the investors and a compagnie who doesn't pay dividends to eventually start paying some in the far future?

    • @robertyoung406

      Newbie here so I might be wrong, but usually if a company starts paying a dividend, it's because they don't expect to expand anymore. So if u think a company is unlikely to continue expanding (or they are still expanding but not as rapidly), there's a POSSIBILITY (definitely not guaranteed) that they may start paying dividends.
      There might be other reasons as well, tho im not sure

    My portfolio is based on Canadian monthly dividends

    If you are able to invest enough upfront to run a monthly DRIP, then you are compounding your dividend higher each month. That is why I keep some monthly payers.

    After 40 years of reinvesting your dividends on a $20,000 initial lump sum investment in an $80/share stock that paid out a $3.20(4%) annual dividend your net worth would become $98,122.22 if being paid out quarterly.
    After 40 years of reinvesting your dividends on a $20,000 initial lump sum investment in an $80/share stock that paid out a $3.20(4%) annual dividend your net worth would become $98,649.87 if being paid out monthly.
    So you do gain a very small margin of extra profit from an investment that returns monthly instead of quarterly. The primary reason for the small discrepancy is simply that being able to get your money into the market a month or two sooner instead of every three months will have a benefit albeit a small one. Lol
