Amazing to think that this isn’t one that the Boys wrote - it sounds like them from start to finish! Kudos to Springsteen for writing such an awesome song 😊
Listening to this song right now on my phone and wanted to see what the general consensus was. I'm pleased to see that it is quite well regarded on here. In fact, I had no idea it was a Springsteen cover, but always loved the melodies. A friend told me about "Electric" a few years ago and have been listening to it religiously. How amazing that a band can create such a fantastic album after being around for 30-plus years? Kudos to the Pet Shop Boys for being so fabulously amazing!
Brilliant cover!! Only Pet Shop Boys can do so beautiful and amazing songs. I loved this song live too. Amazing and beautiful memories. I never forget.
Whenever Father Time calls last orders for music ,The Pet Shop Boys will stand tall as the greatest of them all.20 studio albums and not a dud in sight.Viva La Pet Shop Boys!!!!
I think a lot of Americans think that, because we have so little exposure now to great music. They've been consistently releasing new music for almost 30 years now...........check out their catalog. Awesome!
Pet Shop Boys seems to be one of the best bands ever, like Depeche Mode, A-ha, Tears For Fears, Bryan Adams, Roxette, Lady Gaga, Modern Talking etc. I understand, that it depends on individual musical choice, but would be pleasure if anyone from TH-cam viewers agree with me :)! Lithuania
This whole f-ing album is a killer!! their best since Behaviour, as good as Behaviour/Introspective, was waiting for the Boys to hit the highs again since 1996
как говорится - если группа, или исполнитель сумеют сделать кавер лучше оригинала ,то эта вещь по праву может считаться их собственной, как отдельное произведение. PSB просто короли каверов. Они у них очень часто получаются лучше оригиналов.
When this album first came out I did not like it at all and totally dismissed it. I've always preferred the PSB orchestral ballads and not so much their techno dance songs. But after listening to "Electric" here on TH-cam over and over I now truly appreciate it and recommend it to others all the time. Funny how PSB music can be like that, hate it at first only to love it later. Case in point with this song, I was recently on a multi-family road trip driving through I-40 in central Arizona. We'd just gotten back on the highway after a nice dinner and were in a happy mood just cruising down the interstate when my cousin's teenage son in the back seat requested a 'good highway song'. The sun was setting and the empty desert looked really pretty as it passed by so I dialed up "The Last to Die". As it played everyone seemed slightly in awe at how well it fit the setting and by how pretty it was despite the rather bleak lyrics. They were surprised when I said it was Pet Shop Boys. A Chevy Suburban full of middle-aged parents and their jaded teens raised on rap wanted me to play it over and over. What gave me goosebumps and cheered my soul was everyone in the car singing along with the "lalalalalalalalalala" parts! It was the perfect song at the perfect time and I was proud knowing I introduced a new generation of fans to PSB's.
Aqui Leonel....Sta Vitoria do Palmar....ao extremo sul do Brasil.....do mar mais ao sul....ouvindo essa magnifica música q me faz voar.....para sempre.....
@Nick BLAKENEY I've been a Springsteen fan my entire life and I prefer this version too. But he did write it... whatever one thinks of Springsteen's style of singing, he's a fantastic writer.
Hard to beat the author of the composition ever. And this Bruce. This sounds a little bit more camp than I recall at the time. Not got the author’s grit. Still great though 🎉
PSB you're covers are always brilliant! ....as they'd say on X factor brilliant song choice you've made it your own well done! "You could have a hit with this if you put it out tomorrow!"
I have three thoughts about this track. One is how the boys once again show their unassailable talent for covering a song in a way which makes that old cliché of making it "their own" ring resoundingly of truth. The second notion is that this recording further supports a feeling I've had for a long time that Springsteen is something of an heir apparent to Bob Dylan, not only because they have a very similar run-along style of lyricism, but primarily because their work never shines to me in their own voice the way it can positively glimmer in someone else's. And the third idea is that I was struck with how the song hooks me into the storyline of THE WALKING DEAD. For one, it would sound good featured in a segment of the series, but for another, and most importantly to me, the lyric (along with PSB's haunting musical arrangement) paints vivid images of the unrelentingly bleak world presented in the TV show. It may be anti-war in all of its intentions, but nearly every word suits the desolate atmosphere and the voyage into all kinds of darkness perfectly in my experience of both.
Bruce's heartfelt plea makes his version much more emotive (to me) and the real instruments let him show that he and the band are giving it all their energy (compared to other songs on the album) the musicality of which I just cant get from this one. Where's the variation around 'and I hold you' and 'darling your kings and tyrants' in pitch, timbre and volume?! Though I get that if you were a PSB kinda gal to begin with then you'd already be on board with this...
ukanian As a fan of both artists I do think melancholy singing on top of an electronic beat can be just as emotional as somebody with a more ragged voice and "real instruments". Different angles that can show different things in a song, IMO.
If you do not get emotional with the "And I hold you here in my arms as things fall apart" section, your heart is made out of stone...It immediately makes my eyes misty...
This album sounds great I can't wait to pick the CD up from my local record shop.(yep it is a mom and pop shop that still sells everything from records to CDs.)
And some people dare to call 'Electric' a flop...Dude, when artists become fucking ICONS they don't need to care about sales anymore. It's all about quality, and PSB may have surpassed themselves with this album.
"The sun it sets in flames as the city burns" - I think it's my favourite part of this song. "The last to die" is the second best song on the album "Electric" in my opinion (just after "Thursday"). It's a pity that PSB didn't play this song during their concert in Poland three days ago but despite this fact the show was great :)
Amazing to think that this isn’t one that the Boys wrote - it sounds like them from start to finish!
Kudos to Springsteen for writing such an awesome song 😊
Great cover. I love Bruce 's song but I must admit that psb's cover is brilliant. Love it 😊
Like I told my friends, this is one of springsteen's best tracks ever. Nobody agreed but now the Pet Shop Boys do.
AND better than the original 😉
Music can't get better than this tbh, PSB are geniuses.
X y para siempre eternamente agradecido a PET SHOP BOYS por su musica.MARAVILLOSOS.........
Pet Shop Boys making a cover their own once again.
Listening to this song right now on my phone and wanted to see what the general consensus was. I'm pleased to see that it is quite well regarded on here. Can't imagine the world without Pet Shop Boys
still one of my fav Pet Shop Boys albums.
Brilliant cover!! Only Pet Shop Boys can do so beautiful and amazing songs. I loved this song live too. Amazing and beautiful memories. I never forget.
That's a Bruce Springsteen song
I’m fairly certain that’s why she/he commented on it being a “Brilliant cover!!” 😉
2:20 - 2:39 is as close to electronic music bliss as it gets. Neil, Chris & Stuart, you magnificent bastards.
Whenever Father Time calls last orders for music ,The Pet Shop Boys will stand tall as the greatest of them all.20 studio albums and not a dud in sight.Viva La Pet Shop Boys!!!!
Electric is a fantastic album, can't stop listening! :)
I hadn't heard this song yet until this evening but it is beautiful and brought tears to my eyes-One of the best single covers produced
The Boss and PSB are as unlike in presentation as you could get: incredible that this works so well in both versions. 👏🏿
Truly brilliant. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this cover, is sensible and perfect!!! I love PSB ♥ Forever
Beautiful. This song just grows on you. Excellent beats.
sick🤘
Love love love the Pet Shop Boys! Awesome song!
Its not their song! Its Springsteen's
I am in love with this song. The more i listen to it the more i love it. Such a masterpiece!
Just another Bruce Masterpiece.
big Bruce fan, great version
I cant even believe this is Pet Shop boys.
Its so modern.
I think a lot of Americans think that, because we have so little exposure now to great music. They've been consistently releasing new music for almost 30 years now...........check out their catalog. Awesome!
My favorite track on the album, and one of my favorite PSB tracks of all time. Beautiful!
First time I heard it .absolutely brilliant
So wishful and beautiful. This is sad too, gets me in tears. I love and miss PSB.
So wishful & beautiful??
The song, written by Bruce Springsteen, is about post apocalyptic survival ...
YOU FUCKING YOUNG AIR/SHIT HEAD.
Tony Tafoya actually it’s clearly an anti-war song written about the Iraq war and the WMD intelligence being the mistake.
This Springsteen fan says 'great job!" This sounds great, and they picked a really well-written, underrated song by Springsteen. Two thumbs up!
Something just sticks at my throat when neil sings "as things fall apart". It gives me goosebumps.
Same here

+Andrius Stasiukynas So so so so so so TRUE also add The Bangles..
I totally agree also add Erasure
Many good candidates in your list!
I totally agree. Pet Sop Boys have always been my favourite band right from the first single.
Totally agree ... and with your inclusion of a-ha. I would add Eurythmics to that list, though.
This whole f-ing album is a killer!! their best since Behaviour, as good as Behaviour/Introspective, was waiting for the Boys to hit the highs again since 1996

I love all your beautiful words,my friend.
PSB is not of this world
This is one of my favourites. Part of the soundtrack for my life.
Wow this one is very different from Springsteen’s, but its amazing how they arranged it! Absolutely love it!
Great song... Listen to the Blade remix... Bring it to a new awesome level

Text
We took the highway till the road went black
We marked Truth Or Consequences on our map*
A voice drifted up from the radio
We saw the voice from long ago
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The kids asleep in the backseat
We're just countin' the miles you and me
We don't measure the blood we've drawn anymore
We just stack the bodies outside the door
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The wise men were all fools
What to do
The sun sets in flames as the city burns
Another day gone down as the night turns
And I hold you here in my heart
As things fall apart
A downtown window flushed with light
Faces of the dead at five (faces of the dead at five)
A martyr's silent eyes
Petition the drivers as we pass by
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Darlin' your tyrants and kings form the same fate
Strung up at your city gates
And you're the last to die for a mistake

I like some Springsteen songs and am a fan of the PSB. Sorry Bruce, Neil and Chris rock this one.

*sigh* here we go again... synthesizers are no real instruments?

Es un gran cover al adorado Bruce Springsteen.
I agree
"The sun it sets in flames as the city burns" - I think it's my favourite part of this song. "The last to die" is the second best song on the album "Electric" in my opinion (just after "Thursday").
