When I come across rounded hex holes on the end of the struts. My get out of jail is by grinding a slot in the top of the shock and slide a wee bit of 3mm flat bar in the slot, this gives me something to hold onto and, therefore stops the damper rod turning as you back off the top mount retaining nut.
Good to see you using the old style inspection lamp. In needing another two to the one I had, the new ones available just did not meet my needs, so off to eBay and there for less than cheap new ones, I bought two adjustable clamp metal caged ones. Sometimes the old ones are the best. Good job on the Fiat’s suspension.

Did you try the impact wrench on the drop link first? Sometimes you get lucky with them and they undo no problem
