Hi, thank you so much for tis video. I`m 45 years, and i would like so much to start roller skating again. as a girl I did it a lot. but today it seems much more dificult,. I can skate forward, but I don`t know how to stop or slow down, thats why Im afraid... I even am afraid to do a spin stop...
I am also 45 and just started roller skating again last month! It WAS really hard at first and my muscles are still working to catch up to what my brain remembers, but it can be done! I was doing spin stops again on my second practice - it will come back to you! I do wear knee pads and other safety gear, of course, and since it's been so long I do fall a bit. But honestly, it's the best thing I've done for myself in years. I say, as long as your health allows, DO IT! (And bring some fun music to listen to!)
@@DustyGinger "My muscles are still working to catch up to what my brain remembers" is such a good way of saying it! Really- it's that skating works so many different muscles that we barely use when just running or walking. I'm a XC runner, so I thought I'd have less of a hard time with getting sore thighs/calves... Well, I do, but my ankles are still trying to catch up 😅 I was one of those kids who skated like a bullet along my driveway with those cheap toy skates. My heart just wants to go as FAST as I remember zipping around!
Thank you so much for these videos, im getting into skating again and its so hard to know how to start and then progress but these are so helpful and makes things less intimidating
You're a fantastic teacher, Katie! Starting out has been a lot of realizing how much I'd already picked up on, back when I was a kid in my garage with cheap skates. 😊 But reviewing the actual techniques behind these skills is helping me become more aware of my poor self-learned habits! I didn't realize how much more WORK I was giving my ankles 🥲
Thank you for this video! It's been a very hot summer so I think I could only try practicing indoors, close to the fan so I won't overheat. And these things are perfect.
This was such a great video! You explain everything very clearly and I appreciate the multiple visual examples. I cannot wait to get my skates for my bday coming soon 🤗🤗
My pads are just some Amazon cheapies. I prefer smaller pads otherwise I find they get on my way. If you’re learning or intending to use the skate park or play derby definitely invest in some stronger ones like the 187’s etc. make sure the wrist guards have metal on both sides. amzn.to/3HSakG8
Thank you! For my 50th bday last month, I bought a pair of Pineapple Lollys and have been practicing in my home and at tennis courts. I’ve wanted to skate since I was a little kid, when my older cousins took me to the rink with them (because they were forced to lol) but no one would teach me. I hit a lot of floors and the walls, was overly intimidated and just quit going. Thanks for helping me live out my childhood dream. 🛼💛
Hi!! I have a problem with controlling my roll on a certain pair of skates. I like practicing stepping about in a circle like you showed in the side stepping segment. I used to be able to do it and control my roll in my Chaya Melrose Premiums, but when those broke I got a pair of moxi lollys. I feel so out of control in them, they roll so much for me! when I try to practice side-stepping, i just start rolling, same thing happens if I'm trying to step around in a circle! Please help me figure out what I can do better. Thank you for all the lessons
You likely have better more free rolling bearings now. As you step lean in the two inside wheels. That will help to anchor you. Pause for a moment and lean on those inner wheels.
Hello, I'm having trouble with the side-to-side steps. I keep rolling and haven't been able to stop from rolling while performing this or any other stepping movements. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for the great vids...
Hello, I am Korean and I am watching your video well... If you look at the American roller skate video, there is a separate jam roller skate/dancing roller skate, so you can't tell the difference.. What is the difference between the two? good day~~
Jam skating is more like breakdancing and dance skating can either be like ballroom dancing on skates or rhythm skating. If you’re just starting out a standard pair of skates is fine until you decide to concentrate on a certain discipline and get custom skates to suit.
@@Skatie Thank you for your clear answer. It is popular in Korea to roll back quickly. But I don't like it so I watched your video looking for something else.. There are many roller skating instructors here, but they don't provide systematic training like you.. Your video is very helpful to me
I love how you explained it so that everyone can understand, i love skating and i am learning how to get better
Thank you x have fun skating 💕⭐️😎🛼

Ease into it slowly, practice little and often to wake up those muscles. I have lots of videos to help. You’ve got this xx
@@Skatie your videos have been super helpful! Your breakdown on how to learn things is the best I’ve seen on TH-cam yet. Thank you so much!

Oh I was also wondering what brand are your pads? I like the smaller style but can't seem to find the right ones.
Been skating again for about 3 months. Your videos have meant I have improved a lot despite not having a lot of space to practice. Thank you.

@@Skatie cool ty! Yes I plan on wrist guards, elbow and knee protection. I'm even eyeing those butt pad shorts just in case 😄

Press on the inside edges, think of angling your feet slightly into a plow stop position can help too.
