"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is also about the mother's mental health during and after her pregnancy. She has some degree of pre & postpartum depression which causes her to hate the experience of pregnancy/birth and keeps her from bonding with her infant son. I say this as a mother who experienced postpartum depression after a very difficult pregnancy and birth. He is 18 now and I still have guilt about those first few months after he was born. I took care of his physical needs but remained emotionless for fully three months after birth. The unplanned pregnancy of my daughter, when he was three months old, is what rebooted my hormones and snapped me out of the depressive hell that imprisoned me. Thank god the second pregnancy was easy and there was no postpartum depression, even though it was a traumatic birth.

Melancholia had an awesome and positive ending from the perspective of the main character, it reminds me of the first 6 books of Chronicles of Tomas Covenant.
The only book I ever read from that was “White Gold Wielder”. Which I thought was good. Read it when I was a kid. So I never understood why no one ever tackled “The Thomas Covenant Chronicles” in film or a mini series on cable.
You've added a good movie like 'Nightcrawler'. That is a pretty decent movie and any normal person could finish it. However the movie that is the most difficult to finish, 'A Serbian Film', has not even been mentioned here. Whoever is reading this comment, I challenge you to sit and watch that movie in one single attempt.
I have seen A Serbian Film in its entirety and I would recommend that no one ever watch it. Even as a film purely intended to shock, horrify and disgust, it offers nothing else. There is no deeper meaning. I was essentially forced to watch it and consider it my life's mission to keep unsuspecting innocents away from that God-awful mess. However, I don't mind telling people what it's about.
I am not a horror person, in fact I'm a certified scaredy cat, but I wanted to know what the deal was with Hereditary. To be honest, apart from THAT moment, I found it rather stupid. All this tension winding up and then I thought the ending was a complete let down. However I'm definitely avoiding some of the films on this list - I'm looking at you, Babadook.
I’m like you Karen, as a lifelong horror fan I didn’t know what the big deal was. Sat through it fine. It was disturbing in what the other people were trying to do to the family. “The Babadook” was another one, where I feel the same as you did with this movie, I mean I had to wonder what the big deal was about it. Nothing really out there….to me anyway. Go & watch it.
Damn. Glad "Enter the Void" was on here... That movie messed with my head so thoroughly. I watched it back when I still smoked weed - by myself, in the dark, on the Fourth of July several years ago. The curtains on the door and the windows were lighting up from fireworks outside. I've watched a lot of weird movies - movies like this are my favorite. But for whatever reason, that movie really messed with me and stuck in my head - whether it was drugs, my environment at the time, my state of mind or whatever... There have been other movies that have pulled me in like that but, off the top of my head, the only other ones I can think of are "Altered States" and "Eraserhead" - also, Salvador Dali's "The Andalusian Dog" - that has to be the weirdest movie ever made. Those are all kind of like if you could record my nightmares and make them into movies - not overtly scary but, gut-wrenchingly strange/weird/odd/off-putting. Melancholia was really good too - and I've been wanting to watch Midsommar but haven't had the chance yet.
Thought for sure 2018's Suspiria would've made the list. As one reviewer stated, "Feel Free to Bail When Suspiria Turns Into a Satanic Thom Yorke Music Video."
I would recommend Ari Aster's films for any horror fanatic or cinephile. They're almost like twisted fairy-tales and if you're really into artistic and original films you'll love them. Definitely very horrifying for the first week or so after you watch it, but you appreciate the art more and more as the shock wears off. His movies are the only ones that have ever affected me that deeply in that many different ways.
Great list! I've seen a couple of these and they were definitely worth it. I would add Pan's Labyrinth and High Tension. Now I can make a new list of movies to watch. Thanks looper!
Midsommar's greatest achievement is creating a protagonist who begins the film sympathetic and ends it as a pathetic embodiment of spiteful insecurity. Never before has a film's protagonist squandered the amount of audience goodwill that the lead of Midsommar did.
@Levi Ackerman The Descent, Hellraiser, Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Haunting In Connecticut, The Grudge (Old one, not the reboot), The Ring, Drag Me To Hell and some others. Can't think the name of yet haha. There are so many. Also love the older Stephen King Movies. Not all of them, but most.
I don't think I've seen another film where I was simultaneously repulsed and in total awe as I was when initially seeing the uncensored version of Enter the Void.
I just watched it recently and some images from that movie keep replaying in my head and I hate it! I wanted to add I hate the images but loved the movie.
Rarely do I get frightened by scary movies but Hereditary haunted me for weeks. I kept waking up in the middle of the night for no reason and my mind would immediately start thinking about the sister clicking her tongue and there were times I could swear I saw someone standing in my room. *The scene* that really freaks everyone out was terrible for me but what tortured me and made me feel so sick was how the brother didn't stop or call the cops or anything. Obviously he was in intense shock but his reaction freaked me out the absolute most.
Mother I started watching just because it was on Netflix. I got to the first baby part and had to pause it and take a moment of "what the actual feck is this movie?!" Then the second baby part happened and the allegory clicked in my brain. It's honestly one of my favorite films of all time since and I've watched it more times than I care to admit.
@@te9591 i watched it earlier this year not knowing anything about it at all and it kept me looking it was people with me who didnt want to watch it but couldn't leave its a really good movie to me its worth watching for horror fans.
The wars in recent years have shown us horrors that left us numb to movie horror. The slashing of man's throat by Mad dogs of ISIS, the burning of pilot the wars in Syria with dead, wounded and traumatized children. Mad Lady Albright declaring that Children killed not big deal. Truly monsters exist and movies merely portray what exists.
agreed, i was more disturbed by the way the guests treated Jennifer Lawrence's character (the Mother) throughout the film than by the gruesome events that ensued in the last half of the film.
The Beast Within was seriously disturbing and scary as hell, especially for a young child. I finally watched the whole movie years later as an adult, and still disturbing, but an amazing movie in the end.
Most recent head scratcher for me was "The Killing of s Sacred Deer". Good performances all around...but, creep factor and "WTF?" moments were definitely on display.
The most disturbing movie I’ve ever seen has to be The Nightingale (2017). Don’t get me wrong, its an AMAZING movie & i love it but i dont think I could ever rewatch it. So many moments were just so heavy I barely made it through
Melancholia was such a weird and questioning movie to me, i mean, I think the title represents the whole feel and setting of the movie. But I just kept wanting to know why the hell everything was happening the way they did, I just had too many questions. It was so long to watch but I watched the whole thing.
Mother was so disturbing n hard for me to watch. I will NEVER EVER watch that movie again. I didn’t like the feeling it left with me at the end and the nightmares that followed for about a week
Super Dark Times. Its more of drama but it scared me to the core! The synopsis is something like "tragic accident causes friends relationship to be rocky" its so much more than that
i usually find that movies based on true accounts or movies that are based on possible real events are more disturbing than horror or science fiction movies. 4 movies that come to mind are 1956 "the bad seed', 1967 "in cold blood", 2002 "unfaithful", and one i just watched the other day 2019 "obsession".
These are the kind of films I like , not action , not gore , but suspence thrillers. Even sci fi I can do , but horror has to be twisted and layered. This is a great list you have here , thx. The mother in the bobaduk played in the girl with the pearl earring.
I watched Midsommar with my ex boyfriend while we were both tripping on acid. I can’t explain the emotions I felt watching the movie. We broke up days after we saw the movie and I just 👁👄👁
Hagassuza is a truly beautiful work of art. The backgrounds add to the emotional turmoil and lack thereof for the characters. We don't just have the woods and beautiful mountains, but the putrid swamp conveys its own painterly space. Let's just say there are no liminal spaces here. Melancholia was a great choice of movie for Dunst. The action is carefully choreographed and appropriated into 3 acts. The grim subject of the movie reveals the characters' game of chicken: who will last longest before the end? I think the premise is brilliant and the acting just right. Dunst is so beautiful--the perfect young woman full of promise who is our "hero" if we can call her that.
Wow this list was amazing I actually have seen most but some I have never heard of which is awesome it’s so rare for a movie list to Be so versatile can’t wait to watch the three I have never heard of or seen!! 😊
Complete bs on the Babadook being scarier than the Exorcist . My parents saw it in the theater and said people were hysterically crying, throwing up and running out of theaters. To this day that movie gives me nightmares and I never dream of scary movies. Remember that kid was stabbing herself in the crotch WITH A CRUCIFIX swearing "F! ME!!" Her head swiveling, her levitating off the bed,the "help me" on her stomach, how she talked to her mother, her language was so vulger and THAT CRABWALK DOWN THE STAIRS! All terrifying to the senses.
"Raw," absolute gem 100% 👍 "Under the Skin," is such a boring rubbish movie. Effects are not worth the pain of S. Johansson for that length of time. It's not slow burn, it's embers. "Babadook" was sad not scary.

Best comment I've read all day. Yep a complete overblown snooze fest. Movie could have been 10 minutes long.
Well, _Melancholia_ certainly WAS a difficult movie to finish, because it was damn near impossible *not* to fall asleep while watching!
Dont avoid it because it's scary (it's not) Avoid it because it's dumb.
The music in sinister is masterful as well, as is the creepy mixture of the children's voices calling out numbers (a genuine mystery for 50 years)
Boards of Canada
@@jjlwis Who in turn sampled it from the "Conet Project " CD of shortwave numbers stations :)
Totally agree with Hereditary being picked here. It blew me away on so many levels. I was so invested from beginning to end.
It started off okay but that clusterfuck of an ending ruined it. I will never understand why do many people kiss that movie's ass.
@@englishatheart Just wondering what about the ending you didn’t like? I ask cuz I really liked the ending. It creeped me right out.
Thought for sure 2018's Suspiria would've made the list. As one reviewer stated, "Feel Free to Bail When Suspiria Turns Into a Satanic Thom Yorke Music Video."
This is a solid list . Tbh , titling as such kind of undermines all that these films are . With that being said , well done .
Omg I will never understand why babadook is scary. I'm a freaking wimp and its honestly sooo boring. I don't get it
Maybe that’s why it doesn’t strike u as scary. Cuz u don’t understand how scared u should be?
I haven’t even finished the video but I knew Hereditary had to be on this list. It’s undoubtedly one of the best films I’ve EVER seen.
It’s great.
Damn. You must not have seen a lot of movies. Hereditary is one of the most boring movies ever
What’s the difference between the uncensored and ven
Good list. I also found the movie "Elephant" quite haunting.
I couldn’t believe Hereditary!! I did not see that coming at ALL. Loved it.
Omg Mother was so uncomfortable and the end!!!! Jesus.
The house that Jack built is another one
Matt Dillon...yeah that's a good one!
Uma Thurman had it coming
I could never understand as to why The Babadook is scary or disturbing, it sucked for me.
Midsommer left an impression on me and was one of the most original movies I have ever seen.
I need to watch it but it looks really grim.
@@te9591 i watched it earlier this year not knowing anything about it at all and it kept me looking it was people with me who didnt want to watch it but couldn't leave its a really good movie to me its worth watching for horror fans.
@@Tumbo2012life looks very similar to Wicker Man which I liked.
Great Video 👌
Awesome Video 👌
I’m surprised the Fly didn’t make this list. It was so weird and disturbing and I am forever scarred haha😂
I hated Midsummer. I couldn't take her cryiny and moaning. It was overkill, she sounded more like she was giving birth than sad.
The Paperboy was a film I could barely see to the end and have NEVER attempted to watch it ever again!
Mother was just so much for me I was so confused on what to get mad at because there was too much
agreed, i was more disturbed by the way the guests treated Jennifer Lawrence's character (the Mother) throughout the film than by the gruesome events that ensued in the last half of the film.
Excellent compilation!! Thanks.
That's a lot of ads for almost 17 minutes.
I watched that about 2 days ago and man that's one weird movie.
Plus it has the hottest man ever in it ... C Farrell
@@TheSpelledMilk Bullseye!!!
I have never seen any of these. Thanks for the advisory looper. I will attempt to watch babadook, my dad says it is a good movie.
It is good, and of the films on this list I've seen, it is by far the easiest to get through.
Really not scary, it is very sad.
The Babadook is scary and a great movie. Especially once you understand it.
Your dad knows what’s up.
You've made a grave mistake. Out of all the wonderful films listed here and you pick Babadook?
This is a very well put together list
Spring breakers ..... compared to an orange clockwork..... ok .....
Lol "an orange clockwork"
We broke up days after we saw the movie and I just 👁👄👁
Wow
Thanks for the tip, just added them all on my "must watch movies" list. 👍
Mother is so bad that it broke the director and Jennifer Lawerence up.
8mm was a film that is good but you only need to see once that film was to disturbing for me
Yes!!! I had this movie watched it maybe twice it is great but very tough to watch
I would love for you to add Suspiria. That movie really creeped me out.
Entirely too many ads. I will never be watching your videos again
Wow this list was amazing I actually have seen most but some I have never heard of which is awesome it’s so rare for a movie list to Be so versatile can’t wait to watch the three I have never heard of or seen!! 😊
I actually did finish "Under the Skin" and much like "Hobo with a shotgun", I still hsve no idea what I was supposed to be seeing.
The 2018 movie Possum about the disgraced children’s puppeteer was pretty disturbing too. I can still hear that creepy possum poem in my head.
The Neon Demon is an amazing movie just for its visuals alone
Complete bs on the Babadook being scarier than the Exorcist . My parents saw it in the theater and said people were hysterically crying, throwing up and running out of theaters. To this day that movie gives me nightmares and I never dream of scary movies. Remember that kid was stabbing herself in the crotch WITH A CRUCIFIX swearing "F! ME!!" Her head swiveling, her levitating off the bed,the "help me" on her stomach, how she talked to her mother, her language was so vulger and THAT CRABWALK DOWN THE STAIRS! All terrifying to the senses.
Great list. My adds - Goodnight Mommy & The Autopsy of Jane Doe,
Autopsy of Jane doe was a little dry I my personal opinion.
@@jinuouslopez9069 No kidding, I thought the slow buildup was great. I keep thinking - this time her eyes are gonna open and I'm gonna sh**.
that scene your talking about in hereditary, are you talking about the girl cutting the head off a bird?
"Raw," absolute gem 100% 👍
"Under the Skin," is such a boring rubbish movie. Effects are not worth the pain of S. Johansson for that length of time. It's not slow burn, it's embers.
"Babadook" was sad not scary.
