For me it was definitely Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. About a year ago, I lost my mother and ever since I've struggled to give it a place as my relationship with my mom wasn't perfect. I related so much to Joy feeling not truly accepted while being deeply flawed herself. I was struggling to hold back tears in the theatre. My dad still mentions the movie often too, as one that really positively surprised him.

    • @feelingReckless13
      @feelingReckless13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yeah my grandpa and a friend of mine both recommended it to me the same week and they don't tend to have the same taste in movies so I got curious and went to see it without knowing anything else about it. I was surprised but it was amazing. I saw it in the local indie movie theater and there was like maybe 5-10 other people in there with me in one of the relatively small screens (there's probably 30 seats total) so you know, I could also hear when people were crying, not just when they were laughing. It was a very great experience. My dad and stepmom were in town for a day (just one) and I made them go see it with me, same movie theater, but the biggest screen (probably seated 100) and it was mostly full. Still a great experience but not really the same level of intimacy of being close enough to hear everyone crying with you. I think it's one of the best movies ever made.

When M3gan sang Titanium and Tell Me Your Dreams, I cried. When she sprayed that woman and melted off her face, I clapped. When she did that Tik Tok dance, I was inspired. M3gan is a better friend than most people. She doesn't betray, she cares, she is loyal. The world can end tomorrow, it doesn't matter. At least I met M3gan along the way. The protector and ally of the Gays.

Tàr is a film I just cannot shake. Yea, 2022 had its share of good popcorn flicks, and enjoyable “big”

Have you seen or reviewed Three Thousands Years of Longing? I'm so surprised by how little attention it received considered how bizarre it was. Some of the visuals are absolutely incredible and had me floored, but the movie is especially interesting because it has two big parts and it's basically one giant tonal shift that may or may not stick the landing.

Three Thousand Years of Longing was number three in my list of 2022's best films, just under The Innocents and The Black Phone.
The performances and visuals were astounding, but what I loved most about this film was the filmmakers' clear passion for not only legends and storytelling, but science and knowledge.
I was disappointed to see Three Thousand Years of Longing completely snubbed by this year's Oscars. At the very least, it deserved a Production Design nomination.

Also once they leave Istanbul, well... it just fizzles out, it feels like a thirty minutes ending. My no. 1 of last year was _Hatching_ , a Finnish-language film that got a one-off screening in the UK. I didn't have the upbringing or the kind of mother the lead character has, but the whole film hit on a deeply personal level and has stuck with me ever since. It's so hard to believe that it's Hanna Bergholm's directorial debut as it feels like a film directed by someone who's been doing this for years. Nobody else I know has seen it (justified since it was just that one-off screening), and I _really_ want to talk about it.
Conversely, my worst no. 1 was directed by someone whose career spans 20yrs and yet still hasn't grasped the fucking basics of storytelling and filmmaking. _Jurassic World: Dominion_ . It was _Jurassic World: Dominon_ .

I know it wasn't a film from this year, but your mention of The Fabelmans having that 'Spielberg magic' made me wonder if you'd seen his remake of West Side Story, because I'd argue that film absolutely had his special touch to it and is such a fantastic palette cleanser for all the bad movie musicals we've been getting over the last few years. Anyway, I haven't seen EEAAO or Banshees of Inisherin yet, so I'll go with Jordan Peele's Nope for my pick for best film of the year. A big epic blockbuster that wonderfully taps into the human addiction to fame and spectacle, featuring genuinely one of the most uncomfortably horrifying scenes I've seen in a horror film, and some fantastic performances from Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. I'm genuinely shocked and flabbergasted that it got no recognition at this year's Oscars, not even for visual effects or sound design. At any rate, it's firmly cemented Jordan Peele as one of my favourite film directors currently working

I get so happy for every year that makes up for the last and always believe there is that one piece of cinema that will redeem your faith in humanity.
    Bullet Train:
I enjoy chaos as long as I can keep up with it but this was so much all over the place that I got lost and fell asleep.
    Glass Onion:
I don't know what happened to Rian Johnson but this didn't hold the same interest and Knives Out is the best for me.
    Dinner in America:
    You converted me. !!!!!!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
    Don't Worry, Darling:
I was immediately intrigued by-despite the poorly executed amount of time-Alice's subconcious trying to alert her.
    Scream 5:
I'm loving Jenna Ortega but it was boring and bad.
    Morbius:
It's actually fitting that Jared's career died with Requiem for a Dream and he was resurrected as a vampire.
    365 Days This Day:
I'm bummed that we'll no longer get "are you lost, baby girl?"
Separate shout-out to Cha-Cha Real Smooth, Everything Everywhere & Banshees for personally resonating.

Great list, Amanda! (I disagree about 5cream being one of the worst of the year, but I wasn't as into Scream 4, so...different people, different rankings.) For me, the worst movie of the year was easily Netflix's adaptation of Persuasion. I have never hated a movie that much to my memory. The best that I've seen was EEAAO, but I think The Banshees of Inisherin could overtake it whenever I'm able to finally see it. Looking forward to another year of movies and watching as you either fall in love with them or lose your faith in human creativity while I laugh at your reaction in the background, lol.

Amanda i love your reviews so much and i live for your recommendations.
i wanted to make a request, if you find the time please watch the Thai series "I Told Sunset About You" and the following "Last Twilight in Phuket" and "I Promised You the Moon", all three combined its a total of 11eps, so it shouldn't take you more than a day.
I just feel like you'll really love this series being a fellow queer person, its a coming of age story to 2 boys from school to college.
If possible, please watch, and if you ever make a review on it, i will be beyond glad, but i also know you might not want to because it just hits way close to the soul.
lots of love, and thank you again for your reviews and recommendations.

Haven't really thought about my top 10 list, but I know for sure what two movies would be there: The Banshees of Inisherin and GDT's Pinocchio. The Banshees blew me away, I laughed so hard one moment and had my stomach in knots the next. Incredible stuff. And del Torro's Pinocchio is _this close_ to a masterpiece... Amanda, if you haven't seen it and want to fix the bad taste I'm sure the soulless Disney remake left in your mouth, and if you at all care for animation, please watch it, you won't regret it.

I'm really banking on GDT's Pinocchio winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature this year. After the whole bit last year where they made fun of animation being a kids-only medium, I'd love to see them swallow their words as the award goes to this beautifully crafted story about father-son relationships, anti-fascism and the burden of immortality

I have such a hard time watching movies for a lot of different reasons so being able to watch your reviews helps a lot because I still get to enjoy them in my own way and I can invest on days where I'm capable in watching movies that I think sound good. I invested in Don't Worry Darling before I started watching your videos though which is, actually, how I found them because I was trying to figure out if I'd missed something or wasn't getting something since I felt like it was just almost not quite all the way there. Thanks for your great content.

There’s something about seeing my absolute favourite artist (IU/Lee Jieun) in one of these videos that makes me so fucking proud of her. She’s been an actress in Korea for about a decade but the stuff she was in didn’t really show her as a serious actress imo but the reviews on this film have me so optimistic when I can finally see it.

I know how you feel about 2021 movies. Between Judas and The Black Messiah and EEOAO, I didn't see a single movie that I could feel joy about. I had film depression. But 2022 had a fair few fun and exciting films both blockbusters and indie. It feels like the movies are finally back.

Man this list was really close to mine-which admittedly isn't shocking because I *do* get a disproportionate amount of my movie recommendations from this channel.
Anyway, personally I'd say Everything everywhere all at once is probably my list topper, because just...damn that was good. I don't usually cry in movies, but I'll fully admit I did in that one. Never seen a movie so successfully go from sad to funny to personal and back again without missing a beat. The theatre experience was amazing to boot.
Though seeing it right before Dr strange 2 was a mistake; I'm no marvel fan, but I love sam raimi-however it just got blown out of the water.
Also bullet train might be my number 2. It's not like...amazing? But at the same time it succeeds in just being so fun the whole way through, and some of the camerawork was a blast

There's still movies I need to see but honestly 2022 was kind of a weak year for me, all of the movies people loved I just didn't care for. Barbarian was easily my favorite movie of the year. Also thank you for putting Scream on your biggest disappointment list I legitimately hated it and couldn't understand the good reviews

I'm another person who was surprised by how much I loved Bullet Train. It was just my kind of chaos.
I watched Everything, Everywhere, All at Once with my parents, and loved it. They, on the other hand, viscerally hated it, and that's a bit of a bummer. We do have very different tastes in all kinds of media though, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Sigh.
