I will forever be a Daytona Prototype apologist. Mainly because I remember first tuning into SPEED Channel back in 2004-2005ish and always seeing the GrandAM series racing. That was the first time I watched any other racing series besides than NASCAR or Drag Racing. Those are fond childhood memories of mine ❤

@markzebr6463 oh FOR SURE I have!! Been going to a race every year at Mid-Ohio since 2016, (The last two years I've managed to go to the IMSA, IndyCar, and NASCAR weekends at Mid-Ohio. Sadly IMSA didnt return this year)
I've been to the Rolex 24 twice (2017,2023). I've also been to VIR to catch IMSA out there as well.

Hey, You missed these parts in how they influenced pop culture!:
-In EA Nascar 2005 Chase for the cup, DPs are playable cars
-In Japan a Riley MK. XI Chassis DP named the *Mooncraft Shinden 16* was powered by a Toyota 1UZ, was ran in the GT300 category in Super GT. (Should I mention it once wore Neon Evangelion colors?!)
-DPs were playable cars featured in Iracing
-Forza 6 & 7 featured the Corvette DP and the Ford-Riley DP
-Chip Ganassi's number "01" from their Telmex/Target DP Lexus era have become references amongst Lexus branded GT cars, like racing number choices.
-Also The red and blue liveries of the Chip Ganassi Telmex/Target DPs may have been the influence to the Ford GT's WEC/ACO/IMSA liveries

The Daytona prototype is just beautiful!
And I still love driving the Riley in iRacing even if it’s a legacy car these days, so no more official events..
      I love their simplicity!

    • @RACECAR
      @RACECAR 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Interestingly, the "01" is actually reference to the chassis that Chip Ganassi Racing ran in their debut season: #001
And speaking of Lexus, here's a funny and ironic connection: Chassis #001 (one of many Lexus entries in 2004) was last ran in 2010 by Aim Autosport, who in turn many years later teamed up with Jimmy Vasser and Danny Sullivan to field two Lexus RC F GT3 cars.

  • @MainMite06

23:35 You forgot and possibly misinterpreted another crucial detail:
-The LMP2s were running the European LMP2 rulebooks and specs of their timeframe, which for gross summary allowed them to be ~2090lbs and have restrictions in body size, and have production-based engines restricted to ~530-450hp....
Lmp2s have no restriction on how their monocoque chassis can be made, and they can shape the car however they wish as long as dimensions are obeyed....
In Summary LMP2s were weaksauce closed fendered "2-seat" F1 cars
Imsa was going to allow the old DPs to race as equals with the Euro-rulebook LMP2s in USA.
How were Tubeframe-over-Fiberglass racecars going to compete with lightweight-high downforce, carbon-monocoque low-powered weak formula cars?
-IMSA unrestricted the DPs aero restrictions as long as the cockpits remain intact.
-The tire sizes the DPs used increased to the LMP sizes.
But this is the crucial detail of DP dominance even if restricted weight (2,200 lbs for DPs 2090 for P2s) nor aero advantage was there:
    *POWER*
2014 DPs were pushing ~700hp where P2s could run ~550hp!
The Corvette DP was using an N/A 5.5L LS engine which was fat-cammed to believably push ~650-700hp
The Ford DPs were using the 3.5L Twin-Turbo Duratec-Ecoboost V6 that may have pushed ~650hp
Overall the DPs murdered the weaksauce LMPs in being too powerful and outrunning them in every straightaway. Also the LMPs in question were often wearing their high-downforce aero in high speed tracks like Daytona 24, where horsepower and acceleration will make or break you.
In a weird way the cheaper metal tubeframe cars were faster, and more slippery than the carbon-chassis LMPs.

I have very fond memories from the Brumos vs Ganassi Rolex 24, it was one of the first races I watched and the TV broadcast in my country was awesome. I didn’t mind the car’s aesthetics at the time. I was always entertained until the DP + LMP2 era. The exit of the Muscle Milk car left a sour taste to me, as it was my favorite team since the ALMS era. Their Lola Aston Martin and their HPD LMP1s were some of the best looking cars racing at that time. But nevertheless, I had a very great time watching the DPs compete 😄

I really like the old DP cars. I love every now and then goin back and watching the old races with these cars and find it funny watching em race around the Road and Oval combos that NASCAR and IndyCar would race at, especially with Phoenix and even Iowa. Plus I watched my first Rolex 24 in 2010 late in this era. Also the old Gen 1 and Gen 2 DP cars from 2003-2011 r seriously goated. Like ya ask probably a majority of sports cars fans about what they know of Daytona Prototype, chances r they’ll just say DPI or the Ganassi Ford Rileys and Chevy Corvette DPs. Even in Sim Racing ya only really have the Corvette DPs in like iRacing and modded in Assetto Corsa. The only early DP car in sim racing is the Pontiac Riley on iRacing.

It’s just like every other story in sports car racing, manufacturers spend a bunch of money, privateers get priced out, then the board room of the manufacturers say they are spending too much and they quit now the class is dead.
