- “We hit it off like a house afire” says Stephen Colbert about his first meeting with country legend Toby Keith, who became a frequent guest on “The Colbert Report” and later performed on “The Late Show.” The two men made an unlikely pair, in Stephen’s words, “like when a duck and a horse are friends.” Thank you, Big Dog.

I’ll be joining Toby Keith soon I have been battling throat cancer. I’ve lived a good 65 years. I doubt I’ll be here at 66. I’ll see you soon Toby.
I wish you and those you care about peace and solace.
Peace to you brother
God bless you, sir. I wish you journeys of peace.
FUK CANCER, bless you Brother
Ride it 'til the wheels come off, man. But when your journey is over, Godspeed. You've earned your rest.
Years before Toby was ever diagnosed with cancer an old original bandmate's two year old daughter was diagnosed with a tumor. Toby got them into St Jude, which he had been supporting for years. They were unable to save the little girl but after seeing the model of St Jude providing housing, and everything else the children's families need to be able to be with them during their treatment free of charge. He was inspired to create his own foundation in Oklahoma, The OK Kids Korral, where they provide those same services for the families of children going through cancer treatments at OU Medical's cancer treatment center. That to me sums up the character of the man.
Only one problem; this is the tale put out by his marketing agent, whose idea it was to create the OK Kids Korral, in order to improve Toby's image to people like you. Normally, people don't need to put out press statements like that to do good works.
@@nadiamccall4311what a POS person you are, I can’t imagine living so miserable, they didn’t put this information out from his marketing, it was put out by the people who lost their daughter, he clearly lived in a way that he didn’t have to try to improve his image, he was obviously good to people around him, maybe you should think of doing the same!
@@nadiamccall4311 If Colbert says Toby Keith is a good dude, Toby Keith is a good dude. Whether its a marketing stunt or not (do we know how much TK contributes to the foundation?), kids and their families are receiving a great service when they're going through a very tough time.
@@nadiamccall4311 Wow, that sounds really cynical. Where did you hear that it was his agents idea and that he didn't really want to help people?
@@nadiamccall4311
If they don't put the word out how will people know that it exists?
Regardless of the reason millions will be helped.
It still says a lot about this good man in my opinion.
🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸
Toby considered himself a "conservative Democrat", basically he saw positives on both sides of the aisle. He didn't like politics, he loved America. That's something a lot of people need to get with today. He was a great guy and will be missed.
If Stephen Colbert and Toby Keith can respect each other and be friends, maybe there’s hope for this country yet.
Hell yeah. We will always have more in common with eachother than we are different❤
Probably not, this is one of the few times hes been a decent person.
@@Ryan-li8qc Are you daft? Toby Keith was always a decent person, no not decent, an amazing person. Way better than you can ever hope to be after this BS comment.
@@Ryan-li8qc Well you’re certainly no better, clearly
@Luschan nope, gave up being tolerant of the lefts shit a long time ago. The left is unwilling to listen to reality. It's Trump or death.
Did not expect Colbert to give a more touching tribute than most of his fellow country singers. He got me at the end when he got choked up. I have a new respect for Stephen and I am sorry you lost your friend sir.
and his greater message of appreciating the whole person and not dwelling on the things you disagree with is very much needed now. Too much polarization of "both' sides. It's tearing this country up. Comes just as much from the Left as the Right. Everyone has to own their part in it.
Well said.❤
When push comes to shove we're all human beings at our core. The disagreements will always be there (some people being angrier than others), but it comes with the territory due to different upbringings.
I'm far from being a country music fan (not part of the target audience), but I respect its legacy and significance. Toby was one of the greats.
Well said 🥺❤️

I watched Stephen Colbert last night and the tribute he gave to Toby Keith left me crying. It was one of the best tributes I've ever heard about anyone!

The problem is when you can't agree on human rights there is no middle ground.
Amen 🙏🏻 it was a great tribute and I second that. We definitely need more, putting our differences aside and finding common ground. We are all humans and we are all Americans 🇺🇸. Rest in peace, Toby. I’m a huge country music fan and I was a huge Toby Keith fan are used to rock out in the car to should’ve been a cowboy when it was first released as my mom or dad was driving us somewhere. I totally group or 90s country and Toby was one of my favorites from the moment he came on the music scene. Then, as I grew up and became an adult, I admire him as a person. Thank you Toby for everything and thank you Stephen for honor and Toby and such kind words. And I’m glad you found friendship with someone that you may not agree on everything with it shows great character in both parts. RIP to the Legend Toby Keith. 😢💔🙏🏻🇺🇸

@@materialgrl2000 you’re never going to get everyone to agree on human rights. Stop beating yourself up over it, life is too short. The best thing we can do is love each other and accept each other for who we are.
@@materialgrl2000 The problem is THAT ATTIDUDE which you immediately took with your reply.
There IS middle ground and we must find it. That is how this nation was built.
There is more than just the negative connotation of the word 'compromise'.
We FIND a way or we MAKE a way to work together, or we FAIL; 'A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand.' How do people not understand that very simple logic?
All of us should take Mr. Colbert's tribute to heart and embrace our fellow Americans. We used to do that. But, especially in the last 10 or 20 years, that tradition has been on the decline. Thank you Mr. Colbert for reminding us of how things should be
I appreciate your tribute to Toby Keith. 20 years ago I was in the Air Force and stationed at Tinker AFB (Oklahoma City). Toby Keith would occasionally appear unannounced in the bleachers to watch squadron softball games. No fanfare. But the guys noticed. It meant a lot to the guys. I’ll always remember and appreciate that about him.

That was a great tribute Colbert... Rest in peace Toby Keith.

I totally almost always disagree with your monologs , an your constant attack on certain people , but your Tribute to Toby Keith brought me to tears..he is a legend , Thank you.
I agree
The first time I didn’t want to throw something at the TV at Cobert
It was a total bullshit tribute by the most blatant propagandist of this era
Stephen, I disagree with you politically on almost everything, but this is one of the most heartfelt tributes I've seen to the memory of Toby Keith. Thank You and Rest Easy Toby....

This shows me that opposites can find common.ground
Same, I don’t like Colbert, but I respect this so much
I did not expect that from Colbert. This says a lot about Toby and who he was. God rest his soul.
Stephen is underrated in the category of great men. I love his intelligence and insight and gentleness. I can’t believe he got me crying over Toby Keith.
You realize he's paying tribute to a racist bigot who made songs about openly murdering black people, right?
Couldn’t believe it either, but I cried too. When he said he’d looked down at his shoes & asked himself “what am I doing?” I was floored. A very decent man remembering another very decent man. Let’s pass it on.♥
Great men???? Get real.
he constantly belittles people who dont agree with him and took the opportunity to get an easy W
This is the exact thing all of us need to do with eachother, huge respect to Stephen for telling a story of correcting himself to get to know someone’s character before judging them
Colbert looks like a small woman next to Toby.
I DO NOT LIKE Colbert, but I gotta give him kudos for this. Bravo Colbert. I wish we could get back to disagreeing without hate.
...of course, he had Joy Reid on this episode (big hater), so there's still that - disappointing.
Oh yeah, Colbert always does just that🙄🙄🙄🙄

Wow!!! I met him at my job. I work for Ford Motor Company and he did a commercial for our F150’s at Dearborn Truck Plant around 2004. I was a union rep and didn’t know him. At the time I believe he just won some Grammys. I happen to be outside when he pulled up. He was surprised I never heard of him and asked for my name. When it came time to do the commercial, EVERYONE was excited to see him. When he saw me he said my name in front of everyone. The shocked look on their faces made me feel like I hit the mega bucks!! I played it off like I personally knew him. That was such an awesome day and unforgettable moment for me. May he rest in paradise 😊
Great story. I'm sure he had less fans in Dearborn than Claycomo 🙂. Glad they welcomed her up north as well.
This needs to go viral. The terrible things I've seen said by people who simply didn't agree with Toby's politics are so disheartening. Stephen gave an amazing tribute right here. Like a genuine human should. Rest easy, Toby.
Didn't like his politics at all but I loved his music and he seemed like a really nice guy.

I live in Norman Oklahoma, just a mile or two from where he lived. I’ve always, always felt like I (we) didn’t *really* know him. I know 100% that people in my circle pre-judged him, and I’d always remind them of how for the longest time, based on the sign out on his property, he had supported many local democratic politicians running for office here. In that way, he was an enigma.
I didn’t know him. He seemed to be quietly existing among us. As huge of star he was, nobody here had anything bad to say about Toby Keith, the person. A man deserving of so much respect, I think. May he rest in peace. And as always, fuck cancer.

@@quantumbuddhistso…you missed the point of Stephen’s commentary on this vid eh?
Mr. Colbert, I can't say I'm a fan of yours but that was an excellent tribute. Well done.
You can disagree on politics and still be a fan of someone’s character. Colbert is an example of what every American should aspire to be.
@nbigsby It's tough to watch him complain about how we're all getting angrier at each other when he has consistently tried to "other" everyone who leans right of center ever since he took the reins of The Late Show. He is an agent of the type of division that he claims to dislike. So many of our political leanings are influenced by our parents, by our families, and by those who surround us. If everyone who has ever shown you kindness thinks one way, then you'll naturally be inclined to think that way as well (at least some of the time). I'm all for calling out extremism, but chastising average people who lean slightly right or left is barely one step above attacking someone for an immutable characteristic. I enjoyed the Colbert Report because he didn't take himself so seriously back then and he gave both sides their due criticism. He has lost his way. This was a nice tribute and a rare moment of honesty, clarity, and nuance for Colbert version 2.0, but I can't see myself tuning in much and I certainly don't see him as "an example of what every American should aspire to be".
@@n0-one0 you’re literally saying because you don’t agree with him politically you won’t be watching him (which could translate to you don’t like his character). Politics isn’t everything and you can disagree with that and still be friends with them. I have two friends who lean very far to the right while I lean more to the left. They’re my two best friends.
Many of my close friends are my political opposites. I just had lunch with one. I won't watch Colbert anymore because he regularly insinuates that everyone who doesn't shill for big pharma and the neo-con warmongers in the democratic party are idiots. Also his writing staff at The Late Show are unfunny hacks. I watched the Late Show every night when Letterman hosted, and he has different politics than I do as well. He just never talked down to regular people.
Why are u even here if you’re not a fan 🙄
As much as I don't care for Colbert, I appreciate his empathy and humanity. I appreciate him being a stand-up person.
The tribute was very nice. I don't care for Colbert either with all his POLITICS - but this is about Toby Keith. I never realized what a special man he was. GOD, Family and Country. Condolences to your family. Well done Cowboy - you will be so missed.

I had learned of his passing much earlier today but it wasn't until I watched this video that I shed a tear for his passing. Thank you for humanizing him. As a vet, I loved his patriotism. He had a special place in the hearts of my 3 sons, all who joined the military after 9/11. Two of them went to Iraq. His "boot up your a** song" resonated with the people in the military that went to the middle east after 9/11 on a level most civilians will never get. And it inspired people when he toured the middle east and sang it. Just watch videos where the crowds he sang to over there react to that song. In some ways, he was a modern day Bob Hope, as he would go places other entertainers wouldn't even consider. I am a fan of many of his songs, and will always be grateful for his support of the military and veterans, as I come from a long line of those that have served. Will very much miss him. He was a great talent, with a heart of gold, that cared about people in ways many entertainers don't. Thanks for the tribute to a wonderful human being.
I don’t know this show, but a beautiful tribute to a man of incredible patriotism, integrity and principle. RIP Toby ❤

My sister is the Marketing Director at the Ranchmans' Cookhouse and Dance Hall in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Mr. Keith first appeared there in 1988, with The Easy Money Band. A few years ago, when Mr. Keith sang "I Love this Bar", he dedicated it to the Ranchmans'. Remembering him today, my sister wrote, "Each and every time he performed in Calgary he always invited me to his show and/or stopped by for a steak sandwich and a visit, often getting up and jamming with the band...So gracious and kind to remember his roots. Thanks for your music. Rest in peace my friend." I know how close she is to all whose work she and the Ranchmans fostered and promoted over the decades. May Mr. Keith's memory be for a blessing.

You know what this was VERY well done. I don't agree with Colbert but he was absolutely a true Legend here.
Toby Keith was a great performer, talented song writer, dedicated family man and humanitarian. He was a good man. Thank you for that heartfelt memorial, Mr. Colbert.
Well said. For the people we encounter in our lives, that get us to check our prejudices, whether by choice or simply by circumstance, we should be forever grateful. I certainly am. It's thanks to these experiences the world grows wider and more caring. Rest in Peace.
Judging Toby Keith for his post-9/11 jingoism and warmongering and vile attacks on anyone who opposed the war in Iraq is not prejudice. It's judgement for his actions. Prejudice is pre-judgement, and he has been -- and should be -- post-judged as he was. That's part of Toby Keith too. Just because he died doesn't mean that we should forget about all the parts of a person and all the things he did.
My family have all different opinions and views on life, we do not agree on many things, but that's what being an individual means. What I love about them, is that they will call someone out even if they support them for doing wrong, saying something stupid or just out right lying. They don't defend or make excuses for them. What a lovely tribute to someone he admired.
Reminds me of growing up when we didn’t care what side of the aisle our friends were on, we just had fun.

@@sailormade2 It was from the heart. It is a shame that he had to leave us knowing the hardship our country is facing today. He was a real patriot! And I know he must have been troubled by it. Tragedy can often bring people together. But what is happening right now is not something being done to us; it is something we are doing to each other.
Can’t say I’m a big fan of Colbert, but he had an authentic classy tribute to the icon Toby Keith! RIP Mr. Keith
This one got me. It's a shame when a notable (not just famous) person dies, but this is a serious loss. I shed tears over this. Never knew how much I appreciate great Americans like him til today. 🇺🇸
Toby always said, as a patriot, he supported all presidents, would perform for any of them that asked him.
As a combat veteran who served honorably overseas after we were horrifically attacked on 9-11-2001, Toby's music gave inspiration to me and thousands of young American Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Guardians like me. Most of all, even though I was not previously much of a country music fan, country music and Toby's in particular gave us great comfort in a time and place were "comfort" of any kind was extremely rare. We knew that he honestly cared about us and he made a significant effort to prove that he was genuine about it. I will always Honor him as a Great American and His music will live on in our hearts. A reminder of a time when our love of country far exceeded that of political differences 😔. Rest in Peace Toby
A really beautiful memorial tribute. Stephen has the best words. He knows what they mean and he uses them well!
Hello beautiful 👋🌹, how are you doing?....I’m sorry for Invading your privacy, i was on my scrolling mode then I saw you and stop to say hi…I hope you don’t mind.
Very good tribute. We can disagree yet respect each other and actually play together.......... Thank you for posting this,
The way it mostly was before social media took over everyone lives
TK was a hell of a Guy. R.I.P. from your friends in Austin Texas
As a comedian you really have to respect his candor and sincerity, they barely cut away before Steven broke out balling which I'm sure followed the take. Toby's authenticity is what made me admire him maybe even more than his hits. R.I.P. cowboy, the angels have a new poet:-)
Thank you Stephen Colbert for the beautiful and heartfelt tribute to Toby Keith.
Beautiful tribute. Toby will be greatly missed. 🕊️💙🙏🏻
Well said ma'am 💞🌹💞🌹😢😢😢
I can say that I dislike Jimmy Kimmel and a lot of other late night people, however, your heartfelt speech gave me hope that more people would come together. Sorry that you had to have Joy at the same time but I get it. Thank you, sincerely, Kimmie
Yep he is ❤thanks big dog
Well said ma'am 💞🌹❤😢😢
I’m an Oklahoman. I went to church with Toby growing up. Toby and Stephen are very different and I never knew they’d even met. This was beautiful by Stephen. I hope we can all learn a little bit from this.
As a Dutch person I only know him from your Christmas special. Rest in peace Toby Keith.
He bought two beers for every soldier in 4-1AD 4-6 infantry, gave a free concert and released his single red solo the first time.
He was a selfless person, even when I hate country music and only went because it was free.
Toby was someone who you just know and love
You should check him out, some of his songs were hilarious, others were touching, some patriotic, some outlaw cowboy music, some cowboy music... his talent was limitless.
As a Muslim I know Toby for his racism during the Iraq war. May he rot in Jahanum and feel the azab of the grave.
As a Dutch person who enjoys a wide variety of music, me and all my friends knew Toby Keith. May God bless his soul and the great social and creative works he left behind.
