I misunderstood the metal gear hint so badly, looking for an in game cd case for the codec code, that I eventually just tried to call every number in sequence until Meryl answered.... Took forever. My friends all made fun of me when I asked them how they did it.
I bought my copy of MGS at the flea market so it was just a cd in a plastic bag.... I was lucky that a cousin had the same game and he helped me with that lol
That "close the DS" trick was used in other puzzle games too... I can't remember which ones off the top of my head... it was possibly "another code", "last window" or "Hotel dusk: room 215" but i distinctly remember playing one of those games and coming across that puzzle and getting so unbelievably frustrated at not being able to solve it that, i did exactly as you said... I closed the DS out of frustration only to open it later to discover the puzzle was solved.
both Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory/Another Code used the DS closing trick. In TM/AC, it was used to solve a puzzle involving a stamp and if I remember right, HD used it for a moment where protagonist Kyle Hyde has to give mouth to mouth to another character. I can't remember if Last Window used the mechanic as well though
Since you mentioned the “Close the DS mechanic” from Phantom Hourglass, I’d like to give a shout-out to the Pan Pipes in its sequel Spirit Tracks. While not as obtuse as the Sea Chart puzzle, needing to blow into the mic on the DS to play the pipes can easily screw your over if you have a faulty system. (Both mechanics also make the games more…challenging to emulate on non-DS systems)
I closed the game out of frustration, then the lightbulb turned on two seconds later. I opened it, and smiled at how finally, anger and violence was the answer.
god the Spirit Flute was the worst instrument in the series...depending on what model of DS or 3DS/2DS you have, it gets more awkward & unfun as well. Bad enough the train was only ever either boring af or annoying af ( that 2nd one is about those damn enemy trains ), and I'm not ashamed to admit I resorted to using an Action Replay just to finish that pos game...but the flute was what clinched my desire to never touch it ever again
fun fact i used to play my ds while sitting on the couch upside down, idk stupid kid thing and my inky evolved while i was doing so so i NEVER had the issue, it wasn't until years later i found out about his upside down requirment
Dungeons of Daggorath was my childhood! I still remember having to save it on a cassette tape, and trying to remember exactly where in the tape that the save is. So many hours of my youth... You hit me hard with that nostalgia bat and I love you for it! It was an amazing game for only 8kb of code!
I know a lot of other people don’t have a problem with it, I personally don’t like stamina mechanics. I don’t want to be too tired to sprint or dodge out of the way of attacks after being raised on Mario & Mega Man being able to sprint and dash endlessly
The entirety of the fitness ring for RingFit Adventure on the Nintendo Switch. Being a little weakling man who loves games & who needs a workout, this game sounded like an excellent way to achieve both of these things. HOW-EV-ER! Being that I AM in need of exercise, I found that I wasn’t always able to stretch or squish the fitness ring properly to perform in game actions…and the longer I tried to play, my exertion went down as exhaustion went up, making me do even more poorly
Appreciate and love your content. Been watching Jules for years! I was thinking of my "deep cut" favorite games as a kid. Do yall remember Destrega. It'd be awesome to see it on one of your lists! Keep on keeping on gentlemen ❤
I was so upset finding out about the “close the DS to continue the game” when I was younger. Because I have a 2DS! So I CANNOT CLOSE MY DS!!! I literally CAN NOT beat phantom hourglass because of this stupid mechanic!!! It still makes me sad thinking about it……
I'm sorry you had to wait this long to find out, but putting your 2ds into sleep mode triggers the same code as closing the lid on another system, so it will work with that puzzle.
@@thegreatvalamir really!? Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! I will have to pull out the old 2DS again and re-play the game. I'm so happy I CAN finally beat the game knowing this now!
0:57 hey, i don't wanna alert anyone falsely... but i think tom isn't doing so well here... :O might wanna see a specialist in the fields of animation and motion... potato potata
I remember the ogre's lady obsession not be that bad. I was just a major annoyance to be honest. The first time you play, pretty much everything kicks your teeth in, especially at night. Outside of the Dark Arisen expansion and maybe some endgame stuff, everything ends up getting pretty easy. Also the elder ogres you see late game prefer men; thanks y chromosome!
Very much not a deep cut, but... Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In Chapter 3, you sign up as a fighter in the Glitz Pit in a bid to earn the championship belt, which appears to have one of the Crystal Stars needed to open the titular door. This introduces a mechanic into your fights in which Grubba, the promoter, can tell you to do, or not do, various things. If you don't obey, you don't advance even if you win the fight. Partway through your career, you'll encounter a pair of Iron Clefts. The first time you fight them, you can't win, as none of Mario's, Goombella's, Koops', or Flurrie's attacks can get through their defense. After losing, however, you'll find that the egg you rescued has hatched into a baby Yoshi, and this little guy actually does have a move that works. But here's the thing: it's possible for Grubba to tell you not to let your partner attack, and rarely, this can come during this one crucial match where your partner is necessary. You get that condition, you might as well run away, then come back and hope for something possible. (I am talking about the GameCube version; I don't know if they changed this for the Switch port.)
so.... wondering if the old castle of the winds games will ever peek into these lists as a deepcut. (not quite as basic as Rogue, but still, basically some of the first roguelikes with basic (icon based) graphics.
Inkay evolution may be annoying if you don't know but you really made it seem like it was nigh impossible to hold a handheld thing upside down for 2 seconds at the end of a fight or hold it upside down and press A if using a candy.
All my friends who have owned a Focus have had more than the usual issues over the years. So much so a few of us refer to them as the Ford F**k-us. Hope it gets fixed soon
Why'd you have to remind me of that Super Bowl 😭😭 That one actually hurt my chest fr. 49ers were right there. Should've went for the first down instead 🤦🏾
There's not an easy way to say this, and I don't want it to be taken too harshly, but Jules is the only presenter on this channel that I actually like Lists like this just mean I'm skipping the odd number entries
What about the fight with phyco mantis in metal gear solid he could read your button inputs so you couldnt hit him untill you plugged your controller into the second port
Dragon's Dogma's Ogres hate women, but female bandits hate men. Succubi will often prey on the male members of your party over the female ones. The mechanic isn't really an attack on perverted nerds; it's just inbreeding lore.
The "Reset the computer" moment from Sega's X-Men or the "Frequency is on the back of the box" from Metal Gear Solid comes to mind.
I misunderstood the metal gear hint so badly, looking for an in game cd case for the codec code, that I eventually just tried to call every number in sequence until Meryl answered.... Took forever. My friends all made fun of me when I asked them how they did it.
It was worse when you rented the game 😂
Yeah, but that’s not a deep enough cut
Thetime I wasted going through all the items in the inventory looking for a " box " 😪
I bought my copy of MGS at the flea market so it was just a cd in a plastic bag.... I was lucky that a cousin had the same game and he helped me with that lol

Don't know about the other two games, but it was definitely in the late game of Hotel Dusk.

Great colab guys! Tom sounds like hell be a great addition to this fine site under the master tutelage of Sensei Jules
That burn on the 49ers from all the way across the pond though lol 👏👏👏
I love hearing Brits opinion on our sports. Just having a world perspective is wonderful to me

“Marco!!”
Nemesis: “POLO!!!”
😂😂😂
This. This right here. Beautiful.
"You beautiful carrot brain" is one of the most elegantly beautiful insults I have ever heard. I am definitely stealing this!
I wish they put evolution methods in the Pokedex to save players the time of figuring out how new evos (or some old ones) work.
Phantom Hourglass forcing stylus use also didn't help. The stylus would sometimes be in the way of movement.

I love it when Jules hustled Tom because of catchphrases. Ha, such a captialistic world we live in!
The difficulty Tom has with turning a handheld device upside down is why we have “do not drink” warning labels on bleach.
Man I rented Odama once and had no idea what to do
Your grandpa's vhs collection???? Hey man!! I still have a vhs collection and my kids bet not have kids!! I feel attacked....
Appreciate and love your content. Been watching Jules for years! I was thinking of my "deep cut" favorite games as a kid. Do yall remember Destrega. It'd be awesome to see it on one of your lists! Keep on keeping on gentlemen ❤
The whole tiredness thing in Persona 3. It does make sure all your party get exp, though.
11:00 hey, Jules! hey! Tom Cardy's watching, his fingers on the lawyer button.
I'll admit, the Super Bowl burn made me laugh.

when describing the 'unlikely' detective pikachu sequel.... did you forget that Ryan Reynolds plays both DP's

The witches of the bog in the witcher 3 really screwed me. I say this because no matter what you chose you were screwed in some way shape or form.
I dont like that thats the connection made between dragon ball and human centipede
Games that could be really crazy good, if they were remade using modern voice and AI controls etc
I hate when developers make game progression by taking fun gameplay and then they downgrade ot instead of making fun gameplay into great.
There's not an easy way to say this, and I don't want it to be taken too harshly, but Jules is the only presenter on this channel that I actually like

10:58 how is Kerry?
U missed a couple of skip skips out on that intro bit bro 😂😂😂
Seriously? You can only select the levels that the wheel chose? I really hope some freemium games doesnt implement this feature
I have this feeling that Jules was from a different channel. Maybe what culture
I actually like Chibi-Robo Zip Lash!
If it's a game mechanic that utterly sucks and it's on a Nintendo system, it's a mechanic specifically designed to screw-over emulation players.
How come you didn't mention legend of zelda spirit tracks playing the pan flute
Not that deep of a cut it why
Not a fan of the green screen shots that you guys are doing in the video. Fonts are great. Great list
Feel like being the ANYTHING version of Andrew Tate is a horrible idea
Sorry about your parents, Jules.
Tom looks like a wish version of Elon Musk
Didn't know you drove in the US... that was probably your problem
Kids don't know what vhs tapes are. 😂

Sorry. The height difference between Jules and his co-presenter is really undeniable
Jules, I hate your background. Square white lined boxes expanding forward towards us? Goin back to the 80s Windows Screen Saver are you?
