    Morning all! What do you guys reckon? Will you be buying one? Or even two?? I do love the tone of it, but whether I can bring myself to buy a 2nd one or not I'm not sure. Maybe 2 and an echo sub?! My wallet is screaming. If you're interested in the echo studio then by buying through my link I'll get commission at no cost to you:
    Buy The Echo Studio:
    UK: amzn.to/2uyin8i
    US: amzn.to/2FvwNZ7
    Thanks,

    This speaker is super worth it. I used it for about a year alone and every person who listened to it was blown away. It had deep bass and amazing highs. I then decided to upgrade and put it in stereo as a home theater setup. It’s comparable to a full Bose or Sony sound system. The second speaker is a must. It take the experience up about 6 levels. This thing is a joy to listen to. Ive never had speakers so good I don’t want to leave the house and stop watching movies or listening to music. Amazon did some magic. The only complaint I have is that its a tad bit closed off in terms of customization. It’s the best investment i’ve ever made.

    As an ex-audio engineer...it is possible if you were to play a few tones outside the range of human hearing before the music starts, its not exactly ideal as you would need the equivalent of a gun shot which would be audible, but you could potentially do a 'cheap-ass' version with an high frequency tone to calculate the rough position.

    • @sam_9228
      @sam_9228 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      (I'm not an audio engineer) But I'm wondering if maybe it looks at the waveform of the audio playing and compares it to the waveform from the Microphones. This is what the AirPods Pro do and I'm wondering if this also does that.

    We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning th-cam.com/users/postUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.

    I have 16 echos, in various sizes, I think I have at least one of each, I have them all connected for surround sound throughout my house. I just got the studio, I love it, I ordered another, and plan on connecting them to the sub woofer, which I currently have paired with 2 echo plus. I cant wait to reconfigure them and hear the surround sound, I do have a somewhat large house, I love loud music, especially while cleaning. I definitely recommend this speaker.

    I couldn't tell if you liked it or not until the end... but, I will say that I love my Studio. It's in my office, in a corner, and I basically only listen to NPR and Pandora on it, but it sounds amazing (relatively speaking). It blows the soundbar + subwoofer I was using previously out of the water. And yeah, if you listen hard enough you can hear the "faking" of the 3d sound, but for casual listening I haven't come across anything better yet.

  • @MAMDAVEM

    Watching your vid reminded me of my first "5.1" sound bar (Yamaha ysp-1) which I bought over 15 years ago when my other half complained about the amount of speakers and wiring I had in our livingroom for our brand new and extraordinarily expensive 42 inch plasma TV. Setting up the Ysp-1 was manual, you had to sit on the sofa in front of the TV and adjust the Left back and Right back "speakers" until you hear the tone coming from behind you and then adjust the volume to account for the nature of the walls/windows. With your eyes closed you could hear the tone track along the walls and end up behind you. I was amazed. Being used to proper 5.1. systems I was very sceptical about the soundbar, but I was proved wrong. Admitedly it is not as strong as a proper 5.1. system but it was a fantastic solution when you don't want of can't have the speakers and wiring. The main limitations were as you say placement. it worked I think becasue we had a symetrical rectangular room where there was sufficient space behing the seating position for the back wall reflected sound to get to your ears. Yamaha and others have I believe perfected these and made the setup automatic. For those who say you can't get a 5.1. like performance out of a soundbar, so long as you have a sepearate sub woofer and the right setup I say WRONG. For those who say but they are not as good as a sperarate 5.1 set up I would say probably right.

    I have an Amazon Echo Studio, I will say it knows where the wall is behind it. If you compare to a UE boom for example with 360 sound, it reduces the echo effect and directs sound towards my coach. But you’re right one speaker cannot do 3D sound unless centrally located

  • @deoxideo
    @deoxideo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are correct. 3D analysis of any room uses the mic to create the sweet spot where the mic is, NOT where the listener’s ears are. …(that’s why any professional analysis involves putting a mic where the listeners ears are)
    It’s creating a sweet spot where it is, not where you, the listener is. Room analysis is not only frequency but speaker timing also.
    Your head cannot occupy the same space of the echo show without moving it.. which renders the calibration useless.
    At best it’s adjusting the equalization for mids highs etc.

    Acoustic EQ really does make a huge difference in just about any sound system, and the technology has gotten adaptive as the marketing claims. However, it is not going to make a single unit appear to have an equivalent soundstage to an actual wide stereo pair or surround system. The top-firing speaker is a plus though.

  • @andrewl9020
    @andrewl9020 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    About 10 years ago I had a Yamaha sounder that worked in very much the same way by bouncing sound off the walls. It was not that bad, but found that after prolonged listening it started to give me a really bad headache due to the artificial nature of the sound. Not sure if this product would do the same. In the long run it can't really replace separate speakers though.

  • @NatashaJBella

    Such a perfect review. Just bought one of these, the sound quality is excellent for it's price point, but it's just too big and too good to waste a corner of the room close to a wall. I'm returning it and replacing with a Echo 4th gen, which I'll just add additional speakers to when I feel the need. This video along with your review on the 4th gen echo helped me confirm my decision. Subscribed and binge-watching for a few days now. So entertaining! :)

  • @mydogskips2
    @mydogskips2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, but the most, most important thing you need to consider, I think most people would rather have just one speaker positioned someone in their room as opposed to five or six spread all around the room.
    Of course one single speaker isn't going to be as good as having five or six in a true surround sound setup, but if it gets 80% of the way there, saves a bit of money and space, and most importantly, eye clutter, a lot of people will find it appealing.

It's in my kitchen just as a general nice sounding portable speaker for when I'm playing my Spotify on. I am considering having one in my bedroom and living room. I wonder, if I do get multiple ones, when I command music to play on one, will it turn all on and play automatically? That would be cool if it did that! :) Love your videos Paul really! I really like your energy and the way you produce your videos. I got a second one, and already have the echo subwoofer, was able to jerry rig a sound bar to them. I got rid of my 2500 sound system when I moved. which admittedly was better, but not 4 times better than the 600 dollars this new setup costs. Even with just two echo studios, at around a 400 dollars I doubt you’ll get a better bang for your buck when you take account alexa caballitos (if you’re into that kind of thing)

  • @34meridian
    @34meridian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is. Irving wrong about the sound bouncing as this is for home use and not for a theatre room with sound proofing. That type of room would have several speakers positioned for that very reason and are not meant to bounce the sound like this does. Did you try it with Amazon HD music to test the Dolby Atmos feature? Because that seems a major selling point. It’s obviously for music over being a surround system for your TV.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's for home use. That's what I'm saying: a theatre room stops sound bouncing because reflected sound is horrible. Therefore bouncing it off your living room intentionally for home use is a bad idea.
      Saying it's obviously for music rather than movies just isn't true. They've created options specifically to connect it to the fire TV cube and amazon firestick especially for watching movies. Their marketing material is pushing it on this basis.

    • @34meridian
      @34meridian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulhibbert that is a fair point about using it’s with Fire TV but you wouldn’t expect music to sound good on that 70 quid Sony Surround system as that’s is secondary use. The primary use for this speaker is listening to music. And you can’t dismiss the calibration as fantasy bollocks. I’ve got a very old Yamaha sound bar that uses similar technology so you can hear sound effects behind you even though the sound bar is at the front. Of course not gonna be as good as a dedicated system but doesn’t take up the same footprint and still sounds decent.

    Hey there! I'm new to your site. I just saw this episode. It was new to me. I have been thinking about how "the Mrs. wouldn't let you put a table in the middle of the living room..." issue. Why not attach it to the ceiling? < an underutilized surface in most cases. You won't bark your shins on a table in the middle of the room. From what you've said, you can make a Flick do your button pushing for you, yes? Will it look odd? Who cares? If you get awesome sound you can ignore the theoretical eyesoreness. Extra bonus: if it's hanging out on the ceiling, you won't have to dust the top of it. In an ideal world you would be doing a giveaway for a couple of these beasts.

    I did wonder about the studio. Thanks for the review. Glad I didn’t get one now. I’m interested in what you do with the two dots though. I tried it with my fire tv but they kept dropping out and needed to be linked again. Then we had the problem of one or other of them being superfluous when I called Alexa but both going off when I made an announcement but wasn’t using the tv. Then I had the echo flex and echo show in the same room and when I saw something on the show, I’d say “Alexa tell me more” and the show wouldn’t understand me because the flex’s speaker was set up to play through the show but the microphone picked it up but didn’t know what story I wanted to play. It was just a bit hot mess.
    Anyway, that’s more of a rant than anything.

    Overall I look forward to looking at movies and listening to music with this device.
    It enhances the experience over my current setup by about 60%.
    Might get another one if they are ever on sale.
    I once set up a 5.1 surround sound system just with a bunch of old PC speakers. Cost me about 20 quid to do.
    Even that was freaking amazing, so I know what you mean about simulated vs real.

    Now listening back and forth Michael Jackson's Thriller track using Bluetooth from my smartphone that's an MP3 file. And then turning Bluetooth off and listening you WiFi and Amazon HD playing Thriller. The only difference is the effects from the speaker,it just seems more spacial. But it's not mind-blowingly difference and no way can it compare to 5.1 Home Cinema System. This system really shines when using it with Amazon 4k and two speakers. But as I've already got an Home Cinema System there's no need for me to go that route..But it is a really good speaker for the price.I bought it for £139 off QVC SHOPPING CHANNEL.Keep up the good work

    I put two of these in my 10x10 room and it definitely fills the room with sound, all around me. However, I feel it gets muffled when there is a lot going on in a movie, dialogue, action scenes, music etc. Some services sound better than others, specifially Netflix with Atmos sound best in my opinion but I have some movies on iTunes/MoviesAnywhere and they sounded pretty bad in comparison. I mean what do you want for a

    Well I bought the Echo Studio about two and half weeks ago and use playing music unlimited through Amazon. Seriously but although it sounds good I can hardly tell the difference between playing Michael Jackson's Thriller from Amazon HD MUSIC and mine own Michael Jackson. Album including Thriller ripped MP3 from my laptop. Then played using Bluetooth from any of my devices to the Echo Studio. And also using the 3D demonstration I'm not blown away at all.And as for hearing sounds behind me no way whatsoever..Yes the music is more Dynamic possibly and maybe more clarity and bass but it's not 4 or 5 more better than MP3 mode.The 3D is good but compared to seeing a film in a cinema visually in 3D there's a big difference.

    Great vid as always. So entertaining. On the Atmos in everything issue there’s a reason for this. Dolby atmos is a totally new way of processing audio for multiple speakers. Older surround systems had a set number of channels of audio. Usually 5 or 7 for home use. Creating the 5.1 and 7.1. Atmos is a completely different approach. The audio data for all the sounds sits within the file format with information on where that audio should be placed within your spacing surroundings. I front, sides, behind or even above. But it doesn’t specify how many channels. So it’s brilliant for 2 stereo speakers or 5 channel surround. Or 15 channel surround in cinemas. It’s all the same format. So smart speakers and sound bars can throw that sound out of whatever number of speakers they may have.
    And crappy little plastic phones can process it and push it out in whatever way they can. Usually not much better than steered but if they can push through some 3D special tech then it could do something half decent with it.
    That’s the idea anyway. So Atmos in everything Is a good thing. There’s Atmos headphones now which are petty awesome.
    Keep up the good work! Loving the vids as always

    Good review. Only thing I am going to comment on is Atmos and Dolby used to mean something. Atmos is a scalable format meaning that it can go from anything from 2 to 128 discreet channels depending on the input and / or output configuration. Unfortunately this excellent technology has allowed cynical marketers to legitimately brand a phone with Dolby Atmos. Atmos no longer means a particular audio quality like 5.1, 2.1, 7.1 used to imply.

      I have always said it was impossible, you may get a slightly wider stereo from a sound bar than your Tv, but only may. Most people have sound bards because they have better sound than what most TV sets have built in these days.
      My TV is a old plasma, so the sound is really good due to the size of the cabinet of the TV.
      when I get a new TV, I am not sure what way I will go, sound bar or 5,1.
      I would buy the speaker in this video.

    I have connected Echo Studio to my cube, but I can't hear room or 3D sound.
    I have upgraded Netflix to Premium and also subscribed to Amazon Music HD. But neither on the 3D playlist nor on movies like Dark or Lost in Space or an Atmos demo video on TH-cam I can hear spatially. The sound clearly only comes directly from the studio. I even had it reset and re-measured, but no improvement.
    Am I doing something wrong? The sound is good, but not 3D as it should be with Atmos?

    I think you're missing the point with the Echo Studio. It will function as a speaker, that is true. But, that's like saying a Swiss Army Knife will cut twine, without considering any of the other blades.
    An Echo Studio is a streaming speaker. It is the 21st Century replacement for a stereo system. I can stream radio broadcasts. I can stream both free and subscription streaming services. I can use it as a speaker for a television set, via Bluetooth, an optical cable or audio cable.) I can even use it as a speaker for my smartphone. It has remarkable bass response, a powerful amp, and it works with Alexa.
    When configured with a Fire TV Stick, you gain voice control over the Fire TV Stick, and volume and playback control over the Echo Studio with the Fire TV remote.
    The competition for this thing would be a SONOS One speaker, but the SONOS One isn't as versatile. (AirPlay2, but no Bluetooth, no audio input, and a sub-set of Alexa features.)
    Music that has been re-mastered for the Echo Studio is incredible, and you should really give that a listen.
    I have ordered a second Echo Studio, and I will be creating a stereo pair. An Echo Sub should be arriving in mid-November.

    I've heard the Studio is similar to the 3rd Gen Echo in that you can configure it so it plays a different audio source via a cable (not Bluetooth). On the Echo you can configure the output to be an input. Can you (or anybody for that matter!) tell me that if I use the 3.5mm jack on the 3rd gen Echo and configure it as an INPUT, can I get the sound to play on more Echo devices than just the one it is connected to??? I want to be able to distribute the sound from my TV (not FireTV, just analog output using the 3.5mm jack) to my Alexa devices throughout the house. If you can't do this with a new Echo, is there a gizmo device out there that allows me to take an audio signal of my OWN (not Spotify, Pandora, etc) and hear it on multiple Alexa devices??? Thanks!

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude. The socket on the echo studio is an optical input, so only suitable for taking signal from devices intending to send a digital signal, typically for surround sound.
      But, you could send a stereo signal from any device to it using one of these... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MB8VCWQ/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_64.kEbR6Y5ZFX
      And because Amazon decided to use some bizarre socket instead of the usual optical socket you'll also need a cable with both types of ends. Here
      ... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DTKWLDS/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_o7.kEbKG6FB1F
      Hope that helps!

Now that being said, if you buy this thing to replace your existing 5.1 set up AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA But if like me you just want it to sit on the kitchen side to play a bit of music whilst your cooking, then i think it's going to be ideal which is why i am going to get it. Nice video, you have earned yourself a sub.

    My speakers ARE brilliant, for my needs. That's 'cos I'm still using the classy Wharfedale Speakers I bought way back in the 80's and are hooked up to my Technics (remember them?) Amplifier, to which my T.V. is also linked. They built stuff to last back then.
    The sound is phenomenal.
    It always makes me laugh when someone tells me that a single speaker can even come close, better still when someone plays music through a mobile phone speaker and praises it when it sounds no better than the mono transistor radio my parents bought me for Xmas back in the 60s.
    That said, I've just bought a 3rd Gen Echo Dot, which sits atop one of the Wharfedales and does me fine when I'm too damned lazy to push a few buttons, which is a lot of the time, these days!
    But, I don't expect it'll be in good working order in another 40 years, but then, I won't be either! 😉😉
