Riding on the revived “Ronkonkoma Rocket” from GCT to Ronkonkoma. 3/15/23

  • This train has returned with the new schedule chang, but as a Grand Central to Ronkonkoma train, running on a similar schedule to the old Rocket. We had a high-speed ride east of Jamaica and arrive several minutes early at our destination. Enjoy the ride on the triple track east of Jamaica to Hicksville and double track beyond. Welcome back “Ronkonkoma Rocket” (portions of the trip were cut due to sun glare thru a less than ideal M7 window. A common M7 problem lately)

    Back in the 70's, I used to take a train out of Penn Station to Far Rockaway that was what I would call a super express. It left from track 17 at 5:33 PM with the first stop being Valley Steam then all stops to Far Rockaway. It got in at 6:19PM. Then, went into the yard. If I remember correctly, there were only 4 trains from Penn Station to Far Rockaway. A much different story today.

    There is a lot of construction going on around the Ronkonkoma station. Growing up it was just a row of stores across the street from the station, and I remember when that bridge over Ronkonkoma Avenue used to be a 2 lane wooden bridge!

    I used to ride that train every day in the late 90's when I worked in NYC. It was the 5:41 "super express" to Ronkonkoma with a connection to the Greenport train departing from Penn on track 19. I remember the time the train stopped in a gap outside Jamaica and the whole carriage went silent. You could hear a pin drop. This train only stopped at Hicksville, Central Islip and Ronkonkoma. Looks like the Jamaica and Brentwood stop was added and the Hicksville stop was removed. Kinda sad to see that now it originates at GCT rather than Penn. I bet its no longer a connection to Greenport. For everyone going east of Ronkonkoma, they're on their own.

    • @Jeff-uj8xi
      @Jeff-uj8xi ปีที่แล้ว

      SEPTA is a 'bus' company. That's what they really care about. Another operation that looks upon rail kindly is N. J. Transit. In the case of NJT, buses are the stepchild. But actually, I think it should all be equal. There really shouldn't be favorites. Each mode has its place. It should be a unified, coordinated system. Each mode; railroad, light rail and bus should work together.
