I'm a big carp angler. This has given me loads to think about, and there's definitely something in this that I can tweak for the much bigger carp I target. Outstanding stuff!
Absolutely, I haven't fished a match for 25 years and I've never targeted carp particularly but I watch quite a few match related videos because they can really up your catch with a few very simple tips and tricks.
It may sound obvious but watching this made me realise that dobbin' is closely linked to both zig fishing and jigger fishing. Its essentially zigging from the top down instead of the bottom up. When zig of jigger fishing, you find the right depth, you find the fish. In the video you had the advantage of knowing the depth but maybe you could take the same route as jigger fishing. Using an ultra light jigger set up work the rig up and down until you find the right depth then switch to a fixed rig set at the most productive depth. As for bait types. I assume that the fish are cruising at a depth that is 'comfortable' avoiding the colder water near the bottom in the winter months and maybe moving to shallower layers if the winter sun warms the upper layers and down again if cold winds chill the upper layers. The fish are curious and looking for suspended food items such as bugs falling from trees above the lake or larva rising from the bottom. Scent is probably important as bread gives off food signals as does citrus flavours but I think curiosity is probably the biggest factor. Fish don't have hands and mouthing things is their way of checking stuff out. Not sure about a specific colour being attractive. The most successful zig bait is usually a piece of black foam! Like lure fishing I think the silhouette is important. Black stands out when fish look upward. White and red is visible in murky water. Red maybe closely associated with maggots. On the subject of bait size. The fish, especially the larger Carp have a blind spot directly in front of them within four inches or so. That's we see a few misses on attempted takes. I noticed that on several underwater videos lately. When the fish get close to their blind zone they start trying to suck the bait in. That's why the smaller bait may work better. Less water resistance and mass. Its like choosing a wafter over a full weight boilie.
In Asia, guys fishing for tilapia use what looks like a bodied waggler with a long banded stem, for exactly the reason we see here. Having a lot of float out of the water means that you can tell a bite from a bump.
I’m only 13 mins in but it’s already really interesting. I’ve always enjoyed Steve’s content ever since the early days of ‘From the waters edge’. Great work 👍🏻
Brilliant video Steve great insight, be good to see other baits and dead maggots too, hopefully you can give us the opportunity to see more too at different times of year
Just came across this video. Fascinating how many fish and no bites. Well worked video. I tend to move mags when canal fishing if its a slow day and it improves the catch rate. So glad to know it works.
Brilliant watch. Just wondering if using a single slice of bread and not squeezed prior to hooking might be better although it wont stay on the hook as well coupled with a shorter lift and drop would be good to observe. If only we knew why they reject a bait at the last minute ! 👍
Done a great job here. As good as Jamie's vid at weston. You got it slightly better there though because you got that staging you could even try doing a shallow video there with two cameras at different depths and switch between the two. Would be a lot of work but a interesting idea all the same
That was SO interesting thank you very much. The recent ability to be able to do this under water filming is great. Would be interesting to know the real times between dropping in and a bite occurring. Amazing to see how many fish were in the swim and their willingness to take a bait in the cold weather. Also the difference with smell and colour of course, then the proof that maggots still work too 🙂Thanks again to both of you for persevering with some orrid weather
Excellent video. Appreciate it's winter and the fish slow to feed but would have been interesting to see their response to a few maggots or crushed expander dropped in from a kinder pot.
interestin i love underwater stuff. carp probably dont have good eyesight like a tench but think they got other senses like smell or taste every animal has🎣
Wow that's really opened my eyes I would never move my bread when dobbing as I'm worried my bread would come off clearly not .... adding flavours and colours I've never done as I always worry the bread would come off if wetted again changing size isn't something I would do incredible to think how much I've just learned about dobbing when I thought I had it pretty much nailed on thank you I'll look forward to another one to watch 👍
Great vid. I'm commenting in at 7:50 mins. Looks like the float is so sensitive that it's going under when to carp is "sucking" at he bait from a short distance away and as your "strike" is so quick it looks like it's not in enough. That's an advantage of being old, ones reactions are slower so I'd be hitting these bite about 1-2s after you are. Lol Great Vid again
The temptation to move..... learned so much..! Especially how the bread did not flutter and the line on the top lip.! Be interesting if popped up bread would have made a difference.... Really looking forward to more.. Thanks for dealing with weather..!
Very interesting video, one of best underwater videos I’ve seen, be good to see other similar videos using different ways of fishing, maggots / pellets on bottom, feeding just a few maggots/micros, stepping it up, feeding nuggets of ground bait, dry/sloppy, loads of different things to try. Looks like you’ve got the perfect venue too 👍
Very interesting video just shows how many fish you could have in your swim without getting a take, looking forward to the next video certainly food for thoughts .Thank Steve and Amanda.
I was surprised by the reaction to the maggot - maybe if they'd been fished at full depth they'd have a better response but then again am just guessing. Love the truly thought provoking video - thank you for sharing
Hi, I've filmed under water (watched it live) but not with air signals, you show the receiver but not the camera. from the video the camera is mounted on a stick with arial protruding from the water surface sending signal to the receiver is that right and where could I purchase such a system. Thanks
That's correct, the camera we used is below: www.anglingdirect.co.uk/carpsight-margin-cam-realtime-underwater-fishing-camera-kit?queryID=a260a6ee2f147169e8acefee5f13fdd3&objectID=102594&indexName=live_ad_uk_products
Very interesting insight, tbh I’ve always erred on the side of moving and laying in, but one of the ones for me were your shot is, I’ve always been on the side of majority of shot under the float and say 2 - 3 No11s spread down the line depending on the depth.
That is the correct way however, we had to fish the shot closer to the hookbait in this episode due to the water movement pushing the hook bait out of shot. Regards Steve
Absolutely riveting video. So interesting to watch. Even my wife, who does not fish, was fascinated by it. Thanks to both you and Amanda for that footage. Needless to say, I have given a thumbs up, subscribed and hit the bell. Barry
Fantastic video, really thought provoking. As well as doing another video with different baits, how about revisiting this approach at a different swim, say an open water peg? Fishing to a feature is great, but often not an option. Great stuff though!
Hi there. This is really interesting. I wondering if the fall of the bread is to quick to look natural. Also one of the fish went above the bait to check for a line and spooked when it felt it. Thanks for showing this, as someone said, it makes the Brain think as to a way to get more pick ups. The other worrying thing was the temptation to try somewhere else thinking there is No fish .
The fish now are very rig wise, when I fish for carp on the bottom I don't use a bolt rig set up with weight. I fish free line with a stiff rig hinge with 2" link with D rig from hook to a short length of braid the back to mono main line. The braid gives it some movement and using Albright knot to join the mono and stuff link. I use one BB shot just below the Albright knot to stiff hinge link. I've seen so many videos of anglers getting done on a bolt rig weight system. It's about doing something different from the main. Getting back to the pole, we need a shot to help register the bite, but then this effects the bait fall. I did notice on this video the fish seem more liable to take when the bait is above them, lots to think about.
I do agree with this however, due to the movement of water anything lighter was getting dragged out of shot. Filming always moves the goalposts unfortunately. Regards, Steve.
Brilliant video ,but why didn't you lay the rig in like everyone does when dobbing ,you just lowered it in everytime ,I avnt done allot of dobbing but know it works best when laid in 🤷
Thanks for the comment. Underwater filming is quite restrictive, we have a very small window to see the hookbait in, I would love to lay the rig in like normal however, it's just not possible to capture the bites underwater that way. Regards, Steve.
I was surprised at how quick the bait fell when lifting and dropping, I always imagined the bait still falling as the last shot registered but it seemed the bait was down around the same time.
Dobbing bread has been amazing for me and many anglers, this video was all about making that particular method better. We will do doing many more underwater videos, including fishing on the bottom. Regards, Steve.
Carps are as smart as dogs. They will only take a hook bait once in their life, unless they choose not to. Some carp learn to be caught and even stop fighting just to eat more bait or just take a look top side. I had a gold fish that I taught to do tricks. They even recognize them self in mirrors. You would have caught more if you had created a feeding frenzy with more bait on the bottom. When the fish start stirring up muck they can't see well and go more on smell. A small pop-up on a bolt rig works better. Most fish saw the hook and line it was obvious. So stirring up the silt is always good. Even by fighting fish right on top of the feed. Another trick is to attach the hook to a long sinking twig, with a couple of tiny rubber bands. The closest one only a centimeter from the hook and the other one 20 cm away. This way the line will become invisible to the fish and the twig becomes like a bolt rig.
Really interesting video. Congratulations to you. I would like to make constructive comments if I may. Firstly, although the assistance and enthusiasm was brilliant I believe that Amanda should not be advising you as a fish is arriving. I perfectly understand why she gets excited but she wouldn’t be there to go ooh, ooh, ohh, under normal circumstances. Secondly, as portrayed in the video, you were jumping to conclusions way too quickly. Finally I believe that you approached the experiment without putting away your impartiality You stated clearly beforehand that you think that bread is the no 1 bait, you stated clearly that you like citrus flavourings, and you also only tried red colouring. You then set out to prove that YOU were correct. I realise that you are balancing the needs to make a great entertaining video with the fact that a full impartial experiment might become 'stuffy' and potentially boring but I think you should do more great videos like this with far more MEASURABLE factors. You should have a timer running in the background to show exactly how quickly the fish are responding and you should you should concentrate on defining some factors. Natural or flavoured? Natural or coloured? If coloured them WHICH colour. If flavoured then WHICH flavour. I think this was a brilliant and groundbreaking video and that you should definitely follow this with more of the same. Just a little more ‘experimental' next time please.
Thanks for the comment, I can understand your view however, we film these episodes in a day. We have to take a very small sample size to test as much as possible within the time. Regards, Steve.
only watch the 1st 35 mins, but looks like fish from below cant see or miss the bait. the fish youve caught have been heading down in the water. if you are moving the rig up and down so could going 6 or 8 over depth....
They seem to be associating bread or shallow bait with danger. Would have been interested if you fished at full depth. Would you have got any attention.
Have you ever tasted metal?........................................................................ The fish can taste the metal in the hook, that's why they are shying away..... I think you should have been on the bottom, and have floating bread on the hook Where bait will rise, it's better done on a ledger and quiver....
Sometimes, during the colder months fish are unwilling to move and find the bait. Dobbing bread becomes super effective in this situation, putting a bait at the depth the fish are sitting can produce bites when other methods fail. Regards, Steve.
I'm an angler but don't like people throwing loads of bait in the water all the time, especially dyed stuff. We are supposed to be keen on protecting natural habitats.

I'm a big carp angler. This has given me loads to think about, and there's definitely something in this that I can tweak for the much bigger carp I target. Outstanding stuff!
Have you watched the korda and fox underwater videos??
Thanks for the comment, I'm sure all anglers could learn something from the footage. Regards, Steve.
Absolutely, I haven't fished a match for 25 years and I've never targeted carp particularly but I watch quite a few match related videos because they can really up your catch with a few very simple tips and tricks.
The camera is causing Quantum entanglement Observer effect 🤓🤯
Best underwater video yet! Just shows how the don’t like a still suspended bait, every time you moved the hook bait caused an inquisitive reaction
Thanks for the kind words, it was great to learn and pass on as much information as I could. Regards, Steve.
It may sound obvious but watching this made me realise that dobbin' is closely linked to both zig fishing and jigger fishing. Its essentially zigging from the top down instead of the bottom up. When zig of jigger fishing, you find the right depth, you find the fish.

Thanks Terry, always a pleasure to hear positive feedback. Good luck with the fishing. Regards, Steve.

Fantastic insight to understanding what is happening when dobbing, really enjoyed that, thought provoking stuff 😀 👍 👏
Glad you enjoyed the video Peter, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Regards, Steve.
Really interesting, Thanks for putting up with that weather to bring this to us all sitting in the warm watching, Look forward to the next one.
Our pleasure! 🌧️ 😊
Hugely enjoyable and enlightening .
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
interestin i love underwater stuff. carp probably dont have good eyesight like a tench but think they got other senses like smell or taste every animal has🎣
09:07 That giant Carp looked like he was dead set on coming and eating that bread and you move it and spook him! 😂
Hahah yeah, that happened a few times however, we would never normally know. Regards, Steve.
In the clear water you could often see initial interest towards the end of the session but they were spooking .
Glad you enjoyed the video, bread stays on incredibly well, don't worry about that 🥳 Regards, Steve.
Great video very informative well presented good job both of you keep up the good work definitely 7 stars
Amazing video, opened up a myriad of possibilities for dobbing with more than bread 👍
Great to hear! thanks for leaving a comment. Regards, Steve

Absolutely awesome vid. Role on the next episodes. 🎉.
Thx Steve, looking forward to the next one.h
Coming soon! 👍
Brilliant video mate learn a lot thanks guys
Glad you enjoyed the video. Regards, Steve.
Brill that Steve 👏👏
A real double eye opener 😳
Glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Steve.
Would be good if you moved your shot up so the bread flouted down more slowly. Fantastic film, more please. 😊
I was surprised by the reaction to the maggot - maybe if they'd been fished at full depth they'd have a better response but then again am just guessing.
Love the truly thought provoking video - thank you for sharing
The reaction to maggots was very interesting for sure! We will be filming more underwater episodes soon. Regards, Steve.
Thank you that was fantastic, I’ve subscribed and can’t wait for the next one
Thanks for the sub! We have more coming very soon. Regards, Steve.
Very well done the team and you Steve, very very Interesting and enjoyed it loads, Thank you

Excellent video. Really interesting to see what happens compared to what we think happens.
Glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Steve.
Absolutely brilliant video well done mate what's next can't wait.

Absolutely brilliant footage
Thank you Steven 😊
Really interesting that good to see
Fantastic Video Steve
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Very interesting, something I will definitely be trying..
Go for it! I hope you manage to catch a few fish. Regards, Steve.
Brilliant vid thanks very much much 👍

Really interesting video, lots to take from watching.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Regards, Steve.
It’s a great vid. It’s just bonkers to think that we think there’s only been a cpl of carp in the peg all match. Cheers
It did prove the amount of fish that can go past without realising. Regards, Steve.
Absolutely riveting video. So interesting to watch. Even my wife, who does not fish, was fascinated by it. Thanks to both you and Amanda for that footage. Needless to say, I have given a thumbs up, subscribed and hit the bell.
Barry
Glad you and your wife enjoyed it, and thank you for subscribing 😊
Absolutely fascinating, I would watch again maybe try a traditional rod & line, than a pole & baits with smells.
Thanks for the kind words, we will be producing more underwater footage soon. Regards, Steve.
Brilliant video.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Incredible work! 🔥 Future of fishing! 🤔
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video. Regards, Steve.
Did you put the depth markers on your top kit yourself? If so, how did you do it?
Thanks
Hi Simon, Yeah I do my own depth markers. I draw these on with permanent marker using a ruler to measure. Regards, Steve.
Fantastic vide more underwater vids please 👍👍
More to come! Make sure you subscribe to ensure you don't miss the next episode. Regards, Steve.
eye opening for sure.
I think we can all take something from the footage. Regards, Steve.
Fantastic footages mate keep this up its very interesting. Thumbs up from pete here at CAMO CARPERS UK
Thank you Peter ☺️
Fantastic video, really thought provoking. As well as doing another video with different baits, how about revisiting this approach at a different swim, say an open water peg? Fishing to a feature is great, but often not an option. Great stuff though!
Thanks for the comment, it's hard to find a fishery with clear water but certainly something I would like to try. Regards, Steve.
Maybe making the bread fall slightly slower would temp more bites, or give more opportunity for a take? Possibly not compressing the bread as much?
This is something to try for sure. Regards, Steve.
Did you use to present from the waters edge?
Why don’t you answer my question?
Hi Lee, yes and I still do 😊
Regards
Steve
Hi there. This is really interesting. I wondering if the fall of the bread is to quick to look natural. Also one of the fish went above the bait to check for a line and spooked when it felt it. it will fall too quickly using no10s lol
and double punching stops it expanding.. and you should be laying the rig in all the time and lifting and dropping with no12s not 10s
Lots to think about for sure! This does prove the swim isn't aways devoid of fish. Regards, Steve.
I do agree with this however, due to the movement of water anything lighter was getting dragged out of shot. Filming always moves the goalposts unfortunately. Regards, Steve.
Really interesting stuff.
That's Martyn, Glad you enjoyed the video. Regards, Steve.
Curious American here; do these various carp ever get harvested for food?
Nope not in the UK.....handled with great care and released here 🇬🇧
Brilliant video ,but why didn't you lay the rig in like everyone does when dobbing ,you just lowered it in everytime ,I avnt done allot of dobbing but know it works best when laid in 🤷
Thanks for the comment. Underwater filming is quite restrictive, we have a very small window to see the hookbait in, I would love to lay the rig in like normal however, it's just not possible to capture the bites underwater that way. Regards, Steve.
What camera were you using for this ?
We used the Carp Sight Margin Cam to film this episode : www.anglingdirect.co.uk/carpsight-margin-cam-realtime-underwater-fishing-camera-kit
@@AnglingDirectTV really good bit of kit that
Very interesting video 👍 a vid with white mags dobbing next to see if you have a better response
So many things to try and think about. Regards, Steve.
May I ask what venue that is
Meadow Farm fishery
Id like to see footage like this from a less heavily stocked lake
Great video your lifting was fast looking at the video I would slow it down in both directions.
Awesome video 👌🏻
Glad you liked it!
I was surprised at how quick the bait fell when lifting and dropping, I always imagined the bait still falling as the last shot registered but it seemed the bait was down around the same time.
One evaluation going forward is to try a single slice of bread rather than a double punch, this sinks slower. Regards, Steve.
To me the bait presented hanging in mid water looks totally suspicious and the carp seem to agree. GO DEEPER.
Dobbing bread has been amazing for me and many anglers, this video was all about making that particular method better. We will do doing many more underwater videos, including fishing on the bottom. Regards, Steve.
Pellet waggler underwater fishing somehow would be great…obviously when the weather picks up
That would be good, it's hard to find venues that are clear. Regards, Steve.
Shifting that pole in and out all day would drive me nuts 😅 cool footage though
🤣 it's not for everyone, but thats what makes fishing great! Regards, Steve.

That's possible, we had a very small window to film the hookbait on camera. More movement and depth changes would naturally help. Regards, Steve.
I'm really glad that you caught your 'first fish underwater', but it does leave me curious about where you were catching them before.
Hi hello lots of carp just swam past your bike and just ignored it. I think you need some smell on your bread to attract them garlic
Maybe they can't ride a bike? 😉
Should do a paste underwater video
We are trying to cover as many methods as possible, maybe in the future we can try paste. Regards, Steve.
32:03 Someone elses tag?
Interesting but it looked like the flavour had washed off so did it really help? Who knows?!
On the first drop.
Im sure some flavour does wash off however, as you can see with the colour, some does stay soaked into the bread. Regards, Steve.
They seem to be associating bread or shallow bait with danger.
Would have been interested if you fished at full depth. Would you have got any attention.
We will be doing an underwater episode fishing on the deck, stay tuned to find out the answers to that. Regards, Steve.
Have you ever tasted metal?........................................................................ The fish can taste the metal in the hook, that's why they are shying away..... I think you should have been on the bottom, and have floating bread on the hook Where bait will rise, it's better done on a ledger and quiver....
We have more underwater videos to follow, including fishing on the bottom 👍 Regard, Steve.
Carp love smell like garlic and are attracted to it more by having garlic on my boat as an attraction it works 😊
Garlic is a very good flavour I agree, I wish we could test more 😄 Regards, Steve.
Shame we didn't get to see Amanda
It's because it looks strange to them, food generally doesn't float mid water, been better on the bottom
Sometimes, during the colder months fish are unwilling to move and find the bait. Dobbing bread becomes super effective in this situation, putting a bait at the depth the fish are sitting can produce bites when other methods fail. Regards, Steve.
9:20 at that point id be switching hook bait to a live worm or maggot they clearly didnt want bread confidently they know its dangling like a trap
Bread is normally the go to bait for dobbing, that's why we carried on. Trying maggots at the end was interesting. Regards, Steve.
I'm an angler but don't like people throwing loads of bait in the water all the time, especially dyed stuff. We are supposed to be keen on protecting natural habitats.
Hi Matt, These products are tested by the bait companies before release however, flavours and additives might not be for everyone. Regards, Steve.
9 minutes in,and I'm already going to be using smaller punch size next time I'm out.
I learnt so much during this video, also via the comments. I hope you enjoy the rest of the video. Regards, Steve.
All my fish are hooked under water 😂😂
🤣
