Thank you!!!!! Simple, straight-forward help. For a non-mechanical gal, your help was perfect!

The outside surface of the impeller is not a contact surface so no point in lubricating it. Other than bubbles the most likely explanation for rattling is either worn impeller bearings - and by that I mean the hole through the impeller is worn and ovalised causing fretting on the shaft - or the small channel that allows water to the top bearings is blocked. Try clearing the channel (tiny hole in impeller chamber in video). The shaft is a contact point for the impeller so lubing the shaft would have an effect. But it’s only a temporary fix by providing a viscous buffer to damp down the vibrations from a worn impeller and reducing fretting. It’s a good tip, but you’ll need a new impeller soon.

Thanks. These are great points. I will keep them in mind. The impeller still goes strong and there is no noise. Its just 2 years old and has no cracks, so it should last a while. I had Eheim impellers last many years.

@@tropicalfishhub I used to sell Eheims from ‘89 onwards for a few years and they outlasted everything else on the market. At the time they were the only filters to have ceramic shafts and carbon bearings and an impeller lasted 10 years plus! The only things as reliable were the older generation of air-cooled Eheims!

I have had my Eheim 2213 for over 10 years and have never had to replace anything. I cleaned the impeller with just my fingers and warm water yesterday and now it won't stop chattering. I've tried taking it apart again and cleaning every bit of it and the shaft it sits in carefully. Is the impeller supposed to be sitting crooked when it first goes in? The magnet draws it to one side so I guess when putting the rest of the assembly on it corrects this? I ordered a new shaft, bushings and impeller. Will this fix the problem? Is it okay to leave it to run making all that racket? Also, I filled the filter bucket with water and stuck the top on so it overflowed into the outlet line (inlet line was full of water as well) but I forgot to do this the first time though I turned it off pretty quick realizing it wasn't primed. Would that have warped the impeller or caused any damage to the motor to cause this noise? Or maybe is it trapped air inside the motor housing? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

@@E.C.Animation Looks like different canister filters may have same sound issue. Have you fixed your problem? Mine is Penn Plax 1000 and the sound is a bit loud. Actually way louder than I expect from a normal working filter. I have spent many time try to solve it.

Thank you for this video. I have an Eheim 4+ that was rattling and
1:58 not pumping well. I thought something was broken would need to replace something. I took it apart and everything looked fine. I took your advice and lubricated the shaft and it runs runs perfect again I don't think there was any need to lubricate the outside of the magnetic motor part where it doesn't contact anything, but I cleaned it and wiped the thin film of silicone on it anyway.

I just now realised that I have not lubed the impeller. I noticed that in my filter it would always rattle after cleaning the impeller and shaft. When it's not clean, it is slightly slippery from the detritus, which I guess provides a natural lubrication, but when clean it loses that, so it starts rattling. I should get some filter vaseline soon.

  • @kralas111

Is that such a problem for Eheim to lubricate it from production? I have an expro 1500 China and the rotor and spindle were greasy. It's a shame for Eheim to save on this.

@@tropicalfishhub yeh I did here that befor but I don't think there's enough research been put into it to be honest it may be harmless but I used it once and a few days latter I had weird white stuff on my wood it was a fungus I think but it only showed up when using it I understand that people put it on propellor shafts to stop rattling noises but there's better ways for me there's a video Dr kevennovak does at shows u how to make tiny plastic washers out of a butter tub lid you can put them on them shaft to stop rattling never tryed it myself but then again my filters don't rattle last time I had issues with one of my canisters I bought a new shaft and that done the trick my oldest filters 4& a half year old it's an eheim classic 2213(250) they can last 20/40years if looked after but you will need to replace the propellor and shaft each 3/5years to keep the thing dead silent it's not that dear to replace I think I was £4 for a shaft and think it's about £8.50for the both as for the oring I think they'd out last the filter but best to always keep a spare in case of a leak I mind there was once I cleaned out the canister and put the lid back onid forgotten to put the metal clamps on to lock it and turned it on it was running perfact then I noticed I had not locked it and I was in pure shock to see that there was no water leaking from it the pressure inside is not that strong as the flow rates not high on these filters it's ment to do 440lph but by the time it gets to the tank ud normally half the flow rate due to head pressure I done a lph test on mine yesterday in fact as I was interested to see what it'll put out I got 240lph which is just over the half but that's good considering that filters is hooked up to an eheim reflex 350uvc unit so the hose at comes out top of filter twists around n down a bit bk up and throw the uvc then bk up to the tank so flow rates pobely say 54% then I tested my new fluval 207 that's packed with media biohome biogravel at slows Flow a bit as go's throw it a bit more then the eheims biomedia and there's just the Strath hose bk to tank with this filter I was shocked to see I was only geting 360lph from that it's ment to do 780 but I'd expect half which is 390lph it couidnt even manage the half about say 48% that's really disappointing I'd a thought the flow rate on the fluval wouid be higher than the eheim and considering the fluvals 3month old n the eheims 4.5years old wesame propellor bented hoses and going into a uvc unit that's a big win for the eheim over the fluval OK fluval has more flow but less n it's ment to while eheims over half personally between this two filters running on my roma 90tank they turn the tank over 7,5/8times a hour I want at least 10/12times a hour so what iv learned from this is if u want 800lph from a canister then you need to buy a 1600lph canister as by time it gets to tank its gets cut n half n this ill go for every single canister on the market apart from the ada which has a pump with a very high head pressure so you shouid get what them filters say they'll put out or close to it but over all very disappointed in the fluval 207 I really love that filter to as so easy to use work set up n clean the eheims pumps must be made a lot better or something cause who knows what it'd a put out it it was pure Strath hose Wasing going throw a uvc unit I did get 270lph an other time but still throw the uvc

@@matyodea1058 Thanks for sharing! I agree that replacing impeller and shaft is the best way to go about it. I started using this silicone when I just bought my Eheim 250 and it was already incredibly noisy with a lot of rattling although it was a brand new unit. Now its about 4 years old and dead quiet without any silicone, but with the same impeller and actually with a broken shaft. I guess some of these canisters just need time to settle down! Eheim classic is a great series though, so reliable!
