I understand your point but we didn’t see her behind us. I thanked her because she was polite and we only took like 5 secs to just show people something that was important. We’re respectful people and we are always aware of people around us. Let me explain. The person is saying that the space where you guys put your luggage is specifically designated for passengers who have reserved it. I’m not sure if you’ve booked that space, but recently, many locals have been frustrated by tourists, particularly those who don’t research in advance, randomly occupy the space without reservations, preventing paying passengers from using it. If you’re traveling with large luggage, it’s best to either book the luggage storage space on Shinkansen in advance or use one of the convenient luggage delivery services that many tourists find useful.
Just so you know for next time, the luggage space at the back of the seats is only reserved for the last row of seats so if you'd like to use that space you'll have to reserve those specific seats beforehand. Same applies for luggage compartment spaces which also needs to be reserved. If you have not made a reservation you will simply have to use the overhead space which can also accommodate pretty large suitcases. Don't fault you for making the same mistakes that tourists commonly make, but they have also been careful in placing plenty of signs around such as on the floor of the luggage area where you originally placed them but now you know!
Tokyo Station can be quite daunting, especially to a first time visitor! For the future. When taking the Tokaido Shinkansen, use Shinagawa Station, and if taking another shinkansen (such as the Tohoku Shinkansen), use Ueno Station. These are still big stations, but they aren't as chaotic as Tokyo Station.

We had the exact same issue! We put our bags there without knowing it was reserved. The attendant then moved it to between the carriages and we were fine with it. This trip round we booked the last row with the baggage space using the smartEX app.

A twin bed private spacious room for USD $80 in Kyoto is cheap and do go to the Onsen. It's never a complete trip to Japan without visiting the local Onsen. I went with my siblings and brother-in-law when we were in Kyoto. Beautiful city and Tokyo train station indeed is chaotic but luckily for us, we can read the Chinese characters and we always use landmarks to identity the areas when travelling.
Tokyo Station is the 8th busiest station in Japan. It is very huge, with 16 exits and an area equivalent to four dome stadiums. If you make a mistake at an entrance exit or a ticket gate, it will be a long way around, so please do not hesitate to ask someone 🎵 If you avoid people who walk too fast and ask someone, they will usually be kind enough to tell you. If you are not in a hurry, they will take you to your destination, and if you are short on time, they will point you to the information center😊 Don't hesitate, don't worry, you will be fine!! Incidentally, Shinjuku Station has the highest number of passengers in the world, followed by Shibuya Station and Osaka Station. The night view from the first car of the Yurikamome is fantastic✨✨ Please take advantage of it for a night stroll and sightseeing!

Note that this is the fastest Shinkansen on the Tokaido-Sanyo line running between Tokyo and Hakata. The Hayabusa, running north from Tokyo to Aomori, is faster in terms of top speed by 20kph.

There was a record of this happening in Agoda three years ago, but I was able to stay at a convenient hotel for $20, but now I avoid Kyoto. Even middle and high school students on school trips can't stay in Kyoto because it's too expensive. This year, the number of foreigners who visited Japan by December is said to be a record high of 33 million. Kyoto is definitely overtourism, so restrictions are necessary. Wouldn't foreign tourists like to see a more charming Kyoto?
This is absolutely insane. You'll see in our Kyoto video that we've been a bit intimidated by the number of tourists and being one of them people made us feel a bit uncomfortable too... Japan is covered with JR lines railway, but it is operated by separated company. For example, Tokaido Shinkansen is JR central(東海) Tohoku, Hokuriku Shinkansen and great Tokyo area are every JR east( 東日本) Sanyo Shinkansen and Kansai( Osaka,Kyoto, Nara) are JR west (西日本)lines. It is known for local that JR central and JR east is not good relation That’s why Shinkansen entrance gate is separated. 😅
It’s a bit confusing at first, but that’s normal and you’ve handled it well. To be honest, if all tourists reacted like you guys, calm and respectful, locals wouldn’t get frustrated. A little research beforehand could have prevented this issues. Please enjoy the rest of your trip in Japan, you guys are great!

We were filming this episode using DJI Osmo Pocket 3 👍🏼 However, for our future vlogs we will switch to DJI Action 5 camera because we found it better when on the go and doesn’t blur the background. It really depends what will you be using it for but both of them are just the best!!! :)

It's more the case that it was the hostel's reception so it didn't feel like entering home. But straightaway it was expected from the guests to remove the shoes before entering the shared space. It's very situational. There's no need for such comments about our cultural backgrounds.

It does come across in your videos that you try to hide your heritage. The surprise of taking your shoes off as though you're a white english bloke called Barry, reception or not, is just an example.
The hostel didn't look too bad really, although booking through airbnb you probably ended up paying a hefty premium. Just wondering, will you be manking any more travel guides in the future or even considering a website/blog with information on all your trips along with links to hotels, restuarants etc as I find that kind of thing very interesting and useful.
Our accommodation was quite good - it was just pricey because of the fact that it was busy season for Japan (Oct/Nov) + we also came during the weekend wich was the mistake haha :) We're really happy with making the travel vlogs and it really does consume a lot of time to plan and put everything together but maybe we'll also create our own website with country itineraries, travel tips and recommendations at some point!
Hi, good morning to both of you. Are you aware that Japan 🇯🇵 is going to implement a ‘gate-free’ toll entrance on all train 🚅stations to enhance better, faster and easier eccess to trains. Passengers only walk through the area without having to tap on the toll gates. I think the new system will scan passengers via GPS or QR Code, or something………for faster commute on train lines .
Not quite sure , but I watched from another TH-camr who is a westerner living and working in Japan 🇯🇵 for many years, but he indicated that this is going to be the new technology trend for Japan railways for ease of travel. The rules for oversized luggage storage behind the seats on the Shinkansen are really confusing. The English-language sign that says you are not allowed to leave luggage is hard to see, and if you do leave luggage, the sign is hidden. So I think JR should change it. This makes it difficult for people other than those who are accustomed to using the Shinkansen to understand. On the other hand, it is true that many Japanese are disgusted by the many foreigners who think they can do anything they want because they have respect and acknowledgement. Many such people do not face the fact that the standards of respect and gratitude differ from culture to culture. They insist only on the logic of themselves and those who appreciate the information, and do not care about the discomfort of those who are unwillingly caught up in it, and in fact sometimes deny the feelings of such people. Incidentally, in a narrow aisle space such as the Shinkansen, if you block the aisle for even one second for any reason other than an unavoidable cause or a sudden accident that could happen to anyone, your action is considered a nuisance in Japanese values. And a “Arigatou” to a stranger may be considered rude because it implies that you are in a higher position than the stranger. The proper words to say are “Arigatougozaimasu” or “Sumimasen".In this case, it is “Sumimasen". Well, most Japanese would think it's inevitable because they are foreigners about it. Japanese is a language in which the words you should use change depending on your relationship with the other person, but unfortunately, that is not included in most guidebooks.
just remember Japan went from completely destroyed in WW2 to being the most moden high tech country in the world in such short amount of time. its amazing what humans can achieve.
There are some things that the Japanese don't apologize for! JR East has jurisdiction over the Yamanote Line and other conventional lines in the Tokyo area, while the Tokaido Shinkansen is under the jurisdiction of JR Tokai. The reservation system is different for each company, so even a Japanese person can make a mistake, and even more so if you are a foreigner. JR East and JR Tokai have a bad relationship, so this is a problem that can't be helped.
I’d prefer to travel on Business Class (Green Car) on the Japanese bullet trains, as I’ve heard from other videos that in Japan, Business Class is higher than First Class - at my age, I value my creature comforts and I can only guess that in Business Class, you would have had a Business Class Lounge to wait for your train with an escort to your train as soon as boarding starts - either way, these trains are way better than here in the U.K. where I’ve lived 23 years, where even trains in Eastern Europe and in India and Pakistan are way better than the U.K.
We love taking different trains around the world so we would definitely be willing to try the Business Class in Japan at some point :) Thanks for the idea!
Unfortunately Japanese are becoming increasingly agitated with all the filming being done by foreigners, especially inside the Shinkansen. It’s deemed very disrespectful.
We always try to be careful with filming and would never try to include people’s faces in our vlog but it’s inevitable that some of the people most likely would appear on our video. There’s a lot of people taking pictures all the time so we feel like in today’s world filming is something that’s not really anything unusual 🤗
Even Japanese people are confused by the do not compleated announce to tourist of the large baggage space reservations on the Shinkansen, the difficulty of how to make the large baggage space reservations, and the difficulty of purchasing tickets online. Don't worry, Japanese people are also very frustrated that JR's digital platform is worst .

Rather than hauling your suitcases around with you, next time consider using Japan's incredibly convenient takuhaibin luggage forwarding services. When I was there a couple of months ago, the morning before travelling to the next accommodation I would hand over my suitcase to the staff, provide the address, they'd weigh it (≤25kg only, I learnt the hard way), I'd pay the fee (very reasonable), and sure enough I'd see it again at the next place. And of course that's if you even care about the suitcase being available immediately when you arrive; I kept all my essentials on my person. When travelling between Tokyo/Osaka and Aomori I gave it 2 days just to be safe, but I think my luggage still arrived in a single day which is incredible. It's available at any hotel, but if staying at a place without a reception I believe you can arrange for the company to pick it up, or you could do it at any major railway station or konbini.

I'm afraid I've never used their website as I always had the reception staff take care of it, but if you do a quick Google search for them their English site comes up. :)

Even from a Japanese perspective, I think the Shinkansen reservation system has flaws. It may be unavoidable that it doesn't take into account carrying large suitcases, considering that the Tokaido Shinkansen is mainly used for business purposes😢 Have a nice trip!
Unfortunately we found it super confusing and not intuitive… So next time will use Klook definitely because it’s way more foreigner-friendly :) But we believe that if people are taking this Shinkansen quite frequently for business meetings, then they probably know what to do! It has been 50 years since the current Shinkansen line in Japan started operation, and the speed is fast. The next generation linear Shinkansen line under construction, the current Shinkansen line is 300 km/h, but the linear Shinkansen line is 500 km/h between Tokyo and Nagoya, takes 40 minutes, and connects to Osaka at the end. Most of the trains run in tunnels. It is scheduled to start operation around 2028. It will be faster than the current Shinkansen line. Also, since cash payment is an old business custom in Japan, small shops often pay, so please carry cash with you.

Love your enthusiasm in exploring new countries. A hack for Japan, Airbnb is cheaper and bigger than hotels. It usually comes with washing machine & dryer. This is due to the fact there are many houses and a declining population.

We always try to compare Booking.com, Agoda, Airbnb, and Trip.com but for some reason all the places in Kyoto during that period were super expensive 😂 We knew it won’t be the cheapest place to be (since it’s super popular for the foreign tourists) but we didn’t know that a private room in a hostel would cost around $100 USD/night with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities!

For your information I did somewhat know the rules for large luggage but the official website was not making this clear at all. Hence why Klook have gone out of there way to make it very obvious as many foreigners have issues with this. This comment is very xenophobic which is sad to see.

Even middle and high school students on school trips can't stay in Kyoto because it's too expensive. This year, the number of foreigners who visited Japan by December is said to be a record high of 33 million. Kyoto is definitely overtourism, so restrictions are necessary. How was the taste of Ekiben?
A foreign tourist said that he has never encountered food that did not taste good in Japan.
We're always smiling whenever we're enjoying our time :) We really loved our Ekiben choices and the fact that they were so FRESH! And that's so true - Japanese food sets the bar so high when it comes to food standards!!!
Japan is covered with JR lines railway, but it is operated by separated company.
For example, Tokaido Shinkansen is JR central(東海)
Tohoku, Hokuriku Shinkansen and great Tokyo area are every JR east( 東日本)
Sanyo Shinkansen and Kansai( Osaka,Kyoto, Nara) are JR west (西日本)lines.
It is known for local that JR central and JR east is not good relation

We were filming this episode using DJI Osmo Pocket 3 👍🏼 However, for our future vlogs we will switch to DJI Action 5 camera because we found it better when on the go and doesn’t blur the background. It really depends what will you be using it for but both of them are just the best!!! :)

It's more the case that it was the hostel's reception so it didn't feel like entering home. But straightaway it was expected from the guests to remove the shoes before entering the shared space. It's very situational. There's no need for such comments about our cultural backgrounds.

The hostel didn't look too bad really, although booking through airbnb you probably ended up paying a hefty premium.
Just wondering, will you be manking any more travel guides in the future or even considering a website/blog with information on all your trips along with links to hotels, restuarants etc as I find that kind of thing very interesting and useful.
Our accommodation was quite good - it was just pricey because of the fact that it was busy season for Japan (Oct/Nov) + we also came during the weekend wich was the mistake haha :) We're really happy with making the travel vlogs and it really does consume a lot of time to plan and put everything together but maybe we'll also create our own website with country itineraries, travel tips and recommendations at some point!

Hi, good morning to both of you. Are you aware that Japan 🇯🇵 is going to implement a ‘gate-free’ toll entrance on all train 🚅stations to enhance better, faster and easier eccess to trains. Passengers only walk through the area without having to tap on the toll gates. I think the new system will scan passengers via GPS or QR Code, or something………for faster commute on train lines .

The rules for oversized luggage storage behind the seats on the Shinkansen are really confusing. The English-language sign that says you are not allowed to leave luggage is hard to see, and if you do leave luggage, the sign is hidden.
So I think JR should change it. This makes it difficult for people other than those who are accustomed to using the Shinkansen to understand.
On the other hand, it is true that many Japanese are disgusted by the many foreigners who think they can do anything they want because they have respect and acknowledgement.
Many such people do not face the fact that the standards of respect and gratitude differ from culture to culture.
They insist only on the logic of themselves and those who appreciate the information, and do not care about the discomfort of those who are unwillingly caught up in it, and in fact sometimes deny the feelings of such people.
Incidentally, in a narrow aisle space such as the Shinkansen, if you block the aisle for even one second for any reason other than an unavoidable cause or a sudden accident that could happen to anyone, your action is considered a nuisance in Japanese values.
And a “Arigatou” to a stranger may be considered rude because it implies that you are in a higher position than the stranger.
The proper words to say are “Arigatougozaimasu” or “Sumimasen".In this case, it is “Sumimasen".
Well, most Japanese would think it's inevitable because they are foreigners about it.
Japanese is a language in which the words you should use change depending on your relationship with the other person, but unfortunately, that is not included in most guidebooks.

There are some things that the Japanese don't apologize for!
JR East has jurisdiction over the Yamanote Line and other conventional lines in the Tokyo area, while the Tokaido Shinkansen is under the jurisdiction of JR Tokai.
The reservation system is different for each company, so even a Japanese person can make a mistake, and even more so if you are a foreigner.
JR East and JR Tokai have a bad relationship, so this is a problem that can't be helped.

I’d prefer to travel on Business Class (Green Car) on the Japanese bullet trains, as I’ve heard from other videos that in Japan, Business Class is higher than First Class - at my age, I value my creature comforts and I can only guess that in Business Class, you would have had a Business Class Lounge to wait for your train with an escort to your train as soon as boarding starts - either way, these trains are way better than here in the U.K. where I’ve lived 23 years, where even trains in Eastern Europe and in India and Pakistan are way better than the U.K.
We love taking different trains around the world so we would definitely be willing to try the Business Class in Japan at some point :) Thanks for the idea!

Unfortunately Japanese are becoming increasingly agitated with all the filming being done by foreigners, especially inside the Shinkansen. It’s deemed very disrespectful.
We always try to be careful with filming and would never try to include people’s faces in our vlog but it’s inevitable that some of the people most likely would appear on our video. There’s a lot of people taking pictures all the time so we feel like in today’s world filming is something that’s not really anything unusual 🤗
In Japan, for Japanese, we can read signs written in Japanese so it's not stressful. The crowds? That's Japan.

Kyoto is a very touristy place that’s why the price of the accommodation will be on the pricier side… But we also stayed over the weekend which wasn’t the smartest!

Rather than hauling your suitcases around with you, next time consider using Japan's incredibly convenient takuhaibin luggage forwarding services. When I was there a couple of months ago, the morning before travelling to the next accommodation I would hand over my suitcase to the staff, provide the address, they'd weigh it (≤25kg only, I learnt the hard way), I'd pay the fee (very reasonable), and sure enough I'd see it again at the next place. And of course that's if you even care about the suitcase being available immediately when you arrive; I kept all my essentials on my person. When travelling between Tokyo/Osaka and Aomori I gave it 2 days just to be safe, but I think my luggage still arrived in a single day which is incredible.
It's available at any hotel, but if staying at a place without a reception I believe you can arrange for the company to pick it up, or you could do it at any major railway station or konbini.

@@JayandKarolina The takuhaibin service everyone seemed to be using was Yamato Transport's takkyubin (aka TA-Q-BIN) but I'm sure there are others. I'm afraid I've never used their website as I always had the reception staff take care of it, but if you do a quick Google search for them their English site comes up. :)

It is dangerous to put suitcases on escalators, so please use the elevator whenever possible.
Even from a Japanese perspective, I think the Shinkansen reservation system has flaws. It may be unavoidable that it doesn't take into account carrying large suitcases, considering that the Tokaido Shinkansen is mainly used for business purposes😢

Unfortunately we found it super confusing and not intuitive… So next time will use Klook definitely because it’s way more foreigner-friendly :) But we believe that if people are taking this Shinkansen quite frequently for business meetings, then they probably know what to do!

It has been 50 years since the current Shinkansen line in Japan started operation, and the speed is fast. The next generation linear Shinkansen line under construction, the current Shinkansen line is 300 km/h, but the linear Shinkansen line is 500 km/h between Tokyo and Nagoya, takes 40 minutes, and connects to Osaka at the end. Most of the trains run in tunnels. It is scheduled to start operation around 2028. It will be faster than the current Shinkansen line. Also, since cash payment is an old business custom in Japan, small shops often pay, so please carry cash with you.
Unfortunately, due to various problems, it was announced that the opening will be around 2031-2034.

Love your enthusiasm in exploring new countries. A hack for Japan, Airbnb is cheaper and bigger than hotels. It usually comes with washing machine & dryer. This is due to the fact there are many houses and a declining population.
Thank you so much for the tip! We always try to compare Booking.com, Agoda, Airbnb, and Trip.com but for some reason all the places in Kyoto during that period were super expensive 😂 We knew it won’t be the cheapest place to be (since it’s super popular for the foreign tourists) but we didn’t know that a private room in a hostel would cost around $100 USD/night with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities!

For your information I did somewhat know the rules for large luggage but the official website was not making this clear at all. Hence why Klook have gone out of there way to make it very obvious as many foreigners have issues with this. This comment is very xenophobic which is sad to see.
To the original poster, why are you even watching this if you didn’t want to watch any more foreigners on a shinkansen ? I actually did want to watch it because I recently did this exact trip myself, it’s interesting to watch somebody else’s experience. There are many reasons why people might watch such a video.
