The trilogy represents a never ending cycle. He escapes in Jumpsuit but gets caught. Gets rescued in Nico and gets caught again in Levitate. You can tell it’s a cycle by all the yellow flowers he has hidden in his room (remember the yellow flower in his chest by the end of Jumpsuit). The city represents his insecurities, inner demons, etc. So in other words, he is constantly trying to escape his issues but in the end he goes back to the beginning and has to start from zero. The people in jackets (called Banditos) represent the people in the singer’s life that drag him out from his dark state of mind.
Saw a great theory that showed that the map of trench looks exactly like a brain where Dema would be the back and the banditos are camped in the right side (the creative side).
The black on his neck and hands are representative of his insecurities as well. He is insecure with what he makes, so Blurryface (nico, the guy in the red) would have to "drab him by the throught" and "break both his hands" for him to stop making his music and his music is a form of him rebelling and joining Josh with the Bandito's idk if this makes any sence but there it is idk how to phrase it but there is a "Dema for Dummies" three part series you could check out to help you understand
The city is DEMA which is ruled over by the bishops (guys in red). It is a symbolic representation of Tyler's mental health problems (anxiety, depression, insecurities). The basic story is Tyler trying to escape from his own demons. The banditos (guys with the yellow) represent his support group (friends and family) who are trying to help him. He gets drug back at the end of levitate signifying that no matter how hard you try it is still easy to slip back into those problems. That is the short version with a lot of details omitted. I still think it would be well worth the time to do a full album reaction to "Trench". Keep up the good work. Glad I subscribed. BTW I advocate an 8 team football playoff Michigan would have made it in my bracket. Unfortunately my Auburn Tigers sucked this year but we will be back.
The Trench Trilogy: Where it at began (it’s a LOT of information so be prepared lol) It begins with the video Heavydirtysoul, which is the prequel to this trilogy. Tyler is stuck in his own dream that loops on forever and ever until he finally wakes up. In the video, Blurryface/Nico (same person, Blurryface is his fake name) is driving the car and is trying to run over Josh but fails and I’ll get into specifics later on. After he fails, he disappears and the car gets destroyed and the whole thing just repeats itself. Episode 1: Jumpsuit In the beginning of the video Tyler says along the lines of “time to wake up”. People in the clique (that I’ve seen) have made a theory that Tyler is talking to himself in order to wake up and head to Trench. Near the end of the video the people throwing down the petals are the Banditos, the good guys in this story. It was a distraction call for Tyler to haul ass into cover and get away from Nico but unfortunately he fails and gets captured by Nico and they go back to Dema. At the end of the video it basically starts at the end of Heavydirtysoul, Tyler finds his Jumpsuit and walks along the yellow lines. Yellow is a VERY important color in this story and I’ll explain a lot in the next section Backstory on Dema: Dema is basically a city that the Bishops control. They control everything and everyone by showing the townsfolk their insecurities making them feel depressed and worthless in a way. Fun fact: the Bishops can’t see the color yellow, yellow represents hope in this story and that’s why the Banditos wear the tape, to show that there is hope and there is a way to defeat your demons Episode 2: Nico and the Niners Basically like y’all said it was a rescue mission. If you noticed in the beginning Tyler has at least 5-7 yellow flowers in a drawer basically counting how many times he has escaped and failed. At the end he leaves his Jumpsuit as a message in Dema by saying it’s possible to escape, stop trying to be controlled by the Bishops. As Tyler and the Banditos are leaving Dema they head underground to their camp which leads us to Levitate The Final Episode: Levitate It’s pretty short and simple, they get Tyler back from Dema and celebrate. At the end Tyler gets captured YET AGAIN but if you noticed the two Bandtios watching Tyler get captured, one is scared out of his mind while the other just has a stone cold face and doesn’t bother to help. When the video was released there was a theory that that Bandito is a snake, helping the Bishops so Tyler can feel like he’s living in hell. Also when Tyler is getting dragged, you can tell from his face that he isn’t even phased by the fact that he’s going back to Dema, he’s been through it a lot and doesn’t seem to care. That’s basically the whole thing explained, I’m pretty sure if I’m wrong about something someone will correct me but yea there’s A LOT of backstory for this album and it’s too much to handle but I still know what’s happening lmao
A lot of people explained everything below, I just wanna add that we can see at the end of Levitate when Tyler is being dragged, his neck is black again. So everytime he has a black neck it means he is unable to react against Blurryface, which is why I believe the whole thing with Dema and the bishops is a reference to mental illness - because for Tyler is very hard to fight the Bishops and he relies a lot on his friends, but also sometimes he seems hesitant to accept this help (in Jumpsuit and in this video when he sees Josh, he first turns around). Also: this video is so much more enjoyable when you're already a tøp fan, there are a lot of references to past videos - including the ridiculously long handshake.)
Just want to add onto what others have said.... That handshake is their actual BFF handshake, which can also be seen in the video for *Stressed Out.* Blurryface, since it was stated but not explained, is also Nico the bishop who you saw in Jumpsuit. Tyler and Josh rarely, if ever do things [musically, visually, and performances] randomly. They always have a reason for everything they do when it comes to their art/craft. In fact many of TOP's videos tend to end how they began so in Levitate, same thing but trilogy wise. It's also showcasing how dealing with your own demons [whatever those demons may be] is a daily struggle. You may be able to beat them but the fight is never truly over because each day is a new fight. Also, as much as the banditos represent Tyler's friends and family who support him, they also represent the band's fans. If you watch the behind the scenes of Jumpsuit Tyler tells those portraying the banditos that they in fact are representing who the fans are to both Josh and Tyler, not just family and friends [which some family/friends of theirs are actually in 1 or more videos]. Lastly, their latest album *Trench* is a continuation of their *Blurryface* album. Hence why the *Heavydirtysoul* music video is a prequel to the trilogy and I also highly recommend checking out the whole album. It's pretty amazing and I think you guys might really enjoy it.
Mr.Chicken explained it perfectly but I want to add that the whole thing is a metaphor. Dema is depression, the banditos are people that have escaped depression and helped Tyler escape depression and relate to him. The yellow flowers represent hope in escaping Dema. Tyler leaves the Jumpsuits behind in the city to show that there is a way out. And at the end of levitate Tyler gets drug back into Dema, showing that it is easy to get pulled back under but there is always a way back out.
Yay! I loved this! I'm so happy I found this channel. I look forward to every video, and it's really the highlight of my day. And I think you would REALLY like Heavydirtysoul, mainly because he's spittin bars throughout the whole thing 😂 Well done guys! Can't wait for the next!
Ayyyyy, yes!!! I love this song...well I love TØP in general. I recommend anything from the album Trench, Tyler Joseph's (the lead singers) bbc1 performances or live at fox theatre performances.
Not relevant ik but... Who is gay? Just the 1 or 2 of you or all 3? I am confused. Keep up the good content btw, love the vids (if you don't wanna answer that is also fine) :)
