I would consider this the perfect pedal demo Eric. Aside from having a shit ton of perfectly played licks, which you've got, the way you began and went through all of this pedals attributes and features was exactly what I want from a pedal demo. I'd guess views would only increase with every one you did. Thanks for the work and play.
Thanks so much Scott! That’s exactly what I was going for - a very honest journey into what it’s like when you incorporate a new sound onto your palette 🎨!
Dude... lol. That pedal board is connoisseur status, seeing the Dark Ekko and Deco along with just a few more essentials is a minimalist player that more than likely is all about tone and taste. Awesome.
Thanks! I'm totally a luddite/minimalist - I only wanna use whatever pedals that are absolutely necessary for the sounds I want that season. I love fuzzes and wahs too, but don't use them that much, so they live in my backstock cabinet :-)
Once I put the deco on the end of the chain it makes every sound so damn good! Smooths out any spikes and glues everything together. I’ve got a gig next weekend and I’m gonna tear a hole in the space time continuum with this setup!
Thanks Roger! I love the tone master, but I do notice it’s tricky with the top end - I can never quite get it smooth enough, I might swap out the speaker with a hemp cone.
Cool demo and great sounding pedal! Aside from the sound of the pedal, I really dig the name and Tom Waits, Twin Peaks, drinking car on the old Erie Lackawanna trains in the 1960s and 70s aesthetic. At least that's what it conjures up for me. ;-) Another really cool pedal from Greer Amps!
Thank You....outstanding review,,, Answered my questions perfectly.. Which was how compatible with my Lightspeed and various Drives it was.... And did it truly have the same characteristics as the Lightspeed by not tarnishing the pure guitar tone but enhancing it.... I most certainly am ordering this pedal now...
What an awesome pedal and demonstration! Beautiful Gretch guitar too. I have a question. Who is the manufacturer of the DC power supply feeding all of the pedals on your board? I use standard 9V pedals, and some EHX pedals that are 9V+. I also have some pedals that can be used in standard 9v or in 18v (Catalinbread). It looks like a device that works well.
Thanks Robert! I use the voodoo labs pedal power digital - it’s got plenty of clean power and all sorts of input options! Great for a tinkerer like me!
It's the duo jet Firebird - the G6131t. The pickups are the stock Filtertrons - the bridge position is great! The neck is a little dark for my tastes - I may swap it out for a TV Jones.
Yeah! My most recent vids feature the Tone Master upgraded with a Weber 12A125-H, Hemp Coned Alnico goodness! Really brought the amp to life! Now it has this smoky, greasy thing to it when in the .2watts setting. Still plenty of highs too!
I've never been a fan of Jensens, and the neo speaker that comes stock in this amp is a little bright. Once I swapped it out for a squishy squishy alnico, it's all good. I haven't noticed any weird fizziness or buzz with pedals on this amp. I suspect with the stock speaker, a big muff might not sound too great. But then again, I don't really like big muffs.
Eric Haugen Well mine got delivered this morning! Great great sounding amp. Rivals many of the tube amps I’ve tried. Although, I find that jumping the normal channel and the vibrato channel really helps tame the high frequency, especially with pedals
Hey Eric, hope you're doing great! Enjoyed the video as always! Any suggestions on an overdrive pedal for a Telecaster through a Tone Master Deluxe like yours? (Just to get a slightly driven tone with just a little bit of dirt that is otherwise transparent) Thanks and take care!!
Hey Eric, do you find you like the tone of micing your Tone Master better than using the XLR out? Just got one myself and am still dialling in my tones.
Could I ask one more question? I run a very similar setup as you. Strat > Strymon Deco > Tone Master Deluxe. I need another gain stage and am considering the Bensen preamp to stack with the Deco. Do you happen to know if they'd play well together? I love my current tone, but want some more flexibility for full band stuff.
The Deco is great after another gain pedal - it'll grab any harsh transients and smooth them out. Here it is with a Greer Southland (great pedal) in front of it for slide work: th-cam.com/video/B3WyJM26n1E/w-d-xo.html

Your thought? lots of fuzz pedals and lots of drive pedals. but you know it's hard to find one that's just right I'm not looking for heavy overdrive that's not what I want I want to kick my amp to the point where I can grab a note and I can go into control feedback if I choose to but most of the time I want that edge of break up kind of like you seem to.
hrmmm the Greer Lightspeed might be the ticket. I love that pedal. To get the controlled feedback you will have to be playing your amp quite loud though!

Another great video Eric! I could listen to you talk gear and play all day. You are the Bob Ross of guitar my friend! 😁 Just curious, is that your home studio or your living room that you record your videos in? Looks comfortable. Thx man!
Ha! Yeah - this vid definitely has a "Bob Ross gets a new paintbrush" feel to it. That's just our living room - we live in an old 1949 "stick built" house. It still has the original unpainted wood trim! We got really lucky when we found it!
That’s cool, it reminds me of where I grew up in the Southern California Mountains - our house was very similar. Great mojo for learning guitar there... Thanks for the reply and keep up the hard work Eric - your inspiring a lot of us to keep learning new stuff!
Yes! One of the heaviest things that Queen ever did! I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it - in my buddy Ashley’s garage, drinking a few beers before band practice. I was like: “What is this???? Whoa!”
Oddly enough, I've been jonesing for a Vox AC 10 lately. Maybe I should just pick up this pedal. However, I primarily play a Strat and a Tele through a Princeton, so this might not be a great fit. P.S. I dug the Wilco and Suffragette City riffs (and everything else you played)!
The Princeton is a great amp! And it doesn’t have the brightness that a deluxe reverb has, so it might be perfect! It’s a tough call, though - I love the ac4 and the ac10 as well. The advantage of the buying the pedal instead of a whole new amp is really useful for gigs and studio work - where you want as many sounds available as possible. If it’s more for home/man cave enjoyment - a new amp is always a welcome addition!
Watching this three years later in the same boat; love my man cave Fender Vibro Champ, want the odd Vox tone. This Royal Velvet seems pretty amazing, but for 2x cash I can get a brand new Vox AC10. That amp is a bit loud and doesn’t have easy attenuator support. I’m pretty content with my marshal in a box pedals, should I go the same route for Vox, or dedicate the space for another tube amp 🤔

Where is your deco in your chain?
These days I've been putting it at the end - it works really well to smooth out spikey transients and compress everything just a little bit!
What happened to your huge amps in the background? They really pulled the room together... really though, they did!
They're still here! Just in the other room for the time being - I'm always playing around with angles/composition etc.

Hrmmmm I haven't tried the Menatone so I dunno! I bet they're both pretty good!
