    You have the best taste in fuzz and groovy old riffs I've ever seen on TH-cam.
    I'm totally digging the 60's and 70's sound and my board is currently as if follows:
    Cali76 Compressor -> Tone Bender Mk1.5 (by British pedal company) -> Shin Ei FY-2 Fuzz -> Vox Wah ->Shin Ei Vibe Bro with Exp pedal -> Dawner Prince Boonar delay.
    All of this runs either into a Fender Deluxe Reverb 68' or a Hiwatt Dr103.
    The sounds I get are absolutely beautifull, both clean with the vibe on + the binson echorec type of delay. The spitty fuzz I love. Please keep making more videos like this I'll devour them gladly ! Cheers :)

    You are a great player, teacher, and it seems like all around dude. You have tremendous taste as well. Especially all that Ribot stuff. I’ve been a Tom Waits fan since I was in my 20s( that wasn’t yesterday) and talking about him with my guitar peers.... well no one ever seemed to get it. You certainly get it.

      Eric Haugen In the Mid 90s when I wouldn’t shut up about Tom Waits I had a friend tell me “I’m sure you’ll like this record”. It was Let Love In. Completely changed my life and the way I listened to music. I’m glad you brought up NC. I don’t like to say this or that is my favourite but I make an exception for Nick.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES!! That’s my favorite NC record! Perfect balance of murder and love, with great production quality ✔️✔️

    • @deanmccaskill5495
      @deanmccaskill5495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      like I said it changed my whole way of looking at music. I discovered that and New York by Lou in the same year.That was huge to me also.
      No More Shall We Part is my fave NC. I know it’s not really guitar centric but it’s just so beautiful. I’m gonna look into your website maybe for a private lesson. Hopefully see you soon and thanks for the replies!

  • @thornil2231

    I got the same board. Really good, least expansive.
    The original Dallas treble booster was more for the early Vox AC 30. Rory Gallagher was they guy who used that setup. I think Clapton never used a treble booster with the Mashall combo with John Marshall, but I might be wrong.

  • @pclindholm
    @pclindholm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The treble booster balances with the neck pickup well, I have to try that

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah! It cleans it right up!
      I gotta test that thing out with a cranked amp next to see if I can get those classic Clapton Garcia late 60s stinging lead tones.

  • @bradleybrussell1505
    @bradleybrussell1505 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice, informative work ! You very well demonstrated what took me 20+ years of pro playing to learn ( "started" in 1965 & "went pro" around 1969-70 , in an era before "effects" were commonplace)

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm jealous you got to play professionally in the 60-70s!
      I have older friends who tell me stories of those times - it really sounds like those were the days!

    • @bradleybrussell1505
      @bradleybrussell1505 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was "interesting" as changes (not just in music) came fast and hard then, but bear in mind that in those times, information about almost ANYTHING was hard to impossible to get ; no internet, wikipedia or wide avalability of any audible music of other times and places ( the former, in fact refers to 'encylopedia' ; info badly out-dated by the time published !! ..... I think many have a tendency to make their 20's "golden" whatever the actual facts ! That said, I DO have stories if you're interested ......

    • @MisterJawaman

      Yeah, I'd love to find that out.

    • @DuskyElectronics
      @DuskyElectronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      More or less, the complex source impedance of the guitar pickup (inductance, capacitance, resistance) in conjunction with complex and relatively low input impedance of the fuzz makes a tuned circuit. You should be able to use the guitar's volume knob as the tuning knob. Maybe tinfoil hat radio is at 5 on the volume knob and mexican radio is at 3. Or something like that.

    • @diddlytube

      Rangemaster, I think I remember reading back in the seventies. Must have helped with the Bassman, but one wonders: Does an AC30 / Strat combination need a whole lot more treble? Love me some Rory -- even got the stay-on-the-stage-before-the-encore audience handshake once. Before I forget: Great channel.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point!
      Maybe the treble boost works wonders for the normal channel, but yeah, I could see how strat+rangemaster+top boost channel would be too much!

    About twenty minutes ago I walked past the used gear rack on the way to the back of my LGS to pick up some mellow, flatwound strings-contrast in 3, 2, 1-and there was a ZVEX Fuzz Factory, sad and alone, on the top of the pile for a smokin' deal. In the back of my mind I heard the phrase, "EMBRACE THE CRAZY." Now I own a smokin'-deal wolly mammoth.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar

    Eric, your videos are excellent. Keep up the great work. Would love to see an explanation/demo of how and where in the chain to use the Strymon Deco when a boost and overdrive pedal is used. Thank you for all the great lessons!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks David!
      That's a good idea! I get better results when I put a boost after the deco - it's compression tends to un-boost a boost I put in front of it.

      John Kay wrote "Desperation", that is my favorite Steppenwolf song. Humple Pie did a cover of it, Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton, and Greg Ridley sang the hell out of it and that is my favorite arrangement, a lot of power and emotion in their version.. Way before my time, but I love how old music becomes new as soon as it is "discovered", TH-cam is great for that. Thanks.

    I love everything you do. I'm looking at fuzzes. I saw you had a FF on your pedalboard demo video... Is that the One? If not, and only had one fuzz, whats your choice? Based in other YT demos I lean towards DOD Carcosa or WH Swollen Pickle for price/sound. I had a Big Muff years ago but don't think I knew how to really use it. Germanium gets rave reviews but I hear it can be finnicky and not always work with all signal paths.

      I think you'd be really happy with the WH Swollen Pickle or Havalina. Both are Germanium Fuzzies, so they may have to go first in your signal chain. But honestly I've put fuzzes elsewhere and it worked fine. Really depends on how much is going on down there. I know that fuzzes don't like gain in front of them.

    Just a straight clean boost is an awesome utility..kinda goes with everything..best one I have found is mxr microamp...pretty simply opamp circuit..well loved by diy community. Eric you should get ur friend to knock one up..just boosts and adds a shimmer, or can be used to drive other pedals into extra saturation, or can be used to recover lost db's if placed at end of chain.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah those microamps are great! I used an AC Booster at the end of my chain for years, and really liked that, but once I got the Deco, I let it go.
      Dusky is really into boost circuits, he's got another pedal that's a mosfet clean boost, and a really good transparent overdrive/boost thing.

    • @adadogod
      @adadogod 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Haugen we are a 3 pc but can get kinda noisy at times. The amp is generally mic'd up at venues that require it. I may look at a Tweed Pro kit, perhaps a deluxe. Although it seems like you've got some nice headroom with your combo. Thanks for your insights!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar

      I have a tweed deluxe too and it's great! I don't take it to gigs, though - it can't quite keep up with a rock drummer.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yes I know that problem. When I set my amps, I turn the bass all the way off, and then slowly roll it back on until I can just hear it, usually at like 2-4. I do the same with the Treble and Mid - I don't like to boost things to much. I just try to get it to sound natural.

    I wish more killer amps ,like my Tone King Meteor, had transparent boosts built in with buttons or pedal to push. Why should we buy pedals for always ON pedals?...Like you say a little ropey to it. A couple or 4 different boosts like Barber LMT, or AC pedals. I use always on except for crazy solo's which most of my gigs don't give me much like the old days. Eric that DUSKY is clean and smiley. Thanks for the tHe pUSHER. I always loved that simple dramatic opening hook. keep bringing us the goods. Maybe an always on pedal inside a guitar? Pedal board real estate relief.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently Lindsey Buckingham recorded Rumors with a boost pedal build into his guitars - very cool idea!
      Also, I think Neil Young's famous black les paul has a "straight to jack" switch on it. When engaged, the pickups run straight to the output jack, bypassing all the tone and volume knobs. The effect is a similar db boost.
      Smart guys!

    • @DuskyElectronics
      @DuskyElectronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea of an active stage on the guitar. Due to the huge variety of guitars out there, there wouldn't be any one-size-fits-all solution, though, and a lot of people are wary of making their guitars dependent on a battery, which is understandable. That would probably be a better candidate for custom work than a production unit.
      I also like the straight to output jack idea. I don't think that nets you much in the way of dbs, though, just a bit more top end since there's less loading of the pickups. Or, I guess, if you play with the volume down and want to get loud quickly without fiddling with the volume knob...

    Just a word of input. You will never get the classic "treble booster" sound by running it into a sparklingly clean amp like this. Obviously you can use it any way you like, but to get the queen-esque honking fuzzy with crisp articulation, you will need to run the treble booster into some other kind of dirt.

      I love Steppenwolf! They've got a killer groove and way more great tunes than the 2 you hear on classic rock radio all the time :-)

    I'm with you on the neck pick-up. Bridge pickups on single coils are best for chicken-pickin' country tone. Otherwise, completely useless to my ear. Great on a Strat in combination with the middle pickup, though. Even with humbuckers, I almost always prefer the tonal character of the front pickup.

      Yeah! It always seems like the neck pickup, if set right, can get you all the highs or lows you need. The bridge pickup is more of a fire truck alarm - one loud, clear, powerful, but jarring sound 🤠

      To me the bridge pickup on the tele if it’s the right one is much more than chicken pickin it’s clear and powerful it’s great and doesn’t muddy up
