  • BELMONT NEVADA
Belmont was established following a silver strike in 1865. Other minerals, such as copper, lead and antimony, were also mined in addition to the silver. The boom brought settlers in and the town of Belmont grew. In 1867, Belmont became the county seat of Nye County. The town boasted four stores, two saloons, five restaurants, livery stable, post office, assay office, bank, school, telegraph office, two newspapers, and a blacksmith shop. As the price of metals fluctuated, so did the fortunes of the town.
By 1887, several of the mines closed. In 1905, the county seat of Nye County was relocated from Belmont to Tonopah. The mine dumps were reworked in the early part of the 20th century
The post office was in operation from April 1867 until May 1911 and then again from September 1915 until 1922.
During the 1870s it was known as a major mining boomtown producing silver, and was rumored to have a population of 15,000. However, the total population for the whole county did not top 9,000 people until 1980 so the rumored population total is highly unlikely. Another source puts the peak population of Belmont at 2,000 in the 1870s. Like many towns which are now ghost towns, this one lasted for only a short time.

Nice job. Informative and interesting. Provides a good insight into the way life was lived by some regular folk out west shortly after the Civil War.

Well researched and interesting. Moved away out of southern Arizona a couple decades ago. Sure do miss exploring the Southwest's old ghost towns and mining sites.

As always, a first class presentation in history and audio and video quality.
You have thrown down the gauntlet. I know that is not your prerequisite and you could not have a care.
All I know is that you have taken me to places that I have never been in my 45 years in Las Vegas.
I have been in so many wonderful mining districts, repetitively and joyously.
However, you have opened my eyes to new vistas.
You are a great historian and you love what you do.
May God continue to bless you. Thank You!

@@GhostTownWonders I remember in 1977 when my wife and I stopped at the Southern Nevada Museum on South Boulder Hwy.
I can’t remember his name, but he was always featured on the gold and silver pawn shop show.

It might be worth looking into, if you have a chance.

Thanks for providing a look at this historic, near-ghost Nevada town, it was very interesting. Don't be afraid to use that drone more: I find bird's-eye views--particularly moving ones--greatly enhance any video.

While watching his content, I usually pull up Google Maps for a broad view of the town or area. The drone footage pretty much makes that a moot thing to do.

    • @michaela.chmieloski3196
      @michaela.chmieloski3196 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@fubarfrank74 I disagree. Absolutely no comparison between Google Maps street perspective (if one even exists) and a drone's elevated view, as the latter provides a sweeping vista. Nor can Google Earth's 3D viewing be relied upon as such is lacking in effect over much of the country/planet. If drone usage were moot so many channels would not be using them in their videos' productions.

Another well put together, thoughtful and informative video, Dan. I just went back to your first video and your production has really improved. Not to say your previous videos were anything less than perfect. I live in Vegas as well and wonder how many of us would love a get together in the future to talk ghost towns, TH-cam and NV history. Have you thought of setting something like this up?

Bars for Morale, welfare as you can imagine was not high on the list . Their life styles were rough and mostly unhealthy and I am sure they did not have time for recreation. It was all about survival

Those buildings were made so large and made well. The companies had big plans and hope for the area. I’m sad it didn’t survive.
