A nice video and history. As a youth a group of us from Burbank would camp down in a mine in Johannesburg at different times of the year. Winter you either froze up outside or choked on the dust down in a warm mine. One of the largest gold nuggets in California was found in the Randsburg District in 1977 using a metal detector. 156 troy ounces. Thank you for the memories.
For many many years I just drove past on my way to Mammoth/June Lake and often wondered what these towns were all about. Thanks for the most informative video!
Very good video. Many don't realize that "Kramer Junction" was a railroad junction between Boron and the CA-58 US-395 Junction. Back in the 70's (before the solar plant) I drove the RR road bed from old Kramer to Red Mountain. Saw my first live badger. Some spikes were visible but don't remember any rails.
I lived in Randsburg for a short time in the late eighties, I moved back to Kansas where at an antique mall, found 2 1950s Red Mountain calendars that were a Cadillac dealer in Red Mountain. Never knew it was that big at that time to have a dealer. It must have not been there for long. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for all your work researching this area. As a once upon a time active dirt biker, and working with a club that ran such events in this area, this greatly enriches my appreciation of those before me. Even went to dance at the Silver Dollar and also had a cold one at a tavern in Red Mountain during a break from our hot and dusty ride.
Another interesting video. I've also only passed through Johannsesburg never stopped in town. I had believe it or not considered purchasing property there too. Interesting there was an old bus, a Twin Fageol, looks like an old US Postal vehicle parked on the property I'd thought about. Believe it or not it was that bus that sold me on the idea! Never ended up purchasing it. Though it was just an idea @ the time!
That was probably a testing lab. Maybe later used as a method lab. As a retired assayer and refiner of precious metals, I am well acquainted with the set up. Thanks for the look see. I've had some friends from my past tell me I ought to hang my sign up again in that area. Who knows!?!😊
My brother recently told me about this video and I was really excited to see it. Our grandparents lived, and passed, in Red Mountain, and are buried in Randsburg. My grandfather was a miner and my grandmother cooked for the miners. My brother lived with our grandparents for some time and I spent many summers as a kid in Red Mountain. It's been a long time since I have visited the area. I'm going to make an effort to do so in the future.
I enjoyed the video! Thanks! I've been through Kramer Junction many times, but I had no idea that these old mining towns were just a little bit north of there. I will try to check them out sometime. Interesting history. Thanks for sharing it with us!
We had an uncle that lived in Johannesburg for many years. I believe he owned or worked at the gas station at one point. We always would stop for a visit on our way for our summer camping trips in the eastern Sierras.
I wish I had a dollar for every time the buds and I drove thur Red Mt. On the way to Mammoth/June Lake. The standing joke was if you moved there the locals would give an old beat up 52 Chevy on blocks, a toilet for a flower pot and a big glass jar for brewing sun tea on the roof.
My good friend Nicholas Buffalo owned the Johannesburg station. He recently passed away, not too long ago in a motorcycle accident. He was a good miner and loved the town’s history. After his death his 2nd wife quickly remarried. Her and her new husband are letting the place go hell because of their lack of care. It’s pretty sad. 😢
Thank you for sharing. I've often driven through both without stopping. Never saw much fromthe highway to see so never gave it much thought. I'm also wondering just who it is that stops here and does the graffettie? some of it is pretty colorful, but what the heck? Why do this?
Glad you liked the video. Yes, unfortunately graffiti is a real problem at many sites I have visited over the years. Shameful and shows no regard for history or property.
When I was a little girl in the 1960s, my parents used to stop at a restaurant in Red Mountain. I can’t remember which one it was? I’m guessing the.Silver Dollar?
I used to drive through there all the time and promised to one day stop and check it out. I'd also like to climb Red Mountain, but I'm sure its off limits?
I did the same thing for many years I wanted to stop in and check it out. I must have passed by this place 2 dozen times before I finally made the effort to do some exploring. Not sure about the trail to Red Mountain. It looks to be open and accessible.
ALL the effort for a substance that does not sustain life and even may shorten life. The damage done to a fragile environment, use of deadly compounds scarers left for others to clean up, how much is that in today's dollars. thank you ,ALL good info stay safe
I grew up in the area. Hiked all over the hills worked in many of the homes. It is a nice area, but the one thing that drove me nuts watching your video was the pronunciation of Johannesburg. The (J) is not silent. me and that you kept mispronunciation the Johannesburg I could not stand to watch the rest of your video. If you make a documentary the name of the place that you’re talking about correctly please. Do you have a nice day God bless.

I hve actually stopped at the Silver Dollar bar when it was still open and had a drink or two to break up the drive to the Owens Valley.

Drove through there dozens of times. People living in falling down shacks.

I’m watching this from Johannesburg South Africa 🇿🇦 . 🤣🤣🤣🤣

As always, upsetting to see all the mindless vandalism. People who have never worked for anything don't know the value of anything.

it sustained their lives for several decades but did leave a big mess.
Any Connection to Johannesburg and Randsburg in South Africa?
Yes. I read that this area is named after the Rand District in South Africa
My question exactly bro 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whoops. I worked in South Africa for a number of years and they pronounced it the way I was saying it. Bad habit.
,👍👍
Where is Califronia?
That's where they filmed " Tremors" ain't it ? 🤪
I believe that is correct. A portion was shot nearby.
@@GhostTownWonders definitely got the vibe 👍
at first I thought you said it could have been a meth kitchen I was looking at all the graffiti and gang tags.
Good video.... the music, not so much.
