You are providing some serious knowledge and thank you for that. But let me also point out that the unfounded belief that the parliamentary system was adopted from the British is nothing but parroting the widely propagated myth. There are many examples about parliamentary democracy practiced in India. One of them is the Cholas. There are 'n' number of inscriptions readily available as to how elections are done and the eligibility of the candidates to contest for. I would say, this blind belief that anything that is supposed to be good cannot be made or practiced in India should go..
@harikumar.d.kollattu Interesting input. I didn't know that Cholas had some form parliamentary democracy. Just a curiosity.... Does anyone in the constituent assembly debates say that the Indian parliamentary democracy is inspired by the Cholas?
@@harikumar.d.kollattu While this could be true, the pros and cons of it could be discussed. But i feel adopting a system we are somewhat familiar with is better than trying to invent something out of blue for such a diverse and charged environment of INDIA 1947, and maybe thats what they did.
@@harikumar.d.kollattu 1. Even if the Cholas did have a parliamentary system, that did not inspire India's system. The inspirations of India's system are well known based on the writings of Rau, Ambedkar, Nehru and others. 2. The Chola system while interesting, was nowhere close to a modern democracy. See for example: enrouteindianhistory.com/how-was-chola-a-democracy-even-as-a-monarchy/
The setup with the new lighting looks fresh, as always the video was full of new facts about the Indian Constitution. If possible, a video on the first years of the newly Independent govt of India , the decisions taken by them and its outcomes.
Thanks for the suggestion. All the history taught in our school ends in 1947, so there is a lot of ignorance of the huge things that happened afterwards (for example the linguistic reorganization of states). -@Navin

Hats off to our leaders, they never prioritize self interests ,they really worked hard for us. Thanks to Naveen and shrikant for making this video with highlighting the challenges.
We actually had a lot of leaders who prioritized self-interest-something that is not obvious by reading history books, but can be seen if we read primary sources like newspaper reports from those times, or the raw parliamentary debates. But thankfully we had a system where others got a chance to complain and push back and as a result the system overall worked. -@Navin

One of the most educational videos I have come across recently. One question for the expert. I am basically from India but currently an US citizen . US Constitution 6th amendment gives right to Speedy Trial. Do we have similar right in India ? Also ,The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution protect the presumption of innocence. Do we have similar Guarantee in Indian Constitution ? If yes then why there are 100s of people in the Jail indefinitely without having a day in the court and also why the cases get dragged for decades.
The answer to both your questions is yes. The answer to why so many people are in jail it's because the constitution is just words on paper unless it's worked upon.
As @@J.ThalapathySriram points out, the right is guaranteed in article 21 of the constitution. Even in the US, there are lots of undertrials who are being held, some of them for many years, without a trial. This is just the gap between theory and practice, which is there everywhere, and in India it is worse because of various factors (including, but not limited to high population, low GDP, low state capacity, corruption, etc). -@Navin
All the current conspiracy spewing, whatsapp historians should watch this episode and know how complex and democratic the process of creating the India constitution was!
Thank you, Just one suggestion, I think the host don't need to act as if he does not know even basic things, But that is only my perspective, but still would liek to share it.
Indian constitution is the replica of Act if 1935 by British Raj..and it is copy of several other constitution..our country is neither unitary form of Government nor Federal form of Government. Appointment of PM who has the confidence of the house is not truly representative of the whole nation...etc😊

The speaker seems to downplay the role played by the different members of the Drafting Committee. Of the original 7, Mitter was replaced due to illhealth by NR Madhava Rau and Khaitan (he died in 48) by TTK. The others were eminent lawyers and experts in Constitutuonal law- Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer, N Gopalaswami (the capable mediator between Hari Singh and Patel sorting out the Jammu & Kashmir Accession), the brilliant Sadatullah from Assam and the confidante of Patel - K M Munshi. Of course TTK was a confidante of Nehru and liaised between Dr Ambedkar and JN. Benegal Narsing Rau was (ex officio Member) Secretary and hence was mandated to do the initial drafting but all members had contributed. It us a pity that the Nation holds Ambedkar as singularly responsible and as he did point out the drafting work done by BN Rau sone credit os also given to him. The nation owes a great deal to all the committee members (particularly the 4 South Indians and the Assamese- KM Munshi couldnt devote enough time as he was too busy tackling Hyderabad as the Agent of GoI).
We didn't downplay the role of the other members: we said that TTK did that. Here is TTK's quote: "Mr. President, Sir, I am one of those in the House who have listened to Dr. Ambedkar very carefully. I am aware of the amount of work and enthusiasm that he has brought to bear on the work of drafting this Constitution. At the same time, I do realise that that amount of attention that was necessary for the purpose of drafting a constitution so important to us at this moment has not been given to it by the Drafting Committee. The House is perhaps aware that of the seven members nominated by you, one had resigned from the House and was replaced. One died and was not replaced. One was away in America and his place was not filled up and another person was engaged in State affairs, and there was a void to that extent. One or two people were far away from Delhi and perhaps reasons of health did not permit them to attend. So it happened ultimately that the burden of drafting this constitution fell on Dr. Ambedkar and I have no doubt that we are grateful to him for having achieved this task in a manner which is undoubtedly commendable" -@Navin
