I'm always surprised by the music he chooses to play. I wonder who turned him onto this music because he is too young to know all of the music he plays. Great taste and choices in music as always. This Police song is one of my favorites for sure.
I can sense you meant well but you could also have given someone who comes up with such perceptive arrangements and virtuoso performances the benefit of the doubt and not assumed they must have had direction from an elder to know about classic songs.
As Kent Nishimura mentioned clearly in some interviews with him, he found and learned all songs he covered by himself.
Watching many songs elder fingerstyle guitarists performed on TH-cam videos, Kent has had many chances to enjoy listening to not only beautiful jazz standards they covered but great pop and rock songs they did since he released his first album "First Step" at age of 12. Through those experiences, he has been loving to taste many great songs from the 1960s through the early 1980s.
There was no direction from an elder to know about classic songs.

I love that you keep your arrangements respectful of all the parts of the original. Every melodic hook. Every rhythmic hook. This one and the Chicago ones especially. A lot of people try spicing up finger style arrangements with stuff that’s just not there. You execute exactly what is needed to still express the intended emotion of the original performances. Well done.

I forget it what arrangement it was, but I listened and studied and analyzied and came to my own private conclusion that it is Kent's micro-rhythms that make him stand out. You've heard of Adele singing micro-tonalities, I'm convinced that Kent is beyong brilliant in time. Wait, I do remember, as I write this, it was a Pink Floyd arrangement, maybe a solo to Comfortably Numb. It was that he recreated the imprecise and floating rhythm of Gilmour -- there were pauses that stretched and rhythms that accelerated, but it was also intentional and unwaivering, even in it's drift. Okay, I'm babbling now, but I'm glad you called this out and I agree 1000%
