It's such a perfect little known gem for looking so good and offers great performance. A little modding can make it a beast. I haven't driven one but I only hear good things about the handling. Being my 2nd car, it's have to be manual.

Definitely a great pre-corvette for those with a standard car budget. The exhaust is a little loud, but I feel like it adds to the driving experience of the car. Also that guys band is pretty good for rock! That is coming from a big rock music fan though. Keep up the great reviews!

Great review. I am the proud owner of a yellow Redline automatic and I love it. These cars are definitely not for everyone because of the limited space. Having said that, there is nothing quite like the roadster experience.

I've owned a 2007 Redline Midnight Blue version for 2 Months and love it. so far the trunk space hasn't been an issue for me since I don't go one trips and it fits my soft luggage and anything extra I just put in the passenger seat. I agree with the leg space, I'm 6'3 and it can get kinda cramped. it runs crazy smooth, I went 120mph (the manufacturer limit ) and it didn't feel any different from a 70Mph cruise. no shake at all
I can't imagine how you are folded into that car at 6'3"! Whow! I suppose it's fine when you are by yourself and don't take any long trips out of town that would require a suitcase.
Superb car review! That exhaust note is fun to hear throughout the review. The 2.0L turbo engine was an excellent fit for the Saturn Sky and Kappa platform-mate the Pontiac Solstice. The style of the Saturn Sky was attractive. It's unfortunate that the production of the Saturn Sky was discontinued along with the Saturn brand as was also the case with Pontiac due to GM's Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Yup, we missed out on so many cool cars. I would have loved to see the Pontiac g8 sport truck on the streets. The concept I saw at a Dallas auto show was stunning!
There are two unique-to-Sky things I like. One - when you drive with the top down going east on a sunny morning (between 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM) you get a reflection of the red-reflective Saturn logo in your rear view mirror. You feel like God is watching over you. It makes you happy. Two - another thing I like is the lights when you turn off the car. (The lights are in the rear-view-mirror.) They stay on for several minutes unless you lock the doors using the FOP. And when you FOP-lock the doors the lights dim.

yep that's the truth on the automatic with the 0-60 i the same car Red 2008 Sky Redline but with the black top. i have the GM performance tune in mine it ups the numbers to 290hp and 340 lb-ft of torque and let me tell you wow! it becomes a completely different car. i love that the tune also disables the learn down feature on the ecm the car lets you have the hp and torque gains from an exhaust or cold air intake. neither of which i have done because i worry about the longevity of the transmission being able to handle all of that power.

Like the host said, it only came in 2.0L Direct injected turbo, and 2.4 n/a. The 2.0L LNF engine is more than capable of what GMs v6s could perform… the closest powerful V6 GM was building was the 3.6 with many failures a.t.m. Heavier and less realizable for the same 300HP in stockish form, the 2.0L LNF is superior. The usual engine swap for these is a LS V8 and 2JZ which are better than any V6 GM could have decided to add.
I always liked the Kappa cars. The GMPP and Trifecta tunes offered 290+ hp from the 260 hp LNF 2L Turbo, so it surprising that GM still tunes the current LTG 2L Turbo to 272 hp & 295 lb-ft of torque if there is more on the table. Good engine in a custom chassis with smart convertible bodywork makes for a good car.
It just is a dead sexy car, I like it more than the GXP solstice in convertible trim. But, the solstice did come in that awesome little coupe form, a true unicorn. I can't remember the last time I saw one of those in the wild!
How was the handling though? I'm 5'9'' and have been seriously considering purchasing one. Is it a fun/light feeling driving experience? How are the seats?
It is a very flick able car and the seats are great. A manual transmission would be more fun, you can leave it in the gear you want to be in when doing cornering.
I'm 5'10" and have no problem with seat adjustment/position on this car. I've owned my 2008 Redline for almost 2 years now. The stock seats are very comfy in my opinion and definitely hold you in the seat around the turns. Longest trip I've driven in this car was about 12 hours so I do have to say that it can get a little uncomfortable after a while. Not to mention, the handling on this car is superb, being a roadster, as it should be.
Forget the straight line. Think corners.. The thing to consider is turbos do better with manuals because you can choose or stick with your gear at any given moment. Automatic turbos bug me to drive since they often confuse the automatic. But what ever floats your boat I guess thanks for the review.
Automatic in this car are much better than manual I drive mine daily and I am speaking from real life scenario concerning the sky redline automatic are much faster than manual look it up
question: is the saturn sky redline (or pontiac) bigger that the mazda maita? Also I do not understand why GM dropped this car, they should of moved it over to chevy or buick.
Sky is heavier but more powerful so a few seconds faster than a miata. But only a few. GM kept the engine in the Cobalt and later the Buick Lacrosse turbo but the Saturn and Pontiac names were sold off I think. Some company tried to resurrect the Sky around 2010 but that never happened, and now a Chinese company owns the rights to the Saturn brand.
if you ever come to southern California you can do a review on a supercharged 95 NSX. saw your channel as I was browsing for different redline cars since I wanted a ion redline when I was younger as well as the sky redline. now that Saturn is out I think i want to add to garage.

I think I may own the nicest one in the world. Red, Opel badging, supercharged, blue tooth, back up cameras, dual exhaust with only 8,000 miles on it. I love it but I have a C8 convertible on order so probably won’t be driving it anymore. It gets more attention than Ferrari’s and Porsche’s I have owned because it is so rare and because it’s the only one like it in the US.
This is the most fun car I have had. The torque with the tune is incredible, the power is enough to run some older vettes and mustangs Put 30,000 miles on last year driving it everywhere. Once you add pipes and air to tune there’s few sports cars that catch it
Very cool car and looks decently quick, but I would much rather have an 08 and up C6 vette with that very capable LS3. Also if you want a bargain vette get a c5z and you won't look back. But I like that this is one of the few performance cars Saturn ever made. They did have a Ion redline too for a little while. It was basically a twin to the Cobalt SS.
This was the poor man's Corvette at the time. Pretty sure matching year the Vette went for around 50k where the sky(also solstice) went for 30k MSRP. Mind you 20k difference these things were still nothing to laugh at(for the most part). But now you can strap both with ls and turbos and have all the funs. Also these little four bangers only needed a few mods to be pretty good. Other components had been tested already. You had a little money(less than 20k) you could be outperforming a few higher-end cars.
I have one in Peru - Lima and is the maximum, here all ask me what car is that? It is the version 2.4l Automatica but still super fun and has a very good look !!
Love the car, but when it came out I was disappointed in the 5 speed manual. Should have been a six speed to help with fuel economy and top speed...but it still got decent mpg though...but even the sport compacts at the time came with a six speed. I also wouldn't have minded the base engine except the weight hampered it's performance. It weighs around 3000 lbs...way too much for a 177 up roadster. Despite the gripes...it was a fun car though.
Jan, I have actually driven both. And incidentally both were automatics. The one review you just saw, the 350z review will be up soon. If it is tuning you want there is infinitely more stuff you can do to the 350z platform than you can with the Saturn. Then there is the fact that the Nissan is naturally aspirated. Less stuff to go wrong because less moving parts. Also a V6, which arguably has the better exhaust note. It has more storage space, and also beats it in the looks department. The 350z was also straight piped. Wait for the review to drop and you'll hear! You can also check the intro on my instagram, TheDutchTexan is my name on that platform as well.
Go sky redline much faster than a shitty Nissan 350 or 370 z don't get a Nissan they break all the time I had one and now I drive my sky redline so much fun

Having problems with my trunk. Whats the best way to tackle the problem? The flap behind the drivers seat will not release. Had someone make me a little tool to open manually. That's not how I roll. Like everything in my Chrome Redline to work right. .
Stock Exhaust sounds perfect I don’t know about this one because it doesn’t sound like the red line that I know I don’t know why people change the fucking exhaust
for anybody who has questions I took the time to drive this car for 6 months in all sorts of conditions due to my uncle who had leased the car and let me beat the shit out of it and I'll be the first one to tell you and I haven't driven a lot of cars it is the most fun.... It has a 50-50 weight distribution and it will drift around any Corner that you wanted to that turbo lag is the result of it cranking out 18 whopping pounds into an EcoBoost block which is in my opinion a piece of shit butt for the six months I drove this car it was a lot of fun I would never advise anybody to buy this car because repairs are just going to be a mother fucker and a door handle fell off on me actually on the passenger side butt it's a lot of fun to drive if it's not yours
Agreed! Although, when cars hit a certain horsepower figure those manuals actually start to become your enemy. I had lots of fun in a ZL1 launching it from a dig with that terrific 10 speed. Unsure if I would have the same kind of fun in a manual car. I sure as heck wouldn't have launched it like I did. (that review is slated for the end July by the way).
Well said (although the auto will usually be more consistent on the street as well). And pretty much all automatics are shift-able, but usually the automatic is best left in drive unless it has a shift function on the steering wheel or dedicated on the shifter (either a +/- gate or toggles on the shifter).
The Dutch Texan I have a suturn sl2 2001 and dude saturns are actually really good cars I had it for 10years I put 160kmilles on it and is never let me down
The Dutch Texan 👍🏻. I know the Speedster is mid engined, but the original ‘70 Opel GT was not a convertible. When the new Opel GT (Saturn Sky) was presented here in Europe it was presented as the ‘spiritual’ successor of the Speedster. Although they had nothing in common as the Speedster was a collaboration with Lotus. Anyway, I freakin love the Sky/GT!
The Dutch Texan This car was sold in Europe as an Opel. It was made on the same assembly line in Delaware. I only the only one in the US. A red one with a supercharger with 8,000 miles.

I had a sky for 3 weeks, had to return to dealership cuz the engine had no power. Couldn't even reach to 60mph. Loved the look but I guess I just got a bad one
That is completely untrue for the newer automatic transmissions that mostly have manual shift options. Even the older ones usually have a 1st and 2nd gear selector. Depending on the shifter placement you can work around it. But a manual is way more fun indeed!
yeah i'm talking about standard automatic's not sequential automatics. but i still feel that in some situations you have more control with an h pattern. Tho the advantages of a modern automatic sequential far outweigh the benefits of an h pattern on a track and in a straight line. Some advantages of an H pattern would be clutch kick and depending on the trans its easier to skip gears when down shifting.
It's a tragedy when you see a sports car or a 2 seater convertible with anything other than a traditional manual transmission.. Can care less about what's faster, it's the experience that makes makes these cars fun.. not about sitting in traffic..
I think a ULH WRX / STi has a pretty nice sound to it. And I also like the original (vintage) beetle. And VTEC honda's? Another one of those things I love hearing!
Yeah... That RX7... I really hope to review an FD in the future! But, they are in the same classification as the Supras and Skylines. They are rare. And the people that let me review their cars are rarer still! But, it doesn't stop me from wishing!
I favor the SA22C and 1st gens. Don't really see FDs around here either, didn't realize they were in the same class as Supras and skylines, not sure how I feel about that. They are the trifecta! Supra, Skyline, RX7! And all I have never driven. I'd include the NSX, but I feel that the NSX is just a bit higher tier. Those are practically supercars. I do like the classic RX7's too. Same goes for the Supra's really. I love the GEN2 supra Ptype. Such 80's styling!
+USUniversal plenty of reasons. A deal you can't refuse or the inability of driving a manual (be it preference for commuting or a physical impairment). I don't hold people accountable for a choice one way or the other. I prefer manuals as well until we are talking big power numbers.

Those corvairs are cool, but they need some help to be safe at any speed. This though, try and find a manual and you're golden!

Keep in mind trifecta is 290 at the wheels and 320tq. Stock they are around 220hp and 220 tq at the wheels. It's a huge upgrade.

Forget the straight line. Think corners.. The thing to consider is turbos do better with manuals because you can choose or stick with your gear at any given moment. Automatic turbos bug me to drive since they often confuse the automatic. But what ever floats your boat I guess thanks for the review.

Automatic in this car are much better than manual I drive mine daily and I am speaking from real life scenario concerning the sky redline automatic are much faster than manual look it up

is the saturn sky redline (or pontiac) bigger that the mazda maita? Also I do not understand why GM dropped this car, they should of moved it over to chevy or buick.
+MagnumDubstep from what I remember of driving an early 90's Miata is that this car seems a bit more heavy. But it is also way more powerful.

Sky is heavier but more powerful so a few seconds faster than a miata. But only a few.
GM kept the engine in the Cobalt and later the Buick Lacrosse turbo but the Saturn and Pontiac names were sold off I think. Some company tried to resurrect the Sky around 2010 but that never happened, and now a Chinese company owns the rights to the Saturn brand.
GM is not the smartest company on earth. And have no idea what they have. They have a history of bad decisions.

I have a 2007 sky redline, like brand new. It only has 8 thousand miles on it. Everything is original even the tires.
I’d replace the tires because safety but other than that it sounds like a complete creampuff!

I think I may own the nicest one in the world. Red, Opel badging, supercharged, blue tooth, back up cameras, dual exhaust with only 8,000 miles on it. I love it but I have a C8 convertible on order so probably won’t be driving it anymore. It gets more attention than Ferrari’s and Porsche’s I have owned because it is so rare and because it’s the only one like it in the US.

This is the most fun car I have had. The torque with the tune is incredible, the power is enough to run some older vettes and mustangs Put 30,000 miles on last year driving it everywhere. Once you add pipes and air to tune there’s few sports cars that catch it

Very cool car and looks decently quick, but I would much rather have an 08 and up C6 vette with that very capable LS3. Also if you want a bargain vette get a c5z and you won't look back. But I like that this is one of the few performance cars Saturn ever made. They did have a Ion redline too for a little while. It was basically a twin to the Cobalt SS.
This was the poor man's Corvette at the time. Pretty sure matching year the Vette went for around 50k where the sky(also solstice) went for 30k MSRP. Mind you 20k difference these things were still nothing to laugh at(for the most part). But now you can strap both with ls and turbos and have all the funs. Also these little four bangers only needed a few mods to be pretty good. Other components had been tested already. You had a little money(less than 20k) you could be outperforming a few higher-end cars.
I have one in Peru - Lima and is the maximum, here all ask me what car is that? It is the version 2.4l Automatica but still super fun and has a very good look !!

Love the car, but when it came out I was disappointed in the 5 speed manual. Should have been a six speed to help with fuel economy and top speed...but it still got decent mpg though...but even the sport compacts at the time came with a six speed. I also wouldn't have minded the base engine except the weight hampered it's performance. It weighs around 3000 lbs...way too much for a 177 up roadster. Despite the gripes...it was a fun car though.
Im struggling about my first car, i have the choice between a 1st Gen Nissan 350Z(280Hp) and a second Gen Opel GT/Saturn Sky redline. Any suggestions?
Jan, I have actually driven both. And incidentally both were automatics. The one review you just saw, the 350z review will be up soon. If it is tuning you want there is infinitely more stuff you can do to the 350z platform than you can with the Saturn. Then there is the fact that the Nissan is naturally aspirated. Less stuff to go wrong because less moving parts. Also a V6, which arguably has the better exhaust note. It has more storage space, and also beats it in the looks department. The 350z was also straight piped. Wait for the review to drop and you'll hear! You can also check the intro on my instagram, TheDutchTexan is my name on that platform as well.

for anybody who has questions I took the time to drive this car for 6 months in all sorts of conditions due to my uncle who had leased the car and let me beat the shit out of it and I'll be the first one to tell you and I haven't driven a lot of cars it is the most fun.... It has a 50-50 weight distribution and it will drift around any Corner that you wanted to that turbo lag is the result of it cranking out 18 whopping pounds into an EcoBoost block which is in my opinion a piece of shit butt for the six months I drove this car it was a lot of fun I would never advise anybody to buy this car because repairs are just going to be a mother fucker and a door handle fell off on me actually on the passenger side butt it's a lot of fun to drive if it's not yours

Agreed! Although, when cars hit a certain horsepower figure those manuals actually start to become your enemy. I had lots of fun in a ZL1 launching it from a dig with that terrific 10 speed. Unsure if I would have the same kind of fun in a manual car. I sure as heck wouldn't have launched it like I did. (that review is slated for the end July by the way).

Well said (although the auto will usually be more consistent on the street as well).
And pretty much all automatics are shift-able, but usually the automatic is best left in drive unless it has a shift function on the steering wheel or dedicated on the shifter (either a +/- gate or toggles on the shifter).

When the new Opel GT (Saturn Sky) was presented here in Europe it was presented as the ‘spiritual’ successor of the Speedster. Although they had nothing in common as the Speedster was a collaboration with Lotus. Anyway, I freakin love the Sky/GT!

I had a sky for 3 weeks, had to return to dealership cuz the engine had no power. Couldn't even reach to 60mph. Loved the look but I guess I just got a bad one

That is completely untrue for the newer automatic transmissions that mostly have manual shift options. Even the older ones usually have a 1st and 2nd gear selector. Depending on the shifter placement you can work around it. But a manual is way more fun indeed!
yeah i'm talking about standard automatic's not sequential automatics. but i still feel that in some situations you have more control with an h pattern. Tho the advantages of a modern automatic sequential far outweigh the benefits of an h pattern on a track and in a straight line. Some advantages of an H pattern would be clutch kick and depending on the trans its easier to skip gears when down shifting.
I love skipping gears. Unless it is forced by a car, that sucks.

It's a tragedy when you see a sports car or a 2 seater convertible with anything other than a traditional manual transmission.. Can care less about what's faster, it's the experience that makes makes these cars fun.. not about sitting in traffic..

It does though, the manual is more fun and I believe better for actual track use, and I'd personally never get an auto kappa, but autos are faster

Yeah... That RX7... I really hope to review an FD in the future! But, they are in the same classification as the Supras and Skylines. They are rare. And the people that let me review their cars are rarer still! But, it doesn't stop me from wishing!
I favor the SA22C and 1st gens. Don't really see FDs around here either, didn't realize they were in the same class as Supras and skylines, not sure how I feel about that.

They are the trifecta! Supra, Skyline, RX7! And all I have never driven. I'd include the NSX, but I feel that the NSX is just a bit higher tier. Those are practically supercars.
I do like the classic RX7's too. Same goes for the Supra's really. I love the GEN2 supra Ptype. Such 80's styling!
