Your points are extremely fair and absolutely understand where you're coming from, especially from netflix's reputation. As a big one piece fan I'm hoping it'll be at least a fun show. I think it'd be neat seeing One Piece from a new lens, and experience the east blue for the first time once again (albeit in a new medium)
I don’t get why people are acting as if I’m being pessimistic for no reason. 💀 Track record is more than enough of a valid reason to not have faith in this thing even if you disregard that this type of thing doesn’t work in concept.
@@ReturningSunn Cause you're being pessimistic for no reason. There hsve been great Anime Live action adaptations. Rourouni Kenshin and Lolita Battle Angel come to mind. The CGI on the Sea King also looked great and as you can see the vast majority of Fans agree. The actors also fit the roles from their looks. We have'nt really seen them act in their roles aside from the small dialogue scenes in this trailer. They also weren't bad at all because while One Piece has some great dialogue scenes a lot of random crew interactions consist of corny jokes and playground level insults (Moss head, Swirly brow).
It’s not “for no reason” There have been decent live action adaptations, but those are a small amount and pretty much all of the ones that have come out from Netflix are not the “good ones” So it’s not “for no reason” when their track record is terrible, especially since the companies involved also brought the cowboy bebop live action which was terrible because of how much it tried to emulate the source material, this doesn’t look that much different.
As for the CGI, we simply just disagree. That’s all it is. Doesn’t go any further than that. I don’t care if the community thinks differently. If it looks bad to me then I’m gonna say it looks bad.
As for the dialogue, the little bit we saw was bad. One Piece dialogue also doesn’t fit real life, so those gags and banter are not going to be similarly present unless the writers want the show to suck. From what we’ve seen it just sounds like generic, quippy Whedon-esque dialogue which has already been played out in the west too much. If that’s the route they’re gonna commit to then it’s just gonna be a pain to listen to them.
If you think it’ll be good then good for you. I already said I can see this being fun for fans, which a lot of you seemed to ignore because so many of y’all want to act like I was only shitting on the trailer and nothing else. That doesn’t mean you can suddenly act like I have no reason to not think this will be good. The history is already there, and I think it looks cheap. That’s more than enough of a reason.
@@ReturningSunn "Track record" while yes the track record of live action adaptations is not exactly great this series is definitely different in that the original author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda is heavily involved with the series having a lot of say in everything that is in it. It also helps that the people making it have a lot of love and respect for the source material (the Showrunners themselves are huge One Piece fans) - which is sadly not something that is true for a lot of other adaptations, so I think this gives a lot more reason to be optimistic.
I’m SO excited for this show, It’s beautiful!! So much heart and love put into this. I just hope it does well enough for another season. ❤

People just need to remember that this is an ADAPTATION and not a REMAKE and a lot of things will be difrent sense it's for a difrent audience not just one piece fans
one piece live action looking good so far, as long as it'll be fun and mostly accurate to the manga... it'll be a success, cuz it has to be it's own thing, not an exact copy of manga

To me it seems fine. I'm mostly excited for Mackenyu as Zoro. Imo he did a great job as Enishi in Rurouni Kenshin: The final.
I’ve only seen one Mackenyu movie in Knights of The Zodiac, and it was god awful. Hopefully a role like Zoro is better for him

@@ReturningSunn the movie was awful, Mackenyu was amazing. So there is a chance, a high probability, obviously, that he will do great as Zoro.
He, as well as everyone else in that movie was bad. I blame that more on the writing/directing since everyone there looked misdirected and kinda clueless throughout the film, but there wasn’t a single good performance in that movie lol. Even great actors like Sean Bean and Famke Janssen were very flat. Still though, I think Zoro fits him better than the role he was given there. Especially if the Rurouni Kenshin movies are as good as they’re said to be, since the roles are much more similar.
@@mitsuha4788 He is a great method actor. I checked his resume after the Zoro cast was out. He is amazing as Enishi, Arata, in The Master plan and Our 30minutes. It is a shame he accepted to play in Knight of Zodiac.
And comparing his performance of the teaser to that sh'tty movie is day and night.

Already he kills it as Zoro. Hopefully the writing is good and he gets to sometime be goofy like the manga/anime.

I said it on the trailer. It looks like the uncanny valley of tv. And the director is just straight up bad, those camera angles are something you would find in a high schooler's magnum opus that would end up in a case study for cinematic dissonance.

The way some of you guys are talking in the comments make it sound as if I said this thing was going to be terrible which just isn’t the case. I already said there were things I liked about it and that I can see people enjoying it. I never said this thing would be awful. The lowest I went with it was “mediocre” and cheap, not that it would be flat-out irredeemable
I also have not been just judging this thing as just a “Live Action Anime” I’m giving it the respect of judging it simply by how it looks as a TV show, which in my opinion, doesn’t look impressive or appealing. Just because it isn’t Dragon Ball Evolution doesn’t mean I’m gonna lower my standards for what I think a good show looks like just because it has Oda’s name attached to it.
Some comments have been constructive arguments, while some also make me question if many of you guys even watched the video before wanting to hate. In which case, why are you even watching my video if you don’t want to hear a differing opinion from your own? I sure as hell wasn’t being nearly as repulsive in this video or in my replies to these comments.
All I’ll say is don’t be surprised if this thing does end up being mediocre at best considering Netflix’s track record. It is very unlikely that this thing is going to be the “special exception” to western anime adaptations being bad just because the people involved like One Piece. It’s cool that they all seem happy and I wish the best of luck and success to the cast, regardless of my thoughts on this product. 🙆♂️

Sure this is not the BEST THING EVER. It'll never be the best thing ever simply because it's a Live Action Adaptation of a Japanese anime/manga. But to call this "bad" is just not it.

The part in the trailer where I said I'm edging my best on it being bad was seeing Nami along with the rest of the gang when they storm Arlong Park.
There's a good reason why she wasn't fighting with everyone else and on the side of the villagers. It was showing that Nami learned to trust the rest of the straw hats finally. It shows that this young girl, who couldn't trust anyone and despised pirates for what they took from her, is allowing this funny rubber man, the green haired samurai, a coward and a simp to fight the most important battle for her.
I think the casting overall is fantastic. Mihawk looks like he jumped out of the pages, but it does look awfully cheap and I see too much "grounding" in the world to be anything other than Netflix trying to create a "game of thrones fill-in" after the botched the witcher so badly.
I really hope the justify it’s existence, because so far it just looks like we will see everything again but slightly worse worse because of the loss of animation. I feel like these adaptations only exist to try to legitimize these stories for those who don’t like anime.
If thats the case then that's perfectly fine, some people just don't like anime and if this a way to introduce people who don't like anime to a story like this, then that's perfectly fine and should be welcomed, especially if it turns out good. Needless pessimism doesn't help anyone tbh

The Important thing here is raise the bar of anime live action adaptations, I don't expect a Game of Thrones or a Breaking Bad. One Piece is a special piece of art. An with the correct cast and crew will be a great show. But you can't replicate the same Luffy, or the same Zoro. Oda is not a filmmaker, but Mark Jobst, Ted Biaselli, Matt Owens, Steva Maeda, Sonya Belousova etc... are in charge of that. Oda is there just to guide the production crew through his own story.
On other live actions the main complain was: "The author wasn't involved" and now is involved and now the complain is "he's not a filmaker".
This Live Action just need to be better than cowboy bebop and fix any mistakes from other adaptations. and is in that path since 2017. Then on future seasons they will have more budget and more experience to give us an even better product. We as One Piece fans have to accept the fact that this is an adaptation. You enjoy a Black and White manga and you say this doesn't have color?
I’m not gonna argue with most of this reply, I simply just disagree with what you’re saying here. I’m not going to lower my standards for what I think is a good show just because it turns out better than something as awful as cowboy bebop and dragon ball evolution. These are professionals with a lot of money to work with. I’m going to hold them to the same standard I hold for anything else. It’s disingenuous (and honestly disrespectful) to judge someone’s work off of whether or not it’s better than some of the worst films ever made. If it’s a good show, it’s good. If it’s not, then it’s not.
And lastly, I can’t believe I have to explain this, but yes, a film adaptation of something with as much visual spectacle as One Piece should have some more color than it looks to have here. It looks way too bland, dry and mute. Nothings popping out and that’s disappointing. You can’t replicate the exaggeration and cartoonish elements of the manga/anime, so color grading and cinematography are gonna be very important here, which doesn’t look that appealing to me.
I agree with the tint to be honest. I think they should`ve made it more colourfull. It would`ve helped the cgi more. You can also use props for his arm like a bublegum sculpture arm. The main chrachters look like cosplayers because the costumes are all new. I think they can find a lot of old costumes with their budget or use some good technics to make them look old. In conclusion its seems like they are only trying to milk the ip. But it`s just my opinion.
My biggest thing is the budget I’m surprised Netflix is willing to shell out that much on a live action anime again 😭

I totally agree with you that it's endlessly frustrating that there's this idea that a show has to be live action to be accepted in the west, when the creativity of animation beats the ocean of live action trash in modern tv. If they really wanted to appeal to a more casual audience, they should have thought about that before stretching the anime out for thousands of episodes making it too daunting for anyone with a busy life to start.
@@mbyahooo1076 Dude was specifically mentioning the anime not the manga, which let's be real here, those 1000+ chapter in the manga could've easily been shorten to 500+ episodes if the anime didn't drag out many scenes with useless paddings and reaction shots.

One piece is just such a poor choice for live action because how the hell do you adapt a series with so much content. I also doubt that they will be able to handle those really high octane arcs like marineford or post time skip stuff (if this show can even get that far).
I feel like they’re just setting themselves up for failure no matter what. Most anime fans outside of OP fans are gonna avoid this just off of principals, and the show doesn’t look appealing enough to attract the general audience. It looks way too generic and desaturated to pull people in.

This is my opinion as a non one piece fan.
The voice acting is good, the set pieces are good, fighting choreography is good.
It overall looks very good and is a pleasure to watch, however the costumes are absolutely terrible in my opinion.
Zorro, Buggy and Sanji look great. The rest of the cast however looks like they're budget cosplayers.
Ruffy / Luffy especially looks like they set themselves a challenge of how to make the cheapest looking cosplay possible. And the actor for him, I don't know but... he doesn't feel like a good fit to me? Like, don't be mad at me for having this opinion - as I said I really am not a One Piece fan but the actor feels like that overly attached girlfriend meme to me at times. The way he looks at people sometimes gives me psychopath murderer vibes.

Honestly man One Piece is one of those things where when it’s live action you don’t want to think of it as a live action. Bc it’s so wacky and everything is so vibrant and weird that it just doesn’t work live action. So you have to look at it through a fantasy lense vs expecting realism from a live action movie. I just feel like people need to let it find its footing before tearing it to shreds. Because to be fair, name a single good live action anime movie. Exactly. And the thing thats worse than the live actions sucking to begin with is that people hate them so much they don’t even get a chance to go back and address the mistakes and shortcomings. Look at Dragon Ball. Has HUGE potential to be a live action banger but that movie sucked major ass. Now if they went back and tried again I have no doubt it’d be better bc they’d learn from what failed originally

There’s just no way y’all can seriously tell me I can’t criticize the PRODUCTION VALUE of a hundred million dollar TV show.
Hate the CGI, The Breaking Bad Cowboy Bebpop tint and Wigs other than that the BG is nice and the cast is fine. One Piece is the hardest to adapt basically impossible but it looks fine.

I mean, I already put in the video that its more of a writing/directing issue. The stuff he says just don’t sound like Luffy. I think his energy fits, but his lines are jarring, and the Gum Gum shout just sounded bad 💀 The trailer doesn’t do him any favors. Luffy in Live Action just doesn’t have the same vibe as cartoonish Luffy, which is the only medium he really works in. I hope Im proven wrong though.

Like its not great but most OP fans are able to enjoy the trailer because they have greatly tempered their expectations based on the extremely low success rate of live-action anime. I'm not saying you can't criticize it but it feels like you were a bit too harsh. We're not delusional, we just recognize that it could be way way way worse
I’m just being honest lol. I just don’t think this will be a good/successful show and I think it’s a disservice to animation to try and turn such expressive and charming properties into live action because people don’t respect animation or Manga enough as an art form. As I said, I really like the sets and costume designs and some of the cast, but at the end of the day this is still part of a bigger problem and I’m not going to be generous to Netflix of all companies who are known for milking classics for as much money as possible just to cancel them right after to avoid big payouts.
It could always be worse, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna compliment it for that. I’ve been way harsher to other Live Actions before. If you’re able to enjoy it, that’s good. Glad you can do that. I can’t because I hate even the concept of turning these things into something they’re not.

The reason why it looks bad for you is because youve set your standard to anime level. Yes, anime version is way better and more awesome, but why? Because its Anime. Anime is perfect because its designed that way, Anime is made to escape the reality of our imperfect world.
Now, theyve created a live action, the difference from the anime is that theyve added the "human element" and this is the reason why it isn't "perfect" or as good as the anime, because the "imperfections of reality" has been added. There are limitations to how real actors move their body and express their faces.
Now, why make such a movie knowing it will never be as good as the anime and it will just look bad and cringy? For my opinion, this is like a reality check. To show what One piece would look like when its real and exist in our world. It gives us a new perspective to the story to try and imagine again how things would really look like when added a bit of "realism" and the "human element".
For me it is great in terms of live adaptation standard, but if i judge it using my anime standard, it will never live up and would be very bad because lets face it, reality cant keep up with fantasy. Despite the imperfections of reality, it still has an edge against fantasy, because reality is real, or in this case, a bit real, cause its still only a movie, hehe.
That makes no sense. If you liked the trailer, then good for you. I’m glad you can enjoy it. But once again, this comment makes no sense at all. There isn’t such thing as an “Anime standard” the show just looks mediocre compared to other live action TV shows.
If this series naturally looks worse than everything before it because of the fact it’s using real people and places then it shouldn’t have been made to begin with. If you don’t agree, then that’s fine. Don’t make up some dumb reason as to why that is though.

Making One Piece look real in itself is a disservice to the series. There was never a need to make it live action outside of wanting money. I’m not giving them credit for “trying their best” to do something that shouldn’t have been done to begin with.

Bruh, whats important is that the story and message one piece tries to tell us is delivered, even if there are some changes to details and effects which is necessary because it is not anime, its live action, a sense of realism is added. Then again, you can change the plan as long as the goal stays the same.
It’s a disservice to the world. One of the main reasons One Piece’s world and characters are great is because they don’t look real. Adding “realism” to the story immediately takes away one of the series’ biggest selling points which is the style of it. The style of One Piece tells a lot of the story. Trying to make it look real means you don’t understand why people are endeared by it so much in the first place. It’s a cartoonishly silly series, and that silliness just doesn’t translate into real life and it shows here. If you like it because it’s “realistic” then go ahead and like it because Idc what you enjoy. Don’t tell me I have to like it or give it credit for making it look realistic when One Piece never needed Realism to begin with.
I get hate everywhere I go when I say I don't think this is going to be good. The outfits look awful, the sets look tacky and cheap, the trailer doesn't make anyone look particularly good, and even though everyone seems super hype to have been a part of making this, I just cannot see this going well. There's NEVER been a good live action anime adaptation from Netflix. I have seen good anime adaptation; the Initial D and JoJo live action films are fantastic in my opinion. I have little faith in them making this something worth watching.

@@PrettyNightmare69 Yep, I have never been more disappointed. Outfits and settings look half decent sometimes, other times they look really cheap to me. Major plot events were altered for effectively no good reason. The fact that Baroque Works is brought up in Episode 1 is already a massive change to the plot, let alone the fact that the attack on the cruise liner was entirely re-written. This isn't an adaptation, it's a remake. Luffy's stretching is about what I expected, it's half way decent I suppose. Overall, it's sold as Live Action One Piece, when in reality, it's absolutely more in line with being Netflix's One Piece. It's absolutely a 7-8/10. It's got effort put into it, but it reeks of the usual Netflix changes. I can tell that the User Score on Rotten Tomatoes was inflated by people who saw the Critic score sitting at an 84/85 and got mad salty they said it was just OK. I stand behind what I said before, it's the usual Netflix garbage. The original work was disrespected IMO when they chose to deliberately change things that did not need changing.

I also has been arguing that this show is not meant for the fans and should try it's best to appeal to the non-fans cause that's the whole point. Please don't let the fans shitty white knighting the shows and disliking your videos discourage you from enjoying One Piece. 5:30 The world of one piece is dark, nothing is colourful. Of course, the anime if goofy and makes it funny, but the reality is different. I think the live-action portrays this perfectly, whit the dark tones and the environment

I’ve finally found a similar opinion. I’m severely disappointed in what I’m seeing so far, it’s weird how a lot of big content creators for one piece think it looks amazing. Also, I believe it’s 100% possible to do one piece live action it just needs the budget, some serious passion, and direct creative control given to oda. Unfortunately Netflix is a western company and they just love to make adjustments to source content.
