What's Wrong With My RWD 400HP Subaru WRX??

  • Stick around for the little burnout at the end! Since buying this WRX a few months ago, I wanted to get it up on the lift to see all the parts it came with, change the oil, and see if I can find any major issues with it. It's definitely very beat up, but that's to be expected with it being previously a drift car. The oil also looked a bit questionable, however, the oil pressure is good, and doesn't appear to be changing, as in, dropping lower and lower. I would love to have this car be one that I keep and cruise around/rip around in during the summer. Time will tell! The more of you that watch/subscribe/support, the closer I get to being able to keep more and more cars!

This car was from Az? Never saw it nor did I know this car was for sale. I know a lot of subie dudes in Az and never saw this. So sick!

I don’t think it was ever listed for sale.

I would wager that with the STi drivetrain, it should be able to put up with some punishment. Especially considering they locked out the front and all the power is focused at the rear. The motor, on the other hand.... well, if you own an EJ, you already know the myriad of Hell that can decend upon you out of left field, lol.
Ringlands go crack. Rod bearings go knock, knock. Dependent upon the generation of EJ, headgaskets can go POP! Those are just the main 3, but it is certainly not limited to just these occurring.
With mine, it was Rod knock & a melted piston (cylinder #2) due to a nasty lean condition. That was occurring due to the idiotic prior owner that bypassed the wastegate boost reference line AFTER they had it tuned. It would surge to 24 PSI and bury the boost needle at WOT. When you surge that much air, and not enough fuel... no bueno.
Unfortunately, I didn't figure that out until it was WAY too late. Motor grenaded itself, and that was a nice $8k rebuild. Upside, it was a great excuse to install forged internals 😁. I also threw in the Killer B pickup and baffle/windage tray as it was already apart, so why not?
It has been rock solid ever since then. These GD EJ25s are a blast to drive, but damn if they aren't one of the most finicky motors I've ever had to deal with. Coming from being a Honda and then Toyota technician, the turbo flat 4 definitely came with a learning curve, lol.
On a final note, that bugeye looks phenomenal! I'm sure it has a few bings and dings, but for it being a 21 year old car, she's looking dapper! A little love, and it should be golden. In regards to the potential "shimmer" in the oil, at least on camera, didn't look too bad. Frankly, the $30 some odd dollars Blackstone Labs charges for oil analysis is more than worth it for peace of mind. Especially when dealing with EJs, IMHO.

Did you ever find out what that erratic afr and bouncing cold idle was? Mine is doing the exact same thing but I can’t find a vacuum leak!

Killer b is 8qts and that one looks way better than the killer b one lol

I thought killer b/IAG was 6qts? This one I think needed up around 7-7.5qts

@@_robertburger You are correct. Both the IAG & Killer B oil pans boast a 30% increase in oil capacity. So, if you take 30% of 4.5, which is 1.35, and add it on, yeah, just shy of 6 qts. Even the competition series by IAG states a 30% increase.

Sending an oil sample is the best way to determine engine health.
